I've been watching for a while now, but this has to be the most chaotic video I've ever seen. Like, even by Icy Mike standards. Like you were casting a chaos magic spell 12 minutes long.
Still super informative and practical video though! Thanks for the tips, coach. Recently started going back to training after years of health issues. Getting my jabs back in order is a good thing to focus on, and this will definitely help.
Diminuitive is a hard word! Good job nailing it.
"everybody wants a couple more inches" is crazy dawg ☠
"You're a Wizard, Mike!"
-Dumbledore, probably
in spear fighting my teacher taught me something he called Dog Attack. you show them your range and it is just short. Then you settle in but you are resetting your range by adjusting your feet. Keep the tip of the spear still so they don't know the ranging is different. Next attacks strikes cause it has more range. Wonder if the name comes from the same concept.
Loma sort of does both versions you show at the same time. He pushes off the back foot for max distance, but brings it in quickly enough that both feet land at the same time. Then to get back out, he does the same motion in reverse
Edit: it’s worth noting that this goes hand in hand with his little hopping phase-shift move. If he hops in with his foot on the outside, and his opponent fears the cross-that’s when he shoves his glove in their face so they can’t see while he does a little hopping pivot to their blindside.
Point being that he lands with both feet at once, so that cross comes out instantly. Which eventually sets up the flinch.
Putting here cuz lack of responses.
There’s a purpose for putting your chin to your shoulder on straight shots, and it has nothing to do with protecting your chin. Think about it for a moment. I have plenty of other real estate on your head besides your chin that I can KO you with. Protecting your chin does nothing in this instance.
The real reason why people are taught to touch the chin to the shoulder is to protect your shoulder. When you’re putting snap on a back hand, and your shoulder goes past your chin, you can throw out your shoulder. I’ve done it before and it hurts. So to protect your shoulder, and allow you to throw with more power, you touch the chin to the shoulder.
You can do it or don’t, it doesn’t always matter. I like doing it that way on crosses specifically.
@@BiggityBoggity8095 since this is an mma channel, I do want to point out that I’ve seen Adesanya defy certain death by turning a cross (with his chin tucked) into a sort of ‘shoulder roll with arm deflection’ to avoid an incoming headkick.
You are still vulnerable on the inside, however tucking the chin _does_ provide a lot of protection from shots on the outside. Fury vs Ngannou is a great example of how vulnerable not tucking the chin leaves you to the outside.
@@BiggityBoggity8095 it serves a lot of purposes but one of them absolutely is protecting you from getting concussed LMAO
The cartoon you're referring to is _Foghorn Leghorn_ he was a giant Rooster that constantly screwed with the dog. It was mine and my dad's favorite Looney Tunes cartoon. RIP pop
Dude came in to our gym with revgear gloves. I was like “you watch hard2hurt?” He was like “yeah how’d you know?” 😂
I fucking love this video. Not only that but I recall a slightly different take on the last bit of Chaos magic here from Mike. If I remember correctly he was sayin to do the exact same concept by jabbing almost in place but hiking up the back foot closer to the lead with each fake jab. I actually get a lotta use out of this technique and it’s opened up a world of possibilities for me, thanks Mike!
Was a video with Jared... that's a great spell
@@hard2hurt oh yeah
I like whenever he says that I've seen world champion fighters do that so it works.
It's so true bcz we care too much about text books and we forget to break the boundaries of it, change can't be done without breaking rules.
I have a saying. Wrong is determined by rate of success. Meaning if it works more than it fails it's not wrong just unorthodox
Red Magic technique: stepping forward, putting your rear foot in front of your lead foot, then taking a sipper long step foward allowing you to cross nearly half the ring with a single step to throw a super hard stick jab...It's supper slow and only works once, but it will catch em off gaurd.
Best advice I have ever gotten was from a boxing coach, he told me the range of your punches is dictated by your back foot. Didn't make sense at first, but than he showed me. He asked me to fully pop out my jab, with a front foot leap added. Of course, it's like a fencing jab nothing new. Than he asked, why can't you go further? Than I realized it's because I'd be off balance because my rear foot is too far back.
He taught me to disguise my approach with guard taunting (you know mixing up your stance a bit), but slide your back foot forward almost underneath you. Than you EXPLODE forward with a heavy jab, and I've rocked a lot of peoples shyt with that advice. You add like a whole foot of range without them realizing it. Mix that with other tips like Mike is saying and from your opponents perspective it feels like they are fighting Mr.Fantastic from the Fantastic 4.
This thumbnail is pure gold
I just learned yesterday how effective jabbing while stepping in with BOTH feet can be. Before, I was only stepping in with my lead leg, pushing off the back leg. Now I'm stepping with the back leg right after pushing off it. A game changer!
Awesome!
You made a brief mention of it in this video and I'm trying to figure it out for myself: would you mind doing a video some time about strategies for 'flat-footed' fighting? I've been trying to pick up the bouncy style of footwork that the instructors in both of my kickboxing schools so far have insisted on, and I'm not *awful* at it, but between my previous training (kung fu lol) and my general tendencies, I much prefer a more rooted way of moving. I'd love to hear your thoughts about how or if distance control changes when you're not as bouncy, for instance.
I switch between both a lot and from my point of view, if your technique is good, the only real difference between them is that bouncing helps mask the initials movements of your footwork, making it a bit easier to catch your opponent with your first attack, while being still helps you defend against low kicks and lower grapples (single and double leg takedowns, tackles, etc) as you can more easily regulate your stance (but if your technique is a bit lacking, you may find that one tipe of stance or the other might help mitigate or exacerbate your flaws, and usually the one that helps mitigate them are the bouncing stances).
Also I feel like is a bit easier to sell fakes and feint with your footwork on a still stance, as the movements are much more obvious to the opponent and therefore you won't need as big of a movement to sell it, but that's more of a feeling and I'm not sure enough that there is a noticeable difference yet, so take it with a grain of salt.
Putting here cuz lack of responses.

Just do grappling hahaha.
Nah i'm joking. Real answer incoming:
Just do Muay Thai lol (they are very flat footed and it work for them. Learn from them)
Well, classic Muay Thai uses a posture-based scoring system, or one that cares about perceived effect on the opponent. That, plus the regularity of their fights, makes the average Nak Muay prefer a more flat-footed style. It doesn’t necessarily make it the best application of footwork outside of that use case. Otherwise we wouldn't have foreign fighters with Dutch-style bases or more boxing-inspired footwork catching Thai fighters with the use of angles and their punching skills.
If a bouncy opponent is trying to pressure, then use your stability to make them respect your attacks. If the bouncy opponent is trying to dance around, to dart in and get out, use small steps to adjust to their angle changes and work on setups that counter their longest offensive plays (straight punches and any kicks).
Also, stable doesn’t have to be stationary, so you can include some explosiveness of your own to shock your way into infighting range and/or into the clinch. Make sure you avoid any obvious tells about when you’re advancing, like sinking your weight or cocking your hip or anything that means you’re not closing distance under some kind of cover.
Demetrious Johnson isn’t a bouncy fighter, but he uses front kick fakes to switch stance and close the distance with his knee as a threat and barrier. His clinch game is also exceptional, and that should also be a weapon against people who don't want to stay in the pocket.
Hope this helps!
More running, or jump rope. Or just make an effort to walk around heels up. Started doing that as a kid and now I have big calves and hoping and bouncing is almost 0 effort. Also weighted calf raises in the gym.
Mike really just said "Cast a debuff on 'em." I love this channel, man! Good shit! You helped me with a lot with my amateur fights and sparring because the gym I train is just vanilla braindead garbage, man lol.
What I learned most from this is that Mike won't tell us how many tips at the start because he can't count. However he has helped my jab
I KNEW you were secretly Dhalsim all along.

"3/4s of an inch is a big deal" thank you @hard2hurt, I needed to hear that today.
wait lowkey love how unhinged these videos are, in the best way... the way you describe things is so real and amusing, but at the same time it's such solid and clear advice that you don't get from just anyone xD
okay just finished the video, these are amazing techniques and well-thought out tips. most people stick to as you said very 'traditional' explanation and techniques, but you just add in so many extra details that help bring everything all together. allowing us to play with various options that feel best, or might work best depending on so many different scenarios. ty!
I was hoping you would say something about circling footwork. I always thought it was so cool how Ali would seem to get more distance at the expense of power with this circling footwork and just pock and touch up the other guy to make him chase all the while working the crowd and getting a rhythm for when he'd unleash his power lead straight to really do some damage
Damn, I was under the impression that this would be a tutorial on how to develop the powers of Dahlsim

Smashin' NDAs with an extended jab, GG. Thanks, Icy Mike!
Lol the thumbnail
This video reminds me of how similar boxing is to fencing. Especially on the points of using your jab to shake your opponent up psychologically, and on the dog chain technique. I have the dog chain technique fundamentally folded into my swordplay, personally, because I like to set people up for one fatal shot instead of trying to catch them with nicks and cuts. I fight permanently in a defensive position, with my right foot behind my left, which means that people get used to my range being short, and when I want to increase my range, I don't typically put my right foot forward, I just step my whole body forward, left leg still in front, and just play a range game with them until I think they're primed to make a mistake. Then I just STEP forward like a normal person, bringing my right foot forward and giving myself easily two or more feet of reach I didn't have the ENTIRE fight, and then get 'em.
The only time this thing DOESN'T work well in my experience is against a polearm, or maybe in boxing if your opponent has such a freakishly long reach that you cannot engage them without them popping you. If you're against someone like that, you gotta go aggro and just go for it, but if you can stay in range to fight your opponent and just stay defensive til it's time to capitalize, it works really well in my experience.
Monkey D. Mikey thumbnail is crazy. His anime is called TwoPiece, the. Name of the treasure at the end if the Grandline.
The RPG references are genuinely helpful and 100% on point. Would be cool to see some swordfighty stuff again. But in the Hard2Hurt style. Street swordfighting or something like that. Damned shame it's a niche audience for that.
The jab in the thumbnail reached my eyes alright
🤣 I love this channel.
I don't always agree with you 100%
But it's great. Informative, always gives more options to an already chaotic situation, and funny 💪
Good work.
you must channel your hamon to your shoulder, briefly dislocating it, increasing your reach. this technique has been lost to stand users.

MIKE! You missed the blackest magic trick in the book!!! Open your fingers INSIDE THE GLOVE! hit them with a Jeet Kun Do eye poke with a boxing glove on. This add 2ish inches to the end of your hand. This kind of goes along with the dog chain idea. I use this A LOT! One of my favorite strategies
a good fight where jab variations dominatedmany rounds was barrera v hamed
Pulling your rear shoulder back doesn’t have to expose your chin. Couldn’t you just leave your rear hand in place ,extend your arm, so it ends up on your nose, keeping face and body covered? Often see classic boxers even place their glove on the lead shoulder(clavicle) to parry counter jabs.
This prob be risky if kicks were involved without adjustments.

That thumbnail though 😂
When he fought Eddie Alvarez, Conor McGregor leaned a lot and it seemed to mess with alvarez's sense of range a lot and let Conor land some clean shots by surprise.
What he did was kind of a black magic thing. He leaned way forward but kind of pulled his hips back, then would throw punches and miss, so Alvarez thought he was safe, then conor would move his hips foreward and throw something and it would land.
Update: I just rewatched it. Conor uses the dog chain. Theres also a LOT of range manipulation tomfoolery in that fight.
