@@Classicbasketballdvds The Spurs earned it. With the Bulls dismantled, Jazz was arguably the standard. Jazz dominated early in the season including drubbing the Spurs who had a shaky 6-8 start. It's been said the next loss would mean firing Pop (Doc Rivers reportedly waiting) and/or trading David Robinson. Avery Johnson and new recruit Mario Elie (who infused invaluable toughness, experience, and nastiness) talked then rallied the team to beat Houston (media's preseason favorites) in convincing fashion. And as the Spurs gaining momentum and then-habitual finishing the season strong, the team find themselves clinching the top record by beating Utah in two critical games which, looking back, tilted the West powers to SA. The Spurs overcome their perennial tormentor in the 1990s. Since 1999, then 5 Larrys later, the Spurs didn't look back (even they're in rebuilding mode these past few years). And pardon the litany.
Little did we know that this is somewhat the start of the "passing of the torch" between two no-animosity competitors to cap the 1990s. Come 1999, the West has caught up with Utah (Portland and San Antonio in particular; Sacramento almost pulled an upset) while the Spurs leveled up to unprecedented heights after a shaky 6-8 start.
THIS is who I thought the following yrs Western conference finals woulda ben......not the damn blazers . That was the blazers BEFORE they got pippen too .....smdh

well said. I thought Utah would win it all in 99, but the Spurs were on one that year in the playoffs@@OrionOodama
Everyone expected them to meet in the 99 WCF. Too bad it never happened

This games are great late 90's into the 2000 Shyt ,🥡🍷

The Spurs probably would've gotten their revenge on the Jazz had they met for a rematch in the 1999 WCF.
Yep the Spurs were just head and shoulders above every other team that year
A series I really wish we had. Would not have been a sweep IMO.
@@KarlMalowned32 Utah couldn't have done any worse than Portland did in the 1999 WCF.
