The Backlash Against DEI

  • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs are facing a backlash, mostly from conservative commentators. This backlash came into sharp relief after Claudine Gay resigned as president of Harvard University. Some of her critics claimed it as a victory against the “DEI regime.” Audie talks to Celeste Headlee (celesteheadlee...) , a journalist and the founder of Headway DEI, about how this discourse is affecting those trying to continue their DEI work in corporations and organizations across the country.
Celeste is the author of several books, including: Speaking of Race: Why Everybody Needs to Talk About Racism-and How to Do It. (www.harpercoll...)

      It is the point.
It’s also the point that too many people being very loud and outraged about this “systemic racism” and “nepotism” have nothing to say when it’s white people doing the same thing. That’s the real problem. The outrage is inauthentic and it’s obvious. When everyone here is just as outraged and loud about systemic racism across the board then I’ll believe your concerns are legitimate.

All positions should go to the person best qualified. The way to get any demographic more involved is to train them to be the best qualified person. Hiring/promoting because of demographic category will only lead to poorer performance. This is exactly what we are seeing in modern “entertainment.” Positions in the writer’s room, director’s chair and cast are being filled by DEI hires and there has been a significant drop in the quality of entertainment (and profits for those companies). Now imagine if your surgeon was hired for DEI instead of competence? That would be stupid and dangerous. Every position should be filled by the best qualified person. Again, if you want a certain demographic to be “represented” then train them to be the best qualified. You should not hire them first and hope it works out.

To be honest, it is frustrating in the corporate world to see minority candidates getting selected to roles to which they are sometimes not effective in, simply because they tick a DEI box or two. They are not respected in those roles because it is felt that they didn't really deserve them! On the other hand, many DEI candidates in the past were undoubtedly overlooked because of who they were, causing an equal sense of frustration. It will likely take a generation of having minority candidates being promoted (because of who they are) for us to eventually see DEI colleagues in leadership roles as normal. It’s interesting suddenly so many people who have never spoken out against racism be so impassioned about something that apparently discriminates against them…y’all aren’t fooling anyone. You only care about this because people with money and power are hoping you fall for the racist trope that Black and Brown people are inherently unworthy, undeserving, and simply not smart enough to be hired for a job that “belongs” to someone else. The truth is, for hundreds of years minorities were overwhelmingly qualified for jobs they were not offered based on race. So we all know that a meritocracy is not something we have, nor is it something we have ever wanted. If it was a true meritocracy, this country would look very different. They tell minorities to work harder for the job, and then when they get it they spin lies that they didn’t earn it. Please listen to yourself. This is not 200 years ago, but this language you’re spewing sounds eerily similar.

I think she was guilty of repeated plagiarism, but that the plagiarism was not of the type of stealing ideas or claiming credit for others work, but just being a sloppy scholar. I feel that academics in DEI related fields probably often get away with sloppy scholarship if they are good activists because those fields lean 99% left and there is just no conservative pushback. I feel she got the Harvard Presidency because of DEI with their being a couple dimensions to that--one to show Harvard is committed to DEI and two and more discreetly (and Harvard's board would deny it) I think she was supposed to be able to keep the DEI people at Harvard more in line given she was recognized as a DEI leader.
I hate DEI because I feel that it is oversimplified to the point of being misleading. I think privilege certainly exists, but when you only focus on certain types of privileges and not others, it misleads people. DEI focuses on identity based privilege. It does not focus on class privilege or more individual context related privilege like privilege of having good parents (or even having one just good parent can a long ways), it does not focus on geographic privilege (growing up in area with economic opportunities and in neighborhoods with good role models). DEI is so incomplete as to be misleading in my opinion. Does white privilege exist? Yes. Is Donald Trump an example of white privilege? Not really--he is an example of class privilege and he personally has benefitted from playing on racial resentments but its a terrible example of white privilege because his privilege reflects the experiences of maybe 1 in 10 million white people. Thus despite him being used as an example all the time, I think he is a terrible example. What is an example of white privilege in my opinion? The experiment of sending out resumes with traditional vs. lower income black community names is an example of probably what I would consider white privilege as your typical white person like myself gains a benefit.
Why is DEI so oversimplified. I think its because the Democratic party has become the party of the privileged economic elite....the professional class, the lawyers, accountants, the media. They are privileged class wise and opportunity wise such as access to education. Often they had other privileges like growing up in good neighborhoods and in good families. And by focusing only on certain types of privileges, they can protect the most important privileges they have.

For what its worth, I think of woke as a way of thinking---and I think of DEI as being applying to way of thinking to existing institutions.
I also feel like DEI is becoming an institutionalized thing. There are a lot of people whose career depends on it at this point and therefore are going to be resistant to DEI alternatives.

I don't see anything wrong with using the term grandfathered clause. Yes the term has a racist origin, but now its used generally to mean people exempted from legislation because they were probably already doing the prohibited action at the time legislation was passed and the legislature doesn't want to create a firestorm by making the new law apply to them. I know of no other term that describes that. So I will continue to use grandfather clause. When conservatives say we should only apply the language of the Constitution as the framers would have found it (or the people who passed the amendment would have understood that language in the case of amendments) is that a good argument. Does language depend on context and should how we intrepret things like constitutional provisions change over time. Probably most people have no awareness of the origins of grandfather clause--I feel like that trying to ban the modern day use of it, which is not racial in nature is like a pretty good example of how DEI focuses on nothing issues rather than actually addressing real privilege.
Going back to my earlier point about an industry of people depending on DEI for their jobs. DEI kind of has to focus on mostly non-issues. If it focused on privilege like class and the different benefits say management got from workers of course businesses would pay for DEI consultants and educational institutions that have their own hierarchies with lots of untenured teachers at the bottom along with custodial and food service workers at the bottom would not pay for these DEI consultants and staff. In that sense I think DEI is fundamentally flawed. Like there probably are racial issues in lots of corporations but the racial issues tie into other areas of privileges that would truly be uncomfortable for elites in a way that just focusing on race and non-issues like the term "grandfathered" are not really threatening. Because the DEI industry is dependent on dominant interests money, its fundamentally flawed if you think it would challenge the existing hierarchy in meaningful ways. I think in some ways, the woman being interviewed probably understands that but she has to act like the work she is doing is really meaningful so she can continue to get paid.

The virtue bubble has not only peaked; it is starting to deflate. For the last few years, the ESG movement has affected both how people invest and what they buy. Now the acronym (it stands for environmental, social and governance) is becoming a "dirty word." Companies are scrubbing it from their websites, and CEOs are no longer mentioning it in their speeches. And if there is an acronym that that sparks even stronger feelings than ESG, it is DEI (which stands for diversity, equity and inclusion, and is part of the S and G in ESG). Depending on your view, DEl is either a cure for America's structural racism or proof that the fight against it has gone too far. In either case, its power
is also fading; firms facing narrowing profit margins are cutting jobs in DEl departments.

When are they going to incorporate DEI into the NBA and NFL for example. They are so focused on hiring the best for the job and it has become the opposite of diverse. I don’t know of any Hispanics in the NBA or Asians in the NFL. Doesn’t give a fair perspective. I believe it possibly has to do with Black men possibly having better physical genetics or abilities. But DEI has taught me they shouldn’t base it solely on one’s ability to do the job better than anyone else. It doesn’t leave the leagues diverse and definitely not equity of outcome. It’s almost like those sports were designed to discriminate against non-black people.
I would love someone to use any logic they use o explain DEi in the workplace and still be able to tell me I’m wrong with that.
