13 Sentinels is so good. One of the most unique gaming experiences our there with a story presented in such a creative way. Went under the radar when it came out unfortunately, but I feel it's now starting to gain a bit more popularity due to a dedicated cult following.

Vanillaware is certainly an underrated studio, even before their current iteration, their game Princess Crown was great too. I like that they tease upcoming ideas in their new years celebration messages, of which 13 Sentinels was teased as far back as 2013. Played almost all of their new games, starting with Muramasa and that is a great intro to this studio.

    • @CaptainPupu

Nothing they made even comes close to Odins sphere leifthrasir and muramasa. This 13 sentinels is a joke. The usual japanese nonsense stories with filler dialogue and a non existent combat system.
Vanillaware had the talent to create extremely beautiful, unparalleled hand drawn animations and art, interesting storylines and fluid, 2.5d combat. What happened with that? They threw it away for ... Moving circles with gifs. How the mighty has fallen....

It's a shame VN is such a niche genre because this game is criminally overlooked. The fact it was also a PS4-exclusive for the longest time certainly doesn't help. It's one of the best and most tightly-woven stories I have ever experienced, with a very interesting cast of characters and an absolute banger of a soundtrack. Vanillaware just don't miss.

13 Sentinels was my GOTY 2020, and I’m so glad it’s finally starting to get traction through word of mouth. Vanillaware is one of my favorite studios. All of their games have such gorgeous artwork, but sadly they’ve really gone under the radar for a long time. Their most well-known games are probably Dragon’s Crown, Muramasa, and Odin’s Sphere, the latter of which was my introduction to them and one of my earliest platinum trophies when the Leifthrasir version came out on PS4. Their most recent game is the GrimGrimoire: Once More, an enhanced remaster of one of their first games. There’s a surprisingly long demo for it available. I’ll be playing the game as soon as I find a chance with my giant backlog.

I always liked how information found throughout the progression of the game always brings something new and changes your thought process of the narrative and setting in general. It blew me away. Playing 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim gives off the similar sense to Neon Genesis Evangelion, on how first viewers that have no idea of the anime would think its just a Kaiju Vs Mech battles, but under the surface, it's much more than that.

I just started playing this game because I picked it up on Eshop sale for like 17 bucks - I am only at my 3rd character intro. What grabbed me is this character is from Imperial Japan wanting to win the war against the USA and he was basically catapulted into 1985. That alone is a freaking cool premise. Really looking forward to playing this game I had no idea about.

One thing i rly liked about it was how self contained and “finishable” it was. This wasn’t some large crazy game where you need to grind or replay but it wasn’t some simple 5 hour flask either. very very good and i found the art and graphics during the story part of the game to be especially well made and pleasing to the eye

I've been playing all Vanillaware's games since Muramasa on Wii, including remasters, while I love the way the story is presented and would highly recommend it, by and large this felt like one of their lesser titles. The Real Time Strategy is certainly better than critics say it is, but it doesn't feel as satisfying or as diverse as Odin Sphere or Dragon's Crown(though it doesn't have any of the annoyances of the latter).
It would have been greatly improved if there was more to do during the story sections, as in having secrets or Easter eggs referencing other Vanillaware games, or anything to make the environments feel more alive. Everything you do is just a way to move onto the next part of the story, which while not bad does feel like a missed opportunity.

Oh and as someone who played the battle mode on hard mode, yh you'll take some deaths a good bit if you want the challenge, otherwise normal mode should be fine enough for alot of ppl.

Vanillaware always have a problem with the amount of content in their games. Presumably because of the time it takes the tiny team to create the gorgeous artwork, all of their games have you seeing the same environments and characters over and over again. I think Odin Sphere has an amazing finale and it's fun to see the storylines from different perspectives - but it's a lot to ask to have the player beat mostly the same campaign with the same assets and bosses with five separate characters, just in a different order for each of them. It's a 50-hour game where you play a single 10-hour game five times to get to the conclusion, which just doesn't feel necessary. Or at least, not done as well as it could be, if those different campaigns had had more unique content to them.
Dragon's Crown isn't small for a classic beat 'em up, and it's fun just to play which helps a lot, but if you intend to get the most out of it you'll have to replay those stages again and again. Par for the course for the genre I suppose but it wants you to repeat a lot of content just to see the ending in a way you won't have to for Streets of Rage 2 or whatever.
That's been the big issue with getting into 13 sentinels for me. The story may or may not land for me - I had suspicions some of the memory loss rubbish is gonna lead to some awfully contrived stuff - but it's also the knowledge that in terms of visuals on this adventure, it's gonna be an abstract battle view and something like 10 adventure screens for this 50-hour adventure again. I'll try and get over that hump eventually, though. In my experience, despite the tediousness of repeated content, these games are worth it in the end.

    • @CornishCreamtea07
      @CornishCreamtea07 Год назад +1

Yeah the reused environments and levels do become a problem the longer you play. The remasters would be the ideal time to add some new environments, but they never do, Dragon's Crown pro adds nothing new, so they could have added one more level to visit and maybe made the hub town a little bigger. At least Muramasa has locations and bosses exclusive to each playable character(you can go to the others post game but that's just for optional items).

An absolutely bonkers journey of discovery. I kept a notebook from the halfway mark to try and connect the dots on my own. The eb and flow of confusion and 'oh my god, what?!' moments every 2 or hours keep the pacing really good.
I don't love the ending or some of the weird story parts in school where there's some silly trial and error, but aside from that it's a delightfully unique and enjoyable game

  • @MD_Chaos
    @MD_Chaos Год назад +5

Personally, I didn't think it was that good
I enjoyed the game, mainly for it's look and music, some killer mechanical design work and also the RTS parts were pretty fun if real basic compared to like front mission.
But as someone, who's done a lot of Sci-fi and mecha(both in games and outside of it), esp the ones the game pays homage to, I thought it would be lot more interesting and nuanced than where it ended up, considering the development time and the hype it generated at the time.
The Narrative starts off interesting with a good hook, but once you just find out what the actual setting is(which is lifted from megazone 23), Things just become a matter of catching up to the climax and felt more like a drag to get there. The climax was solid and tied things up nicely, but it wasn't anything I hadn't seen before or really made the game worth it by the end.
The characters were fine and interesting, but aren't what I'd call memorable, the voice cast was great(Tomokazu seki playing the delinquent was great casting).
To me, it's like a 6/10 type game, enjoyable and well made with some stand out parts, but not something I'd think stands as anything that oustanding.

Still one of my most favorite games ever. I enjoy strategy games myself. 13 Sentinels feels engaging, I like trying to engage with hordes of enemies that try to overwhelm my team and the goal I'm protecting. The stakes feel high enough for me to want to make the most out of my small yet specialized team of thirteen pilots. I get it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I wouldn't have loved 13 Sentinels as much as I did without the mech strategy gameplay. It's as abstract yet rewarding as the scifi mystery plot.

I played it mid June, I had beaten Persona 5 Royale before.
13 Sentinels is still the best game of that year. So much so that I was willing to blindly buy Vanilaware's next releases.
Despite how jumpy the series of events are, I like how they all make sense in the end.

A friend of mine practically forced me to buy this game when it came to Switch because he was convinced I'd love the story, and I was so mad to learn he was right.

I wanted to play it for the story, but honestly 30 hours of mashing a button to get more dialog got unbearable. Guess I will have to watch a summary on youtube.

Unfortunately, the discourse surrounding this game's translation/localization has forever turned me off from playing it.
And that's a shame, because I want to support Vanillaware in the hopes that Odin Sphere and/or Dragon's Crown might get ported to the Switch someday.

If it got PC port, it'll use DRM just like every atlus games except Catherine classic

The game is censored. I'll never buy censored games. Torrenting with a translation fix may be viable if it ever gets ported on PC.

    • @mahendrap1960

Which censorship you are talking, this is not h€&tai visual novel game, this game is made by well known developers , there is no censorship in this gamy

This video really should have been 13 minutes long instead of 7 minutes. You can easily fix this by adding 6 minutes of credits to this video 👍
