Did a double-take when I saw TGB posted this video instead of you, and did another double-take seeing you as the top comment on a video from this channel lmao
I love Charlie's recent output of smaller reviews and recommendations like this that allow him to shed light on some obscure titles like this. There are so many neat little hidden gems that don't necessarily need an hour-long analysis dedicated to them.
Even within the bullet hell subgenre, Progear is such a unique game and definitely one of CAVEs more experimental games. Turning bullets into jewels never gets old!
I've been following you for years and i always wished you'd get into cave shmups, this makes me unfathomably happy. PLEASE TRY IT EVERYONE, IT'S AMAZING. all cave titles are i personally prefer ketsui the most. Idk if you'll read this but please please please consider trying to play ketsui and understanding its mdchanics, i swear to God it's like at the top 3 best shmups cave made, and one of the best in general. Consider it a favor to yourself before than yo your audience, but even that is true. There ain't no game like a good arcade shmup, no sir.
I’m partial to dodonpachi daioujou and resurrection, mostly because battle garegga’s composer manabu namiki worked on both. I’d love to try out ketsui though
0:42 Just like Charlie's content. "almost immediately after I press play he starts talking about the actual subject in the title. Damn... when videos were videos."
if anyone is interested in games with this quality, the devs that made it are CAVE, with fantastic games like espgaluda 1 and 2, deathsmiles, esprade, the dodonpachi series, mushihimesama and futari, ketsui and so on, most of which are available on pc, ps4 or switch, not even kidding these are some of the best shmups ever.
When I think of the purest, simplest form of compelling, exciting gameplay, shmups always come to mind first. I was very happy to see this video as I woke up just now, TGB.
Good vid I recommend back other shoot ‘em ups like altynex and psyvariar. Never heard anyone even mention these but they are top tier. More love for the shmup genre
Played tons of this last year on Capcom arcade volume 1 while trying to expand my horizons on shmups. Very fun game and well paced for replays. Ultra satisfying to absorb a shitload of treasure in this
It's such a great, snappy and acessible bullet hell; great place for newcomers who are delving into Cave catalogue (together with espgaluda and dodonpachi)
As a shmup fan Progear ia great but the fact that it's a vertical horizontal shooter where you have to pick up medals... That fall downwards is kind of a deal breaker
"When games were games" ...This was incredibly niche when it came out, most people were playing GTA III and MGS 2 which aren't far from modern cinematic ganes.
It's developed by CAVE, if you liked it, there are a ton of great games by them that I recommend. They're the masters when it comes to SHMUPS/Bullet Hells.
@@598gh ye I didn't mean to detract credit from them, I just figured that it's called a _collaboration_ for something beyond the usual "cave made it, capcom published it" type deal. It was their first horizontal shmup after all, and made on the CPS2 board waaay after it was obselete.
While I admire Cave's proclivity in developing classic shmups well into the 2000s, I'm a little turned off by some fairly specific design decisions common to their works. While Progear judging by the footage here is more restrained than others in this regard, one of them also rears its head here: the game being reliant on hardware slowdown in its design. I'm not sure if the developers thought it impressive that the arcade machine buckles under the load of hundreds of enemy bullets swarming the screen, but precise maneuvers to avoid them being largely dependent on that very slowdown effect affording you the time to react and input a perfect one-pixel movement always rubbed me the wrong way. Just use better hardware, make the game run at full speed and have the bullets move slower or something, dammit!
As a fan of plenty of indie games, including the dreaded "quirky earthbound inspired RPG about depression" subgenre, I can tell you that while maybe there are, there are also assuredly 10000 more that are dispassionate, slapped together mediocre crap just like with AAA games. They can be just as soulless and uncreative, and unfun. I can't wait to play ANOTHER subversion of dating sims/visual novels by someone who's never played one!
Oh snap progear getting love!!! Yes a fantastic cave game

It s some RUclipsr inception going on ha. No joke I am going to do a vid on dmc3 soon, so the loop shall be complete
What if my two favorite gaming youtubers ever crossed over?
@@n2oshotandironman That would be awesome, i'm down :-)
@@TheElectricUnderground Always love to watch your take on other genre other than SHMUP! :D
Welcome to shmups baby. I'd recommend Akai Katana, it's a much less brutal spiritual successor to Progear

Not joking, wear a seatbelt when you’re playing this game. I got so excited that I damn near leapt into my tele screen

You’re uploading so much lately it’s glorious
It's really cool seeing you cover some of the more underexposed genres like shmups. Most games cave touched were great too
You should've added screams of terror as those kids got fucking EXPLODED god damn
I love this arc of TGBS.
Waiting for this to show up on the SF6 battle hub cabinets so I can start that game's true grind.
That would be glorious.
Two GBS videos in one week? You're spoiling us!
Also, this game looks unreasonably gorgeous, holy hell

love it, straight and to the point
Oh hell yeah I’ve been feeling the schmup itch lately and this looks sweet. Great video dude
“When games were games”. Truer words have never been spoken.
So, an airplane bullet hell shooter that looks like Metal Slug. Sounds awesome.
A good solid tight video, straight and to the point. Love it!
horizontally scrolling bullet hell hurts my brain, but it looks so good.
00:35 ....The cheering kids got splodid!
Progear is legit my favorite shmup of all time! i also love all of the main character designs, their super charming.
remember playing this on my psp neogeo emmulator and it was an absolute blast
some of the best pixeelart and art by the Last Exile artist
It reminded me of Last Exile a lot when I played it, I didn't know it had the same artist, that's cool!
It's such a great, snappy and acessible bullet hell; great place for newcomers who are delving into Cave catalogue (together with espgaluda and dodonpachi)
Wonder if you've played Sol Cresta, I love that game so much
As a big Capcom fan, I'm shocked I didn't know about this game sooner. Progear looks rad!
Two uploads in two days? Charlie, please. You're spoiling us.
Glorious Nippon.
0:23 😂 That’s was my thought when I first gave this game a go.
Blud is seriously on fire with this upload rate
GamingBrit Touhou arc coming soon
This was one of the first games I managed to run on MAME. Didn't know it got a home release. I have to check it out!
It didn't get a real home release, this is also emulated collection on MAME
0:46 i felt that
Damn this looks super good. Also the kids blow up?
Yes. The game actually has a surprisingly dark story, despite being minimal.
@@DeepCDiva Damn that's pretty brutal.
Awesome video and a great recommendation as always!
When you gonna review Rift Apart??? Are you planning on reviewing it for starters?
Got it emulating on psp. So fun to be able to have a crack at it whenever ive got 5 minutes spare.
I'm happilly shocked to see cave content from Charlie! Progear is great but it's not even the best cave hori shmup
Liking this format 👍

I feel like Radiant Silvergun would be a Schmup up your ally
The closest thing to a Porco Rossi game.
Dodonpachi review inbound???
Only costs $1 right now too!
Its a great game one of the best shooters out there and the music is kick ass.
Will consider it

Reviewing Shmups now? Fantastic, now do Einhander next B)
try Einhander
How does one acquire this game?
It's in the capcom arcade stadium
It's also a 70s to early 2000s arcade game so there's other methods.
It's like literally $2 in the Capcom Arcade Stadium too, dirt cheap
@@Galaxy40k right now it's 1$ on steam
Never heard of this game, but it looks great! Is on any modern systems?
