This was the third Tornado Warning Knox County Recieved on that dreadful March 2nd, 2012. However, only one actual Tornado was in our area. This was recorded on a Panasonic HDC-TM80 1080i - 60 FPS Camera. See the remake for maximum quality.

These emergency messages always scared the crap out of me
exactly!
is it the sound or the message itself?
+Itz Topaz The sound is disturbing to the human ear so that you can hear it in crowded or loud areas or far away from the source of the alert tone.
Itz Topaz Both lol. The sound and the guys voice is creepy

For everyone saying that the tornado warning scares them, that’s the point. They designed the sound to trigger your fight or flight response.
Question is, what if it triggers fight?
@@jotaroagainstpedos9948 you start running outside to throw hands with the tornado
@@user-mq6ve2mi1f CMON, TORNADO, YOU CAN'T GET ME!
Actually the three beeps are encoding signals to send information to certain TV’s. The long beep afterwards is the attention signal to get your attention. But we hear all 4.
We know
Hearing this while home alone is absolutely chilling, the feeling is something you won’t understand till you experience it. Your heart will start beating uncontrollably, you’ll feel as if someone dumped ice water on you, along with cold sweats and your stomach will hurt a lot
Feels like Siren head is on your chest whilst being behind you
I remember hearing this in the truck
And if ur home alone at night.
This is actually very accurate! But what does "The feeling is something you won't understand till you experience it." mean?
It happens to me regardless if im home alone or with a group of people
Fun fact! This sound is meant to be creepy and or scary, because when there’s a real emergency, you want people to listen to it, and these themes of alarms can catch people’s attention easily. So it’s not your fault if you are scared by this noise.
Exactly, because who hears a siren that says: hello sorry to bother you BUT THERE IS A TORNADO HEADING RIGHT FOR YOU
I once was trying to sleep when my phone played this alert but for my location. I almost had a heart attack cause it was nighttime. The tornado destroyed over half of the city.

Me too. Was designed to be that way. They wanted something that sounded so unnatural to the ear that it would instantly become associated in the mind with bad shit happening.
***** I'm aware of the EAS data squawk. I'm referring specifically to the 853 and 960 tone that was created for EBS and later continued in EAS. That tone combination was invented by Bell Labs, I believe, and intended to be horrible sounding. Just sit through some of it and tell me it's not irritating.

It is called a SAME Header and an Attention Signal. NOT A BEEP.
@Harpoon, those beeps are actually called SAME Headers, which contain information about the warning, at which time it was issued and when it expires, and the locations that received it.

This is false. Tornados make terrifying noises.
The sound from this has always sent me into a panic attack. The worst part is, there have been 4 different instances where it was late at night and I was watching TV and this started to play. It was really late, I was in the dark, by myself and laughing at something on TV. All of a sudden, what I was watching was shut off and this shows up. So, I’m basically left alone, in the dark, with this dark screen and this tone playing. Makes my heart feel like it’s gonna explode...
I've always felt safe by this and it helps me sleep a lot. When I was a kid I was very scared of severe storms and this always gave me a warning so I could get prepared and safe, I know it's weird but it calms me

I live in southwest IL. Big storm & tormado action area. I am a HUGE storm junky.. (used to fall asleep to TWC as a kid in the 90s.) ...but this here will always give me chills.. One night few years ago, I had a dream I was in my old house. It felt like noon, in early May maybe ? .. I was coming out of my room. The windows were open all over the house, but it was quiet outside.. Quiet inside.. Just the warm late-spring wind blowing through the house.. with that strong eerie tornadic energy you can just feel. Only in the living room was it dark.. The blinds were drawn.. there was this depressing feeling..& THIS was blaring on the tv.
A tornado was coming.. & my mom was just there, lying on the couch facing away from me. I had this overwhelming feeling of impending doom. Like ... "wake up , mom! There's a tornado coming Wtf are you doing !" But I couldn't talk.
I woke up from that creepy dream to a relief .. a sunny morning
.. & Said wouldn't it be some sh#* if a tornado hit later ? ....... well it really did. When I was home alone... & My poor mom died unexpectedly shortly after.. due to unrelated causes..
This sound has a *+ dark & evil *+ aura about it.... tapped into my third eye or some sht..

I haven't had cable television since 2018. It's all streaming now. But by God. This is a core memory for me. As someone who studied Atmospheric Sciences, I always thought about those times in the Midwest when we had tornado warnings. My goal is to eventually join a storm chaser team because the science behind it is so fascinating and I want to help learn how to predict these nasty storms earlier.
Who else gets sever anxiety when hearing these warnings
Honestly, I've never experienced a Tornado but we had a horrible storm and this played on the radio at full blast. I got so scared that even now, if I hear a bit of this or an Amber alert, I start to cry.

This storm was wild. I remember hiding in the bathroom because the winds were audibly damaging our roof. It got really quiet, so I opened the door and went to the living room, and looked out our second story window. It was nighttime, but it looked light outside somehow. I thought it was strange how the tree was covering the window more than usual..... but it wasn't the tree. The sky itself was green. We were shocked when enormously loud cracks rang out. It sounded like gunfire, but it was hail suddenly pelting the windows and roof, and the wind was back! It was apocalyptic. It didn't feel real, and we didn't even experience the worst of it. The storm left us with severe roof damage, broken windows, and a carpet of hailstones 3 inches thick.
this is why we need more tornado bunkers built into our homes
I thought this was real for a sec because it said my neighborhood I’m so dumb.

The first sound. So fricking scary. Jeez.
As a Japanese, this actually scared me. Our warning sounds fairly weak (tbh) but this-
(japanese passed out while holding phone)
@IJN Yamato yeah we do. It's just small ones that don't trigger alarms, either waterspouts or dust devils but that's what it ends to. But if it reaches a tornado level strength then heck.
And I survived the typhoon Hagibis so,
Yeet my life if another disaster comes.
@IJN Yamato Around October or so. I wasn't really scared since it was normal for me to suffer storms and calamities ever since I came here to study from the Philippines. And that country of mine suffers about 20 tropical cyclones every year. And Japan, here, earthquakes are a norm for us
@IJN Yamato and I did run around the street, while it was raining
we are programmed as children to know this sound. they play tests of the alert during childrens programs and radio shows. it grabs your attention very fast!
It's a good thing they have tones, with no tones, people would not hear the eas
Plus, the tones automatically turn on weather radios.

was it a tornado warning or somthing else?
IJN Yamato i guess but its more like the volume or mogz voice
Ahh, this is in my neck of the woods. I remember that day clearly. I used to be really frightened by the SAME header/alert tone, but learning about how they work and how they are actually a message to different broadcasts made them less mystical to me and more neat rather than frightening. Though of course I won’t let my guard down upon hearing it go off. (:
As an aspiring Storm Chaser, I LOVE hearing this sound 😂

Recently there was a tornado warning in my area and the emergency alert looked exactly like this. The thing that really spooked me was the low quality of the voice recording... It was pretty terrifying.
The first time I heard this warning I lived in Florida and there was a tornado near my house and my mom and I were alone so we had to hide in the laundry room. It was so scary... (⋟﹏⋞)
Only the first alert tone when the EAS is doing their weekly/monthly test at 3 in the morning when I'm trying to sleep
Near instant stomach-drop feeling for sure. Severe weather is one of my interests and the atmosphere leading up to them gets me excited in ways. Tornadoes especially--theyre fascinating to study and look at and chase but when you get a warning for your area, oh boy does your stomach drop in fear.
These alerts always give me chills
I live in the Knoxville area (Rockford to be exact) and I remember this coming on the air in my home late at night. I looked out of the window in my living room and noticed a bunch of leaves flying in the air. It must have been the high winds blowing them. Me and my family usually sit at the entrance of the spare room (which is now my 3 year old niece's room) we have in our house and wait for an all clear message. It was a pretty scary moment for us, but we got through it!
you must of been a scared girl
we don’t have a basement so we hid in the bathroom, i remember we had to remodel our house exterior because of the hail
Good thing New England doesn't get tornadoes. **chuckles nervously**
ConnorM No, tornados are somewhat common in New England. Especially in western Massachusetts and in Connecticut. Maine and Rhode Island tornadoes are rare, and Vermont and New Hampshire sometimes get tornadoes. But tornadoes are more common in mainland areas where they are flat and have no hills or mountains.
IJN Yamato Not England, New England. Also, tornadoes can happen just about anywhere on Earth. Heck, even some tornadoes can be found on other planets in the solar system.

When I was younger than 9 years old, and this came up on our tv, I used to think the world was ending 😂
This is the sound I put on my alarm clock
i know this sounds weird, but i think they chose those specific notes and beeps to bring the human body be alerted like for example, those tones and beats that set off a warning system in a persons brain. They did it on purpose so that when we'd hear the tones our brain would detect there's danger which is probably why this apparently traumatized a lot of people because at such a young age the loud ringing and fear of danger was so sudden.

cringy...
Here to explain what the sound _actually_ does:
The 3 beeps at the beginning are SAME codes. Those get picked up by an EAS decoder, which decodes the 3 beeps.
The long beep is the attention tone, which is the one that is supposed to get your attention. It’s a mix of an 853 hz tone and a 960 hz tone.
The last 3 beeps tell the decoder that it’s the end of the signal. When ran through a decoder, they show “NNNN,” which tells it to end the broadcast.
The civil authorities in your area have reported that the bodies from the dead are rising from their graves and attacking the living
for everyone saying this scares them that's the point. Its to trigger your fight or flight. Remember during a tornado were 2 minutes is the life or death decider every second counts.
It gives me shivers when I listen to this sound after an emergency last month when there was a tornado alert, high-speed winds, flash floods and intense rain on the area, and I had listen to this sound for more than four hours while I was drenched at the airport.
The noise actually brings me excitement because I always wanted to see a tornado
You're up early in the morning as a little kid, watching your favorite PBS kids show, eating some breakfast...the sun hasn't quite come up yet so it's still dark and kinda chilly in the house except the glow of the tv, but you're reassured by the familiar sounds of sesame street or dragontales or zaboomafoo or whatever you liked to watch. you're nice and safe. all's right with the world.
then the audio just abruptly stops and this happens....

The people who designed this are geniuses. Theres no possible way you can ignore this. Your ears go right towards it
This gave me a great excuse to leave work today
The robotic voice makes it sound even scarier.
If you're wondering why t sounds so scary, it's because the beeps are designed to make the human brain go into a fight or flight mode, which is what you need during an emergency
The beeping sound and err sound isn't actually to trigger people's fight or flight response. During an EAS in a tornado warning, they want you to keep calm so you can gather your stuff and get in a shelter. So, what I was talking about. The beeping sound and err is actually the EAS transmitting.
These always scare me. In my county it’s just the beginning and then a recorded talk. The sound is very unsettling to me. Sometimes they will do test/drills. They do them at 2 in the morning usually. They used to scare me soooo bad and wake me up. Now I pull all nighters all the time and it gives me anxiety. I hate it. Lol

I’m so used to tornado warnings with no twister that I just listen to it and wait until the power go out.
I was watching TV and it went static and something like this came on. I looked outside and saw a freaking tornado forming in the clouds above an empty lot across the street. I looked farthing and I saw a tornado that already formed coming twards me. Thank the Lord, because the tornado the tornado that was forming by my house never touched ground, and the other tornado stayed in one place for the most part and was only an F1. No one was hurt. THANK YOU GOD!
Only ever heard this once during the day. I don't know why Tornado warnings always seem to come in the middle of the night, wind howling, hail hitting the roof, lightning constantly lighting up the outside for a split second. Hearing this on the upstairs TV on full blast hiding in the basement has never left me.

when you're happy you enjoy the music, when you're sad you understand the lyrics 😔😔
It takes 30 seconds to get to the actual warning. When there are tornadoes brewing, every second counts. They need to shorten the beginning.
The answer to why this sound scares you. : It scares you to let you know there is a tornado coming nearby. And you need to prepare for it.
Whenever I heard these I started crying saying “I don’t wanna die” but we rarely have tornados here
these messages made me CRY.. like im literally crying rn at the sound
