  • In 1985, Steven Van Zandt, along with Arthur Baker, Hart Perry, and Danny Schechter, formed Artists United Against Apartheid and Van Zandt would write “Sun City,” an anthemic Rock/Hip Hop/R&B song protesting the Apartheid system symbolized by the South African resort, Sun City. Over 50 artists including Gil Scott-Heron, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Grandmaster Melle Mel, George Clinton, Run DMC, Jimmy Cliff, Ruben Blades, Pat Benatar, Herbie Hancock, Lou Reed, Joey Ramone, Peter Gabriel, Bob Geldof, Clarence Clemons, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Darlene Love, Bobby Womack, Afrika Bambaataa, Kurtis Blow, The Fat Boys, Jackson Browne, Peter Wolf, Bonnie Raitt, Hall & Oates, Big Youth, Michael Monroe, Stiv Bators, Peter Garrett, Ron Carter, Ray Barretto, Nona Hendryx, and Miles Davis, performed on the track which spawned a conscious raising album of the same name. As one of the first collaborations among major recording stars to support a political, rather than a social cause, it is considered by most political experts to be one of the the fatal blows to Apartheid, leading to Nelson Mandela being freed only a few years later.

Not only because we are capable of such great things but because in an instance like this the great thing we accomplished was in an attempt to rectify the horrible things we are also capable of. I do have to say that on a whole humanity does seem to be moving in a better direction than in the past...well, we've had some pretty damn big hiccups but at least humanity as a whole is attempting to move in the right direction.

It is. After this song came out, Reagan imposed sanctions on SA. The UN did shortly afterward. ONLY Laura Branigan performed at Sun City, that was in 1988 and her career never recovered. Apartheid finally ended when Nelson Mandela became President of a new multiethnic multiracial democratic South Africa on May 10, 1994. Meanwhile here in North America that same day, we were treated to an annular ('ring of fire') solar eclipse! I remember that day FONDLY. What a great day for all it was.

This was a time when people/artists were using their clout for social change. Bringing that social consciousness into the mainstream. Even though Queen played in SunCity they lent their voices to Live Aid. It's sad to see, and this is part of life, so many talented singers and musicians here who have since passed. We as a race, the human race, were making great strides towards understanding and respecting each other. It's also sad to see where we are today. The hate and hopelessness, the anger expressed. One thing was accomplished thanks to different factors involved apartheid was abolished. Even though the black majority there still lives in extreme poverty. Little Steven deserves credit for his part in this endeavor.

I'm absolutely thrilled to see the support of many musicians, like Steven, who were and are against the horrible apartheid, however...
We should Not forget about 1 truly great and amazing artist/musician of the late 60's and 70's who lived it, and who also was from South Africa...
The person whom I'm about to name and whom I'm sure most of you have not heard of, although he did flee to Detroit in 1968 down by the River District and sang in "The Brewery" pub, and who was not only a great musician, he was a great Afrikaan who was well ahead of his time with his musical lyrics, especially when it came to his own thoughts, or standing up for people's rights, or when it came to the disgusting apartheid!
This absolutely amazing musician/singer /song writer is named - RODRIGUEZ!!!
And, IF you could be so lucky to aquire 1 of Rodriguez's precious albums or singles, you will see what I mean about him being truly amazing!
A song in particular, from his "Cold Fact" 1970 album, was called "Anti Establishment Blues" and is just 1 of his greatest works, with lyrics that hold true to even now - 50+ years later where he was letting you know that it is ok to protest against your society, ok to be angry with your society...
Rodriguez's "Cold Fact" album gave people that Permission to Free Their Minds and to start Thinking Differently, especially towards the apartheid! The "Cold Fact" album was really like a whole slew of Revolution Anthems, giving people permission to just be Free, to say or do what was on their minds during hard times such as the disgusting apartheid...
Another great song is "Crucify Your Mind" 1970.
And another great album is "Coming From Reality" 1971 produced by Steve Rowland with 1 of his greatest songs ever, "Cause"... It'll bring tears to your eyes 😢.
Even though Rodriguez was recognized by a few great record producers and who tried really hard to get his music out there geographically, sadly, Rodriguez was not "truly recognized", until it was too late!
However, there are a few men/record producers who knew of Rodriguez well, from back in the late 60's and 70's.
One of those guys is Dennis Coffey, another is Mike Theodore, then Steve Rowland and then there's the "Sugar Man" aka Stephen Segerman, who all knew of Rodriguez and his music well.....
I just hope that you are truly lucky enough to get your hands on 1 of Rodriguez's albums or singles, bcuz you will Not be disappointed with either, the music and/or the lyrics, of Rodriguez!
If you like the music and lyrics of Bob Dylan, you'll absolutely LOVE the music and lyrics of Rodriguez!!
    Rest In Peace Rodriguez 🥰.

Yeah, last week Springsteen and Little Steven play the Mohegan Sun in Ct. The Mohegan Sun was built and owned by Sol Kerzner who built and owned Sun City. Now he has passed away but all these years later, they played a sister property. If you look into the bands that have played the Mohegan Sun when Kerzner owned it, some played on this song. They put money into the owner's pocket and their own without even knowing it. Perhaps some did.

Mr. Van Zant, two whole generations in South Africa don't know apartheid. Give it another three, and it will be an obscure footnote in history. While they still know discrimination, things take time. You, and all of the other artists who entertained me during my high school years helped end apartheid. A couple of years later, the Berlin wall fell. The Soviet Union fell and disintegrated into the autonomous republics that existed before the Russian empire absorbed them. The people of Poland finally breathed free air. People on Long Island stopped referring to people in New Jersey as mopes. The largest coalition of countries since the Korean war stopped aggression in the middle east. Yugoslavia became autonomous and then became independent republics. Hip hop went mainstream and R&B got the respect it deserved. Leather jackets became way cool again. But, most of all, if it was not the first breath of freedom, it gave freedom a sound. This song is a true anthem, an example of teamwork and the brotherhood of music. We need to work together, united and strong.

I like how Van Zandt didn't want to ask the Boss to be in it since he didn't want to take advantage of their friendship, but Danny Scheckter had no problem asking Springsteen. Of course he would do it since he is down to earth (This is is a guy who came to the "We Are The World" recording in a pick up truck parked across the street at a grocery store) and about social justice.

The problems of the past , are still causing problems now ..
It's not solely about colour .
    And here's why .
After apartheid ended and even later , Many south African (White police ) , left the country , to go to places like. Europe , New Zealand , and where I am , Australia ..
The thing is here , we have no upper age limit , for police recruitment , our agencies are desperate to reach quota , and many ex south African police , ex apartheid , are working in Australia , most in their 50's , and from what I've seen , although there's no excuse , they're damaged , and treat ANY , person here like CRAP ,
What have these ex saps officer's , done in their past ?
Where they fired ? ,Did they resign ? 🤔, Are background checks done ? , Does any advese information against them , still exist ? ..
The practice of re- employing in law enforcement and people who served in such a draconian and violent era needs to stop ..
I once asked an ex saps officer here ..
What did you treat people like over there ? ..
I hit a raw nerve as he drove off ! .🙂👍🤔👿☠️

    • @wylierichardson-tu6zs

'supremacist' means nothing, tho. Apartheid South Africa was a white supremacist state, which simply meant that the white 'afrikaans' minority got priveleges that the native black majority were mostly denied. Since Israel is essentially a Jewish state, it can't really be compared to old South Africa.
