I’m so glad you kept your struggles in this video. A lot of people don’t show this and I appreciate it, Mary. It turned out so beautiful and I love the wood appliqué you used. It finishes of the piece beautifully!
I agree wholeheartedly. It's encouraging to know that I'm not the only one who faces struggles and disappointments when a project doesn't turn out as I envisioned it, but with a little perseverance and elbow grease it can become a beautiful, if different, piece in the end. The wooden applique was truly an inspiration and takes the wardrobe to another level.
It's nice to see how you leave the video unedited because we all learn from you and each other this way. I love bleached wood also, sometimes with certain types of wood you are better off doing a light paint wash instead of a wax. Some wood tones like red oaks or any wood with deeper red or honey tones don't whiten as well with white wax. If you use Annie Sloan chalk paint to do a white wash, it will actually stain the wood so you get a better result. Waxes are better off on paint because it seeps into the paint, seals it and actually strengthens the color. I've done white wash, and other color paint washes and then I seal them with a lacquer sealer with matte finish (Rustoleum) has worked best for me in that regard. Lacquer sealers work much better on higher traffic area pieces like tables, cabinets, chairs etc... 2-3 coats with full 24-48 dry time in between. I used the same sealer on my piano, went from black to white paint and 3 coats matte sealer and it looks great! Also much easier to work with.
You have to think of yourself as artist. An artist doesn't always get the result he wants the first time round. An author has to edit a story many times before he is satisfied, and so on. You know what end result yoou're going for whether it's in restoring furniture, or decorating your porch, or making crafts for your mantleplace. You're an artist, and we love watching you work!
Hi Mary! All your hard work paid off!!! The wardrobe is beautiful and applying the applique was a great idea!!! After the paint smell disappears, put a cedar hanger inside. That will really make it smell wonderful!
What you did here is called an artist eye. I do this with so many many pieces. I usually end up with something I really love, but if we don’t like it we know we can’t be happy until we get what we want! I love that you showed us the artistic process!
Mary, I’m playing catch up on your videos, and WOW this piece turned out beautiful and the scrollwork piece at the bottom looks like it was always there. Thank you for not editing out your trials on this piece, it allows us to learn as well. You did an Amazing job you certainly have determination and talent. 💜💜💜
I didn't realize I was unsubscribed from the channel and I began missing the new videos being put out. So glad to be back. Thank you for all the positivity you bring to us and such great ideas.
What determination and perseverance you have, Mary! The finished wardrobe is beautiful and I especially loved the wood carving you used to disguise the lost veneer. Everything turned out lovely but having seen the color it was before... I gotta say that I preferred that color to the sanded and bleached color. Just my difference in taste. At the same time, I love how it turned out and think it will be lovely in one of your rental cottages!
Us women change our minds all the time. It us part of our DNA. Came out looking really good. That wood design on the bottom was a great addition. Great job! You might have gotten sore muscles but you persevered!
Bless your heart, Mary! You showed such tenacity with this piece and persevered until you got it the way you wanted it. It turned out beautiful. Can't believe you paid only $10 for it! Also, we have been using your soaps and absolutely love them!
Nothing like trial and error and not giving up, you don't know if something is going to work or not if you don't try! I'm glad you left everything that you did in this video! It's always encouraging to watch someone hang in there and not give up and then look how it turned out just beautiful! I love that applique what a nice touch! I can't wait to see your cabins when there are all finished being built and all the decorating is in place. They are going to be soooo sweet with that wonderful Mary touch!
Hello Mary thank you for not editing out all the lessons you learned working on this piece. You are the real deal and so cute! My husband and I watch each Wednesday and you inspire and motivate me (yes even when you clean). That little voice in my head often says, if Mary can do it, I can do it! That may sound silly but having an autoimmune disease that involves chronic pain and malaise encouragement and inspiration are needed. Thank you!
I really respect you for showing us all the frustrations you had with this piece, I don’t think I’ve ever watched a video that showed all the problems you were faced with. Thank you ❣️
Poor Mary! How difficult to have a vision and have to work so hard to attain it. Your tenacity sure paid off in the end! Thank you for showing us that things don’t always turn out perfectly the first time.
Mary’s son: Hey dad where ya going? Dad: Going on another bleach and wax run 😂 Mary: Sandpaper! I need more sandpaper please!! I think I’ve been watching your videos since day one but never commented. This video had me rolling with laughter! It’s happened to me a few times as well, a project that should be a couple hours turns in to an 6 hr job!
I think it’s admirable that you continue with a piece until you’re happy with it. No matter what others think. Thank you for sharing your talents with us. 😃🌺
I’m in agreement with those who said they were glad you kept this video “real” and showed your struggles. It’s frustrating to me when I make mistakes or things just don’t work as I think they should, and I often wonder if I’m the only one who has these issues. I’m relieved to find out I’m not alone, and someone as experienced as you also comes across problems. And you stuck with it! What determination! Thank you for showing us this beautiful transformation.
I think half the battle was getting the piece up the driveway! It turned out absolutely beautiful. Thank you for taking us through all the ups and downs of the project.
I am so glad you did not shy away from showing, how things don’t always go as planned, with furniture. For future projects, wax can be removed simply with mineral spirits, and veneer can be assisted with a heat gun for removal. I only listed this hoping it will make it a lil easier if you didn’t know it. If you did it’s okay, I only wanted to help . God Bless You our friend in Christ.
When dealing with hobbies, creative jobs and and artistic endeavors, it is MY opinion that "there are no mistakes, only opportunities for creativity". I think you demonstrated that here. Congrats and it looks great! The piece you added on the bottom was perfect!! Thanks for your videos.
Hi Mary! I Love ❤ that you show your human side. The way you "go for it." It's great sometimes to experiment and be creative to see what works. Patience is truly a virtue that you possess. The wardrobe was a great bargain and will be such a nice piece in the cottage. I was thinking maybe one of your soap bars would give it a nice scent. Thank you for sharing and caring. Peace
We all really learned a lot from your trials in this video. This wardrobe turned into a big project and yet well worth the time and elbow grease! I thought the use of the carved addition was a stroke of genius, Mary!
Great video!! This was a labour of love if ever. I could feel your struggle as I have done the same. Something I have learned after years of finishing old treasured pieces is I always use a wood conditioner by miniwax to allow the grain in the wood to close. This has worked like a charm to keep the wood or veneer uniform in color with my water base stain or sealant. Another tip I learned is old veneer finishs better with a water base product rather then anything with oil. The piece is beautiful.
That is brilliant, Melody, to remind us that a water-based sealant closes up the grain. That is the thing I needed to be reminded about so that when I re-do my old walnut burl wardrobe I get an even finish. Thanks!
It’s so wonderful that you kept all the problem issues in the video! Really helps us. Love your determination and kept going. It’s beautiful Mary! Love your furniture makeovers!
You are awesome!! Sometimes, we have to "put up a good fight" and finish the race... in this case, get a redo right. I truly appreciate you sharing your talents with us! God bless, and may He allow you to rescue many more pieces of furniture!!
Looks great! I know the struggle, I have sanded, painted, sanded again, painted, cried, then finally came up with solutions. I feel your struggle! Love that you didn't give up!
It turned out so pretty. I love the white paint & wallpaper inside. It makes it so bright. And that applique on the bottom section is amazing. It looks like it was always there. It might have been a bit of a challenge, but in the end, you won! Great job!
Mary, I have enjoyed your channel for several months now and I enjoy and look forward to seeing them each week. I am ALWAYS inspired! Than you so much.
It’s a true struggle when things do not go as planned, but thank you for your transparency with this piece. I find it easy to gat discouraged when this happens. To see someone of your talent persevere, gives me motivation to keep trying! Thank you! Love your work and your channel!
This turned out so beautifully! The wood carving for the bottom was a stroke of genius and really saved the piece. I’m so glad it worked, after all that work you did! Thanks for showing your whole process too.
For future projects, when trying to get rid of a laminate; use a heat gun to warm up and soften the glue. Scrape the laminate before the glue cools. Sand away any residue remaining. Great work as always Mary!
Also, don't push down so hard on the sander. Pushing will ruin the motor and pad plus it's just easier to let the sander do the hard work instead of your hands. You did a beautiful job.
You did a fantastic job on the wardrobe! I admire your stay with it ability. I love watching your videos. And I love your attention to detail, especially with the wood applique.
What you did today is call determination. My father used to call it stubbornness I prefer to think of it as determination. Your process teaches us that you will n can change your mind n will come to finish a beautiful product
Such a pretty end result! I love that you showed how you changed your mind along the way…lots of trial and error, but you got the desired look in the end.
Mary, I love to refinish furniture and realize how challenging it can be at times. You just amaze me on how much patience you have! I love watching your videos. I can only hope you will rub off on me. Lol. Thanks for another great video!!!
I was so certain you were going to paint this piece…good choice in refinishing it. Refinishing furniture is definitely challenging but look how beautiful it is!
Ohhh, I just love how this turned out. You did so well, going with your gut, starting and it just didn't seem right, going back! Once it is completely aired out.... you could hang a cedar block from the rod inside, and that will take care of any off smells left behind.
Thank you for the great entertainment. Thank you also for recommending Zincks. We were there today and found what we needed. Material for our 1948 Dodge. Thank you for your great work and looking forward to the next video
Mary, so glad you kept after this project! It turned out beautifully! Love the applique on the bottom! Thanks for showing us all that sometimes projects like this aren't always straight forward. It gives us encouragement and inspiration to keep going on our own 😊
It's no wonder you are so talented. How can we learn if we never make mistakes? You not giving up but trying different things is how you learn and how we learn from you as well. Thanks for sharing. You are truly inspiring ❤️
I learn from you trying different methods to get the piece to where you want it. I also appreciate your talent and perseverance. Thanks for taking us on this journey.
Turned out so pretty, well done. All your hard work and perseverance paid off. The wallpaper and the little wooden filigree piece finish it off beautifully.
Hi Mary! You both have guts to go out in that icy slope 😱. Always working hard. You took that furniture piece & turned it into something beautiful- I love how it turned out, especially the inside.
I have changed my mind on lots of furniture, but that's how I learn not to do it again (sometimes). Taking off Veneer ,I have placed a wet towel and let it set a few hours and it usually comes right off. I love how it looks and I know it's frustrating wasting time especially when you have a million other things to do. I would have given up and painted it., but it looks beautiful worth the time spent. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos.
Your background is showing how busy you are,all the time….I believe that is a Christmas quote..I was wincing watching you pick up the wardrobe on your own your poor back…..love the end result of the wardrobe it is gorgeous inside and out…and I like the fact that it’s not going in your booth and that is for the cottages. As always Mary I look forward to my Wednesday video and I love all your content..Blessings x
Mary, this is one of my all time favorite videos of yours. I could almost see the wheels of your extremely creative mind turning! Your sense of humor is one of your most endearing assets! Thank you for showing us the entire process. I think it has encouraged many of us who also have dealt with "challenging" projects. Your determination paid off. The cabinet is really unique and lovely and will be so perfect in one of your cabins. Wouldn't surprise me if your guests wanted to buy pieces of your handiwork, especially this extra special cabinet! You inspire me beyond words, and I absolutely adore all of your videos. Extra fun seeing you and John working together!
I like mixing old + new furniture together! I liked the color of the sanded wardrobe best, but the finished product is lighter than it was. I fully expected you to paint it white, which you did not do in this case! You are keeping us on our toes, aren't you? 😎 I appreciate the thought and effort which goes into refurbishing each piece. Thank you! Keep Hope Alive, in 2022! So sorry you struggled through that piece. So glad you showed me that even if it doesn’t go along with your vision, keep working it will turn out great. It’s lovely Mary, I love the paper and addition of the wood piece at the bottom was a great idea. It looks terrific!
You are so resilient, I am the same way. It has to look exactly like what we imagine lol the piece turned out so beautiful. Next time , use a paint wash of a neutral paint color that looks like wood. 50/50 paint in water and you still see all the grain. Love watching you! You are my favorite channel ❤
Like the end result. The struggles are real, just let's everyone know things are not always simple. So if someone tries to tackle a project, keep going it will be fine.
Well done Mary your idea to use the wood applique was inspired . I know you didn't want to paint or paper the inside of the wardrobe but it looks great and hopefully it will eliminate the smell . So much work. God bless your hands.
Wow Mary! What a beautiful piece. The struggle was real. You did a fantastic job. I hope you priced this piece high. What you went through to get it to what it became...so worth it.
Is anyone else absolutely amazed at the incredible strength this woman has, as well as, never having paint all over herself?
Amen to that!!🐞✌️🕉️
It’s a blessed gift!🔥
YES!
Years of practice. LOVE her projects

Exactly what I was about to suggest!
You and Hannah’s Happy Home should do a collab. You both are so talented and are skirt girls. I love it. God bless you ma’am!!
So impressed with your determination. This happens to all of us, and the real loss would be to give up. Beautiful cabinet, great job. 💕
A wardrobe that is light in color inside is a Godsend. Really.

I kept talking to the TV screen....paint it black. Paint it black.
😆
I love all your white and black pieces!

You have such vision Mary. Who else could look at that old thing and see beauty and usefulness. Now I want one for my guest room.
You are not changing your mind too often - you are creating.
Thanks for sharing the whole process. That is encouraging to know I am the only one who can struggle through some project and not give up.
When all else fails...sand and start over. I love your can do attitude😊
It’s so wonderful that you kept all the problem issues in the video! Really helps us. Love your determination and kept going. It’s beautiful Mary! Love your furniture makeovers!

I love it Mary, it is beautiful and the added piece at the bottom works perfectly! ♥️
I recognize it like that, you start in good spirits with such a piece and what patience and perseverance you need to finish it. You did good!!
Oh Mary, I'm glad you persisted. The wardrobe is beautiful! Pretty sure I would have given up and painted it. Lovely!
I love the interior with the wallpaper. The exterior to me personally is just ok.
Wow! What a project that turned out to be. I think the wood appliqué was a good idea and added additional interest to this piece.
This turned out so beautifully! The wood carving for the bottom was a stroke of genius and really saved the piece. I’m so glad it worked, after all that work you did! Thanks for showing your whole process too.
It's funny how every time I need to work on one of my projects, I watch one of your videos. Thank you so much for your inspiration!
Perseverance wins, love the final outcome. Where there is a will there is a way. Thank you for sharing the whole process.
Just be sure you remove it while it's still heated... otherwise it hardens like cement!
UGH!
You did a fantastic job on the wardrobe! I admire your stay with it ability. I love watching your videos. And I love your attention to detail, especially with the wood applique.
and Mrs T Wow Mary you got there in the end clever addition at the bottom of the wardrobe and the wallpaper is perfect on the inside well done

Such a pretty end result! I love that you showed how you changed your mind along the way…lots of trial and error, but you got the desired look in the end.
The filigree on the bottom is a beautiful touch to the piece.

Everything you touch turns to magic
These are the best videos. When you experiment and have to make changes. We all learn something. Really enjoyed this. Wardrobe looks great!
This reminded me so much of my process. I won't rest until I get it right! I'm so glad you left this in the video! Thanks for sharing.
I admire your tenacity! Thank you for not giving up and painting it. Great way to mask the issue with the veneer!
the wooden applique is amazing. It adds so much to the piece!

Hi Mary! You both have guts to go out in that icy slope 😱. Always working hard. You took that furniture piece & turned it into something beautiful- I love how it turned out, especially the inside.
I love that you tried several things! We all do this!
Love the trial and error. Helps to know everyone has struggles!! 💗
The wallpaper is just what it needed.
You're a good example of don't give up I'm sure it's going to be beautiful when you get done
Determination is what you have. Love all your projects.
Can’t believe you work inside your lovely home. I’m such a messy Marvin. Love the cupboard💕‼️
I absolutely loved how it turned out. You didn’t give up and you are so patient ☺️ It’s going to look beautiful in one of the rooms.
Beautiful! The appliqué was the perfect decision.

Thank you for showing us the entire process. I think it has encouraged many of us who also have dealt with "challenging" projects. Your determination paid off. The cabinet is really unique and lovely and will be so perfect in one of your cabins. Wouldn't surprise me if your guests wanted to buy
pieces of your handiwork, especially this extra special cabinet!
You inspire me beyond words, and I absolutely adore all of your videos. Extra fun seeing you and John working together!
Hi 👋 Linda how are you doing?
Hope you don’t mind if I subscribe to your channel
I can't wait for your cottages to be ready!! This piece turned out beautiful!! 😍
Your wardrobe turned out so nice. I bet if you put one of your lovely open candles inside of it that would make it smell so wonderful!
All your energies and efforts were worthwhile! The Armoire and the decorative scroll work are wonderful!
You're very stoic Mary. A lady with true grit.... love it. 🇫🇴🇬🇧❤️
Shalom! ⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸
Oh my goodness! The trouble that piece gave you! It looks great!! Can’t wait to see the cottages.
Well done Mary your idea to use the wood applique was inspired . I know you didn't want to paint or paper the inside of the wardrobe but it looks great and hopefully it will eliminate the smell . So much work. God bless your hands.
All of your hard work on the wardrobe was really worth it! It looks beautiful and I love the wallpaper on the interior of the cabinet. Great job!
Mary, what an extraordinary transformation! I especially like the inside--it is so elegant!
Wow Mary! What a beautiful piece. The struggle was real. You did a fantastic job. I hope you priced this piece high. What you went through to get it to what it became...so worth it.
