This song and Peter Gabriel’s Biko
Opened our eyes and made us aware
They both had a huge impact on the downfall of apartheid

This is my favorite of the videos made by musicians for a cause in the 80s.

This is one of the most powerful, and diverse protest songs -ever!
This song, and "Free Nelson Mandela" by the Special AKA informed me to be aware of Apartheid. I was a teen in the 80's. When I was in college, and Nelson Mandela was let out of prison after near 30 year, many of my fellows at college had no clue about what was there.
Steve van Sandt, the guy in the bandana, leading some of the groups, had been in Bruce Springsteen's band for years - he organized this protest (filmed in LA and NYC) -such a range a talent to say "No!"

Very powerful song with a cast of many. Steve Van Zandt is so young here, mind you they all are.. Great choice Lance and Harri.

100% correct Harri. I agree with your rant 100%. I remember when Steven Van Zandt recorded this and brought it to the world, and I'm so thankful he did.

My favorite "protest" sind of the 80's. What a great cause, and such a great song! Thanks for the reaction!

Thanks Harri you gotta get political for a very political video. Great reaction 👍 That was Lou Reed in the sunglasses.

Being against apartheid, racism or any other sort of discrimination and oppression should not be political, but pure humanity.

    Gotta love the Scots.
"Previously called St Georges Place, in the 80's, Glasgow City Council decided to rename this to honour Nelson Mandela, who was then imprisoned in South Africa. This was the council sticking 2 fingers up at the, then, apartheid regime, because this was where the South African embassy was situated."
This way, any time South Africa mailed anything to that embassy, they had to address it "Nelson Mandela Place".

Remember watching a documentary about the Sun City recording. Michael Monroe (Hanoi Rocks) and Stiv Bators (Dead Boys/Lord Of The New Church) said that they were the girls choir 🤣.

Steve Van Zandt said he took plenty of heat and was essentially a pariah for a number of years by taking that stand. Of course, he was the one who was proved right.

No worries, Harri. Apartheid is a subject that's worth ranting about. Dynamite video. Explosive. Makes "We Are the World" anemic by comparison.

This song and Biko opened up many eyes to the atrocities committed by the White controlled South African government. A country that was 95% Black, where the majority of the people could not speak up and out about the atrocities. And Paul Simon said what you said: artists who became aware had no business making money from those corrupt soulless souls, especially when the government was doing its best to keep most people, in that country down.
