    Perhaps 10-years ago I bought several of those pre-amp relays for my IC-730 and never got around to installing one. The reason is that I had popped the cap off the relay, gave it a half-second flood with DS-50 and it has worked perfectly since... no need to replace the relay (so far). I'd planned to keep the original installed anyway until it just had to be replaced. Recently I hooked the the radio back up - no RX or TX. Turned out to be those infamous J2 and J3 solder points on the RF Board. I not only resoldered them, but soldered in some stiff, reinforcing jumpers to the adjacent solder points. All well now, expect that the S-Meter doesn't budge on receive; R42/42 adjustments have no effect. I'll save that project for the next time. Thanks for the videos.

    I have the 100w version, hamfest repair special. I have a lot of reciever issues, fixed the pre-amp relay already. Have other problems to track down. I will enjoy this series.

    I enjoy your radio repair videos. I also like how you break them up to keep the time of each reasonable.

    I'm looking forward to this series... Earlier this year I repaired a broken Kenwood TS-430s that I picked up for $50 at a hamfest. Ultimately, the problem in it was someone did some sloppy work in the PA section and shorted out the thermistor with conductive thermal paste, so it always thought the PA was overheating.

      I rebuilt a ts-430s, nice radio.

    I LOVE those vfd frequency displays. They never should have gotten rid of those. The older ICOM microphones looked like a cheesy Star Wars toy. I suppose it's how they work that matters. Thanks for showing!

    Must have Hue bulbs? I just posted in a ham radio FB group that I figured they were noisy, but hadn't realized how noisy until I saw a waterfall quiet when I kicked off the lights. Noisy noisy. Also, love love love your videos.

    That's the same mic that came with my IC-751, so it is probably older. I had a very similar model which was 2m only but all mode. It was very good. My IC-703 is good too. 73 and good luck with the fix.

    Hey it has the WARC bands! Looks like a fun one.

    A WARC-capable radio! Can't be that old, right? Oops, that happened in the early 1980's!? I remember when that happened and seems like I'm old, not so much the radio... I have an IC-705 which looks like the little-brother to your IC-7300. Sure is nice having that big waterfall display right in your face!

    Sir, since you are a technician, I have two IC-735's that were both in good working order that used to be my father in-law's. Now, both just turns ON with one half a display, the other with no diplay at all and I can't hear anything since both were in storage since he died more than 15 years ago. Would there be a chance both will work again if I recap both of them? Thank you sir and all the best.

    Have two icom 745's, one I bought new and the other much later. The one I bought new lightning tickled it, thing it is the rf power section, receive works fine. The one I bought used was in very good condition, every add on has been installed, fm module, filters, electric keyer. It was in storage, dry and safe, put up an antenna about a month ago. SSB works fine, but CW is not getting to the audio output and AM general coverage isn't working correctly. I suspect tarnished contacts? Sprayed some contact cleaner on the PB tuning, notch filter buttons, the three on the upper right on the front, this brought it up a little, but not much. Have schematics and pictures as per the manual. Any suggestions on cleaning relays or other controls. N5QDM. thanks. 73's from someone who will be 73 in five days.

    Interesting, wonder if the 100W PA is in there but somehow limited or if it's missing the relevant parts and just running on the drivers.

    A WAY out in left field question., at least with respect to transceiver repair.
    I'm in the process of building a DAC on a Raspberry PI with several hats.
    One of the boards calls for a pair of Z-foil resistors(Pure Unobtainium). Would you know if this is Hi/Fi Audio-world bullshit
    or something necessary? I'm 78 years old and I know what my ears can hear.
    My top end is about 13k these days with a dropout at 4k in one ear.
    At what level is resistor noise something to worry about?

    • @IMSAIGuy
      @IMSAIGuy  8 месяцев назад

      z-foil is still around but for your application I would categorize it as BS

    • @jcisn
      @jcisn 8 месяцев назад

      The Board is a ProtoDAC TDA1387 X8. The through holes for the two Z-foil resistors are labeled U1 and U2 which is a bit off-putting.
      Still... All and all... It looks impressive.
      Despite its lack of Z-foils.
      I don't think my ears will know the difference.
