The Gun Devil is one of my favorite background threats in a series, something that leaves a long lasting impression on the world it exists in both physically in the world but also narratively in themes of Chainsaw Man. Also his relation to Aki leads to one of the most satisfyingly written heartbreaks in current Jump.

Hey at least he has a sense of humor
I’d still die in the collateral even though I was born in October
I'll take it
The gun devil's attack scene has to be one of the greatest displays of force I've ever seen in a manga
What other series you seen also was pretty destructive to you?
And Speed, that Devil travaled like 30k kilometers in 10 minutes.
@@Dr.HooWho Excluding Dragon Ball, I think the only kind of "massive" destructive scene was in OPM with Saitama dividing the sky because of his powerful punch while fighting Boros. Or with the introduction of Koro-sensei in Assassination Classroom wiping out in half the moon. If we're going into the bottom line and it's not a series but it's a short film, on Shelter we literally see Earth been smashed by an another planet or moon.
As if any other anime can't have their own OP segment, but to me this ISNT even on the lvl of Badass :(
Facts
Friendly reminder, the 7 seconds of the gun devil we got was only 20% of its max, amped to an obscene degree by a pact sacrifice of over 300,000,000 years of life.
Incorrect it's actually around 270,000,000 years of life chainsawman takes place in 1997 the US only starting hitting 300 million in 2007.
It was 20% because us had just some of the fragments? Or did they say it somewhere else?
@@shadow-kry2167 Makima states later how the diferent % remains are divided in diferent countrys. The US holding the Major %
Eh, I don't think I buy that it was "amped up." It seemed like that sacrifice was simply the cost of forming a contract with the 20% Gun Devil. If those lost years actually fed directly into its power, than I'd have to imagine that the president would either have sacrificed less in order to minimize the loss, or would have sacrificed even more in order to guarantee Makima's demise.
And more importantly, buffing it like that would - from a narrative perspective - heavily undermine the idea that so much destruction was caused by 1/5 of the Gun Devil's full power, which I don't believe the author would do after all that build up he did around the Gun Devil's strength.
I really want to see the Gun devil at full power tbh
My jaw dropped when they showed the names of dead victims. It was awesome and scary. All the names made the damage feel more real. Great decision by the artist.
yeah unlike many stories where people are killed on masse without any thought jsut to drive home the villain's danger, this drives home that the Gun Devil didn't jsut kill faceless masses, it killed PEOPLE.
Pretty insane to think of
Especially the *One* person. You know
And all those names belong to real people as well. Fujimoto basically found the phonebook for his hometown and started writing all the names in it down.
What make that even more impactful was Aki just listed in a random spot. He was not special
the "12 seconds" scene will be seared into my brain as one of the coolest yet most utterfly horrifying things i ever witnessed in a manga

I have read a lot of great manga, but I don't think anything else has made me feel like I did when it listed off the names.
The anime either butchers the scene, leaving you without feeling anything. or it became an absolute iconic scene. to the point that its terrifying, letting you feel this crippling dread leaving you to think about it for weeks. Hell, if possible there might even be a chance the anime make the scene 10x better than the manga. (Like jjba part 5)
That scene was probably my favorite in the manga, it was so different from the way everything else was presented, fujimoto is an amazing writer

That's one I'd honestly like to see as a kind of 'The fourth wall won't protect you' type character. They don't just speak to the other characters but equally to us, the audience. Perhaps as a somber reminder that indeed, everything's gonna end one day. Our day, this moment, this sentence, your time on this planet, the earth itself, the series of Chainsaw Man, all of it. And he'll be there, waiting for us at the finish line. Once we've seen our last sunrise and partied our last party, seen all the sights for us, and punched our clocks. @@mastergamerleafer that'd be interesting though I don't think it'd be something that directly gets involved. Its patient, it can wait. You never know when the end will come. But it knows and you can't stop it. Delay it, maybe. But stopping the End is impossible.
Maybe it took special interest in the Chainsaw Devil due to it putting an end to the existence of things far greater then itself, things that it shouldn't of been able to make meet their end. Not only that, but it prevented them from returning to the cycle of death devils go through.
We have war devil now. Which involves guns and much more
The gun devil's fantastic because its SUCH a massive bait and switch. the story set shim up as THE ultimat big bad, with people claiming they're working udner his orders upon making a deal with him, and other devils empowering themselves with his pieces, and his defeat seemingly being the main goal of Makima, Aki and by extension the rest of the Public Security gang.
But then the bombshell drops: the people claiming they were ordered by the gun devil? They were LYING, they were jsut doing what THEY wanted to do and used him as an excuse (subtly referenced in Makima's dealings with a Yakuza). The other devils were jsut using his power as they wished, driven by a personal dsire to kill chainsaw man.
The gun Devil isn't even AWAKE. Hes split into peices and kept in storage by several world powers and only acts when released by someone else. He is NOT an active force, he's barely even an actualy CHARACTER.
And yet dspite not being the REAL villain, the actual big bad uses his presence to further her own goals, AND the gun devil hmself is still a massive destructive threat in and of his own.
If the gun devil is contained, then who was Makima fighting? I'm confused there.

The Gun Devil was honestly one of my favorite parts about CSM Part 1. The Devil of the Unknown would be the strongest devil in existence
That’s just the darkness devil
I’d say the death devil would be the strongest.
Everyone innately fears death, even devils (devil fears do contribute to the powers of a devil, this is confirmed by Makima) Not to mention in this world where everyone is dying left and right, it would only increase the fear of death. The media loves to make us scared
i like how the authors set it up, in part one we have makima who represents the first horseman of apocalypse, conquest, and now in part 2 we have the war devil. Which means we gonna get at least 2 more parts with a famine devil and a death devil in that order
I'm confident in saying that either part 2 is very short, or the end part 2 is the end of chainsawman, it just feels like it would be way too long and dragged out to have 4 parts to it
@@loljptrollergami7325 Idk, the vibe I got from the ending of part 1 was that this was only the beginning, plus we still have a lot of unanswered questions, (why are devils spilling over into Earth, the origins of the chainsaw devil's power, the primal fear devils, Heaven and what exactly the deal is with it, etc). Too many loose ends that need to be addressed, plus Power's return feels pretty far off in the future. I think 4 parts is a pretty fair estimation with all that in mind.
@@arinloche858 Devils go to earth because they die in hell, presumably something that has been happening since the start of history in that universe, the primal fear devils are pretty easily explainable too, they're devils that embody fears felt by all living beings, which makes them so strong that they haven't ever died, heaven simply doesn't seem to exist, and powers return was hinted at in that one image of denji with nayuta on his back. The origin of the chainsaw devil's power is completely unknown though so I agree on that one point. But yeah I still think four parts would be way too long for this type of story
@@arinloche858 part 2 War would represent the search of the answer to "Where did the Chainsaw Devil's power come from?"
Part 3 Famine would explain WHY are there devils on the surface of the Earth in the first place and why now of all times
Part 4 Death would the be the last one, the road to heaven, a train ticket to god itself and give the ultimate answers to, also possibly introducing counterparts to the devils, the "Nephilim"
@@edgieststalker8141 I'm personally of the opinion that the chainsaw devil is the death devil, or at least obtained it's power somehow. Because ultimately when you think of the fear of death why are we afraid of it? Because we fear that there is nothing afterwards, that we will be forgotten, like those the chainsaw eats. That's not saying the actual death devil won't make a return, honestly I think if they set things up like that it could make for a climactic and terrifying main antagonist.

The gun devil being defeated for years is one of my favorite plot twists in manga
What makes this so brilliant is that the writer actually took an object that was feared and turned it into a more fearful monster
Imagine a devil for Power(the concept, no the character). Power, as a concept, is looked up upon, strove for, and even obsessed by, but it is also heavily feared, to the point of instinctual fear. Even people who do not fear death fear people who are of power or have immense power. Entire nations are afraid of the power of devils, especially primordial ones. The main group fears the primordial Darkness Devil, mainly because of it's might and strength, it's POWER. Hope they go more deeper in what kind of concepts and fears can become devils in the future.

@@salahudinyubi09 they totally also fear the power itself. Also, power isn't always about abilities and skills. It can be from people of high status and designation, people of power. The most chilling part about the death toll breakdown is they sound pretty close to yearly gun related deaths in those countries. Edit: Likely closer to those killed in the line of duty and deaths due to military action of those countries whether it be against their civilians or foreign powers I wasn’t clear with my original comment, so rather than a symbolic condemnation of civilian owned firearms the Gun Devil more so represents the fear and use of firearms overall even by the government, so in a way in the Chainsaw man universe the Governments of chainsaw man were keeping pieces of the Gun devil not as some doomsday weapon but they were trying to change the nature of the devil itself by changing the primary object of its fear, rather than a chaotic force wieldable by anyone where anyone could be the victim they change it into a force only wielded by those within positions of power through strict gun laws. You’ve seen the Darkness devil and it’s representation of the astronauts but I ask besides from an aesthetic and thematic standpoint what is the in universe explanation for a primal devil having astronauts in its representation, rather than some ancient fear of the dark or unknown like a prowling wolf or nondescript predator lurking in wait. I propose that the changing of these fears and the expansion of them within the majority of humans changes the devil itself and it’s nature a fact which the world powers in Chainsaw Man are well aware of.
Looking forward to see how this thing looks like in the anime. Good job on the video and I'm looking forward to more Chainsaw Man content since part 2 just started.

I wish to make an indept analysis one day like this video but the gun devil was so incredibly hyped up.
From when we 1st hear of it, to hearing what it did and how one of our character's lives was ruined by what it did and has been seeking revenge. On top of all of this, Makima said she'd do one thing for Denji if he killed it and being Denji, originally wanted to probably get laid so like. Motivation.
And it could have been such an epic fight! With fight scenes getting like, 500k views, easily could have been a really hyped and well choreographed battle getting millions of view.
Instead we get to see it from Aki's point of view, and how to him, it was a snowball fight while he waited for his brother to get a mitten.
That choice made this a 'fight' scene one that has and always will stick with me and the raw emotion I felt watching Aki fling 'snowballs' at people.
It's brilliant. It was such a risk but Fujimoto wasn't even afraid to take that, it's so clear how confident he was in executing that from the setup as early as chapter 4(?)
Wonder how strong the death devil would be
He is propably strongest devil of four horsmen of apocalypse
@@OK-Opportunity yeah, most likely. I think other primal fears devils could be the strongest devils
@@blackreaper378 Unknown probably, or fear itself
The death devil is probably the strongest devil in existence, considering that basically every fear is just the fear of death with extra steps
@@Skibbutz Death devil is probably elder god tier because all living creatures fear death, not just humans but animals, maybe even plants too
i like how in the background for mexico at 4 mins you used the part from revengance that shit funny
Oh god i sure read that thumbnail horribly wrong
😳
0:45 The first RUclipsr advertising of Dungeon Fighter that I've ever seen.
"oh im caught up with chainsaw man so i shouldn't encounter any spoilers"
*gets Yu-Gi-Oh spoiled*
17:01 man Im happy to see a mgs cutscene vid.
oh my god chainsaw man both had a plot point of having nukes annihilated AND had a nuke metaphor the whole time
I like how he acknowledges Zach as the gun identifier
So how does devil overlap work I wonder. Some fears lead naturally into another (you could fear heights or deadly animals because you fear death, or sharp objects because you fear pain, etc) so are devils of that nature kin? Allies? Rivals?
I mainly wanna know because that could have a LOT of implications for why Chainsaw is so absurdly powerful
I mean almost every fear leads back to the fear of death
@@thecatinthehatwithabat9903Consider primal fears then, that just plays a big role into why they're functionally immortal no?
The fact you used the raiden sombrero clip as the part for Mexico is very funny
I love how the Gun Devil is literally Juuzo from NGL on that Dark Souls grind
2:04 is when the ad ends
I wanna see the original devils again, like the darkness devil...
Thank you for the video.
When this eventually gets animated, they should absolutely use a classical music piece or something related
Also, Oda (One Piece's Author) is referenced as a death. spelled the same way and mixed with other authors.
I second this idea, I'd personally set the carnage to the tune of Verdi's Messa da Requiem -Dies Iraes
I think it should show the gun devil destroying things, but have the entire thing be completely silent. Or have the parts where you see it shooting be the sound of muffled gun shots, crashing debris, and screams, but whenever it cuts to the list of victims, have it be completely silent.
Bro the rvb clip caught me off guard💀💀💀
I'd like to think that the Gun devil when he was defeated was because makima and chainsawman teamed up to deal with him cause the bullets flying around interfered in their fight. Its possible that after they defeated the gun devil makima inmediately used a contract with the hell devil to push csm into hell where the other weapon devils surprise attacked him almost defeating him since he was weakened after being shot by the gun devil.
I'm glad Zack was mentioned in this video, he definitely could identify them all
What would be the strongest devil? The death devil maybe ?
Probably the War or Darkness devil
Fear Devil
The End Devil
Just my question that if there's death devil then will there be a life devil? And will there be devils based on elements like fire, ice and more, i mean they can be really powerful since they are part of nature tho
@@heartfulharry2185
I don't think people fear life that much tbh and most people would want to have life while only a small few who won't.
Nature elements could be strong however due to natural disasters that are caused by them.
nice to see you also know mikeburnfire
I think that the gun Devil only did the month pun thing because it was in a silly goofy mood
Love your work!
I'd love to see video about monsoon. Masterpiece of monsoon or nihilizm of monsoon or something.
Memes…
The DNA of the soul!
They are the culture. Everything we pass on.
Great analysis Meti, keep it up!
i feel like if the zombie devil was actually smart it would be really strong bc he can just cause zombies to spread awareness making people scared of it then just repeat the cycle until its a overpowered devil
Seeing a mikeburnfire reference in a CSM video was… not what I expected. Ya love to see it.
The names listed are supposedly all the people that live in a town in Japan.
At least that's what I remember hearing, you can look into it
The names that shows that died in the gun devils attack where actually names that we're registered in fujimotos hometown.
Gotta say. I've read manga for decades and I've read some very gory bloody ones. But the Gun Devil is one of the most terrifying things I've ever seen in a long time. What makes it so fearsome is that it can kill you at any time from anywhere. You have almost no way of defending yourself.
