Knicks fans gave him proper respect. He was the star of the team for a decade and a half. The organization gave him the unceremonious exit, not the fans
That's not true....I'm still raving about Patrick Ewing....20plus yrs after he retired. I love yankees knicks and Giants....and Patrick Ewing is not only my all time fave nba player....he's my fave player outta all the sports combined. ....ahead of Don Mattingly and LT.
Ewing my favorite player of all time that's them other Knick fans who don't have him as their favorite player all time . Crazy thing is after his first two years when injuries hit him knick fans was turning on him because they expected a championship right out the gates thinking it was gonna be like Georgetown when that wasn't realistic. Two the Knicks dealt with coaching changes too much and team presidents coming and going especially with al bianci before Dave checketts took over. Realistically Ewing actually overstayed his welcome with a team that didn't really put a great roster around him until after his prime years. And the one guy they should have resigned but Ewing told him to go get his money was Xavier McDaniel because Ewing knew how newyork do . After he had that talk with Pat Riley he should have left anyway . Like he said he almost became a Golden State warrior because of sleepy Floyd his Hoya teammate. Imagine Ewing flying around the ball in the bay with run tmc which don nelson was trying to do with New York but the personnel was built differently. Which is why his system didn't mesh well but had Ewing left for golden state and or phoenix cause Phoenix was on the table after his unrestricted free agency his career could have been even that much better . But his loyalty and those of us who loved him always respected him
