    We all seem to use the same "dog accent" when praising the dog and we all seem to kiss the dog on the face the same way.
    It reminds me of how chickens all speak the same language even if they are hatched in different places whether they are human-raised or chicken-raised.

      RDR 🌙 There’s a reason for that! It comes with our perception of cute - big eyes, big and round head, small and low facial features, etc. All of these are also facial features of a human baby and most baby mammals. Science has shown that talking in “parentese” can grab a baby’s attention faster and harder due to its higher pitch, teach a baby words faster due to its repetitiveness, and build a stronger bond. Seeing a cute dog evokes the same reaction we would have if we saw a cute baby, so we talk to them the same way.

      Any tips for crate training my Bernedoodle? He is very reluctant to actually go inside. I keep playing with him by throwing his toys inside and feeding him in the crate but he hates staying in it. He will just reach in with his hind legs out and snatch the toy and bring it out. I’ve never forced him in. And should I ever just shut the gate on him and let him bark it out? Thanks a lot!

      I would say focus on the moving in and out before attempting duration. Make the going in and coming out fun and dynamic and add layers of duration slowly before you shut the door. I don't know if you've seen them yet, but we have a couple of crate training games/drills:

I HATE YELLING, CURSING!! There are some trainers that do those things and I find it very unprofessional and annoying.

      Hi Shana! Thanks for the feedback! I'd LOVE to put out more content, but we just bought a new training facility and are converting the second floor to our living space. We're just putting 110% into that building right now and I'm sneaking in video creation when I can. I'm expecting that this winter ought to open up. I have lots of new videos planned!
      As for travel, I'd never really thought about it. I mean, there are tons of heavyweights in the training world that do that kind of thing that are better and well known than me. I suppose if some kind of function or convention asked I'd come!

  • @MissElisabelle
    @MissElisabelle 5 лет назад +2

    Honestly my favourite channel, such a pity there is not much content, but I am grateful you are sharing these tips for free.
    Unrelated question: my dog is a large Maremma mix, and he is almost 8 months. He has always been wary of men because of the way they always approached him (grabbing his head, snouth, slapping his back, thinking that a puppy meant to be a large dog can handle rough play), and now we've reached the point where, if he's unleashed, he runs at men and barks at them, VERY closely, like touching their hips with his head and barking.
    So we never let him off leash unless there are just dogs or we're alone. It doesn't matter if there are other owners with the dogs, as all of his attention is focused on dogs, he doesn't care if there are men around.
    I have always worked on him, by changing direction whenever I saw him about to bark at men, and praising for being good. So far he's doing fine, there are days when he actually goes to men very calmly and demands to be petted. BUT, my family does not train him, and this slows down his progress.
    Do you think that this can be considered an aggressive behaviour, or just being reactive? Is there any chance that he can finally be comfortable around men?

    Love the videos, you go deeper than Zak George with the science of why. I have a Yorky rescue 2yrs old. Took us 6 months to get her from being a scared dog to a somewhat normal one. She was doing fine but I was using an electronic fly swatter this week in the kitchen & I think it triggered something, she went running away hiding, now she's shaking, trembling at all times if she's anywhere near the kitchen, always listening to see if someone is in there. She's a mess & I thought she'd get over it but it's been a week. Would love some advice.

    Don't get me wrong, I think your video is the best on this subject for many reasons: excellent presentation, clear instructions, simplicity of the program, etc. But I am sort of surprised that your beautiful backyard is fronting a busy, high-speed roadway, necessitating your use of a long, long line on the leash. Wouldn't a nice fence, with all of the aesthetic considerations taken care of, work much better. It's a nice open space, but obviously you have to exercise additional cautionary measures because of that busy street. A more private backyard would be more pleasant for humans, and safer for other creatures. I know, I know . . . I'm missing something that constrains you: city ordinance, HOA, expense . . . maybe something else. I don't know. But, nevertheless, great video. Informative and clearly superior to the half dozen or so that I have seen. Thumbs up!

    Do I have to have the dog eat out of my hand? My family got us a yorkie a few months ago, and even till this day she refuses to eat out of someone’s hand. She will only eat her food including treats when it’s in her bowl or on the floor. However if we just got done eating something or if we were handling food she would always lick our fingers when we would pick her up. Another thing I noticed, sometimes when her food is in her bowl she would take a few pieces of kibble out the bowl then walk 2 feet away from the bowl and then chew it then she would walk back to the bowl take more food and walk away again and chew it then repeat.

      Just a suggestion... have you tried using two balls? :D If she won't let go of the first one, throw the second one. Maybe she'll get the hang of it. I have a newly adopted dog that likes it when I chase her. I made the mistake of chasing her when she had a ball. Now she only wants to play keep away. I've started reserving games of chase for one specific toy. Hopefully she'll catch on soon.

    Hi, we just got our german shepherd puppy a week ago she is now 9weeks old. We are working on teaching her her name, but I was wondering you also use a “yes” marker when wednesday looks at you. Our puppy has not been aquainted with the marker yet. Do you teach this side by side or teach it in two seperate lessons? Should we start off with teaching the name and then go into the markers?

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  3 года назад +1

      Funny you should ask. The way I teach the Marker is with the Engagement Game, which we JUST-like five minutes ago-posted a video for: ruclips.net/video/ZW0jqMLzcUQ/видео.html

    How do you teach the difference between their name and come? I'm thinking calling their name is asking them to pay attention to you.

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  4 года назад

      Yes, exactly. Their name gets their attention. From there whatever you tell them is up to you. "Come" means "Move over to me," but you could give a direction like "Down," or "Wait," or something else. I do distinguish between their name and other prompts, though.

    I'm a little confused. Is it Name > Reward or Name > Marker (Yes) > Reward?

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  3 года назад

      During the first, Classical Conditioning phase it's Name > Food > Pause. Then, during the Operant phases where you're doing more active stuff, it's Name > Marker > Reward. Hope that helps!

    Hi thanks for your videos! Quick Q: Can I change the name of my puppy I adopted 4 months ago? We first named her Nucita because it was a name associated with the country we are from but, it’s sometimes hard to get people pronounce it correctly so we are thinking for rename her and use an easier name. She is not very responsive to her name right now but if she is close to us and we say her name, she’ll look. What should we do?

    the last dog we had I never gave her a name, she died at 14, but people always said "well how do they come when you call them?",.....c'mon girl, works every time. We go to the vet, and her file would have my last name. No big deal

    Thank you for making great videos! Can you please provide some tips on resource guarding? My dog is very good at leave it and drop it when we’re in “training mode”, but when he actually grabbed something he’s not supposed to (towels, paper etc) he would run around with it and growl when we try to take it away. He does the same thing with new food/toys. He would only drop it if we give lure him with treats. I’m not sure if the treat is reinforcing this behavior?

    Can you make a video that could help me out? When I take my mini dachshund for walks, I cant get him to follow me. He just gets taken over by any smells, marking territory or investigating other things. I get that its part of what he is, but it shouldnt be at the cost of a walk not processing and me having to go back and actually get him. For him a walk is 2 or 3 meter steps between the next thing to smell. Not ideal. I've tried treats, enouragement, being more forcefull, on lead, off lead... what else can I try?

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining

      Yes. Either that, or decrease distance and try again, or decrease distractions. It may need to start inside if you're struggling.

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining

      That means something's off somewhere. That's not a personality quirk. Changes need to be made elsewhere so those things can reset to baseline.

    How to get a dog to enter your car on their own? My 5 month old Great Dane pup is eager to go for a ride and will now willingly jump in my car to take a ride when asked, but doesn’t want to get back into the car when it’s time to leave our destination. She’s getting too big to carry and treats don’t work. Thx

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  5 лет назад

      Hi Summer. Make it active and dynamic. And-I know this sounds counterintuitive-but reward her lavishly when she comes AWAY from the car. Walk up to the point she stops, hang out for one second, and then explode away and have a big reward event. Repetitions teach her that the good stuff is contingent on approaching the car. This is called the Premack Principle in psychology. This will also create that anticipation of the good thing, and condition the approach to the car to be more enjoyable. As this progresses, you ought to be able to get closer and closer and ask for more in order to do it. Always explode away into rewards. Eventually, rewards will come by going THROUGH the car. This could take an afternoon or it could take a couple of weeks. Every dog and owner is a different dynamic. But, in a nutshell, this how I would start this (and I've done exactly this with clients' dogs before).
