- The Society of Thoracic Surgeons launched a new named lecture at its 2020 Annual Meeting. It was in honor of Vivien Thomas, a black surgical technician with only a high school education who steadfastly designed and tested anastomosis of the subclavian artery to the pulmonary artery, resulting in the landmark "blue baby" operation in 1944 for children with tetralogy of Fallot.
The STS 2020 Vivien T. Thomas Lecture was given by Clyde W. Yancy, MD, vice dean for diversity and inclusion and chief of the Division of Cardiology at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago. Dr. Yancy also is a past president of the American Heart Association.

Never could he enter on the front door. Never listed as a co author . Working as a janitor. Racism so alive thankful for Dr. Thomas to continue the journey.
I am a 59 year old tet surviver and Vivian Thomas is one of my hero's. I have had 2ablations for electrical heart issues and have gone through 5 implanted defibrillators and a massive stroke. I have been shocked close to100 times
I've just seen the documentary about Dr. Thomas and it was very inspiring. At the same time I felt sadness and anger about the lack of acknowledgement of Dr. Thomas and the contributions he made. I was angry because of the history of discrimination in this country and the persecution that has lasted far too long.
Though it worked out well for Dr. Thomas ultimately, he didn't see that coming, and endured heartbreak and heartache watching other take the bows, receive accolades while he was shuffled to the side by society. I believe in God, and that God is good; and I loathe the experiential horror that humans prepare for and force others human beings to go.
WHen I was young, I never thought it would happen to me; never. Black and female, something my mother warned me others saw as "double cursed", it took me a long time to get to graduate school, but get there I did. My advisor, who was also head of the department at the small seminary I attended, as well as its dean did not agree with my chosen trajectory of study, and opposed me every step of the way. I did not know until this moment that there was a triple curse of sorts: Black, female, and Christian.
Hard work, and a spirit of kindness and generosity, would win the day, of this I was sure for that's the American way, and surely my society taught me well that hard work pays off. I finished every class but never graduated because that PhD with a heart filled with vile indignation at me, never made a way for me. He did for the blonde, blue eyed, male who was counterpart to me (we the only two pursuing that specialization/ degree that year).
Nearly twenty years have passed.
God who I was sure was with me those two years of study did not at that time ever show up with the manifestation of favor and grace I completely believed God would do. He hasn't shown up since, not in that capacity with that blessing. I am a byword to my family. And did I make it clear that this was in the 2000s? I never thought that in my day and age I would have to experience back of the bus discrimination like Vivien Thomas did. I hope to have a chapter two to my story, with a better ending. Have I mentioned that 18 years have passed?
I just watched the movie about Vivien Thomas. It's not a dry documentary. It's full of insights into his personal life. Like how he came to be given what is traditionally a girls name. A great movie extremely well written and acted. I'm a 61 year old white male and I was choked up and tearing up at times, the story and the acting was so well done. The tension build up when they were doing the first heart surgery is a great example. You know it turned out fine because you know what the story is about. But I found myself leaning toward my computer screen watching so intently and so nervous. Definitely a new favorite movie of mine.

It really was a beautifully, well-written movie. I felt like my heart stopped watching the first surgery to correct TOF. Very bold for them to perform it in those days. The movie is called Something the Lord Made.

Dr. Vivian Thomas afforded a Doctors of Laws. Segregation, much discrimination kept him out. This should make everyone sad. My late husband an Ophthalmologist also had barriers in the early 70's not many Black's in the field. We can do better and never allow this to happen again. Many are benefiting from his work. Black and White, give honor where it's due.
It's still the same, medicine is just as divisive as everything is in America. As a person in the medical field I know that black people are not treated the same
