Fully Charged is an online show hosted by Robert Llewellyn (Red Dwarf, Scrapheap Challenge, Carpool), which looks at why we need to change how we think about energy consumption now. From looking behind the myths of renewable energy, to seeking the truth about electric cars, Robert Llewellyn demonstrates what the future could have in store for us all.

Fourteen years ago, this video was listed on RUclips. It's amazing how far we've come in this amount of time. I had an i-MiEV -- a 2012 model -- on lease for $0 down and $69 per month. It was brilliant as a go-to-work vehicle on city roads. Cheap, torquey off the line, but that's about it. But that's all it took to get me hooked on EVs. I'm driving a Kia Niro EV now, with 4X the battery of the i-MIEV and double the charging speed. The Kia is a much nicer car than the Mitsubishi to be certain, with things like space for 5 adults, a usable boot, and actual sound dampening... but the i-MiEV definitely had its charms.

      Um... you must mean 12 years? It's currently 2021! (Actually almost 2022... -> 13 years 😆)
... and the clock keeps ticking .... and any absolute number assigned to a relative value comparison attempting to quantity the difference between an arbitrary point against another variable point that is subjected to the inexorable passage of time (such as that of any reader at the specific moment they are reading these comments) will immediately begin to expire in its relevance...
Just thought I'd state the obvious, just for the record 😀

Same here. I just brought one of these (the Peugeot branded version) used for £4k. Hardly cutting edge now, but does everything I reasonably need and I'm really, really happy with Iona :) - My take is that it's actually easier to have this car now than it was then - we now have a waaaay better destination and highway charging system. Back in 2010 these cars were essentially constricted to a 35 mile radius around home. Now I can drive it up to relatives in the Midlands with 2 stops en-route, which is fine for me as I like to stop and stretch my legs and get some fresh air.

Here we are in 2018. They are STILL making this car. Price now £15999, although I bought mine second-hand (2011 version Peugeot iOn) and they have done NO upgrades to this at all. Which I find a bit of a shame but I suppose they would have to put the price up. The 60 - 70 mile range (depending on temp., heater, etc. suits me and I have travelled from Gloucestershire to Birmingham and Cornwall in it.As Robert says if the wait at the charger(s) are likely to be too long for your liking. You could hire or use public transport. The improvements in infrastructure is beginning to become noticeable as I can imagine when this was filmed chargers were few and far between. It is not a fast, sporty car but I have surprised a number of drivers when pulling off. What REALLY underscored the difference for me was, when it was in for repair after a shunt, I had to drive a hire car. Lovely new Astra, I put £10 of fuel in and the fuel needle NEVER MOVED. I ended up putting £30 worth of petrol for trips that I would be essentially getting for free as I have solar panels at home.So although, not very informative in a buying sense. This was still a useful trip to the beginning of the journey.

Watching this video 12 years later because I just purchased a used Mitsubishi I'm last week.. I got it as a non-running car but we're not sure why yet hopefully it isn't the battery because a replacement battery is $16,000 US dollars without labor that's just parts..
It might be the onboard charge controller which is only $4,000 US dollars or it might be a 50 cent resistor that needs to be resoldered I should find out next week from the mechanic at the dealership but I'm looking forward to driving this cute little car and I hope I can manage to make it work for my 60 mile round trip commute in the dark both ways in the cold and the rain.
It seems the odds are against me as far as having enough range remaining .. to cover my daily commute but will give it a go maybe my employer will install a charger at work and if I have one at home we can make this work out pretty good

Great episode Robert. I enjoyed the sound comparison at the end - and even at low speeds I suspect electric cars, though quiet, aren't totally silent either. Most small-engined modern petrol cars are almost silent in traffic so I can't see any justification for the impending regulations requiring them to make a noise.
Nice take on the screenwash cost too. Taking away the cost of fuel and of most servicing items that ICE cars require, I'm sure other car-related goodies would seem expensive!

Viewing this in 2019 - it is quite amazing that the 2009 iMiev used to cost £30,000 and had a range of 75 - 80 real world miles. 10 years later, you can get 40kw Nissan Leaf for a bit less than that which is well appointed and has decent range. As EVs continue to scale prices are going to come down even quicker.

Great review! My biggest issue with this car is the specialized home plug that needs to be installed by an electrician. I rent my house so I can't see spending the money on the dock if I would just have to move it when I buy a house. It seems like it would be a good idea to provide a standard home electricity option, even if it takes a long time. I am normally done driving on weeknights by 9pm so having the option to charge all night would not be a problem.

@Jesus45U - That's brilliant. If the supply for electric trains can cope with trains which in some cases need upwards of 10,000 KW to power them, surely they can help power a charging station for a car with a 50 kwh battery... (OK, so not all infrastructure can cope with that kind of load, especially not with a lot of cars charging at once, but it's still a really good idea overall.)

This video is great! The idea of electric cars are fantastic, but I think for urban dwellers specifically for people who live in apartments, like myself, it is problematic. Unless there are electric charging stations like gas stations, it would be difficult for me to find a spot charge the car. Also it is really a shame about the high cost. I really think its urgent for people to switch to non polluting modes of transport, but the high cost really prevents people from doing the switch.

That was very good review indeed. But one question that none of the EV car reviewers answer and which is particularly important in deciding to buy the car is how long will the batteries long. And when they do come to an end of life or for that matter the half life, how much will it cost to get a new battery pack which can make it work as it was when u bought the car. Sir it would be great if you could answer that question.

I seem to remember a review of a french ev car that is cheap because you buy the car,, but not the batteries. The auto co. retains ownership of the batteries for the life of the car and they'll replace them if you have any trouble with them. Or loan you an ICE car if you need to make a long trip.
Also you pay a small rental fee for the battery. Could this work for you?

@REPOMAN24722 - And you quoted fuel prices that were about 50% higher than I remember from the last time I was in Australia. On a basic level, electric motors are 3-4 more efficient than combustion engines. This should be reflected in the costs involved, but batteries have a horrible energy density compared to petrol & LPG. The Tesla S claims a range of around 480 km. But the battery to make that possible weighs more than 500kg. Even so, the real problem remains the use of non-renewable energy.

  • @JohnCBriggs

Super capasitors could be recharged in about 30 seconds or so, with enough energy form a charging station.
Supercapacitors main issue isn't recharge time, it's capacity, size and price. A capacitor bank the same size as a 50 KWh LIPO battery has roughly in the area of 10-20% the capacity of the LIPO and would cost more ... depending on how well they are buildt and how well they are cooled ... etc. etc.
I'm hoping a hybrid between capacitors and batteries comes out.

@ultimazer1 For the BetterPlace model to work, you can ONLY plug in to a BetterPlace charger. So you cannot connect at your Grandmother's house or any other place. This is how they charge you per mile. You must use their charger.

@j101saar The Leaf actually lets you drive on electricity for 100 miles or so, without paying for petrol, which saves you money. So you can go on a longer trip than 40 miles with a Leaf using only electricity. You can't with a Volt. As I said, a Volt may make sense for some people, but so does a Leaf.

+pioneer7777777 you must calculate how far you can go with ~60 miles or with recharge ~120 miles

@lockhughes This is true of standard Li-Ion Cells with deep cycling. Cells for these cars are different and may have as many as 10,000 cycles before dropping to 80% of original capacity. The battery must be good for 150,000 miles and 10 years to meet California standards.

Depends on the type of battery and the way it's been buildt up.
Most lithium battery cells can be charged from empty to full in around 3-4 minutes if you have enough power and cooling. Just look at RC batteries. But the technology is there, and has been for a while.

@ultimazer1 Actually fast charge stations can store charge overnight when grid use is low, and they can use cheaper battery chemistries to do so. Then they can use some of that during the day if grid demand is too high. Plus, people might just have to wait a few more minutes sometimes, just as when there is a long line at the gas station. Most people will charge at home, overnight, when it's cheaper. Why pay extra and spend time at a charge station if you don't have to?

@JohnCBriggs Toshiba have just as we speak announced theri mitsu partnership .Toshiba has developed a new original anode material and a new electrolyte that enhances both safety and rapid recharging. the SCiB battery offers an exceptionally long life of up to 20 years, is capable of accepting 6,000-plus charges and is rapid recharge ready and can increase the range..thisis what happens when money and R&D are put into car batteries

@ultimazer1 To answer the question about BetterPlace consider this. Which is cheaper, buying a car or leasing it? and why?

  • @JohnCBriggs
    @JohnCBriggs 14 лет назад

@ultimazer1 Ask yourself this question, what is the most expensive part of an EV? It is the battery, right. So in order to make battery swapping work, BetterPlace must store a significant number of additional batteries at the battery swapping station. These are an added expense that Nissan LEAF owners will not have. Also, for BetterPlace, you must have one of their charging stations at home, also an additional expense that you must pay for.

@vonnikon You're absolutely right. Price of Li-ion batteries is not so expensive.
Maybe the Mitsubishi supplier (GS-Yuasa) provides too much expensive Li-ion batteries. They should change their battery supplier.
In addition, the iMiEV has only 16kWh batteries. So, if the supplier is ThunderSky:
16000/3.2=5000 dollars of batteries (3,221.85 GBP).
The 47kW electric synchronous motor and the inverter may cost $5000.
But the price is over £30000 and it's absolutely not justified.

On the very last point about noise, having nearly been knocked down by a puris in a car park - they are very quiet when going slowly, which unluckily coincides with area of high pedestrian / car interaction. As far as i'am concerned I should of looked where I was going.... but its still a problem.

A petrol car right now, can enter the fueling bay, refuel, pay the bill with card and leave the bay in 5 roughly minutes. That's what an EV quick charger really needs to compete with.
Entering the bay, plugging in, then charge for 15-20 mins, and then having to unplug, and pay the bill - it is gonna add up in time, and meanwhile the queue is growing - Must be faster.
And also, you'd have to put up the quick starging stations at about all service stations, as it is, they are way to scarce.

The train network would probably not be able to power the entire infrastructure if everyone changed to electrical cars, but it would certainly be a good start. And there's plenty of space next to most rail tracks, that you could add more powerlines for future expansion.
The real issue here, is that electrical cars are not very useful because they take so long to recharge, this could help alliviate that problem, making them more useful.

@j101saar Sorry you're not convinced, but I've actively been involved in researching and pricing EV systems for a while. I know that BMW paid ACP $11K each for the motor/controller system used in the MiniE for example, in quantity, I know that UQM charges $25K for single units of their system, even half that would be $12.5K. Yes EV's similar to these were produced in the 90's, and the costs were extremely high for the same reasons. The components are still made in very small quantities.

One of Robert's Classics, with spot on predictions regarding price. ( 2013 ) While many makes continue with the foolery of "compliance cars" which are cheap conversions of dubious merit and minute production numbers.. Nissan forged ahead making the Leaf a World Car... produced and sold all over gods green earth.. and evolving nicely. With VW and BMW trying to play catch-up, while Citroen and Renault make EV's that will never see the shores of the U.S, for lack of a dealer net-work. Funny how the Koreans managed where the French opted out.

Capt Larry Our neighbor has a Leaf and she already had "Charging system issues". She finally got her car back a few weeks later. The problem is most Dealerships do not have anybody who knows how to SERVICE the cars they sell. Some have to wait for a factory employee to fly out and solve the issues. Which is why Tesla sends out their own people to fix any issues customers may have.

@Ferkemall - That's the reality of pretty much everything you own. Technological advances lead to greater specialisation. Indeed, pretty much *all* current production ICEs are not roadside fixable and rely on computers to control them. EVs however have the very real and signifcant advantage of much greater reliability (proven in real world use) due to being mainly solid state technology - there's far, far fewer moving parts, much less heat, friction and mechanical wear. My car is the same as the one shown here, 5 years old and far from cutting edge in terms of range (16.5kwh is under half the battery capacity of the new Zoe, and less than a 5th that of a top of the line Tesla Wankfest). Do I worry about range? Honestly? No. I can honestly say I don't fret about it. Would I like a bigger battery? Sure. But it's not a big deal, I'm certainly not going to fork over a ton of money to buy a load of battery capacity I don't need.

@paultrd The silent bit was a bit naughty really as the issue is not with vehicles at high speed as Robert showed but with relativity low speed vehicles. As a cyclist in a congested city I have been almost caught out by an electric van, that pulled out silently and without indicating(and without looking), now on congested bits of road I am in habit of looking out vehicles with tailpipes and am doubly cautious around them

Wow I was shocked at the retail price! I love the idea and a car like that would be a great replacement for my own run around. But that initial price is just the only stopping point! Just get some decent designers on it!
Also the noise of the car comes from the tyre rubbing on the road. I imagine at slower speeds it would be quieter in comparison but people walk out on petrol cars because they are not paying attention anyway. An electric car wont make any difference.
