  • The deuteragonist of the main story of Chainsaw Man, Aki Hayakawa is a man who makes a slow decent through the hellish journey of Denji. Acting as lancer of the group will his skills really be up to bat when facing seemingly insurmountable odds or will he strike out at worst possible moment?

    Aki was someone who's desire for revenge didn't even let enjoy Himeno's love and when he finally gained a family in the form of Denji and Power and was starting to soften and forget about revenge, Makima turned him into the Gun Devil and had to be stopped/killed by Denji, his best friend/brother in arms. Aki is a brillant, tragic character

    Power's physical death by Makima also nearly brought me to tears-- it's not just that she's holding Denji's birthday cake, or it being a reminder from earlier that he had never tried cake but tried imitating it as a kid with flour, water and sugar mixed together and shared the sludge with Pochita. What got me is it's clearly a cake from a cake shop and it has personalized text. She finally had become human to the point where she could interact with others and buy a personalized cake on her own and she didn't mess it up either ): Aki and Power both really grew

    I remember how badly makima's reveal fucked me up. It was one of the most flawlessly executed twist villains in history. We suspect that she's not what she seems but we aren't given too much evidence about if she's truly human or not. And the way she just casually drops it in conversation with Aki, it was a amazing choice to not go the route of a direct reveal with her saying "I am a devil" but her answering Aki's question with her own question, if he would make a deal with her. We see that panel of Aki freeze up in realization and he knows that he was being manipulated from the very start before ultimately succumbing to her influence. And becomes the very thing he hated the most and swore to destroy

    • @IchigoShinagami
      @IchigoShinagami 2 года назад +93

      I still kinda feel that the whole "The Devil is stronger the more their name is feared" didn't work, I think people are WAAAAY less scared of being controlled than for example Violence (since many powerful Devils, like The Gun Devil arguably get their power from a fear of Violence).

    • @shizachan8421
      @shizachan8421 2 года назад +322

      @@IchigoShinagami I'm not sure. After all, control is a multi-faceted concept. If we look at contemporary politics, especially radical conservative movements, lots of it is determined by by an obsession with control, the fear of control and the fear of being oppressed, therefore controlled by others. Like, many anti-immigration or generally xenophobic movements are mostly driven by a fear of becoming a minority and the association with that status as being oppressed and being controlled by others in malicious intent. We also see the fear of control currently with the anti-covid movements all across the world. Though at the same time, many people have actually a kind of schizophrenic relationship with the idea of control and being controlled, with the fear of being controlled by some malicious foreign influence often correlated with the desire of being in control or having a benevolent in-group figure exercizing control, by somebody who promises a forceful return to an imagined better times and the removal of undesirable elements which represent perceived manovolent ideas of control. Which Makima ironically, represents both. She is both the fear of humanity being secretly controlled by a devil, a malicious other, as well as the desire of being under the control of a benevolent and desirable figure, her being a charismatic, attractive and seemingly nuturing woman, who takes away the free will of others, representing the ultimate fear surrounding the idea of being controlled and losing freedom as well as wishing for to remove undesirable concepts to human life, representing a benevolent idea of a controlling paternal leader.
      Plus, Makima also seems to have special properties to herself, which may come from her status as a member of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, that being that seemingly her powers not only being determined by how others perceive her, but also by how she herself perceives herself in relation to others, her being the strongest as long as she perceives herself as superior to others. Plus, much of Makimas power is gained not through her inherit power, but by her intelligence to make contracts that benefit her. So I think Makima being one of the most powerful devils as the control levels makes the most sense, especially since it was established with beings like the Darkness devil, that more primordial and abstract concepts which are feared by the human sub-conscious tend to be the strongest class of devils.
      And finally, we don't really know the violence devils true powerlevel. After all, we only met him as a fiend, therefore he already lost much of his original powers and to add to that, he also was an atypical fiend whose human brain had remained mostly intact, so that he inherited a kind and peace-loving personality from his human host which contradicts his nature, as Violence Devil which I'd imagine weakens him further. I would also imagine that Nayuta too, if Denji manages to raise her in a way in which she appreciates non-hierarchical, equal relationships with others, probably would lose much of her inherit powers as control devil, due to such an outlook at others being antithetical to her powers.

Sometimes it’s to the point of going full circle.
      In chainsawman, to the eyes of the people, the safety division is probably like a police or heroes. And probably using the gun devil as a tool for her plan too. By that facade makima is a good guy to the eyes of the people. She even use that to her advantage by making chainsawman a hero so he weakens.

    Aki and Kurapika are honestly the best portrayals of revenge driven characters falling as they go through their journey, and I honestly hope the author of HxH continues to go through with Kurapika's fall and/or rise without shoehorning a "happy" ending for him considering he's basically been doing all the same things as Aki. Sacrificing his life-time for power, restricting how he lives his life for revenge, keeping his issues and friends separate as much as possible. I'd hoped to see Guts reach that point as well but sadly we never got another run in with griffith before the end. Although his influence, history, and anger were all justified and had their own unique feeling as he slowly grew to trust his group throughout the series.

    Aki's hair knot reminds me of a chonmage or a samurai knot in the fact that he is chivalrous as a samurai in his duty to deliver justice and protect the weak. When he loses it after becoming the Gun fiend is a sign of dishonor and he's no longer himself.
    Another weird and NSFW symbology of the Future devil is that it looks like a tree or a woman's birth canal; both directly symbolizing a being of the future whether it's a child or a growing tree, a passing of time.

So I had a gut feeling that she was going to do something horrible, and my gut feeling was right.

    aki's revenge arc is probably the only "revenge" in anime that i actually like, nothing generic, no turning a new leaf like a 800mm thick plot armor that defies everything, he dies, and dies for good, there's no turning back from the shit you've done in your frequent seek for revenge, and if he did get that revenge and lived, what would he do after? 2 years isn't a whole lot, and knowing you know when you will die and how, its rather morbid.

    • @pian-0g445
      @pian-0g445 Год назад +10

      I think a bit differently. He did turn over a new leaf due to the new people forced into his life and his prior experiences with loses, old and recent events.
      Yet, with that short time, he chose to try and protect the way of life Denji and Makima now had. It’s because of this, his death hurts more as we realise he was never in control and his last moments were him under an influence that would lead to the torment of Denji.
      It’s that despite his efforts to finally help those around him in a more human way, not only does he lose it, but his very existence became a danger to Denji’s mind.

    This seems to be incredibly thought out from start to finish, yet it progresses on an organic way, when death comes, it means something.
    And the antagonists are such dispicable and disgusting creatures, but you are still enamored by how they use their abilities and how they bend people to their will.
    None more than the main antagonis.
    You just love to hate her.
    Gotta admit, I respect these kinds of stories.

    Few anime do tragedy with the mastery of Chainsaw Man. The most painful thing is if Makima hadn't mind-controlled Aki to love her, even with his burning obsession with revenge, I do believe he would have found that love he desperately needed and deserved in Himeno. Makima gave him a new family. A deep friendship in Angel, and ripped it all away, making him become the thing he hated most in the world. Makima has ripped everything away from each of them. There's not a character I've ever hated and feared more than Makima.

There’s nothing I want more than for him to be able to come back in a similar way to what they imply could happen to bring back power, but I also do think that the tragedy of his character is stronger if he is left dead. It’s just really sad but beautiful as well in the storytelling of breaking down denji while also showing Aki’s inspiration to kill the gun devil bringing him back to his game of catch in the end.

    I think that part of the reason that Aki doesn’t show any reciprocated love towards Himeno is because of Makima. When his is about to talk to makima on the beach he says to Angel that he needs his job because of denji, power, and makima. Angel asks Aki how he fell for Makima, and he doesn’t know. Likely because she used her powers to manipulate him into liking her and not Himeno, like the hybrid squad at the end of part 1 where every character pledges their love to makima even Quanzi, who watched makima kill her women.

    In your gun devil video you bring up that in the list of names Aki Hayakawa shows up…
    We keep saying that if he could have went to the civilian sector and dropped his revenge he would have been safe and lived with Himeno. I believe they wrote his name there to show that no matter what Aki would’ve chosen. He would’ve been shot and killed that day. When we hear the parameters, adult males, and children. That means even if he got out early on, Himeno would have had to see him die if she was born in those three months.
    His fate was always tied to the gun devil.

    I wonder how strong Aki could've been if he never lost Kon..

      The fox was a basic devil that liked to hand out contracts to aspiring devil hunters- strong enough to deal with weaker devils and such, but compared to stuff like the gun or control devil? Not a chance.

    I think that a Part of Aki’s Design and Character is Based on Samurais. His Main Weapon is a Sword,His Topknot Is called a Chon-mage which was a common Hair style for Men in Feudal Japan
    Which was also used Commonly by Samurai.His Revenge-fetish can be a Reference for the Honor element of the Samurai,
    And his Samurai elements are a contrast to Gun Devil

    At first I thought Makima was just one of those characters that look evil but really aren't Until I saw what she did Aki and Denji bro I immediately hated her which is good cuz that means her writing was beautiful

    Aki loved Himeno but was brainwashed by Makima, you can't change my mind

    I'm still a bit confused about something regarding Aki. When Makima seemingly dominated the Gun Devil she did something to Aki to make him possess the Gun Devil's abilities but what exactly happened? Aki was definitely not a fiend because if he was, he wouldn't have been Aki anymore but just the Gun Devil but we explicitly see that Aki was still in there but couldn't help attacking Denji. That means that Aki was most likely a hybrid as well just like Denji and Makima possibly forced the Gun Devil to become Aki's heart (or fuse with him in general) and continued to make the latter hunt down Denji.
    Can anyone confirm or deny this? It was never really shown how Aki got the Gun Devil's abilities. Love the nickname "Aki-47" that a lot of people use for this form tho lol

      Aki was most definitely a hybrid, but controlled by Makima to kill Denji. That's the only good explanation i have for this because as we know that he was alive while fighting Denji, but also not in control of his powers (unlike other hybrids)

      @@nathanj3528 Aki is a fiend not a hybrid. Makima said it in chapter 77 that its the Gun Fiend and he doesn't have any of the characteristics that all the other hybrids have.
      And just like the video mention, Aki is one of the recorded victim on the Gun Devil attack.
      The reason why the Gun Fiend is hallucinating about the snowball fight is because back in chapter 54 Violence Fiend explain that when a devil tried to possess a corpse with an intact enough brain to become a fiend, the personality and memories of the corpse will affect the devil personality when it become a fiend. The most obvious example of this is the Violence Fiend where the brain of the corpse cause the fiend despite being a personification of violence to prefer peace and love instead.
