Glenn, the difference with the pinch harmonics is due to the difference in scale length. The location of the harmonics changes once you change the scale, so if you're used to playing mostly 25,5 inch guitars, the shorter Gibson scale is gonna give you some trouble at first until you adjust your technique. Happens to me all the time when switching from my LP Style to my Telecaster and vice versa.

Yeah the Prophecy line is very solid. You get a lot of bang for your buck. You may have to get it set up as the G demonstrated but that is a fairly common thing for guitars like this anyways
I'd argue that a £800 (here in the UK) should be pretty much ready to go out of the box IMO. I found my SG Prophecy to have super high action due to the frets not being level. The spec is awesome with the Grover lockers, graphtec nut and the Fishmans but I found the fit and finish to be very sub par.
Meh just order it from Sweetwater, or a place that does a fine tooth comb at purchase, as it should be. You should never buy a guitar that isn't set up and ready to go, as there can be issues like Truss Rod failure from the factory, neck warp/S shaped bends in the neck, and a host of other issues that make the guitar scrap or have incredibly costly repairs. Now you can say that is what a warranty is for but once bought you shouldn't have to return it, people should do their job properly $800 and above should be done correctly with a tune up and be gig worthy immediately, not after taking it to a tech or luthier and $200 later, they have a responsibility of delivering a non-problematic instrument that is playable.
And if you want more of a Mustaine sound out of it, just drop in a Duncan Thrash Factor pickup some time later, and maybe a '59 in the neck position too.

Call me ignorant, and I never did the research, but isn't Epiphone kind of like the Squire to Fender? The Honda to the Acura? As in they're essentially the same company as Gibson. It's weird to me that the attention to detail and quality is here and not their flagship line if that's the case.
They have to. They signed so many artists to the Epiphone brand so they have to make quality products for them. Never had a problem with an Epiphone specially with the new models with Fishmans installed it’s just great
sort of, epiphones vary from a couple of hunderd to over a thousand, some use USA pickups, most dont. Theyre build abroad wich genrally isnt a bad thing these days
i know cleans aren't what people are buying these guitars for, and definitely not what people are coming to the channel for, but I broke a string on my tele and had to take my prophecy extura on a jazz gig, and honestly, it sounded better than some semi hollows i have owned.
@@ashleyjohansson230 if it's your thing. Tbh, i play with light to moderate distortion on most of my gigs except jazz gigs, where i plug into my bass amp for headroom reasons. everything else my default is minimum light distortion.
The Prophecy selection is looking very promising for Epiphone bringing their designs into the 21st century with modern technology and premium specs at competitive price point. I've been interested in watching everyone's reviews of Prophecy (especially bc I shelled out for the JC Prophecy)
The prophecies were ruined a long time ago. I want my old Prophecy GX's with Dirty Fingers back. Today I'd have to pay *more* for a guitar with inferior pickups, and then have to pay to buy the pickups I want. Fuck that noise.

@@ehsanhaq155 You can still buy the pick-ups separate, but it's not the same. I remember playing the GXs at GC. They are almost effortless to play. It was insane to me, because they felt closer to playing like a top end guitar, like a Gibson or PRS, than the thousand plus dollar Epiphone Elite series did. I remember the Prophecy line being around 600 dollars brand new, but I could be wrong I was a teen-ager back then lol
@@Mephilis78 yes yes Gibson is indeed selling their pickups now. But I wonder if they're anything like the old USA dirty fingers they put in back in 2006. I was just finishing college back then and I remember it being around 500/600 GBP (British pounds) when I got it. I can tell you, after all these years, it's in near perfect condition and plays like a dream. I don't know much about the Epiphone China factory but it's mad good stuff they make at the higher end.
i really like how budget workhorse guitars are getting more attention these days. i've modded some low and middle guitars into stellar rock machines over the years. surprising the shit out of people what they hear/feel when they play my guitar that they just snorted at, never got old for me. these days, there are lots of guitars that you don't even have to do more than adjustments, and they're somewhat reasonably priced compared to the rest of the market. that's soo cool. also, the 4 panel intro is pretty epic.
Growing up i was always under the impression that good guitar = $$$ and it is nice to see that with rhings like LTD, shecter etc you can have good without cashing in your 401k
@@Fraeg there was a time when that's how it was. modern manufacturing, relatively inexpensive shipping, and countries with shitty labor laws have really been a boon for guitar players.
If you're not getting the pinch harmonic, you might be trying it it the wrong spot. Scale length changes where it is. Your hand seems to be naturally sitting further away from the neck pickup on the Harley Benton, so try shifting back a bit on the Epiphone.
Hey Glen, this video could not have come out at a better time for me. I just got mine a few days ago, I'd been eyeing it for a couple of months now, and I love it so much. Extremely fun to play. Glad to see it getting your seal of approval, makes me feel even better about my purchase. Interestingly enough, I also had the same issue with the truss rod being extremely relaxed.
My main guitar is an Epiphone Les Paul Studio that I bought for $250 US back in 2018. I got it set up for a few different tunings over the years, and it’s by far my favorite guitar. I love it so much. If I had to choose, I’ll take Epiphone over Gibson any day.
The only difference is the hardware, Gibson kinda purposfully cripples the Epiphones with weaker pickups, but you can do a swap-out to Gibson pickups and have the best of both worlds. I own a Gibson Les Paul, and have given that advice to buy an Epiphone and swap out the hardware many times. Now you can get an Epiphone "CNC PRINTOUT" from china for even cheaper, as a "chibson".

@@nocturnal101ravenous6 Yeah I did that but one step further and just ordered the guitar I wanted from Chibson directly with instructions for what I wanted, and they made it custom for me, with "printouts" of epiphone/gibson files for signature series (fancy inlays) guitars combined together. Its an SG, Diablo body, with a left handed tony iommi signature fretboard upside down as a right handed freboard (crosses upside down). Its amazing. Needed ONE fret fixed, and of course new pickups if you DON'T want it to harmonic squeal every other note and feed back the instant you try to mute it. But you plan on replacing the pickups, people toss out the "alex lifeson" combo 498t 496R (weird combo using one high output alnico and one high output ceramic) in the Les Paul Axcesses and replace them so they're easily found on the used market for Like $100 for the set, I paid $110 for my set for that SG.
My Schecter was the same. Flawless. Plays like butter. The action is so good. I've bought basically nothing but Schecter since getting my 1st one in 2012. Just love them. Never been disappointed.
My first real "metal" guitar was a Schecter c6 deluxe, loved just about everything about it except for the cheapo licensed floyd rose. No matter who set it up the thing just would not stay in tune so I ended up trading it along with a couple of pedals for a Hellcat, which was a truly excellent guitar.
I own nearly every popular brand of guitar (over 100) and I have to say there is something truly different about Schecter guitars. They have a solidness and resonance that seems to trump all other guitars. I can't explain it any other way. Especially their guitars with tune-o-matic string-through setups. They seem to have more bite and snap.

I bought this guitar a few months ago, best purchase I ever made. The fishman pickups are really nice and it is so easy to play. I put a Floyd FRX on it too, but that was after market.
Big fan of this guitar. Love the looks, love the hardware, love the price. I've been really thinking of getting it for quite some time. If I could change one thing I would prefer a 25.5 scale (and maybe also the imput jack), but exept for that it's literally my perfect guitar.
Fun fact: when the V was invented in 58 it was Gibson’s attempt at entering… the country-western music market that was dominated by Fender of course. The thought was when you were standing you would put your left arm between the two parts sticking out to form the V with the guitar strapped up really high.

@@Douglas_I You have to know in 58 things we’re a lot different then. Gibson was the company making guitars for old farts, ok maybe that parts not different lol, because the only Gibson guitars that were selling were the jazz boxes. The les Paul was a commercial failure, rock n roll was new and considered to be a passing fad. Most working musicians playing live music at that time were either guys in jazz groups or country and western players. In 58, trying to venture out from jazz boxes to compete with fender in the realm of Western swing and country music would have made the most sense financially. It wasn’t the same world we live in today. So yeah the intent of the v was to make it more comfy for your strumming hand to blaze through those Western swing rhythm parts. Everyone thought it looked stupid, nobody did it and the v and explorers were also commercial flops. It’s funny that all the standard metal shapes started out as flops no one wanted until they hit pawn shops at half the price so the kids bought them to make rock n roll in the late 60’s.

It was super fun for me to see Glen checking out this guitar. I designed the voicing preamps in the pickups and bought the same model. It's rewarding when you work to try and make something good and people like it. Some nerdy details in case it's of interest, if you use the two pickups together in single coil mode (pull volume) you get hum cancelling and it's tuned to the resonant frequency of two P90's together. It's a cool tone IMHO.
I bought the Prophecy LP last year. The action was a mile off the fretboard and unplayable in my opinion. However, after a setup it plays like a dream snd every other aspect is flawless. You mentioned Schecter playability out of the box. I believe it's because they set them up in the USA before their final destination, whereas Epiphones come to you off the boat via whatever storage facility they went to when they arrived in the USA. I absolutely LOVE my Prophecy. I also love my Brent Hinds flying V and my last generation Iommi SG. Epiphone are crushing it!
I also got a prophecy LP last year. To me, it came out of the box perfectly playable. I haven't had to mess with the action at all since I got it. It stays perfectly in tune unless I hit the headstock on something😳. Locking tuners are great, and so are the Fishmans.
@@drakegoodrich6954 Maybe it's down to who does the final inspection before packaging. I wasn't so lucky. My action at the 12th was unplayable, and a couple of strings were wound like the tuners were not locking and the lock screws were backed all the way out. Whatever. Because of it I got a chance to try out a new shop/tech and I've taken him 2 others since. Once setup, my LP really plays wonderfully. Epiphone could have done better on a basic setup, but the build quality is phenomenal, regardless of price point (I paid $780). Had I paid double I might be upset about the setup, but still would have been happy because it's just a killer guitar.
The Prophecy guitars are great. I owned one 10 or so years ago. As much as I loved my 2012 Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom I used to own, the QC on all my Epiphones I've owned have been better than the one Gibson I’ve bought new.
I got this V for Christmas, and I'm a fairly new metal player. I'm glad I could find some advice from a more experienced player, so I really knew what kind of instrument I had. Thanks so much!

Even though this show is mostly about recording snd mixing, it's also a lot of fun to see how your guitar playing is getting better and better. Hats off to you! Guitar looks totally fine if you're into the classic V-style and feel. Unlike that Gibson, it is definitely worth the cash! Yeah the short scale length does really not help with pinch harmonics. My favorite guitar style of all time as a pragmatic player still is a modern superstrat type...these can do just about anything.
I own one of those in the yellow finish and love it. Mine came with some minor issues related to fret sprouting and wiring of the 9v connector, but I got em all fixed. I also moved the top strap button to behind the top of the body like the position of other traditional flying V guitars to help with the neck dive when standing. It sounds absolutely incredible. It's a metal machine.
Eh, this is why I just get cables that have a right angle on one end, straight on the other. That way I can just switch them around depending on what guitar I'm using (I have PRS singlecuts and Fender strats). Works well for pretty much any situation.
Man this is so awesome I was sitting here hoping the last few weeks you would review an epiphone at some point, their lineup is so Superior to Gibson in every way. Been using their SG basses for 5 years now and saved about $1,000 on each one by buying Epiphone instead of Gibson

I was actually looking at the Epiphone and Gibson websites and it makes me wonder about how Gibson are still in business. (yes I know Epiphone and now my beloved MESA are keeping them afloat) They just sell the same shitty boring guitars and don't do anything different unless it's an overpriced "limited edition". Atleast Epiphone actually have a few decent choices.

I played one of these in March. It was used at Guitar Center. I felt like I could summon the apocalypse with that thing!! 24 frets with 24 3/4 scale length and the neck carve feels damn near perfect to me! Love the review!
Hi glenn... Really a huge fan of your work and honest banter. I got an epiphone 1959 les paul limited edition and I'd really love if you'd cover it some day in the near future. I've been listening mostly praise for that instrument but I think you're the only one I can trust when it comes to blunt, in-your-face truth. Personally, i like it's feel and overall build quality. Tuning machines could have been better though. Anyway, once again, i really love your honest reviews and must have gone through at least a dozen of your guitar reviews alone on the past few months. Those prophecy guitars are pretty nice. I've had a bunch in my hands and they are worth the retail price. And don't worry too much about the packing, Ive seen $1500 Hagstroms and $1200 Schecters not even wrapped in plastic or bubble wrap, just straight up cardboard.
In 2019 (edit! 2015 - stupid iPad keyboard) I bought a secondhand Gibson 1997 Les Paul Studio for a thousand bucks on consignment at my local music store. I absolutely love the guitar and it’s seen a ton of jams and a few shows, but if I were ever in the market for another Gibson style you had better bet your stash of shirtless Glenn pics I wouldn’t be buying another Gibson.
Same here, have I think a 2016 studio, maybe 2017? I don't remember, the point is I love that guitar. With the benefit of hindsight though, I realize that I was just a dumb kid that wanted the name of the headstock. If I'm ever in the market for something like a Gibson it's going to be some kind of high-end Epiphone

Minus the entertaining theatrics your reviews are great because they are very specific and obviously not skewed by brand name one way or the other. I wish I could find such a straight forward reviewer for jazz and blues guitars.
I've tried a dozen schecters and all of them were perfectly setup right out of the box, it's clearly not impossible to do but not really that big of a deal if it saves a bit of cash on the cost
I kinda love it. However i would rather a version without the fluence pickups (i don't really like active pickups). But for the price, the whole prophecy series are great.
big thing to keep in mind on the pinch harmonics is the pickups themselves. I've found that active pickups make it much easier to play PHs as a standalone noise, but because they're higher output and more sensitive than passive pickups it can be more difficult to get the PHs to shine through when playing them as part of a riff if your string muting technique isn't quite spot on.
Give us a blast of One Shot At Glory in the next guitar review. I had an epiphone explorer for years. It had a retrofit locking nut and whammy bridge with fine tuners. It wasn't a Floyd because you strung it through the body and kept the ball of the string. Always put super light Ernie Ball 8s on it and was so easy to do huge bends and wide vibrato on it. Probably needed a major setup when I sold it back to the guy who I bought it off but I got great use out of it. (Edit: point being, epiphone can make decent guitars). I'd make a couple of changes to the strap lock positions of that V you have to ensure a high headstock playing position standing up. My hands aren't suited to playing low slung guitars with neck dive. But it looks like it was almost worth the money you paid for it.

I purchased an older Prophecy EX Les Paul new a few years back and had always been a rock solid guitar holds tune perfectly, not too long ago I got the Gibson B-2 Flying V for double the price and I was somewhat disappointed to see problems with the paint and dents already on it plus it will barely stay in tune for a song! Will definitely be going Epiphone for my next guitar as clearly the Gibson logo on a guitar represents very little now…
I’ve seen countless RUclips videos where people replace the pickups and hardware on Epiphones and they play better than any modern Gibsons. I did the same with my Goth Explorer with Duncan Nazgul and Sentient.
I’m all about the guitar straps, and each guitar I buy gets something specific to it. Then I’ll walk around and figure if I can handle dropping it down low and still play comfortably. Then when I’m sitting down with it I let it hang in that same position, so no matter if you’re standing or sitting you’re comfortable with it. Congratulations Glenn. Sounds great.

Hey Glen, you should check out the Kramer Nite-V, it's in the Gibson family of products and they have one for $399 with a Floyd. It'd be interesting to see how the most budget friendly V in Gibsons owned brands compared to one of their most expensive
I got lucky and bought a used Schecter Omen off Craigslist when I first started playing. I've bought and sold many guitars since then but I still have the Schecter. And it's so nice that I bought a Schecter Banshee Mach 6 and DUDE.... IT'S SICK!!! Except for that stupid howling squelching screeching sustainiac pickup which has since been replaced. But seriously, for $1500 that Banshee is unbelievable. 5 piece neck with two strips of that purple wood, neck through construction, SS frets, crazy low action, plays so well. Schecter is the best value and quality of any guitar manufacturer without a doubt. Cheers man, keep them videos coming!!
Love the fearless reviews! I'd like to see you do the Fender Meteora. I really like mine, but honestly, I have more than a few things I would rip Fender for on it, and I would be interested to see how much your experience would line up with mine.

I have the les Paul model and really digging it. Loving the v and am thinking I need one of each model from the prophecy line in black of course. Thank you for the review and I couldn’t recommend these guitars enough if somebody’s looking for a modern version of these models at a price that won’t have you selling a kidney to get it. Edit note: re-watching the review and think it’s fantastic seeing the pick dust when you did the close-up of the neck pick up, definitely shows the amount of time you put into playing before continuing the review.
About the pinch harmonics and fluence pickup system. There is a "mode switch" that is optional (obviously not installed here) and you get a mini toggle that essentially changes the frequency response across 3 modes. I had this setup on my bass and let me tell you...if you can do a little wiring, its the best 2 bucks and drilling you'll ever spend. The default mode (no toggle) focuses more on mid range and lead, but is not necessarily full range. The 2nd (alt mode) from the switch is scooped....basically analogous to a metal zone (bad in humbucker mode), and 3rd (alt mode) is like a combination of the 1st and second - full range. Now thats the mode you want to use. Some of the 2nd mode works pretty good with the single coils engaged, more jazz focused. I might be wrong with the sequence since this is how I setup my wiring and switch pattern. But yeah, the as-is setup is losing out on two entire modes!!

After a few months it became seamless and now I can find pinch harmonics on ANYTHING now, even my acoustic.

Yeah the Prophecy line is very solid. You get a lot of bang for your buck. You may have to get it set up as the G demonstrated but that is a fairly common thing for guitars like this anyways
I'd argue that a £800 (here in the UK) should be pretty much ready to go out of the box IMO.
I found my SG Prophecy to have super high action due to the frets not being level. The spec is awesome with the Grover lockers, graphtec nut and the Fishmans but I found the fit and finish to be very sub par.
Meh just order it from Sweetwater, or a place that does a fine tooth comb at purchase, as it should be. You should never buy a guitar that isn't set up and ready to go, as there can be issues like Truss Rod failure from the factory, neck warp/S shaped bends in the neck, and a host of other issues that make the guitar scrap or have incredibly costly repairs. Now you can say that is what a warranty is for but once bought you shouldn't have to return it, people should do their job properly $800 and above should be done correctly with a tune up and be gig worthy immediately, not after taking it to a tech or luthier and $200 later, they have a responsibility of delivering a non-problematic instrument that is playable.
And if you want more of a Mustaine sound out of it, just drop in a Duncan Thrash Factor pickup some time later, and maybe a '59 in the neck position too.

Call me ignorant, and I never did the research, but isn't Epiphone kind of like the Squire to Fender? The Honda to the Acura? As in they're essentially the same company as Gibson. It's weird to me that the attention to detail and quality is here and not their flagship line if that's the case.
They have to. They signed so many artists to the Epiphone brand so they have to make quality products for them. Never had a problem with an Epiphone specially with the new models with Fishmans installed it’s just great

i know cleans aren't what people are buying these guitars for, and definitely not what people are coming to the channel for, but I broke a string on my tele and had to take my prophecy extura on a jazz gig, and honestly, it sounded better than some semi hollows i have owned.
Interesting point that you make, the first people I spotted using active pick ups were old jazzers.

The Prophecy selection is looking very promising for Epiphone bringing their designs into the 21st century with modern technology and premium specs at competitive price point. I've been interested in watching everyone's reviews of Prophecy (especially bc I shelled out for the JC Prophecy)
The prophecies were ruined a long time ago. I want my old Prophecy GX's with Dirty Fingers back. Today I'd have to pay *more* for a guitar with inferior pickups, and then have to pay to buy the pickups I want. Fuck that noise.

@@ehsanhaq155 You can still buy the pick-ups separate, but it's not the same. I remember playing the GXs at GC. They are almost effortless to play. It was insane to me, because they felt closer to playing like a top end guitar, like a Gibson or PRS, than the thousand plus dollar Epiphone Elite series did. I remember the Prophecy line being around 600 dollars brand new, but I could be wrong I was a teen-ager back then lol
@@Mephilis78 yes yes Gibson is indeed selling their pickups now. But I wonder if they're anything like the old USA dirty fingers they put in back in 2006. I was just finishing college back then and I remember it being around 500/600 GBP (British pounds) when I got it. I can tell you, after all these years, it's in near perfect condition and plays like a dream. I don't know much about the Epiphone China factory but it's mad good stuff they make at the higher end.
i really like how budget workhorse guitars are getting more attention these days. i've modded some low and middle guitars into stellar rock machines over the years. surprising the shit out of people what they hear/feel when they play my guitar that they just snorted at, never got old for me. these days, there are lots of guitars that you don't even have to do more than adjustments, and they're somewhat reasonably priced compared to the rest of the market. that's soo cool. also, the 4 panel intro is pretty epic.
Growing up i was always under the impression that good guitar = $$$ and it is nice to see that with rhings like LTD, shecter etc you can have good without cashing in your 401k
@@Fraeg there was a time when that's how it was. modern manufacturing, relatively inexpensive shipping, and countries with shitty labor laws have really been a boon for guitar players.
If you're not getting the pinch harmonic, you might be trying it it the wrong spot. Scale length changes where it is. Your hand seems to be naturally sitting further away from the neck pickup on the Harley Benton, so try shifting back a bit on the Epiphone.

Hey Glen, this video could not have come out at a better time for me. I just got mine a few days ago, I'd been eyeing it for a couple of months now, and I love it so much. Extremely fun to play. Glad to see it getting your seal of approval, makes me feel even better about my purchase. Interestingly enough, I also had the same issue with the truss rod being extremely relaxed.
My main guitar is an Epiphone Les Paul Studio that I bought for $250 US back in 2018. I got it set up for a few different tunings over the years, and it’s by far my favorite guitar. I love it so much. If I had to choose, I’ll take Epiphone over Gibson any day.
The only difference is the hardware, Gibson kinda purposfully cripples the Epiphones with weaker pickups, but you can do a swap-out to Gibson pickups and have the best of both worlds. I own a Gibson Les Paul, and have given that advice to buy an Epiphone and swap out the hardware many times. Now you can get an Epiphone "CNC PRINTOUT" from china for even cheaper, as a "chibson".

@@nocturnal101ravenous6 Yeah I did that but one step further and just ordered the guitar I wanted from Chibson directly with instructions for what I wanted, and they made it custom for me, with "printouts" of epiphone/gibson files for signature series (fancy inlays) guitars combined together. Its an SG, Diablo body, with a left handed tony iommi signature fretboard upside down as a right handed freboard (crosses upside down). Its amazing. Needed ONE fret fixed, and of course new pickups if you DON'T want it to harmonic squeal every other note and feed back the instant you try to mute it. But you plan on replacing the pickups, people toss out the "alex lifeson" combo 498t 496R (weird combo using one high output alnico and one high output ceramic) in the Les Paul Axcesses and replace them so they're easily found on the used market for Like $100 for the set, I paid $110 for my set for that SG.

My Schecter was the same. Flawless. Plays like butter. The action is so good. I've bought basically nothing but Schecter since getting my 1st one in 2012. Just love them. Never been disappointed.

My first real "metal" guitar was a Schecter c6 deluxe, loved just about everything about it except for the cheapo licensed floyd rose. No matter who set it up the thing just would not stay in tune so I ended up trading it along with a couple of pedals for a Hellcat, which was a truly excellent guitar.
I own nearly every popular brand of guitar (over 100) and I have to say there is something truly different about Schecter guitars. They have a solidness and resonance that seems to trump all other guitars.
I can't explain it any other way. Especially their guitars with tune-o-matic string-through setups. They seem to have more bite and snap.
Does anyone remember the Futurama episode where Bender finds out he's fatally defective? They spend the rest of the episode looking for Inspector 5. Quality control issues are an Inspector 5 job.

I bought this guitar a few months ago, best purchase I ever made. The fishman pickups are really nice and it is so easy to play. I put a Floyd FRX on it too, but that was after market.

Big fan of this guitar. Love the looks, love the hardware, love the price. I've been really thinking of getting it for quite some time. If I could change one thing I would prefer a 25.5 scale (and maybe also the imput jack), but exept for that it's literally my perfect guitar.
Fun fact: when the V was invented in 58 it was Gibson’s attempt at entering… the country-western music market that was dominated by Fender of course. The thought was when you were standing you would put your left arm between the two parts sticking out to form the V with the guitar strapped up really high.

@@Douglas_I You have to know in 58 things we’re a lot different then. Gibson was the company making guitars for old farts, ok maybe that parts not different lol, because the only Gibson guitars that were selling were the jazz boxes. The les Paul was a commercial failure, rock n roll was new and considered to be a passing fad. Most working musicians playing live music at that time were either guys in jazz groups or country and western players. In 58, trying to venture out from jazz boxes to compete with fender in the realm of Western swing and country music would have made the most sense financially. It wasn’t the same world we live in today. So yeah the intent of the v was to make it more comfy for your strumming hand to blaze through those Western swing rhythm parts. Everyone thought it looked stupid, nobody did it and the v and explorers were also commercial flops. It’s funny that all the standard metal shapes started out as flops no one wanted until they hit pawn shops at half the price so the kids bought them to make rock n roll in the late 60’s.

It was super fun for me to see Glen checking out this guitar. I designed the voicing preamps in the pickups and bought the same model. It's rewarding when you work to try and make something good and people like it. Some nerdy details in case it's of interest, if you use the two pickups together in single coil mode (pull volume) you get hum cancelling and it's tuned to the resonant frequency of two P90's together. It's a cool tone IMHO.

I bought the Prophecy LP last year. The action was a mile off the fretboard and unplayable in my opinion. However, after a setup it plays like a dream snd every other aspect is flawless. You mentioned Schecter playability out of the box. I believe it's because they set them up in the USA before their final destination, whereas Epiphones come to you off the boat via whatever storage facility they went to when they arrived in the USA.
I absolutely LOVE my Prophecy.
I also love my Brent Hinds flying V and my last generation Iommi SG. Epiphone are crushing it!
I also got a prophecy LP last year. To me, it came out of the box perfectly playable. I haven't had to mess with the action at all since I got it. It stays perfectly in tune unless I hit the headstock on something😳. Locking tuners are great, and so are the Fishmans.
@@drakegoodrich6954 Maybe it's down to who does the final inspection before packaging. I wasn't so lucky. My action at the 12th was unplayable, and a couple of strings were wound like the tuners were not locking and the lock screws were backed all the way out. Whatever. Because of it I got a chance to try out a new shop/tech and I've taken him 2 others since. Once setup, my LP really plays wonderfully. Epiphone could have done better on a basic setup, but the build quality is phenomenal, regardless of price point (I paid $780). Had I paid double I might be upset about the setup, but still would have been happy because it's just a killer guitar.
The Prophecy guitars are great. I owned one 10 or so years ago. As much as I loved my 2012 Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom I used to own, the QC on all my Epiphones I've owned have been better than the one Gibson I’ve bought new.
I got this V for Christmas, and I'm a fairly new metal player. I'm glad I could find some advice from a more experienced player, so I really knew what kind of instrument I had. Thanks so much!

Guitar looks totally fine if you're into the classic V-style and feel. Unlike that Gibson, it is definitely worth the cash! Yeah the short scale length does really not help with pinch harmonics. My favorite guitar style of all time as a pragmatic player still is a modern superstrat type...these can do just about anything.

I own one of those in the yellow finish and love it. Mine came with some minor issues related to fret sprouting and wiring of the 9v connector, but I got em all fixed. I also moved the top strap button to behind the top of the body like the position of other traditional flying V guitars to help with the neck dive when standing. It sounds absolutely incredible. It's a metal machine.
Eh, this is why I just get cables that have a right angle on one end, straight on the other. That way I can just switch them around depending on what guitar I'm using (I have PRS singlecuts and Fender strats). Works well for pretty much any situation.
Really enjoying the sound demo. To me the riffs you are playing sound like “Flying V riffs” meaning (in my opinion anyway) speed metal riffs.

I was actually looking at the Epiphone and Gibson websites and it makes me wonder about how Gibson are still in business. (yes I know Epiphone and now my beloved MESA are keeping them afloat) They just sell the same shitty boring guitars and don't do anything different unless it's an overpriced "limited edition". Atleast Epiphone actually have a few decent choices.

I played one of these in March. It was used at Guitar Center. I felt like I could summon the apocalypse with that thing!! 24 frets with 24 3/4 scale length and the neck carve feels damn near perfect to me! Love the review!
Hi glenn... Really a huge fan of your work and honest banter. I got an epiphone 1959 les paul limited edition and I'd really love if you'd cover it some day in the near future. I've been listening mostly praise for that instrument but I think you're the only one I can trust when it comes to blunt, in-your-face truth. Personally, i like it's feel and overall build quality. Those prophecy guitars are pretty nice. I've had a bunch in my hands and they are worth the retail price. And don't worry too much about the packing, Ive seen $1500 Hagstroms and $1200 Schecters not even wrapped in plastic or bubble wrap, just straight up cardboard.
In 2019 (edit! 2015 - stupid iPad keyboard) I bought a secondhand Gibson 1997 Les Paul Studio for a thousand bucks on consignment at my local music store. I absolutely love the guitar and it’s seen a ton of jams and a few shows, but if I were ever in the market for another Gibson style you had better bet your stash of shirtless Glenn pics I wouldn’t be buying another Gibson.
Same here, have I think a 2016 studio, maybe 2017? I don't remember, the point is I love that guitar. With the benefit of hindsight though, I realize that I was just a dumb kid that wanted the name of the headstock. If I'm ever in the market for something like a Gibson it's going to be some kind of high-end Epiphone

I kinda love it. However i would rather a version without the fluence pickups (i don't really like active pickups). But for the price, the whole prophecy series are great.
big thing to keep in mind on the pinch harmonics is the pickups themselves. I've found that active pickups make it much easier to play PHs as a standalone noise, but because they're higher output and more sensitive than passive pickups it can be more difficult to get the PHs to shine through when playing them as part of a riff if your string muting technique isn't quite spot on.
Give us a blast of One Shot At Glory in the next guitar review. I had an epiphone explorer for years. It had a retrofit locking nut and whammy bridge with fine tuners. It wasn't a Floyd because you strung it through the body and kept the ball of the string. Always put super light Ernie Ball 8s on it and was so easy to do huge bends and wide vibrato on it. Probably needed a major setup when I sold it back to the guy who I bought it off but I got great use out of it. (Edit: point being, epiphone can make decent guitars). I'd make a couple of changes to the strap lock positions of that V you have to ensure a high headstock playing position standing up. My hands aren't suited to playing low slung guitars with neck dive. But it looks like it was almost worth the money you paid for it.
Not a flying V fan but that's probably one of the best looking V i see in a while, sounds good also

I purchased an older Prophecy EX Les Paul new a few years back and had always been a rock solid guitar holds tune perfectly, not too long ago I got the Gibson B-2 Flying V for double the price and I was somewhat disappointed to see problems with the paint and dents already on it plus it will barely stay in tune for a song! Will definitely be going Epiphone for my next guitar as clearly the Gibson logo on a guitar represents very little now…
I’ve seen countless RUclips videos where people replace the pickups and hardware on Epiphones and they play better than any modern Gibsons. I did the same with my Goth Explorer with Duncan Nazgul and Sentient.

I’m all about the guitar straps, and each guitar I buy gets something specific to it. Then I’ll walk around and figure if I can handle dropping it down low and still play comfortably. Then when I’m sitting down with it I let it hang in that same position, so no matter if you’re standing or sitting you’re comfortable with it. Congratulations Glenn. Sounds great.

Hey Glen, you should check out the Kramer Nite-V, it's in the Gibson family of products and they have one for $399 with a Floyd. It'd be interesting to see how the most budget friendly V in Gibsons owned brands compared to one of their most expensive
I got lucky and bought a used Schecter Omen off Craigslist when I first started playing. I've bought and sold many guitars since then but I still have the Schecter. And it's so nice that I bought a Schecter Banshee Mach 6 and DUDE.... IT'S SICK!!! Except for that stupid howling squelching screeching sustainiac pickup which has since been replaced. But seriously, for $1500 that Banshee is unbelievable. 5 piece neck with two strips of that purple wood, neck through construction, SS frets, crazy low action, plays so well. Schecter is the best value and quality of any guitar manufacturer without a doubt. Cheers man, keep them videos coming!!

I have the les Paul model and really digging it. Loving the v and am thinking I need one of each model from the prophecy line in black of course. Thank you for the review and I couldn’t recommend these guitars enough if somebody’s looking for a modern version of these models at a price that won’t have you selling a kidney to get it. Edit note: re-watching the review and think it’s fantastic seeing the pick dust when you did the close-up of the neck pick up, definitely shows the amount of time you put into playing before continuing the review.
About the pinch harmonics and fluence pickup system. There is a "mode switch" that is optional (obviously not installed here) and you get a mini toggle that essentially changes the frequency response across 3 modes. I had this setup on my bass and let me tell you...if you can do a little wiring, its the best 2 bucks and drilling you'll ever spend. The default mode (no toggle) focuses more on mid range and lead, but is not necessarily full range. The 2nd (alt mode) from the switch is scooped....basically analogous to a metal zone (bad in humbucker mode), and 3rd (alt mode) is like a combination of the 1st and second - full range. Now thats the mode you want to use. Some of the 2nd mode works pretty good with the single coils engaged, more jazz focused.
I might be wrong with the sequence since this is how I setup my wiring and switch pattern. But yeah, the as-is setup is losing out on two entire modes!!

That guitar looks soooooo good! Block inlays without the triangular inlays in them would’ve looked better, though.

I cannot thank you enough for doing this review. I have over 20 guitars, no Gibsons, but this makes me consider looking in to this Epiphone. I have always wanted a Flying V. I am also considering a Jackson. If given the choice, which one would you suggest?

I bought an Epi Les Paul Classic honey burst last year and I’m loving it. Beautiful guitar and sounds great.

It has a LOT to do with the speakers. The EVH/Hempback combo are 90% of it.
I have an Epiphone Les Paul from 20 years ago. It was built that well. After seeing and hearing that V, I think it would make sense to buy that bad boy.
