Just bought my first AR today - and my biggest anxiety was breaking it down and remembering all of the steps. This just alleviated all of my nerves. Thanks so much!
Same here, 85. I just bought a Colt ce2000. When I got it home the thought of stripping it and cleaning it made me think, "Ermergerrrrrd, I hope I can get this right." lol Thank you for the videos!
Brandon Jarvis same here! I am waiting on my first AR15 to arrive so I’m trying to learn as much as I can before it arrives! This is by far the clearest video I’ve watched on cleaning and lubing. Actually being able to see what he’s doing makes a big difference.
hands down one of the greatest video on how to clean an AR with all those closeup shoots to show all those parts for newbies. not sure why he stopped posting as this channel is amazing.
I purchased an AR a few months ago, and I’ve only shot it during one session at the range. I never cleaned it or disassembled it before but decided “what the heck, it’s on RUclips”. Your video was awesome for me as a beginner and first time, I even learned some lubricants for the parts. Awesome video sir and I appreciated it
As a first time owner of an AR15, this has been very helpful. I need to clean it and up until now was very hesitant to take it apart. You made it seem very simple and I did mine along with you. Now I can go shoot and know that I can clean my own gun. You ROCK!!
I have watched at least 6 videos today showing how to field strip my AR. This is the only one that showed the process clearly enough that this novice can follow. Thank you so much!
@@JONDAVIS111 Just purely wondering... why did you put 'clean weapons' in quotes? Did you just run a swab through the barrel and call it good enough, I'm not sure why you'd need this tutorial otherwise. P.S Hoping to be future Army Paratrooper. (Maybe).
@@tillman002000 lol tired of seeing them thats understandable. Like people who work at certain types of food places never want to eat that type of food because they're so tired of being around it
Quality camera, lighting, sounds . Very clear walkthrough on break down . Very patient on the time you took. Thank you very much for you time. So many crap videos out there . This was the very best one by far. You made alot of anxiety go away for alot of people. Thank again. By the way very looking looking ar 15. Beautiful
As a first time owner of an AR-15, I reciprocate all the fine comments left by other new owners… this was a simple, basic and detailed explanation on field stripping an AR-15, thank you…
So glad you specifically said to fully extend the bolt in order to reinsert it into the upper receiver. This is often left out on so many of these cleaning videos. Very good video.
I'd like to add this. You may want to begin cleaning the buffer spring and buffer tube. Clearing out some of that carbon will take away some of the friction on each round fired and take away a little bit of that recoil that we all hate so terribly much. A good way to test this is fully assemble your AR/M4. Pull back the charging handle slowly and if it sounds like there's dirt inside the buffer tube or on the spring, even after being cleaned, lube the spring, not a lot but the entire spring. then re-test the charging handle and see the difference. I promise it makes a huge difference. P.S. clean the trigger assembly, it does get very dirty.
Wade Johnson : In the two years that I've had my ar I never thought about cleaning the buffer but I'm going to give it a go and see what the difference it makes. Thanks
Man this vid is well over 2 years old and it keeps on giving! I just bought a Mossberg MMR and had so much anxiety over breaking it down to clean the manufacturing and shipping gunk off of it. I watched two other vids and only yours got me through returning the charging handle and the carrier bolt assembly to their rightful place using your technique. The other guys say "now just return the charging handle and bolt assembly group back together" I'm like what?! How?! It was a struggle until you said, " It's very simple" and it was. I really want to say thanks for teaching me not just showing me how to field strip my AR. Keep up the education of us neophytes!
Nearly a Decade ago you made this video, being a previous owner of AR15s. I'm getting back into it after being out of the game. This was a great refresher thank you.
as a master armorer, there are two tips I give people for cleaning the M16/AR15 series rifles. Both of which I developed in the Army as an Armorer in a direct support unit (disabled vet w/18 years service and 37 years with the AR15/M16 series) for clean and lube I use CLP. to clean the gas tube in the upper receiver I used a cotton string that's looped over the gas tube. I start with some CLP on the string and you simply pull one side of the string and then the other. this removes all the carbon from the outer gas tube (important for automatic weapons and especially for cleaning after using blanks) the inner gas tube is cleaned using pipe cleaners. Now I used to mess with my guys when they turned in the rifles after cleaning. I would look at them and ask "is it clean?" (I always checked closely no matter what) but for the guys that said IT WAS CLEAN, I would always pull out a pipe cleaner and within 2 seconds pull out black crud (and no cheating) my two favorite crud locations were (for full stock rifles) the buttstock drain hole, and the three small holes next to the gas tube in the upper receiver. I had a 100% success rate in those two spots finding crud. what was the second cleaning tip? Go to the store and find buy a horsehair paintbrush (4 inches) nothing will work but a real horsehair brush.. (synthetic paintbrushes will not work) this is how ALL my weapons were oiled. once the brush has been used a couple times yo can oil a rifle with 4 drops of oil (plus what's on the brush) what you want is to use as little oil as possible. when done correctly you will have ZERO oil running, only a matte finish with the slightest hint of a glossy shine. basically, it's dry brushing oil onto the metal surfaces. this will provide the best protective coat of oil for storage and for use. (works great for the bolt carrier too).
couldnt ask for a better vid for field strippin and cleaning the ar 15 upper I really appreciate the time all u guys take out to show us who dont know a lot or anything about our fire arms/GOD BLESS AMERICANS TO PROTECT AND SERVE OURSELVES 1st and 2nd amendments rights!
The last time I played with field striping a AR / M-16 was back in the early 80’s when I was in the Army. It all came back to me once you got into it. A great refresher for me. Thank you.
When I was in the Army in the 60's I was certain the Mattel-16 was a flawed and passing fad. I'd never guess I'd be in old age and watching a cleaning video on one. I really figured they would have been scrap-metal'd out by now. My detractors say the rifle have "changed" but I still hear about entire squads in contact with an enemy with jammed rifles (changing the name to M4 changes nothing). This is the best AR15/M15/M4 video on RUclips. Yes, clean, clean, clean, clean. Better yet, keep your knife, bayonet, pistol and frags very close, and remember above all that AK's/SKSs etc don't jam even when they haven't been cleaned. Bought an SKS new for $69 back in the 80's as a test; it's had over five cases (5,000 rds) through it and never seen a drop or oil or any cleaning and never failed once. Any Mattel enthusiasts got one of those? Thank you again, and keep those cleaning videos coming.
I'm not a Mattel enthusiast but I will say my AR-15 on the civilian side or my m-4 in the military has failed me proper upkeep will do the trick every time
Any type failure when your ass is on the line is unacceptable. I like the platform, however I could see ones perspective changing under the circumstance you describe. I respect and appreciate everyone that has served in harms way. God bless !
mnpd3 yes sir, I bought 4 of them in the 70s at a gun show when the first started importing them. I too had to trust my life to gene stoners pos in 67/68. Made friends with our company armorer and got myself a cut down m14 . Had it until I was hit at lz hardcore February 1 1968. Gave it to one of the guys in my squad. We called it the pee bringer. You're absolutely right about the sks. Damn fine rifle. Mine are all Russian with new norinco bolts.(no more slam fire) 2 of them have been modified to take ak magazines and have "extra" trigger groups for rock n roll if needed. I think with me, my two sons and son in law make a pretty formidable fire team regards, and welcome home
Thank you for taking time out of your day to help educate others! My dad is taking me to pick one up in a few weeks your videos are very informative and easy to follow.
Yesterday I got my very first AR15. Today I took it to the range and put 40 rounds down range. This evening, following this video, I stripped, cleaned, and reassembled my AR15. It COULD NOT have been any easier! Thank you for your slow pace and great close-up shots. I was nervous prior, envisioning getting a bunch of parts laid out and not being able to put them back together. Now I know I could strip it and reassemble it with no problem. With a little practice, I'd probably be able to do it in the dark. But, why would I want to....? :D Thank you for this great video and information!
Short, sweet, and to the point. Thanks for posting this! One question though - - I observed that you put lubricant in the two holes in the bolt carrier. Aren't these gas relief ports? Should they really be lubed? Thanks again for a concise, instructive video for us AR newbies!
Newbie here - just picked up an AR today and I searched RUclips to find a good illustration on how to clean and lube it. Your video is very helpful. I think it is all I will need. Thanks
Rob Scha Nay Nay That depends on a lot of variables. What ammo were you using, what materials is your barrel made of, and what kind of gas system to you have in your rifle? generally, an AR is good for 500-1000 rounds before needing any cleaning, but a piston system, coated barrel, and quality ammo can push that number up quite a bit.
Rob Scha Nay Nay DPMS is a solid manufacturer, so the actual rifle should give you little to no trouble. If I may give a recommendation on ammo, anything bearing the names Hornady, Federal, or Remington will make your experience much more enjoyable. Just steer clear of Tula. Welcome to the family; we take good care of our own.
Wow! 2013??? I'm on my second AR, but it's been years. So I went through the channels to seek help on getting rid of all that factory grease and clean it. Finally ran across your channel that actually shows a great methodical approach to breaking down the AR. Thanks so much!!
Great video however I would add the following steps and thoughts. 1. Use that Q-Tip wetted with Ballistol to clean the Bolt Face and Extractor. 2. Use Ballistol and a Chamber Brush to clean those Lugs in the Barrel'x chamber. 3. Try Motul Synthetic oil since it "creeps" whereas Mobile 1 is repelled from the Steel parts. Thanks, Dave M.
I got my first AR15 after a lifetime shooting nothing but bolt actions and I have to say people like you are a godsend. Thanks for all the free advice.
This video really helped me a lot man! Thanks for putting this up. I just bought my first ar-15 and didn't even know how to field strip it until I saw this video!
After watching NSZ85, I ordered a 3 pack of Ballistol on Amazon a few weeks back and cleaned and lubed my weapons yesterday even though they did not need a cleaning. A lot easier to clean this way and I like the way the wrack feels and sounds as it slides on my hand gun and same with the bolt carrier. Seems to glide with noticably less friction. Ballistol will be my choice going forward.
+M Shakir What do you mean by 'permit to purchase regulated firearm?' I'm not trying to be an ass; I'm genuinely curious. All I needed to buy my AR yesterday was my ID.
Apprenticetothesith In Maryland. semi-autos and handguns are under the category "regulated firearms" almost all semi-autos are banned except if they have a heavy barrel (which they don't define). So in order for me to buy my springfield xdm (first gun) I have to take a class (275) get fingerprinted (54-ish) and submit an application for a Handgun Qualifying License (50). then wait 30 days (mine took 21) before I could buy the gun (490). then wait 7 more days before I can pick it up.
M Shakir That seems....completely asinine. And un-American. You have my sincere condolences and I hope after this most recent election, you have more pro-gun legislatures to fix that gross breech of the Constitution.
Awesome video! Just bought my AR and needed to educate myself on cleaning and lubing my gun. I watched various videos, and thank God I found yours! Thank you so much for being detailed, and speaking slowly enough for me to stay in pace with you. Great video! Thank you, and God bless you!
Just bought a brand new AR today, tomorrow morning I'll clean it and head to the range - can't wait to put some rounds through it! Thanks for this video, takes the guess work out!
I was in the military in the early 80's, and used to be able to field strip and clean/lube my M-16 and reassemble it in two minutes flat.....just recently bought my first AR, and was a bit nervous about breaking it down....been a lot of years, thx for the refresher course....
The promo code saves 20% but then the high shipping cost adds on about 50% charge of the product price at a minimum. So then it's much cheaper to just buy it from Amazon. Well at least I tried to buy it from their website
Just cleaned my AR for the first time, and man, this video made it so much easier. It was fairly nerve-wracking disassembling and reassembling it, but I quickly realized that there is no "wrong" way to follow the process. 10/10 would struggle with putting in retaining pin again.
Never apply lubricant in any of the holes in the bolt carrier or any other holes. The holes are gas relief ports and they are never to be plugged with oil build up..
Are there any other places that strictly prohibit the use of oil? Sry seen your reply and I want to make sure and get the correct advice. Thanks ahead of time!!
This is probably the best video there is online I've watched 4 or 5 now but this one left me confident enough to take my gun apart for the 1st time thanks man
Thank you. Just loaded and ejected a bunch of rounds to cycle my first AR and this video helped me diagnose my issue. Not only was my bolt dry (i lubed the carrier but didn't know to remove the bolt to lube it) but then putting it all back together i realized by not letting the bolt drop by its own spring tension (letting it go gently like i would indoors with my glock) it wasn't forcing my rounds fully into the chamber, so they weren't being extracted either. Sorry for the essay, just wanted to say thanks for helping me understand the mechanics/physics of what I'm working with
Great video can't ask for more.Idk something about watching and cleaning guns is so satisfying idk maybe it's just me and I love ballistol especially the smell
Didn’t really clean much of anything. Stuck that “clean” bolt back in that dirty ass upper receiver bet it looked exactly the same as before he “cleaned” it. And that charging handle was pretty gross too. But he only noticed the wear. Lmao
This helped me to fully understand and take down my New Sig Sauer AR-15 and clean it before I go shooting it for the first time. I really appreciate you...it really helped me out
Lightningmicro here’s a reason not to lube the bolt, faster carbon build up. Here’s another reason not to oil the gas ports, faster carbon build up......🤦♂️
In the Marines, we used a hand brush (tooth rush looking) that takes all the carbon off. Using just a t shirt makes me feel like you're not taking all that carbon on.... that being said, there are going to be critics for everything. You did a great job with the video. Thank you!
naz85 - THANKS - This guy is so much clearer than most other utubers. He doesn't mumble. He gets his thoughts lined up before he starts. He has knowledge of the subject (not all utubers do). The only suggestion I have is work on a clear table, preferably white, without all your supplies and equipment around the edges of the workpiece.
Thanks for the clear video. I just ordered my first ar15 and I’m learning all I can before it comes in. I shoot pistols a lot but after renting one of these at the range, I was instantly hooked. Looking forward to shooting, cleaning, and maybe upgrading some key parts.
Probably sound like a lot of the other comments, but I just got my 1st ar and was nervous to take it apart to clean it but thank you for your video. I followed along and it was way easier than I was thinking it would be. Thank you.
This scene scares me and remind me. I've been fired upon within a 10 yard radius in a CQB situation on April 9, 2002 and was grazed in the left upper forearm, and will never forget. No one else with me lost there life thankfully and God willing but it changed My life.
Even though I served in the Army for a number of years, it has been quite a number of years since I have disassemble the bolt and carrier group from an AR-15/M-16 rifle. This short video was exactly what I needed to refresh my memory. Thanks.
Watched about 3 videos before I got here and even though they talked what to do, you couldn't see what they were doing. You did a great job letting me see... Thanks for sharing the video.
Nearly a half decade after you made this video, it's still helping folks like me maintain our firearms responsibly. Thank you Sir!

Everyone asks where I find AR-15 stuff in stock or where I order from, so here you are: goo.gl/GKqpCC
Is it necessary to clean the rifle after each time at the range or what is the frequency recommended?
Rob Scha Nay Nay That depends on a lot of variables.
James Penn Hell yeah brother!
I resisted black guns for years, finally bought an AR15, really enjoying learning my new toy.Great video, Thank You 53 years gun owner...
I have never had an issue while using Ballistol for years.
I’ve been around guns my whole life. Got my first AR yesterday. This video gave me a whole new perspective. Very Confident now!
The only part that is missing is a Drill Sgt. screaming in my face. XD
Metoo
😂
I have to say, this and your basics of what to know with an AR-15 are two of the most thorough and well explained videos Ive seen on ARs. Thanks
I just got my permit to purchase regulated firearm your videos have been a huge help.
I am glad I could help!
+M Shakir What do you mean by 'permit to purchase regulated firearm?' I'm not trying to be an ass; I'm genuinely curious. All I needed to buy my AR yesterday was my ID.
Maybe he is not from US. In different countries there are different laws.
Just received the tool from Amazon - Note: it is available as a kit with a handle also from Amazon, just FYI. Wish I had known this.
Just purchased first AR, so thank you for the video. Very helpful.
As a first time owner, this was invaluable. Thank You
amazing. just got my AR in and field stripped, cleaned, and lubed it with no instruction other than this video.
I clean the buffer tube and the place behind the trigger lot of carbon collects there.
Just bought a brand new AR today, tomorrow morning I'll clean it and head to the range - can't wait to put some rounds through it! Thanks for this video, takes the guess work out!
Thanks for making this video. Now, to go clean my first AR, a S&W M&P 15 Sport, that I just fired at the range for the first time.
Hey! That's my first AR I just bought me as well. Great minds really do think alike.
Late to the party but same 😍
I was in the military in the early 80's, and used to be able to field strip and clean/lube my M-16 and reassemble it in two minutes flat.....just recently bought my first AR, and was a bit nervous about breaking it down....been a lot of years, thx for the refresher course....
The promo code saves 20% but then the high shipping cost adds on about 50% charge of the product price at a minimum.
So then it's much cheaper to just buy it from Amazon.
Well at least I tried to buy it from their website
What's the promo code ?

Finally I found someone that knows how to set up a camera for this type of "how to" videos. Thanks!
Can't wait till 2023 when I can finally get an ar at a reasonable price!
If you can still buy them!
I wouldn't count on it haha
Thanks very much for your time. My son recently purchased a rifle and I’ll make sure he checks out this video.
Yeeeessss! This is an EXCELLENT tutorial. A masterpiece! How about one on ammo grains etc. Struggling to get the skinny on 300 Blackout ammo.
Just cleaned my AR for the first time, and man, this video made it so much easier. It was fairly nerve-wracking disassembling and reassembling it, but I quickly realized that there is no "wrong" way to follow the process.
10/10 would struggle with putting in retaining pin again.
Woo! Just bought my first AR-15. Colt 6920 Trooper. 16" 1:7in barrel. ALL BLACK.
Nice gun.
This video is still helping people 7 years later. Thank you
Never apply lubricant in any of the holes in the bolt carrier or any other holes. The holes are gas relief ports and they are never to be plugged with oil build up..
Can you please give a specific time marker where he does this So I can be sure to not make the same mistake?
@@mikep9289 I think it's about 12:30 where he begins spraying oil..
I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw the holes being sprayed lol. Other than that, it’s really a great video.
Are there any other places that strictly prohibit the use of oil? Sry seen your reply and I want to make sure and get the correct advice. Thanks ahead of time!!
I appreciate you going slow and not skipping steps, I am new at this. Thank you.
bought my first ar15 today!
thx 4 ur vids!! :)
Awesome! Congrats!
I just purchased an AR-15. I never owned one before but I found your video very easy to follow. Thanks!
+Keith Rupp Congrats on being a new owner!
That was from about 500 rounds.
This is probably the best video there is online I've watched 4 or 5 now but this one left me confident enough to take my gun apart for the 1st time thanks man
Thank you, I appreciate that. Thanks for watching!
+BedRockBadgerTv You are not the only one to tell me that. I have quite a few viewers that have told me they find it therapeutic :-)
+nsz85 I find watching porn is very therapeutic as well
Thinking about getting an AR and this was very helpful and informative. Can never have too much knowledge on firearms safety and maintenance
So other than spraying Ballistol in there, you don't clean the chamber?
Didn’t really clean much of anything. Stuck that “clean” bolt back in that dirty ass upper receiver bet it looked exactly the same as before he “cleaned” it. And that charging handle was pretty gross too. But he only noticed the wear. Lmao
Just picked up my s&w m&p 15 a week ago. Only 100 rounds so far, haven’t field stripped it yet but this helps me out. Thanks
Loving the video series, you have a good way of explaining things. Thanks!
This is my favorite video to take down, clean and reassemble my DD AR 15!
It’s very clear, great closeups and well done!!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
trigger brand?
This helped me to fully understand and take down my New Sig Sauer AR-15 and clean it before I go shooting it for the first time.
I really appreciate you...it really helped me out
I don't see any reason not to lube the bolt some before installing it in the carrier.
Lightningmicro here’s a reason not to lube the bolt, faster carbon build up. Here’s another reason not to oil the gas ports, faster carbon build up......🤦♂️
Chris Robbins Carbon builds up quicker on a dry bolt and is harder to clean
This is the most helpful video for those like me who are taking apart their AR 15 for the first time.
mr. rogers of ar15,love your vids. thank you
PTL MU.....Remember the weapons of our warfare are not carnal.....
In the Marines, we used a hand brush (tooth rush looking) that takes all the carbon off. Using just a t shirt makes me feel like you're not taking all that carbon on.... that being said, there are going to be critics for everything. You did a great job with the video. Thank you!
Saved to favorites. thank you for the tutorial. Merry Christmas.
Great video - clear and well-spoken with just the right amount of info, no crappy background music or other distractions.
Let me show you how I almost lose parts. Just set them right here on a tshirt, then pick the shirt up...
lol a realistic post
Erik Larson dumb comment left wing nut job.
@@dallas5374 No call to be redundant.
naz85 - THANKS - This guy is so much clearer than most other utubers. He doesn't mumble. He gets his thoughts lined up before he starts. He has knowledge of the subject (not all utubers do). The only suggestion I have is work on a clear table, preferably white, without all your supplies and equipment around the edges of the workpiece.
Great video for beginners
@@delfinosotelo2335------ exactly
Very thorough man well presented.
***** Thanks!
Thanks for the clear video. I just ordered my first ar15 and I’m learning all I can before it comes in. I shoot pistols a lot but after renting one of these at the range, I was instantly hooked. Looking forward to shooting, cleaning, and maybe upgrading some key parts.
Man you are the best ever l swear. Thank you a lot bro
Probably sound like a lot of the other comments, but I just got my 1st ar and was nervous to take it apart to clean it but thank you for your video. I followed along and it was way easier than I was thinking it would be. Thank you.
I like your videos, very informative and friendly
Enrique Miranda Thank you! I try :)
just bought my first AR and know nothing about it. Your video is great. No nonsense and clear. i will refer to it again.
Thanks for the video. Very easy to follow. Take care.
biblesnbarbells You are welcome. I am glad you enjoyed it!
Sounds good.
Great help. I am debating buying an AR, but have hesitated because I dont know how easy it would be to clean. Your video alleviated that concern.
Perfect, even drunk🍺😜 you made sense to me. Thank you bro.
Wonderful video I was thinking of buying an AR but I was worried the takedown and cleaning might be hard
This scene scares me and remind me. I've been fired upon within a 10 yard radius in a CQB situation on April 9, 2002 and was grazed in the left upper forearm, and will never forget. No one else with me lost there life thankfully and God willing but it changed
My life.
The rifle being cleaned scares you?
Even though I served in the Army for a number of years, it has been quite a number of years since I have disassemble the bolt and carrier group from an AR-15/M-16 rifle. This short video was exactly what I needed to refresh my memory. Thanks.
"I like to give it a nice whack" -nsz85 2013
Watched about 3 videos before I got here and even though they talked what to do, you couldn't see what they were doing. You did a great job letting me see... Thanks for sharing the video.
