    Awesome video I just purchased one of these rigs yesterday. I have some troubleshooting to do the only time I hear anything is on FM mode. Thankfully there's a lot of content out there about them I haven't even opened her up yet I need to get the compressor going to blow out the dust. I payed 250 seems a little bit excessive for the age but then again good quality product built in Japan.

      It is a great rig. The plastic trimmer capacitors (From what I recall....) are a common problem and I believe the replacements are available from Icom or some of the electronic suppliers. I still fire mine up for SKN, or Straight Key Night, on 1/1 on some years to make sure it still works and make a couple contacts. Good luck @brandon.

    Great video, there are so many really easy mods and repairs that can be done to these rigs. I now know why mine starts out at 14.100 every time, but not for much longer 😃.
    Thanks and 73 de KC3NHE!

    735 my favourite rig. Pulled out of storage recently and same problem. Also did you re-cap that radio ? Thanks for the video. 73's from VK3

      Hi @Darrin - The only-re-capping was the replacement of the plastic trimmer caps with the ceramic a dozen years ago... When I went in for the battery = the battery was the only thing we touched. Worked for SKN 2021 ~1 year later.

    Thanks for posting this video. Now I know what to expect when it comes time to replace the battery in my IC-735. Did you purchase the replacement battery from ICOM? 73!

      hello @KX4UL - No these were from azn $3.60 for 8 of them, I am still depleting the stock - 'tabbed' CR2032. Good luck!

      @@JayUJay - I get my CR2032 batteries from Amazon too. Looks like your batteries had the legs/tabs already on them. I didn't know you could get them like that. Thanks for the reply...73!

    I fitted a new battery to my 735, but it's not working, I checked polarity and all the obvious things, but no go. I'm wondering now has the memory chip gone !

      Oh man, That is too bad. Same symptoms as before the repair attempt? (The battery may not be the correct repair?)

      I think it was done on this thing, there is plenty of online info about that mod to this rig. I'll be sure to record it, if I make that check in to my '735.

    Quick question does anybody know what the short grey jumper cable is for? And what ports it plugs into? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance 73s

    • @JayUJay
      @JayUJay  Год назад +1

      On the back? It routes the antenna to the receiver. You need that in there! That port is used to jump the receiver to the antenna relay. This port could be used to feed the antenna (split?) to a SDR, for example, so you could add a panadaptor. It should be between ANT OUT and RX ANT IN.

      @@JayUJay thank you bro. I believe that's what I did when I read the labels are the ports logically that's what made sense

    it is important to solder a temporary 3v source before you disconnect. otherwise you have to send the board to icom for reprogramming. the memory is not preserved without at least 1volt.

    • @JayUJay
      @JayUJay  4 года назад +1

      First I've heard of that one @Ed McG. If the battery is dead, and requiring replacement, one would expect the 3v would not be there & requiring a battery replacement..... no? Having this radio since 1988 and this is the second battery change after symptoms of the dead battery surfaced. I supposed a good practice to bootstrap a 3v supply before removing this makes sense- I probably will not incorporate the 3v supplement during the next battery change in 15+ years :)

      Sorry if my reply sounded kind of terse. I really appreciate your video as I get ready to do the batteries for my 735 and r71a rcvr.
      where did those last 20 yrs go?
      here is the link from ICOM Canada. www.icomcanada.com/techbulletin/tb1/ram_card.htm with some pictures on where to piggyback a temporary 3v supply. My last go round with these batteries also.
