  • Elly Suraya Greenfield is the owner of Satay By The Bay SF, the only Singaporean, Malay & Halal food truck in San Francisco. Although satay is their most popular dish, as it’s marinated overnight, grilled to order on bamboo skewers, and served with homemade peanut sauce whose recipe was handed down by Elly’s grandmother, the food truck also sells other Singaporean-inspired dishes such as chili crab sandwiches and chili crab fries.

When I worked in KL, I'd end up wondering the streets of the Golden Triangle at night and seeing the different 24 hour Mamak, Chinese and Satay places; all the little food trucks too and the lanterns and lights. It was like a cultural fusion of Tamil, Malay, Chinese cuisines and everyone doing their thing. I can still remember the sweet, charred taste of satay grilled to order that just melted in your mouth when you broke past that delicate crust of caramelised meat and marinade. The kacang (peanut) sauce just took it over the top. I could eat 20 skewers no problem. Oh and I just remembered the cubes of sticky rice too. Man... those were good days, just seeing some old auntie or uncle fanning the flames and the hot humid nights, people watching.

Dude!! Everything about Satay By the Bay is great: the food, the people, and the Rock’n’Roll soul. This documentary piece is really well done too. This family has great character and values. It shows in their food and in their fantastic daughter. Thank you Dave, Elly, and Suraya! You guys ROCK!

I love it when the comment section is not flooded with Indonesians, Malaysians and Indonesians fighting. The fact that she mentioned that she is Singaporean Malay born from Javanese descendants represents all people in the region.
