The Swedish carmaker launches its new "Recharge" badged SUV, but how does it drive in the real world?
NOTE: The copy and Value For Money score have been revised since the original publication of this review to reflect a recent change in specification. Volvo Car Australia has now added a panoramic sunroof and Harman Kardon audio system to the XC40 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid's standard specification. They were previously part of a $3000 option pack. Incidentally or not, CarAdvice's initial feedback to the company had suggested these features be standard to help close the price/value gap to the regular T5 R-Design.

Volvo UK. Should take note of this and do something similar

@@Smokey187um1 Should also be included with the T4 which at the moment comes in at just under the £40k threshold to escape the Govt's £325 annual VED surcharge on top of the £150 rate.

    Nice review.
The MY21 changes aren’t really changes here in the UK, they’re deletions:
    - Paddle shifters on R Design. REMOVED
    - Twin exit chrome exhausts. REMOVED
    - Embossing on leather seats. REMOVED
    - Embossing on C Pillar. REMOVED
    - Embossing on tread plates. REMOVED
    - Electric folding rear seats. REMOVED
    - Folding rear head rests. REMOVED
    - Close & Lock button on trunk. REMOVED
And now only ONE key delivered with every car. There is a servicing key (‘Care Key’) but that cannot be linked to driver profiles and no profiles can be called up from the infotainment screen.
Volvo have even deleted the stalwart ticket holder from the A Pillar!
The reason I know this? I’ve ordered an MY21!
First time I’ve ever known a manufacturer ‘update’ a car by removing items!
An interesting point! Volvo positioned the hood catch at the edge of the iron symbol. Just follow the line of the symbol and there it is! 😁

The story is the same in the US for every model. Less options, less features, more built-in restrictions. Even the Polestar Engineered chiclet has been reduced to mere text instead of the Polestar icon. I honestly have no idea what the heck Volvo is doing right now, but I'm not on board with this direction at all.

vomErsten, I totally agree. Very poor isn’t it?
I have since learnt that a couple of the deletions mentioned above are still on the Recharge but for all petrol and mild hybrid cars, they all look identical now except for wheels. There is the two tone paint, of course, but some markets have this on both the R Design and the Monentum.
It’s all very strange and to completely remove features that identify each model makes the base model look the most appealing. Surely that’s not what Volvo want? Very odd. 🤷🏻‍♂️

what about the noise the electrical motor creates?? when I tested it, it was quite loud but it was a pre-series car.

Nice. Volvo have made a comeback. So has Honda. They were both a bit dead there for a bit.

All sounds very good, with the Volvo XC40 Recharge T5 Plug-in Hybrid returning amazing fuel economy. I do wonder though just how much it actually costs to charge up at home, they say it takes about six hours to charge up from mains electricity at your home. This being the case I just wonder how much your electricity bills will increase ?.....Is it, for example, The equivalent, of leaving on a boiling kettle that’s consuming 3000 W for six hours, I would hope not.

In UK I calculated to be about £1, but cheaper to charge overnight using off peak rates

I got the S90, same issue with the brakes. Took me weeks to master and up to this day still get bad rap for my driving form my wife. I don't quite get it. bad design I think. The short range is a big issue. As an environment minded person you find yourself pugging the car to the charging point 100 times a week!

What is the point of an electric motor if it only does 40/47km? What is the advantages of having an electrical motor with a petrol engine?

    • @JP-nf9lk
      @JP-nf9lk 2 года назад +1

probably cheaper to run if you drive 40 kms or less on a daily basis. And if you have to go for a longer travel, you don't get the range anxiety like what they get when driving the full electric.

When are all journalists going to catch up with technology?! EV range is defined with no aux consumers but when they're testing the car they surely don't think about it and then complain the range is not accurate. Educate yourself!! Understand the new technology and how NEV actually works!!

The car is good design but only one, seen from the back is not attractive or ugly at all. Volvo should change the back lamp design.
