Great pick. A forgotten but important anti-apartheid protest song put together by Little Steven of the E Street Band in 1985. Sun City was a luxury resort in apartheid South Africa where huge acts like Queen & Elton John played. Steven rallied musicians to boycott "playing Sun City" and helped generate some international attention toward ending apartheid, which was not a mainstream priority for the US and UK.

Omg JJ!!! How did you come across this gem? I remember when this first came out back in 1985; and you're exactly right: Sun City was song by various artists united against apartheid!!! I still like this song!!! and that was the late Clarence Clemons on sax and the apartheid regime ended in 1994!!! Great song and Great reaction!! Go head on JJ!!!

It was very effective with college students. We protested and got many universities to divest from South Africa. The Winans did an anti-apartheid song called Let My People Go.

JJ...great thoughtful question you asked. The song was effective as a protest. More effective in Europe where it was played everywhere but not as effective in the US because many of the larger radio networks wouldn't play it due to the lyrics directly criticizing then POTUS Reagan by name on his weak stance on Apartheid. Sun City was the entertainment mecca/resort in South Africa during Apartheid where music acts from around the world did shows. Those huge name artists especially worldwide respected Bono of U2 protesting Apartheid by refusing to do any shows at Sun City brought a ton of awareness. The song in 1985 was one of many things that lead to about 5 years later Apartheid ending.

Another great “all-star collaboration” from the 80s. As many others have noted, this song was very helpful in bringing mainstream attention to the atrocious practice of apartheid in South Africa…which was eventually abolished a relatively few years after this song hit. Unlike the vast majority of the other popular “collaborations for a cause” from the era, this song was part of an entire album project…not just a single song. There are other interesting songs including:
“LET ME SEE YOUR I.D.”, “NO MORE APARTHEID” and “SOWETO NIGHTS”.
Also, you may want to check similar collaboration songs including:
“KING DREAM CHORUS & THE HOLIDAY CREW - KING HOLIDAY”
“THE POINTS” and both the R&B and Rap versions (two different songs) of “FREEDOM” from the PANTHER soundtrack

Sun City is a resort area, like Las Vegas or Atlantic City, so it has several hotels, maybe 4, which usually all have casinos. That’s just part of the attraction of resorts. The recording was iconic for the eclectic collection of artists representing so many genres including jazz, rap, Latino & African music, representing a 40 year span. Every act of protest publicly by public figures, especially entertainers, is effective, as it contributes to world wide attention, which becomes pressure on the source responsible for the oppression or abuse of people. This mounted to the declarations already made by the United Nations, that artist should boycott. Mandela was released & touring America like 4 yrs later. Independence was 1994. I was blessed to participate in once of several concerts commentating 20 yrs independence in 2014 in New York, combining South African artists & famous American guest.

It was very effective. All the artists who were involved in this project vowed not to do any performances in Sun City. Sun City was a huge industry for South Africa. It broughtunheard of monies when American popular musicians played at the Sun City resort. It was a significant chunk of South Africa's economy. Read up anout this project Maestro . Proves that when you hit especially the rich in the pocket just how compliant they can be. I think after a year or so of protests of many apartheid was no more.

  • @MichaelBurhans

It was very effective. Sun City was one of the few things keeping the Apartheid government afloat economically. They paid well and in gold. Every act wanted to play there. After this project, it became career suicide to play there. Combined with the Diverstisure movement rising at the same time. (People forcing trust funds, and major stock sales related to South Africa. Between the two it economically strangled the regime until they gave in.

Sun City was a resort town in South Africa that many American artists would perform in. It was a protest song and a boycott against the Apartheid government. It was one of many things to put pressure on the South African government to end Apartheid, and to increase awareness of what was happening. It was a big deal, because as Americans were starting to see the images, and learning more about how Apartheid was practiced, it turned people against it. No, it didn't end overnight, but it was this kind of awareness and stance, along with many other steps taken over time that finally took it down. Uprooting an entrenched government takes a lot of time and effort.

That was a powerful song and it made people think before they performed there. I think it was a ritzy place that didn't allow Blacks to stay there or something like that. I think they said the song got them (Sun City) to change their policy after a lot of A list entertainers refused to play there.

great video i just found out about your channel while looking for this song, its one of my favorite songs, some useful info, yes it did have an effect on bringing down south africa's brutal government, nelson mandela himself even thanked the people involved and saying it made a difference. it has been performed many times live for many years at many concerts some that are available online, later versions had many artists join them onstage who were not all involved in the 1985 version, such as tom morello from rage against the machine and others.

Yeah, it was very effective. Sun City was just an example of displacing blacks into townships so white developers could steal their land.
I don't know if you knew all the faces but it was all heavyweights. Artists of every vibe, jazz, rap, R&B, soul, rock, punk, folk, metal are all here. They put it in everyone face. Ending Apartheid was now a priority in the public conscious. Corporations started to boycott. South Africa became a pariah whereas before it was set aside, basically ignored. This changed that. Apartheid would end, Mandela would be freed and SA would finally give rights to all.

great channel, i'm subscribing and i cover stuff like this on my channel if you ever want more information about this or other similar songs let me know. another fun fact is that many of the artists in this video are from worldwide such as north and south america, africa, australia and across europe. and the song was considered hard to classify, some stations said it was rap, others said it was heavy metal, or new wave, etc etc, because there were so many different type of artists used. i think thats cool that it was not able to be classified. and many of the artists were listed as criminals and were spied on because of their connections to this songs and at that time Nelson Mandela and the ANC were listed as a criminal organization. i was only 7 years old when this came out and dont remember much from then but i rediscovered the song in the 1990s and loved it. i hope this was useful, good luck on your channel.
