Revisiting this arc made me realize that the creepy “one for pleasure” line the old man has about the kids was intentional misdirection from Fujimoto. The idea of Santa Claus or an old man dressed up as Santa being a pedophile isn’t a terribly original when it comes to dark comedy- in fact, I think it’s a bit in an old Shane Dawson video- but if you’ve read Fire Punch (one of his other manga) you know Fujimoto isn’t afraid to go that route. A creepy old man being the villain is easy for the reader to believe & accept, especially since a lot of media (& even Fujimoto’s own work) that handles darker topics like child abuse & SA paints the same picture of an older male abuser & a younger female victim. However, like the rest of CSM, the Santa Claus reveal subverts our expectations and challenges our conceptions of who can be an abuser and who can be a victim. If Himeno and Makima were adult men and Denji was a teenage girl, both fans and in-universe characters alike would respond far more negativity to their sexual/romantic advances towards him, but just like the real Santa Claus who was actually controlling & manipulating her partner, people don’t expect female characters to be predatory. Women are expected to give rather than take, which is why Makima was able to hurt Denji the way she did. Whereas Denji was immediately put off by being offered unconditional support and help from Beam, another guy, he accepts whatever Makima has to give without a second thought. This is not to say Denji is sexist or anything, just that Makima purposely played into his expectations by giving him a happy & fulfilling life only to take it away and push him to his breaking point.
I thought the "for pleasure" line was a different misdirection, making us think Old Man SC is a pedophile, but Santa Clause actually had the intention of making even more perfect dolls.

The international assassins arc was so cool, but seems to be overlooked. At least during most online discussions. It also has one of the coolest reveals with Cosmos.
I would like to know why, her powers and set up are really cool but she is incredibly flat and basic as an antagonist, her motivation is to kill makima because her government ordered her to but we don't know anything about her and her feelings towards her job, powers and life. That's why i think every other major antagonist is better, those being katana man, reze, quanxi, makima and yoru. Hell, i think that even the inmortal brothers, yuko and even tolka are better than her.
@@AnlaVerse I mean, you're not wrong in some things, that's why I said personal favorite, I don't think she was as well characterized as other villains, but I think the concept was very interesting and her doll contract specificly was very cool to see, and yes I think Fujimoto could've shown more about her to get into the character but that's the flaw of many characters in the first part, in Santa's case was that she was used more as a threat than as a character, you could almost say she was a devil herself and not a person. So with the word 'underrated' you could say I meant underrated even for the author himself, she's my no. 1 villain who I would love to see come back (although I doubt that's possible), so I can learn more about the character.

I thought so too. And I honestly never found anything to disprove her being the Doll Devil. When she spoke through the Tolka doll she called herself the Doll Devil... I figured the reason she could make devil contracts is through her perfect dolls. Kinda like how Makima can do the same through the people she controls.
@@wertm123 There is a part of the manga where she says she made a contract with the Doll Devil. So yeah before that I was also confused if she was a devil too.
She is a very underrated character and villain in my opinion. I feel like people completely forgot her despite being the villain of the arc. Anyways I love her blue hair so much, she's so cute. Great video!
Probably because that arc also features the Darkness Devil, which might be the biggest show stealer of the entire series, only needing a single scene to burn itself into the reader's brain.
I find it interesting how much of a chess Game was that arc. Public security never intended to protect Denji, their goal was Santa, a really powerful and dangerous entity under the orders of another country. While Santa's objective wasn't killing Denji, her goal was Makima, a really powerful and dangerous entity under the orders of another country. Maybe it's because of how "easy" Santa's defeat looks, but Santa was basically Germany's Makima. This arc could be resumed as "Makima vs Santa" and Makima "barely" won. Santa tried to use Hell and Darkness devil to kill Makima while Makima used Quanxi and Denji to "kill" Santa.
This is how I interpreted it: Santa Claus doesnt have a "Real Body", it has grown to be a hivemind of perfect dolls and dolls, perfect dolls have been groomed into becoming such, and so require alot of time and energy to be made, and we know there are many of these spread through out the world. The woman is just one of these perfect dolls. We see tolka in a bed with teddy bears around him, so I do certainly think that Santa first takes children and raise them for years for the purpose of making one of these dolls, im not sure how that would work with an old man like the german one, so I must assume that this has been going on for a good while, expanding the hivemind slowly over decades. Unlike normal dolls, we see that Perfect dolls are all able to make contracts and retain some level of autonomy and self control. thats evident from the woman making a contract with the hell and curse devils, and with Tolka, now a perfect doll, being controled by makima into making a contract to take everyone back to earth. So that confirmed that these perfect dolls are still able to be just as human as any one, but are part of a collective hivemind that they call a family. You have an interesting point with santa claus being taken to the library of halloween, but the way I see it, like i said, even tho they are a hivemind to an unknown degree they still are treated as individual humans, yet that connection serves to share knowledge with eachother, so what I think happened, is that that one doll (the woman) did get her individual mind destroyed by the overwhelming knowledge of the universe, and that was shared amongst all dolls in the hivemind she was part of too. (assuming there could be more hiveminds, were other people to make a contract with the doll devil too). In other words, I dont think the woman is the "true body" of santa claus, just another one who was groomed into one, maybe the original body has been long gone and the hivemind survives on the perfect dolls created (after all even when the woman dies her dolls are still around) I just wish we could get more exposition on santa claus, I honestly found the woman so interesting both as a character and as a villain, that I was kinda sad taht we didnt even get as much as a first name to her. (me and my friend have taken to calling her Ekaterina or Katya just cuz we wanted her to have a name lol)
Santa's doll devil form really reminds me of that one painter that survived the holocaust and ww2 and painted morbid alginations of thin bodies and monsters. I don't recall his name though, but hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about! His pieces were a way for him to cope with his traumas and express the horrors of war he witnessed and lived through. If I knew more about him off the top of my head, I could probably find more connections and share my theory a little better.
So like, just now a thought appeared. Devils in Chainsaw man are based on the fears of humans, bigger the fear stronger the devil. So the saying "We have nothing to fear except fear itself" popped into my head. Do you think there is a "FEAR" devil? And to that end who do you think would be stronger Darkness Devil or Death Devil?
Makimas chains ⛓️ reminds me of how each person puts their hand on someone's shoulder then the next person touches someone else shoulder and so on to dollifying reminds me of a chain of sorts.
I like how during the usual "Meti alliteration" at the start of the video, you only showed SC herself at the end. A nice tying in of the character's themes into the video's editing.
Was wondering when someone would make a video specifically for Santa Claus, glad it ended up being u who made one of the first. Also, was waiting for the next csm targeted vid, so this was perfectly timed! Thx babe :)
I thought this was going to be about how scary Saint Nick was. Santa Claus is scary both the puppet master and the one that sneaks in to your house to leave gifts.
unrelated question: when a Devil is consumed and their fear erased, does it actually change history? because stuff like the Nazis and nuclear weapons apparently don’t exist anymore. but history is extremely delicate; even one changed event could result in the present being significantly different. the Nazis and nuclear weapons are _major_ parts of history, and if those don’t exist, the present world and politics of Chainsaw Man should be vastly different from ours. the only notable difference in that world that I recall is that the Soviet Union never collapsed, but that’s only one difference.
yes and no, people's perception of history likely changes to accomodate a reality where people don't know what a holocaust is, but the Holocaust still canonically happened and Auschwitz is still a thing that exists because of this, alongside other factors, the USSR still exists in chainsaw man, despite the fact that it takes place in 1997 and the USSR disbanded in 1991
I think it's more like it's removed from the collective consciousness, think like the Royal Titan mass memory manipulation ability in AOT. When pochita devours a devil it's probably poofed out of everyone's memories.
I've read Chainsaw Man over 3 times and I always appreciate these videos analysing characters and the series selectively. Santa Claus was the most unpredictable thing I've read or watched and I usually see things coming a kilometre away. It's so well handled. I'm still reading Fire Punch, so I'm still not quite familiar with the way Fujimoto writes but it is brilliant from how Chainsaw Man went and how Fire Punch is currently going. Great video as usual, I'll always appreciate these as they give so much more insight when seen from other people's perspectives and analysis.
For me it’s the darkness devil. I stopped reading part 2 in the middle of the fall devil (just gonna binge it) but those primitive fear devils seem insane lol
I think the connections to American Mcgee's Alice series is an especially interesting detail to the character of Santa Claus. As if you didn't know, the main villain of the second game,Alice Madness Returns, is a being known as "The Dollmaker". I would be very surprised if Fujimoto didn't use this as an inspiration for the doll devil's design and abilities.
Genuinely thought that you were going to say Santa Claus (the real one kinda, not from csm) originated from like a horror story in ancient Japan, I was wondering what the thumbnail was about, and it took me 40 seconds to realise this channel was meti's.
it's no mistake that Christmas was defeated by Halloween, the winter holiday has been over-stereotyped by commercialism with little room for growth, Halloween on the other-hand has infinite form and ultimately overwhelms Santa Claus. 🎃> 🎄
I believe the confrontation between Makima and Santa Is a battle of dreams, both formulating their owns aspirations and the expectation for their puppets, but Denji is enlightened by the flame of knowledge like the prometheus myth and turn be able to walk a little in the fraction of darkness(the unknown, but he reminds his power is limited and the bigger the light the biggest is the shadow he makes.
10:00 see, I interpreted that differently. I read it as, SHE felt guilt, for lying to and manipulating him, and betraying him to turn him into a puppet
Yo, if I may suggest a video theme for you, what about an anaalysis of the justice devil? Their role could've been filled by any other devil, and yet the choice does seem somewhat deliberate. But I have not yet managed to fully comprehend what their motivations were and why did their powers manifest like they did in the manga
I think he was inspired by Wonder Woman's lasso of truth a bit. A whip is accurate, versatile. It also resembled a tapeworm, a parasite. Justice isn't always fair, but without it siphoning off excess evil, we'd collapse. It preys upon people who felt alienated, that felt like society owed them. It's powerful stuff-- you should Google the mangaka's interviews. He's deep
It's a humorous concept, pushed in Anime and Manga, that Teenagers REMOTELY understand the depths of despair or the true savagery of human emotions. Highschool nonsense is silly absurdity compared to the unrelenting adult world.
Can someone explain why the cosmos devil just makes you think of Halloween? I get that that’s the point but is there like an actual connection between Halloween and the cosmos or is that actually just bs meant to confuse us.
12:33 this makes me question: if she is able to make hybrids into dolls, how, and what process would it take? Also, if that’s the case, why doesn’t denji turn into a doll? And if it was due to the fire condition, does it have foreshadowing implications for part 2’s eternity devil arc?
...See I love the analysis, but almost all of her character feels in reference to Coraline? The changing of the eyes, the spider-like form similar to the witch in that movie. Dark blue hair, large eyes, seeks a newer life, and the focus on her near immortality. Similar to the witch but with the design of Coraline (also, brightly colored clothes to mirror their hair. Coralines yellow / blue to Claus' purple / orange)

The international assassins arc was so cool, but seems to be overlooked. At least during most online discussions. It also has one of the coolest reveals with Cosmos.
Even though I saw the Cosmo twist coming, it was still satisfying. Good writing is good
It’s my fave
“The delicate and dangerous devil divination distributor disturbingly designing a definitive doll” interesting
Honestly the most underrated villain in the series and my personal favorite
Fr!
Explain why
@@JigokuShoujoYuki not really I just saw her as a side villain without much importance .her death was very simple and boring. She literally died by a idiotic girl screaming Halloween I mean how embarrassing Is that . And she got completely overshadowed by darkness devil entirely. she's forgettable hence why, not well written
i honestly thought that santa WAS the doll devil, kinda like the Makima of Germany. also i would like to see a summary of the novel
I thought so too. And I honestly never found anything to disprove her being the Doll Devil. When she spoke through the Tolka doll she called herself the Doll Devil... I figured the reason she could make devil contracts is through her perfect dolls. Kinda like how Makima can do the same through the people she controls.
Nah cause she made a contract with the darkness devil. She got to hell through the contract with that dude
@@wertm123 There is a part of the manga where she says she made a contract with the Doll Devil. So yeah before that I was also confused if she was a devil too.
@@brianford4914 which chapter ?
@@number-qx1kw The chapter where she gets Halloween'd (I think it's 69 or 70)
Doll Devil and Control Devil also seems like a great parallel - both sort to manipulate others though through different means
Santa wasn't the actual doll devil through
She is a very underrated character and villain in my opinion.
The arc is so fast past and has like 5 antagonists doing something at the same time. I can't blame anyone for getting lost in the blur.
Probably my most favorite fight when Denji shows up. He goes above and beyond in living up to the hero of hell's name as the Chainsaw Man
I AM THE HERO OF LIGHT
this REALLY helped me understand what was happening in that arc. nice video!
Finally, Santa Claus might be the most underrated character in chainsaw man writing wise.
Masterfully written/spoken and edited analysis thanks for the vid!
Definitely talk about Buddy story’s your work gets me hyped up for reading the 2nd part
Probably the funniest video to release this time of the year lmfao
Santa Claus' daisy chain possesion thing really freaked me out. It's like Invasion of the Bodysnatchers on steroids
I really hope that is a season 2 of Chainsaw Man comes out, they will plan it out in such a manner than Santa Claus will debut in December
I don't think season 2 is enough to adapt all of international assassination, they might just leave a huge cliffhanger just before the fight started.
they should just make it part 2 of season 1 instead of another season. it would fit the manga better
@@JWPainter it doesn't really have that many chapters
@@FL_MENTALITY it doesn't really matter how the episodes are segmented
@@JWPainternah season 2 can get to the end of part 1 tbh these arcs happen extremely fast
This is how I interpreted it:
Santa Claus doesnt have a "Real Body", it has grown to be a hivemind of perfect dolls and dolls, perfect dolls have been groomed into becoming such, and so require alot of time and energy to be made, and we know there are many of these spread through out the world.
Ekaterina is good 👍
Is it a German or Russian name?
@@Armela17 Ekaterina is the russian form of the name "Catherine"
The only thing that had me questioning Santa Claus is what did she had to exchange for receiving such a terrifying ability?
She is very ill so something to do with her health probably
Chainsaw Heart, the ability is for killing Makima
5 dollar
@@Prince-Silly Pretty sure they're talking about her contract with the puppet devil, not the darkness devil.
@@yaderx1 oh.... I always think she give her life, cuz there's no way a human could control such a massive power...
Zdzisław Beksiński?
That’s the guy
19:45 Buddy Stories would be great to see
But in the end, Halloween was better than Christmas.
I honestly hope Santa Claus doesn’t return. Her defeat was so powerful, satisfying, and final to me.
So like, just now a thought appeared. Devils in Chainsaw man are based on the fears of humans, bigger the fear stronger the devil. So the saying "We have nothing to fear except fear itself" popped into my head. Do you think there is a "FEAR" devil? And to that end who do you think would be stronger Darkness Devil or Death Devil?
i feel like chainsaw man is one of the only stories that confuses me the more i see stuff about it. i might have to just watch it lol
Thx babe :)
Let me be honest, before I read chainsaw man manga, this video was the most confusing and absolutely terrifying video I ever saw recommended to me
LOL
11:05 I guess you could say they inherit the will of The Boss.
I'd be quite interested in hearing your takes on the light novel
she is cute
I think the way Denji killed Santa Klaus by burning himself was a direct reference with Fire Punch, also a Tatsuki Fujimoto manga
I also see a lot of the Other Mother from Coraline in the Doll Devil's design
Funny to think that Halloween is inmune to Gojo's domain
i would love to hear about Hirofumi Yoshida when we get to know him better ;)
Santa Claus was really a major part into solidifying the International Assassins arc as one of the best if not best arcs in Chainsaw Man
I really want to hear about the Buddy Stories light novel. I had never even heard of it before...
i loved the mgsv video, i really wish for a video about the cruel fate of paz Ortega
Those presents gave me PTSD.. and those elves.. dear lord.
I thought this was going to be about how scary Saint Nick was. Santa Claus is scary both the puppet master and the one that sneaks in to your house to leave gifts.
unrelated question: when a Devil is consumed and their fear erased, does it actually change history? because stuff like the Nazis and nuclear weapons apparently don’t exist anymore. but history is extremely delicate; even one changed event could result in the present being significantly different. the Nazis and nuclear weapons are _major_ parts of history, and if those don’t exist, the present world and politics of Chainsaw Man should be vastly different from ours. the only notable difference in that world that I recall is that the Soviet Union never collapsed, but that’s only one difference.
yes and no, people's perception of history likely changes to accomodate a reality where people don't know what a holocaust is, but the Holocaust still canonically happened and Auschwitz is still a thing that exists
because of this, alongside other factors, the USSR still exists in chainsaw man, despite the fact that it takes place in 1997 and the USSR disbanded in 1991
I think it's more like it's removed from the collective consciousness, think like the Royal Titan mass memory manipulation ability in AOT.
This is hands down my favorite arc! I feel it was a bit rushed though. Can’t wait to see it in the anime
Please talk to us about the Chainsaw man Buddy Stories!
Not to mention the themes of manipulation and abuse present in the series, especially in the sequel and the upcoming prequel
She was really evil but I can understand her desire to kill Makima
Genuinely thought that you were going to say Santa Claus (the real one kinda, not from csm) originated from like a horror story in ancient Japan, I was wondering what the thumbnail was about, and it took me 40 seconds to realise this channel was meti's.
it's no mistake that Christmas was defeated by Halloween, the winter holiday has been over-stereotyped by commercialism with little room for growth, Halloween on the other-hand has infinite form and ultimately overwhelms Santa Claus. 🎃> 🎄
wait this isn't about christmas
I believe the confrontation between Makima and Santa Is a battle of dreams, both formulating their owns aspirations and the expectation for their puppets, but Denji is enlightened by the flame of knowledge like the prometheus myth and turn be able to walk a little in the fraction of darkness(the unknown, but he reminds his power is limited and the bigger the light the biggest is the shadow he makes.
10:00
see, I interpreted that differently. I read it as, SHE felt guilt, for lying to and manipulating him, and betraying him to turn him into a puppet
I think that that's what the mangaka meant. So it was like an ironic lesson, a last curtain reveal before she turned him
It makes me sad that so many people dont even remember Santa Claus, it's such a good character
I had no idea Fujimoto took inspiration from Dororo! Love that story~
That mf always hopping down chimneys uninvited
Please talk more about the light novel, didn't know it exists
He's deep
If you can read German you know Santa Clauses plan before the reveal
i JUST finished this arc a few days ago, i was on the edge of my seat the entire time
S3 of CSM is gonna be WILD
I just love how persona music can pretty much fit with anything
It's a humorous concept, pushed in Anime and Manga, that Teenagers REMOTELY understand the depths of despair or the true savagery of human emotions. Highschool nonsense is silly absurdity compared to the unrelenting adult world.
Absolutely the cheekiest upload date for this
My favorite antagonist in part 1, the transformation had an amazing design
This a great surprise!, Also when i first read read the manga the doll devil santa claus was so scary
I'll happily watch a video on Buddy Stories.
Merry Christmas everyone! But let's hope y'all never see this Santa Claus ever.
Good choice of bgm, a fan of persona as well
7:20 isn't this from that Nier automata music video?
Can someone explain why the cosmos devil just makes you think of Halloween? I get that that’s the point but is there like an actual connection between Halloween and the cosmos or is that actually just bs meant to confuse us.
12:33 this makes me question: if she is able to make hybrids into dolls, how, and what process would it take? Also, if that’s the case, why doesn’t denji turn into a doll? And if it was due to the fire condition, does it have foreshadowing implications for part 2’s eternity devil arc?
Fujimoto be like "I'm not explaining shit, you figure it out"
If you think about it Santa Claus would have been an even bigger threat than Makima herself, if she was still alive.
The ability to change her consciousness alternate bodies of different nationalities is insane
didn't even realize 1 % of this while reading it, but good for you
This is the Santa Claus I don’t want leaving presents under my tree
Merry christmas
The frog gave me goosebumps😅
Merry Christmas!
Her devil design actually reminds me a lot of Tsutomu Nihei's designs from Blame and Aposimz
This was a fantastic video
...See I love the analysis, but almost all of her character feels in reference to Coraline? The changing of the eyes, the spider-like form similar to the witch in that movie. Dark blue hair, large eyes, seeks a newer life, and the focus on her near immortality. Similar to the witch but with the design of Coraline (also, brightly colored clothes to mirror their hair. Coralines yellow / blue to Claus' purple / orange)
Halloween
this has got to be THE WORST take on this manga and its characters.. "inspired by funroku doll making? silent hill??? Dororo?.. SALLY THE STUPID RAGDOLL???
is this dufus just listing any movie with a doll in it?? the very concept of puppeteering have been dated back to at least 5th century bc! The MYOPIC notion that fujimoto would be influenced by his VERY small list of cultural reference and tryin to narrow fujimoto's influence is ASININE AT BEST.
the sheer arrogance to think someone else would only be limited to your own set of influences ... WHILE in a complete different culture and media exposure is ASTOUNDINGLY HORRIFIC in this video.
I will let her peg idc, by GOD I DON'T CARE I WILL LE-
I'm not the same man I was a few minutes ago, I apologize. 🙇🏿♂
Duden fujimoto likes coralline , that’s so cool 😮
