There isnt a profesional athlete left in the world right now (in any sport) that would have done what Ewing did. He played a full game on two injured knees and an injured achilies. Unreal...
An injured Ewing outplayed Alonzo Mourning the whole series. What a warrior he was in 99. Every Knicks fan was heartbroken when he got hurt in the ECF. I don't think the Knicks would have beat the Spurs with him, but it would have been more than a five game series. Jordan's beneficial officiating kept four of the greatest players ever from winning a championship. (Ewing, Stockton, Malone and Barkley)
Would've been great to at least see the Knicks play the Spurs with Ewing. Of course when you're talking Duncan and Robinson, Ewing woul'dve made a huge difference. I just remember LJ D'ing up Duncan. That was a tough match up. Another regret, especially after watching the Last Dance. The 96' squad was the best Knicks team of that era, had the tough D still, with the offensive fire power... unfortunately derailed by the Miami coming off the bench fight.
@@just.do.something Also, LJ hurt his knee in game 7 against Indiana and was not at all himself in the finals. He probably shouldn't have been playing. I think the Knicks still lose to the Spurs with a healthy Ewing and LJ, but in a 6 or 7 game series, not a 5 game roll over.
@@stormcrow7878 Good points. Also, LJ's back wasn't 100%. The series was pretty tight even though it was 5 games. Maybe Knicks still lose in 6/7, but too bad we weren't able to see what happened. End of Ewing's career was unfortunate. 96, lost year due to coach change. 97 (Most talented Knicks team IMO) Miami Fight, 98 broken wrist, 99 injured b4 NBA Finals, offseason traded...the trade that began a two decades of embarrassing basketball.
I tried watching it when Jordan was with the Wizards and that was the last time I tried getting back into it. To think this was when Jordan retired the second time and after his last full season in Chicago and the Bulls won their 6th title the year prior in 98.
Same here. I never missed a knicks game and remember watching the west coast games in the playoffs just because they were do good. Been about 20 years since I watched.
You can clearly see that Majerle fouled Houston on the head on that last shot, but in those days there was no way the refs were gonna called a foul. Great memories, thanks for the upload!
Yes, he gave Houston's smooth head a little massage. But it wasn't hard contact and I think maybe that's why it wasn't called. But I could certainly see how that bristle of his head could still affect the shot, that's your equilibrium right there, but Allan found a way to make it go in even if it wasn't the most conventional shot.
What makes Knicks and Heat rivalry so intense was because of the familiarity. Both of these teams ran the same sets, defensive calls, and slow tempo game.
Pat Riley former Knicks coach to the Heat. He took Stan Van Gundy, Jeff' brother. Alonzo Mourning and LJ bad blood. Gave them lots of reasons and fuel to hate each other
This was during my senior year of high school. I remember this like it was yesterday. Even though San Antonio won their first title against my Knicks on my graduation night on June 25, 1999, I was proud we went this far and were never even suppose to be anywhere near the Finals. The first and only 8th seed to make it all the way to the Finals. Sadly, we have NOT been the same since. Especially with James Dolan in power. I miss these days! The NBA and defense and foul calling by referees now are a JOKE! Littlest thing and you get a foul called.
from 1993 through 2000 the knicks faced the heat and hornets in a combined 32 playoff games 23 were played by patrick ewing and 28 were played by alonzo mourning
23 playoff games were played when alonzo mourning faced patrick ewing the knicks beat the hornets 4-1 in the 1993 semi finals the heat beat the knicks 4-3 in the 1997 semi finals with a suspension in game 6 for patrick ewing the knicks won 3-2 in this series and 4-3 in the 2000 semi finals
I came back to look at this because I remember this as maybe the most tense, sphincter-tightening basketball broadcast I have ever watched. Just looking at the last two minutes of play, between the ominous tone of the announcers and the crowd noise of the Heat fans, this just felt so much bigger than a first round series has any right to feel. It felt to me like playing in Miami Arena against this Heat team that played them so evenly, against their former coach, a younger, stronger counterpart to Ewing, a dangerous trash talking point guard who could make a shot from anywhere on the court at any time, and a 2-guard in Majerle who could do likewise, with the black and red court aesthetics and the hoop flame at half court, it's like the Knicks were trying to win in a boiling cauldron. Or Hell.
I miss the team of Bill Walton, Steve Jones, and Tom Hammond. They were so entertaining, calling games. Walton:"It's not how many shots you make. It's how many you take." Hammond:'You and Allen Iverson would get along real well." lmao
This is such a great game, much appreciated on the upload. I remember watching this live on NBC. I was pulling for the Knicks, even though I've lived in Chicago my whole life, so when that shot by Allan Houston fell I was genuinely excited for the Knicks. I thought maybe that year Ewing could finally claim the title that eluded him, but it wasn't meant to be and like so many other great athletes he was denied by injury. The Spurs may have/probably would have still won, but I believe there would have been a game 7 where anything could happen... If I remember correctly, wasn't this the year of a lock-out shortened season? (Chicago Bulls tie-in) At the 40:50 mark, during a time out I see a young Tom Thibodeau.
the knicks played the bulls led by legend michael jordan really WELL in the 1992 semi finals and 1993 conference finals and the knicks were elite in the 1993 and 1994 playoffs being led by the prime version of superstar patrick ewing
I was 17 and remember watching this live, I miss these types of physical rivalry nba has changed I don't know for the better. Def more action and the games geared towards the offense now and shooters, the hard gritty defensive teams of the 90s are gone fore good.
Glad players played through the pain back in the 90s. They were real men. Patrick Ewing playing through the pain in that decisive Game 5 with the Knicks winning beating the Heat 3-2 in the Quarterfinals, that shows a lot of heart and a lot of grit, and a lot of guts, blood, sweat, and tears.
Raymond Bermea At this point on his career pain was a daily thing! But he persevered now you got players sitting out just cause their hand is itching! I'm glad I grew up watching 90s and early 2000s basketball!
I know these Knick’s teams didn’t get to win any championships but just winning very strongly physical and contested games against those Heat teams were close enough. Ewing and Co. made being a fan back then worthwhile.
Great Upload!!! Man I Remember This Series Like It Was Yesterday......If I Remember Correctly This #8 Seed NY Knick Team Was The First #8 Seed To Ever Make The NBA Finals!
They just ran out of gas in the Finals with Ewing out for the rest of the season. It was a heartbreak to see the Knicks made it that far and lost to the Spurs

Yep, before the NBA was ruined by rule changes, commercials covering the entire screen, focus on strategies during timeouts and so forth. Game flow was great and it actually had commentators telling a story that went along with the game.
Patrick Ewing was a beast. Barley could walk or breath and still was able to have a huge game. Tim Hardaway despite having a horrible game and playing on one foot was still giving his all out on the court.
At this time in 1999 it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the Knicks were going to fire Van Gundy and hire Phil Jackson once the season was over - but the Knicks' unlikely run to the Finals made it bad PR to get rid of Van Gundy and Jackson went to the Lakers instead. History-changing bounce on that Allan Houston shot.
walterlv01 he was not going to the Knicks. Plus when have the dysfunctional Knicks ever cared about bad PR? You really think New Yorkers and/or Knicks fans would care about firing Van Gundy in order to hire a then 6 time champion and former Knick player?
He thought there was no way Porter could have dribbled and gotten a shot off with 0.8 left. he actually had some hilarious commentary in the post-game conference... "only in Miami."
What's crazy is that last shot should've been an And 1 Thunder Dan fouled Allan Houston by inadvertently smacking him upside the head as he released the ball
Hindsight 20/20 in 2020 is that Patrick should have finished his career as a Knick, Marcus Camby was a future DPOY and it was the right move to acquire him but Ewing should have stayed as a locker room leader same with LJ. If they would've managed to keep this core together they might have stayed relevant for a couple more years adding younger talent. It always baffles me how NBA teams always overlook leadership
Safe to say that Allan Houston here made the shot of his life and in the other hand I think Pat Riley only kept Tim Hardaway on the game out of loyalty to one of his star players. Pat should have gone in the 4th with Porter at the one and Lenard at the two and I'm sure he knew it, Tim had his morale down because of how bad he played in this half.
Sadly that was Riley tendency during huge Playoff games. Remember in Game 7 of the 1994 NBA Finals, Riley left John Starks on the floor despite shooting horribly and could have used reserves like Hubert Davis or Rolando Blackman. He stayed loyal with his starters to a fault and it cost him badly.

Like usual, the refs have influence on all calls and decisions in a game. Deep down the NBA wanted the Heat to win that game.
