- Dee Dee is a Northern Thai Street Food truck located in Austin, Texas started by Lakana and Justin Trubiana. Their menu consists of items like pad kaprow (stir fried pork with fried Thai basil and fried egg), som tom (papaya salad), and gai yang (Thai roast chicken). You won’t be finding any pad thai or fried rice at Dee Dee, as all of their recipes are Northern specialties from Lakana’s home region of Isan.
Lakana and Justin met by chance in Thailand, fell in love, and ultimately moved to Austin, Texas and started Dee Dee. They use Northern Thai ingredients like chili paste, fish sauce, lemongrass, kaffir lime, and holy basil in their dishes. The result is Lakana and Justin’s unforgettable Thai comfort food, where you can taste the love in each bite.

I live in Austin and go to Dee Dee at least once a month. It's hard to express just how incredibly good this food is, and how wildly different it is from the Thai food you typically see in the US. For anyone who's visited Thailand and misses the flavors of the food there - Dee Dee is the only place I've found yet that's at that level.

Damn this girl know how to fried perfect Thai style crispy sunny side up eggs. Why can't a chef like her exist in Northern Virginia lol, we severely need authentic Thai restaurants in this city.
Check out the Thai restaurant in Eden Center or Padaek in Falls Church. There is some very good Thai food by US standards at both places.
@@matthewshannon9 I havn't check out Khao San in Eden Center yet, it sure looks good. My personal favorite is still Bangkok54. Most of the stuff there are quite authentic and not Americanized sweet. Delicious Mai Tai too.
Especially in Old Town Alexandria. Mahi Thai, Asian bistro, and noodle box are not that great.
I like Thai Chef Street Food in Dupont Circle and Charm Thai in Georgetown
You can make it your own by buying an asian small wok. Use lots of oil. Make it very hot, then crack an egg. Have it with soy sauce, lime juice and white rice.
The Som Tom (papaya salad) they make is SO FREAKING DELICIOUS. I swear I could eat it every single day. It's so nice to see people be successful at something that are passionate about.

As a Thai, I feel touched of how you represent Thai-Esan cuisine in the humble way. The food is awesome and so are you both.

My grandma was the same and she just recently retired. My grandpa was a GI overseas and brought her home and she worked NONSTOP and it led to her having severe arthritis despite being a really amazing chef as that food peddler in Phuket, Thailand before it became a super touristy area.
To this day, she has made the best eggs, the best pad thai, and even served up her dishes to KISS before they became KISS and even the Beatles when they were traveling through Tucson.
I don't know why but I always want to cook at home and maybe it's the way we Thai people are brought up to be self-reliant and never eat or buy out because we could do it better for cheaper and healthier.
This woman is a hard worker cause she puts in so much love on everything.

You call it innocence but all I see is hard work, dedication, genuine kindness and care for others. Innocence is something you lose when you grow up, what she has is far more precious than that. She works harder than literally anyone reading this comment, calling it innocence makes it look like it's something she just happens to have.

I wrote it because it's easy to watch people trying to do good and think "this person is so innocent, i wish i could be like this but [...insert current ongoing problem in your life].". The truth (or rather my interpretation of what I saw) is that her positive and hopeful attitude is a choice that she makes, her hard-work is discipline that she imposes on herself. Coming from rural Thailand she has probably faced many hardships, but she isn't cynical or bitter like many of us are because that's a choice you have to make to get a better outlook on life.
I think that a lot of people nowadays forget that there's as much good as bad in this world. Especially when it comes to the 24h information culture and the Internet. You only see what you want to focus on and if it makes you unhappy, maybe you need to change something in your environment.

I think you're reading into it too much. She uses the same tone when she says other foods in English. She puts more emphasis when she names the recipes in her mother tongue. It could be just that she's more comfortable speaking Thai or just that English is boring to her. It could also be that Thai language requires more inflection, whereas the Texas English dialect she learned has more of a slow drawl.
@@charlyy1337 - Oh give me a break. Pad Thai, which is the national dish, is a mix of stir-fry noodles, eggs, chicken or shrimp, scallions, *TOFU,* bean sprouts, peanuts, tamarind and fish sauce. Tofu is used just like any other critical ingredient in Thai cuisine. There are a few types of tofu used in Thai cooking, both *at home* and in the restaurants...
*Firm block tofu:* This is used in five-spice eggs, soups and served deep-fried.
*Yellow block tofu:* This is used in Pad Thai, stir-fried bean sprout and crispy noodle (หมี่กรอบ).
*Tube tofu:* This is relatively new and has pretty much replaced soft block tofu. It is used mainly in soup. There is a version with egg added, which is useful for the elderly and infirm.
*Tofu skin:* This is used in soups and stir-fried dishes.
*Stuffed tofu:* This is used mainly in noodle dishes.
This is great to see. My fiancé is Thai and we want open up a Thai food truck in Washington DC once we get thru the visa process. We couldn’t have picked a worse time politically for her to immigrate to the U.S, but we are pushing thru and our love is strong. Maybe one day she’ll get recognized for the amazing cook she is!

That Thai minced meat with basil leaves is one of my favorites while in Thailand for a holiday trip . It might look like an easy dish but the easier the dish, the harder it is to get it right . That roast chicken looks so so good. If I ever had the chance to visit Austin Texas , i'll certainly drop by to visit Dee Dee.
