Great video!!! I have a 2012 Jeep Patriot and it has had issues with driving up steep grades where i would have to stop for about 15 mins for the transmission fluid to cool down (didn't know what was going on at the time). I also started to have power issues where I needed high rpms to maintain my speed and towards the end there was slipping gears problem. Not to mention the whining that started years ago...used to just happen after the engine would heat up and then the whining would happen all the time. I watched this video and did exactly what you did ( changing both filters and new fluid) and my car is back to working as well as it has in years!. I never leave comments, but i just wanted you to know you saved me big buck$....plus the great feeling of fixing the car myself. If you are having problems similar to mine, watch this video and maybe you can resolve it yourself.
Thank you for sharing it, I have the same problems. I'm going to replace the filters and I hope this solves the problem. How much oil did you put on it?
Informative video. My Compass was whining like a jet plane, never had fluid change . Tried just a fluid change and tranny filter and quited right down . I blamed it on the Chrysler cvt fluid. I used cvt fluid from auto parts store (motomaster) at 1/3 the cost (made by Shell) and still running fine after 3yrs since change. Used engine oil dip stick. I will now be changing that other filter. Thks
We've taken our 2010 Patriot to the transmission shop every 50k miles since we owned it. That tranny is a big pain in the rear & we don't drive it over 65mph/2k RPM to prevent the whining & overheating. The shop never told us about the canister filter under the battery, they just clean & change filter under the pan. Great video!
I was asking around here in Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan 2 quick oil change chops told me there is no filter in a cvt transmission. One car chop and one special transmission chop told me there is only one filter they didn't know about the little round one. I have a spine problem and I think I do it myself if it takes 2 days or more is ok. The thing is I can trust anyone just myself. I thank u so much for your video. 👍
Its pretty scary (and probably the reason why so many fail) that shops don't know about the filters on these things! As you can see, they have two filters!
This video helped me fix my 2011 Jeep Patriot! The whining sound was particularly bad on cold mornings. Would sometimes lessen after driving a while. When I opened up my CVT transmission, I did not have as many metal particles (Note: I stopped driving regularly as soon as the whining started), but the filters were VERY clogged! My theory is the filters clog and starve the transmission of the flow of fluid. Which is what creates the whining sound. After replacing both filters and about 6 quarts of new CVT ATF+4 fluid, my car runs well and the whine is gone! This happened to my Patriot at about the 115K mile mark. The service manual should be updated to recommend CVT filter changes every 80K IMO. The hardest part was getting the plastic skid plate on and off.
Your comment has given me hope. I just made an appt for Monday to go to the Jeep dealership because my 2011 Patriot is whining. It started when it turned cold. The car drives fine but the noise is constant . My mechanic said I need a new transmission, which I can't afford. He did NOT check the filter or anything. After reading your comment, I'm going to get a second opinion before selling it. Thx
@@QueenShelly82 Note: Jeep dealerships have an agreement with Nissan that Jeep will NOT repair the transmissions. (Nissan supplies the CVT transmission). You might be able to get them to do the filter and fluid change. But they will only ever recommend a transmission replacement even if it would be a simple fix like a bad solenoid in the valve body. You are probably better off going to a Nissan dealer or a trusted transmission shop that regularly works on CVT.
thanks to you tube. im a 60 year old motorhead, when i was young i went to all the old timers to ask how you do things. now they are all gone. you young motor heads are a great source of infomaiton. thanks thanks thanks.
This is a life saver. About a month ago, the temperature outside was reaching 90 degrees. Started whinning when I pressed gas, and got louder the more I gave her gas. Then transmission temperature light illuminated. Pulled over, sat in neutral, and it went away. Never has it shifted hard or shifted weird. Starting to do it more often now, with no transmission codes. EVERY trans shop either told me replace it or they dont mess with them. A lot of them told me its almost impossible to do a fluid and filter change. Again, she runs great other then the noise every so often, knock on wood. I will definitely be trying this. P.s if this does not work, does anyone know if I have to replace the transmission, can you put a standard transmission in it instead of the o.e cvt? I have a 2012 jeep patriot latitude 2wd w/cvt transmission.
Hi, make sure you change BOTH the filters, every 50K miles or so. As long as your trans didnt slip or anything bad its probably still ok. You can put a manual in it, but youll have to research how, I dont think its a cheap/easy thing to do, but it is possible. Keep me posted on how it goes! Thanks for leaving a comment!
Trans shops are scared of cvt cuz they don’t know much about them. Change oil and filters and you will be good. Oil type and amount are important. To much oil can damage and to little it will whine again. It’s very doable for a backyard mechanic if you follow the directions here. I’ve done several and it’s not voodo or anything just follow this video and buy the special dip stick on Amazon.
i just experienced the simptoms on mine, i pulled over, waited awhile and drove it home slow, the light shut off, and power came back and whining went away, like back to normal, i will get it serviced tho, i don't want bigger problems. i bought this jeep used a few months back. with around 145000. miles on it. thank for video.
I’ve had two jeeps with the cvt. Found if you change oil and filters you will be good for a while but if you take it on long trips, like 5-600 miles they still overheat! I put a truck aftermarket trans cooler on my last one and it worked like a champ! 386000 miles and gave to grandson who sold it and see it still running around town.
I can't imagine that today I just got a good news from you, I have my Nissan Xtrail T31 CVT, it makes whining noise at 100mph. I normally service the transmission every 30,000 miles I drop the pan and clean the magnets, and clean transmission filter, put new CVT fluid but never did I know there is another one at the top and I have never changed it, I will now consider changing both of them and see whether the whinning will go away. I will come back for updates
Keep me posted! Hope it works out. I can’t believe even dealers don’t know about the top filter. I honestly think it’s a scam to sell more repair work when they blow.
Thanks dude, I have a 2012 Jeep Patriot Limited Edition 4WD and am experiencing a whining noise when I go past 2000 rpms on the highway (don't hear it in the city). I believe the transmission filter underneath the battery is the issue. I'm going to perform a whole transmission fluid change with the new gasket and other filter too. *Thanks for showing us how much CVT transmission fluid you used.* Crazy how there's no dipstick already in place for us
i’m commenting because i have run out of options with my 2010 jeep patriot. i love this car, it is so amazing and has given me next to no issues except for one big one. i got this car in the fall and had no problems, but when the weather started to get hotter, my transmission ended up overheating after a 45 minute to an hour drive at around 65 mph. i’d like to say that i take really good care of my car and never push it too hard, i usually only ever go 65 at the fastest and never go over 3 rpm when accelerating, i usually only hit 2 and a half when i need to go fast. i’ve had my transmission overheat 3 times in the almost year that i’ve had it (this is the second 2010 patriot i’ve had, but my other was totaled in an accident, but i never had this problem, even in the summertime). after going to a mechanic, i found out that the previous owners had installed an after market ac unit and all of my hoses had been disconnected and were no longer cooling efficiently. i had the entire unit replaced and assumed that would fix it for good, it wasn’t until about three months later when i had been driving around for about an hour and a half to two hours that it happened again while i was going around 60 on the highway. most of my drive before was either on the interstate (65 mph) or in the city (30-45 mph) with the ac on because i had someone in the car with me, but usually i just drive with the windows down. afterwards, i took it to my mechanic and they couldn’t find anything wrong with it without tearing my transmission apart, so yesterday i brought it into a transmission shop and they had it for about a day and a half but couldn’t find anything wrong with it because they couldn’t get it to act up. they even said that everything sounded good and ran well. when they put the computer scanner on my car, it comes up with a torque converter code, but they said that of that was the issue, then it would happen more frequently, rather than only three times. even after with it overheating, they said that my transmission fluid looks super clean and is completely filled up. i’m about to make a long drive soon and i really need this issue resolved. sorry for the long read, but if there is anything that you can diagnose from this, or any advice that you could give that would be fantastic! i was thinking about having an aftermarket transmission cooler installed as well as changing my filters, i don’t know if that would help, but i only need it to make this trip and then it will only be going city speeds for a while, at least until winter.
How many miles on the transmission? When was it serviced last? The first thing I say to do, is change the fluid and filters, BOTH the filters, some dealers dont even know about the smaller second one on top of the transmission that I show how to change. After that, possibly an auxiliary transmission cooler would be worth adding if you want to keep the car. Keep me posted! Best of luck!
@@JohnVHLife my transmission just hit 164k a week or so ago and i got it at 157k. the last time it was serviced was when i got my oil changed around the middle of june. i was looking back at the service record on it and it looks like the transmission filters have NEVER been changed, or at least never recorded. i’ve already bought the new filters and plan on bringing them to my mechanic this week, i’m definitely going to ask them about installing that cooler as well. thanks for the response, i really hope this fixes my problem! 🤞🏼
@@andrewstewart8704 oh wow i totally forgot about this 😅 but yes, this actually did work for me! i bought the filters myself from an auto shop and brought them to my mechanic to have them install it. they did have an issue though where on the schematics for the transmission, it looks like one of the filters is internal, but i showed them this video and they were able to replace it no problem! i haven’t had any issues with my transmission overheating since then and have driven 3+ hour trips at a time! if you’re having issues and no one can diagnose an issue, i would definitely recommend replacing BOTH of the filters because i think the second hidden one is where the issue lies.
If you take your cvt jeep to a mechanic , they will only change the fluid. Even the dealer will only change the pan screen filter if they find metal shavings. NO ONE will change the upper paper filter. Unfortunately that upper paper filter is VERY IMPORTANT to change. Even if nothing else was done here, JUST changing the upper filter would make a big difference in transmission operation, even with dirty fluid. The fluid will not cool or flow properly if that paper filter is clogged.
Hello! I had this problem with the wining noise and jeep patriot wont go up to 20-30 miles, I fixed it by doing this, and it works back to normal. Now , I’m a little concerned about how long is this going to work fine? Before having to replace or rebuilt transmission? Car is a 2012 and it has 147,000 miles. Any comments will be appreciated with any ideas or experiences! Thank you so much for the video !
Great questions, I wish I knew the answer, how bad were the magnets in the pan? If they were not bad, it'll probably last quite a while, but that's a guess..
There's a $60 part that replaces the plate that holds the top filter in, basically a bunch of plates stacked up to add surface area for cooling...definitely going to replace mine with that.

Was it going into limp mode too apart from the whining noise? I'm experiencing whining, lack of acceleration past 40km per hour, some over revving but no speed change then enters limp mode.
Another trick you can use to find out how much fluid you need is to measure your old oil that you took out. Assuming its not leaking you can use that as a reference when you dont have a dipstick. Thanks for making the video, I had never heard of that top filter before
Hoping this will solve my problem. No whining noise as I know of(exhaust is gone LOL) But I think I need fluid change and filters change because she seems to somewhat overheat or something on warm days every so often. Now I know I can just get the dip stick to check how much fluid I need. So that will save me $700 from the dealership since I ask for a flush. He'll to the no I ain't paying $700. Maybe to get it repair lmao but not to flush it. But I didn't know it's that easy to do all of this. So I will take your advice and this video when I'm free to do my patriot. Thanks!
I am glad that the new filter and fluid fixed it. I have a 2017 Rogue that I am planning a fluid change on. It is really just preventative maintenance more than anything. We had a Jeep Patriot and it made until 30,000 miles before it had problems. The problem was it would not go. Of course with CVTs you will get a lot pf people who have had good luck with them and a lot of people who have had nothing but problems and curse the day the things were ever invented. The way I see it there are also some really awful automatic transmissions too. The early Volkswagen 09Gs were horrible to. Some had bad valve bodies and then at one point Volkswagen was telling people the fluid never needed changed because it was supposed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. You can imagine how hard that came back and bit them!!! The irony of those being so unreliable was that they were really made by Aisin who also makes transmissions for Toyotas. In fact Toyota owns a large part of Aisin if I am not mistaken. But the irony of the 09G reliability is that the Toyota Aisin transmissions were reliable.
had this same issue, bought the parts and it fixed the transmission noise. I also replaced the catalytic converter a few days after and car runs as new!...
Thanks I did change the 2 transmission filter and oil pan gasket ,add almost 8 quarts of oil and the noise did stop right away ,thanks I save around $3k on a used transmission my jeep has 189000 miles
My jeep patriot is making the same sound but is stuck in limp mode and stalls when i try to drive it. Has anyone had that problem along with the noise and did this help?
Where can I find the fluid and filters I have a 2015 and having the same problem they want me to get another transmission and this could probably save me 3 grand

theres a hex key drain plug on for the transaxle too. basically just sit on the drivers side and itll be up and to the left. it makes less of a mess imo. it doesnt drain the pan all the way, but it helps the process go smoother.
Also I can't find the tube you have with the plug for checking the fluid after complete. Can u help me as I am single dad and can't afford to take it to shop. But I am ok with twisting wrenches and fixing myself.
Yes be filter that hole is on the opposite side but it lines up. I have a 2016 jeep compass and mine would whine and go into limp mode when going on freeway for awhile. Couldn't figure where whine was coming from but tranny alert would come in. Changed both filters and wah lah problems fixed. No more limp mode, tranny getting hot, and whine disappeared. So happy.
Hi, I have a 2012 Jeep Patriot 2.0L. The Transmission got overheated and I drained the Transmission oil and changed both filters and added a new oil . Now when I get to the Stop Light it won't speed up as suppose to and the RPM with the speed is different! The engine light came on and when I do the Testing it comes up with the Error code, P0842 with the status Active and the Description is: K2 Pressure Sensor circuit open/short to ground. I would like to know what does it mean and what is the problem? Also The engine Traction Light is ON and never turned off.
Everyone knocks the CVT transmissions but my 2011 Patriot Latitude X has almost 300k miles on it and it still drives strong. The reason the CVT is failing for people is cause they don't keep up on the maintenance both my training filters have been changed at 35k miles whether they needed it or not.
I I'm not sure if my jeep is cvt or normal how can I tell. I gave the vehicle to my daughter and it is whining now. The owners manual doesn't say. I tried casting advanced with the Vin # they were no help.
I know this video is over a year old but I just bought a 2009 Jeep Compass on Tuesday 5/31/22 and it just now started making that noise at the start of the video today Monday 6/6/22 as I was taking my girlfriend to Morgantown. I'm gonna try this on Friday and see if it fixes it.
Glad I have the 2014 with the 6-speed Hyundai transmission.. just did a drain and fill on the transmission and will do another one after a few 1000 miles.
Most of what's on the magnet is the pitting created by the sides of the steel belt as the Pulleys adjust with the input shaft at high torque, It's generally minimized by ECU's letting off on acceleration as the pulleys move into the appropriate input output ratio. Modern ECU adjustments can be felt against older ECU settings by simply putting your foot down on the accelerator pedal. Early Jatco CVT ECU's will have you accelerate almost instantly off the line with the pulleys adjusting and your RPM decreasing as you meet the desired speed set by the pedal. If you put your foot position to the same spot with the newer Jatco CVT ECU settings, you will loose power momentarily, as the pulleys adjust, then the throttle servo will apply the throttle same as the older settings, but with the pulleys preset so that the CVT steel belt doesn't score the cones, and the pulleys don't chew away the grooves that allow them to move smoothly closer and apart. The major issue now with the Jatco CVT is with 2 kinds of engine breaking. When you are in a ratio where the input and output shafts have the same RPM, that's considered to be "close" to top gear. if you take your foot off the accelerator in traditional automatic cars, it's normal for it to drop into Overdrive (or top gear) as the engine has minimal load. In CVT it is the same. When you take your foot off the accelerator, the engine throttle adjusts to meet neutral load to the input shaft of the CVT, the CVT and throttle adjust in sync until the pulleys are in the "top gear" ratio, and then the throttle lets off. in both situations engine breaking is minimal and if going down a hill follows, you may "downshift" so that you have a much higher RPM in the engine, thus more compression strokes and better engine breaking. Here's the problem. In traditional Automatic cars, the torque converter aides you in a smooth down shift, when you put the car into 2 or L, or down shift with paddles. The car immediately shifts and the engine stresses apply. No throttle is used, the Jump in RPM is purely from the load on the engine from the transmission as the input shaft speeds up. And for the purpose of slowing down, this is perfect. However, In a CVT transmission doing the same thing attempts to change gear ratios using the pulleys, the engine first applies a little bit of throttle so that the input shaft of the CVT isn't trying to slow down. when the pulleys then move into the simulated Gear ratio, the engine throttle is released. It's the Reverse of accelerating from stop. However, An engines Max RPM during engine breaking is governed by the mechanics behind the engine, and not a limiter on the ECU, so when you down shift rapidly in a CVT, or even just click the stick into 2 or L, the engine can only throttle up to maximum RPM allowed by the ECU. This may be slower then predicted speed of the input shaft when the pulleys adjust to the fixed ratio of 2 or L, or whatever the paddles are set to. When the pulleys adjust, the input shaft to the CVT will be going much slower then it needs to turn for the output shaft to meat the ratio, set by the ECU, and the CVT is designed to adjust rapidly to ensure a fast ratio change (see below). The CVT pulleys adjust with the CVT belt under higher stresses then designed to tolerate and the whole system deteriorates rapidly in several ways. First, the insides of the cones become scored by the walls of the CVT belt as it tries pull inwards on the output cones, the steel bands rub harder as they go around the cones, and as they heat up rapidly, can lead to snapping, thus the belt collapses and the power train from engine to wheels is broken. Next, the cone halves are connected to shafts and move inwards and outwards with respect to the shafts. The system in place to allow smooth movements of the cone halves in a Jatco CVT are 3 channels on the shaft with steel balls that sit partially inside the cone halves, lubricated by the CVT fluid. When the pulleys adjust under load, the steel balls are under much higher stresses as the cone halves adjust allowing the weaker of the metals to score against each other, leading to the channels becoming chewed out which then allows the ball bearings to squeeze out of their grooves, leading to the cone have turning with respect to the shaft. This leads to the pulley unable to move inwards or outwards, and the Steel belt can then be forced to break apart if the steel bands are stretched from the contracting of both pulleys. Also, the cones become instantly useless as they can't shift ratio. Foot note: For all intensive purposes, automatic cars when shifted into 2 or L ... shift instantaneously to the desired gear ratio so that imidiate engine breaking takes place, even if the engine is red lining and you are flying down a hill. In the event of a CVT transmission, to fulfill the pose of emergency engine breaking, the smooth running of a CVT transmission is compromised. the only fix to prevent the excessive wear on the CVT mechanical system is to have the ECU deny the downshift due to the excessive loads presented on the CVT transmission, thus making the physical downshift, uneventful and the car continuing on at speed with no emergency engine breaking differences. I think that's right... could be wrong
I had a 2012. Trans temp warning light came on , pulled over and let it cool and added 1/2 quart. Power restored. 6 months later same thing. Pulled over and let it cool and added more fluid but power didn’t restore. Replaced filter as it was black. Didn’t work, no power. Took to shops and they said it was done. The only option was to replace. Some shops said it was stuck in limp mode and won’t come out of it til it’s replaced. Idk. Maybe I got screwed. It’s hard to tell unless I did every option. Got another car instead.
I have a 2012 Patriot and it's making the same noise. I'm going to try this fix and hopefully it works. Do you have any videos on solenoid b being stuck open?
I was trying to follow along to this video for my 2014 jeep patriot but the top of the transmission looks completely different and I do not see where the cylinder filter is located.
I just know it is a jeep Patriot 2014 sport 2wd. 2.4 L engine. I have seen videos where people are changing their 2014 jeep Patriot transmission fluid and their transmission looks like mine at the top but I have never seen them change a top filter just the bottom.
Hey, thank you for that. I found 2 little/medium size metal piece in the pan after draining all the oil. Is it bad ? I can send you a picture if that would help. Thanks.
Those harbor freight lights are awesome right . I have a 2007 compass that I bought for my daughter ot makes a whinny noise only when driving . I'm going to do the same service on It .
Hello from Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan I was at the dealership today with my Patriot it is a 2011 cvt 2.4 l. My transmission run hot 2 years ago, I stopped let the jeep cool down because the car was just screaming after the light was of I kept driving everything normal. So , I don't know if the oil changes after it overheated but 3 Days ago my transmission started not to shift proper anymore. I have to play a little with the gaspeddle and he shifted sometimes normal sometimes not. The dealership sad I need a new transmission for 9.700.00 dollar. Nobody checked the oil or the filters what do you think I have the feeling your way would be the right one. I think they want to make money. I am a Veteran and on CPP they don't pay much.
Could try to change the oil and both filters. It’s worth a try. But they make more money on swapping trans, and nobody seems to try to rebuild them for some reason.
I have a 2008 Jeep Patriot that makes this noise. Would it be wise to flush the transmission And add new fluid? I’m scared new fluid will cause more damage to the tranny than fix it. Idk when is the last time it was flushed. I am currently the second owner. Please help.
Thanks for the video. I had similar problems at 184k mikes , performed the same procedure and car was driving great. After 1k miles since the fluid change, started noticing limp mode. Code p0777 and some high rpm’s with more noisy drive. Any thoughts and suggestions? These trans are expensive to replace, wondering if the issue is fixable
wow, thats alot of miles on a cvt, they are a crap transmission, unfortunately, yours might be at the end of its life. Sadly its rare to find someone to repair them. You can find a low mile one on ebay or a junkyard and have it swapped in perhaps. I recently did that on a equinox in a video.
Thanx for the video. I bought a patriot and transmission doesn’t go in drive or reverse. Transmission is whining. You think replacing fluid and filters I have a chance?
Hello! Thank you for uploading this video, i will be trying this tomorrow, already got the parts, one question, how many quarts of fluid did you end up using? i couldn’t hear it in the video. thank you
@@JohnVHLife The fluid was very dark. Bottom filter did not have any debris, magnets where not so bad, no “slurry” on the bottom of the pan. Upper filter was nasty. Took it out for a rest run in the city and highway and no whining, better transition between gears and less lag when accelerating. In other words, like new! Thanks for your video. Changing the filters was just as easy as in your video. The only “challenge” is not to make a mess with the old fluid. Now, it’s the plugs turn. I am getting the car from my dad. 110K Km (70K mi) and all is original. Nothing seems to be bad (other than the CVT but that is now fixed), but I want to do the normal maintenance to it.
I just picked up a compass with transmission issues looks like the exact same transmission do you know if this is the 4wd w/o off road craw ratio having a hard time identifying which trans I need to buy as a replacement thanks!

Did this about a month ago and it fixed our problem! My 2013 patriot did just throw 2 codes yesterday however and curious what you suggest. P0777 and P0730
Yes, Ive had that most times. I dont have a dipstick, I just measure the amount of old oil that came out, and put in the same amount of oil. Ive done 3 services on a 12 and 14 compass and each one has taken jsut over 6 quarts. As an interesting side note, most modern transmission fluids are sensitive to temp, so you want your new fluid to be approx the same temp as the old fluid when you measure and fill
A bit late to this discussion but following your links for the smaller filter, does not show anything for a 2012 Patriot 2.4. There is just a slight whine (77,483 miles) upon hard acceleration (which is not the usual driving style) and a garage replaced the fluid at 60,000 with Amsoil CVT although I've no idea if they actually changed any of the filter(s) as at the time, I knew nothing about this subject! Would this suggest there is NOT the upper filter for the car and short of dismantling the battery & shelf to check physically, would you suggest any other link for such?
@@JohnVHLife So I barely bought the vehicle today I was freaking out cause it was making the same noise as yours but it threw this code p0746 p0777 Jeep Patriot something about the solenoid so if it helps out anybody my problem was fixed no check engine light now run smooth :) thank you 🙏
I have a 2015 patriot latitude 2.0 I have my transmissions slipping and making same noise. How am I able to tell if it's a CVT transmission or something else?
I just got the trans fluid changed but didn’t replace the cooler filter. Am I going to have to replenish the trans fluid if I want to change this filter?
I see a problem with your trans fluid change... All you did was drain the pan, but you left all the dirty fluid in the torque converter and the cooler too. So you just added some clean fluid to the dirty fluid. You should have taken the cooler line off and ran the engine until it stops pumping fluid out , fill the trans again and repeat until you get clean fluid coming out of cooler line.
Did you replace the O-ring (on the Cooler Bypass Valve) when replacing the CVT Fluid Filter (i.e. upper, pleated filter)? The service manual says to do so. However, I can't find the part through Mopar or anywhere else! (The Parts department at my local Jeep dealership didn't seem familiar with either the CVT Fluid Filter OR the Cooler Bypass Valve O-ring. They couldn't find a part number, much less sell it to me. It makes me wonder if they bother to replace either when doing a transmission service?) What's one supposed to do here? Buy a whole new Cooler Bypass Value, just to get a new O-ring (2010-2017 Mopar - 4872709ab)? When I first checked with Mopar yesterday, the part was listed at $270. Now, it has suddenly increased to $499 for some reason! (2015 Jeep Patriot)
I just confirmed with my local Jeep dealer that they never replace the CVT Fluid Filter when doing a transmission service. They said that they don't like to get into the CVT. Further, they said that Chrysler says it doesn't need to be replaced. When I pointed out that the service manual says otherwise, they just doubled down. All they do is drop the pan. Unbelievable! I don't know how I feel about that... I'm just glad to have seen you do this successfully here. It seems like the right thing to do.
Thanks for the video , do you know the small filter plate torque spec ? Or do you just tighten it by feel , I ordered the filter just never done one before, I had the dealer do my service before, but on the invoice they never changed that small filter, thanks
Have you made any vids on changing the trans filler tube on 2012 jeep patroit? Mine broke off at the bracket. Known issue with jeep that they wont do a recall on. They want you to have them fix so they can take your money. You do a great job on your video’s, keep up the good work.
Not specifically on that, but my other patriot videos where I pulled the transmission out and fixed it and put it back in, part 3 at 8min mark I explain putting the tube back in. See if that helps.
Question for you I have a 2010 Jeep Patriot and transmission is slipping Do you think I should change the transmission oil and filter and hope that would help also Do you have any idea of how expensive it could be to rebuild or replace the car transmission ??? Thanks
Thanks for this awesome video. My 2014 Compass just started with the whining a few days ago after there was a loud clinking noise and when I go up a hill it starts to bucks a bit. Will this service of changing the filter help? Also when u refill the fluid does it just go in where u check the fluid? I just purchased the long dipstick thing to check the fluid
@@JohnVHLife right but once it's running it's going to warm up fast. Plus your supposed to go from drive to reverse a few times then check temp and level in neutral
Your video is very helpful and informative on what is needed to be done, so thank you for sharing. I've got a 2013 Jeep Patriot Latitude 4WD with the CVT. Mine doesn't whine, but it does shudder when shifting. Will doing this help that issue? Or is the shuddering an underlying issue of a bigger problem with these lovely transmissions?
Had the transmission fluid and filters changed in mine. I didn't buy the Chrysler brand fluid that it calls for, but I bought Valvoline transmission fluid for the CVT type. It fixed my problem with the shuddering during shifting. Just to update anyone who was curious or searches for answers later as I did
What does it mean if theres fluid on the pan bolts? There was some present when I changed the fluid so I replaced the gasket but I woke up to a few drops on the ground that came off one of the bolts so it seems like that may not have fixed it. I'm hoping it's just some residual oil from the draining that's just heating up and collecting there but I've tried to wipe it up pretty good and still find a little on the bolts later
Would it be so much to ask if you could ask if you could add a link to exactly what it looks like please thanks. Mines is a jeep Patriot 2007 limited 2.4
Im curious if you know for sure to check the fluid in park or neutral? Also is the fluid just mopar ATF+4? And you only put about a gallon total after your filter change? Thank you for the video very helpful.
Great video...well done and explained 👏. Just wished how and quantity of transmission fluid and testing processes. It's the little details that get me. thanks 😁
So happy to hear! I appreciate the feedback!!
Thanks! I think that little filter may be the key to keeping these things alive!
Hi same here they do not know much about that transmission. From no filter at all or only one in the pen. Thank you for you coment.
Exactly why I bought a stick patriot.

No shit it doesn’t shift hard or weird, it’s a CVT
i just experienced the simptoms on mine, i pulled over, waited awhile and drove it home slow, the light shut off, and power came back and whining went away, like back to normal, i will get it serviced tho, i don't want bigger problems. i bought this jeep used a few months back. with around 145000. miles on it. thank for video.
Make sure they change both filters!
I'd be interested to see or know how you added the transmission cooler!
Pretty smart. I also have a trans cooler on my 5 speed
Thanks dude, I have a 2012 Jeep Patriot Limited Edition 4WD and am experiencing a whining noise when I go past 2000 rpms on the highway (don't hear it in the city). i’m commenting because i have run out of options with my 2010 jeep patriot. i love this car, it is so amazing and has given me next to no issues except for one big one. i got this car in the fall and had no problems, but when the weather started to get hotter, my transmission ended up overheating after a 45 minute to an hour drive at around 65 mph. i’d like to say that i take really good care of my car and never push it too hard, i usually only ever go 65 at the fastest and never go over 3 rpm when accelerating, i usually only hit 2 and a half when i need to go fast. i’ve had my transmission overheat 3 times in the almost year that i’ve had it (this is the second 2010 patriot i’ve had, but my other was totaled in an accident, but i never had this problem, even in the summertime). after going to a mechanic, i found out that the previous owners had installed an after market ac unit and all of my hoses had been disconnected and were no longer cooling efficiently. i had the entire unit replaced and assumed that would fix it for good, it wasn’t until about three months later when i had been driving around for about an hour and a half to two hours that it happened again while i was going around 60 on the highway. most of my drive before was either on the interstate (65 mph) or in the city (30-45 mph) with the ac on because i had someone in the car with me, but usually i just drive with the windows down. afterwards, i took it to my mechanic and they couldn’t find anything wrong with it without tearing my transmission apart, so yesterday i brought it into a transmission shop and they had it for about a day and a half but couldn’t find anything wrong with it because they couldn’t get it to act up. they even said that everything sounded good and ran well. when they put the computer scanner on my car, it comes up with a torque converter code, but they said that of that was the issue, then it would happen more frequently, rather than only three times. even after with it overheating, they said that my transmission fluid looks super clean and is completely filled up.
i’m about to make a long drive soon and i really need this issue resolved. sorry for the long read, but if there is anything that you can diagnose from this, or any advice that you could give that would be fantastic! i was thinking about having an aftermarket transmission cooler installed as well as changing my filters, i don’t know if that would help, but i only need it to make this trip and then it will only be going city speeds for a while, at least until winter.

Agreed!

Another trick you can use to find out how much fluid you need is to measure your old oil that you took out. Assuming its not leaking you can use that as a reference when you dont have a dipstick. Thanks for making the video, I had never heard of that top filter before
OR you could just flip open the owners manual...

Hi, I have a 2008 jeep compass with the cvt , is the process and everything the same?
Yes it is!
Thank you
Thanx for the video. I bought a patriot and transmission doesn’t go in drive or reverse. Transmission is whining. You think replacing fluid and filters I have a chance?
it doesnt move at all? Thats probably a bad sign, but you can try the fluid and both filters as a last resort.
I’m trying this tomorrow pray to god this will work thank you sir
Please keep me posted. I hope so!!
Did it help?
Men I didn't know about the filter under the battery thanks 👍
Most don't, but its an important one!
Im experience no acceleration...filters cant fix that right?
maybe, its hard to say, but its the cheapest thing to try
Hello! Thank you for uploading this video, i will be trying this tomorrow, already got the parts, one question, how many quarts of fluid did you end up using? i couldn’t hear it in the video.
thank you
I think I show. But it takes about a gallon
Tomorrow I am changing the filters and fluid on my 2011 Caliber (70K), hope that this is all I need to do.
Let me know how it goes!
@@georgedlakeYes! Happy to hear!
I just picked up a compass with transmission issues looks like the exact same transmission do you know if this is the 4wd w/o off road craw ratio having a hard time identifying which trans I need to buy as a replacement thanks!
Hello my friend.
how much cvt fluid needs?
Thanks for your time.
@11:45
Im so Sorry, I don't understand very well English. :( ... It's the reason for I write my friend.
Thanks for your time.
Please oil capacity?
So what did you actually do is it still making the noise
Serviced the transmission. No. It’s fixed
My compass still make the noise
My trans filler tube is broken off, and there’s a cylinder thing inside of the tube that makes it difficult to fill. Is it normal?
I bought her used and I had the same issue.
Doesnt sound normal, I show what it looks like, if its not the same then you may need a new tube or fish the piece out and get a new plug.
How can i use a 10mm if i cant find them?
SOL :)
10mm sockets are designed to run away, disappear and fall into places where they can't be retrieved. Then they sit back and laugh at you !!! 😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you for this thorough video and explanation. Are there links somewhere for the filter, screen and dipstick?
Thank you, Yes, first items in the description above.
Link to the Main Transmission filter and gasket: amzn.to/3gZ0y4X
Link to the small upper filter: amzn.to/306vsSf
Link to the CTVF-4 Fluid: amzn.to/2OiV0pF
Link to the dipstick: amzn.to/304YkdN
How can I reset the cvt transmission without an auto scanner ?
Not sure it’s possible.
Will this make the truck lose speed some??
No
My tube that the trans dipstick goes into broke off randomly. Not sure what to do with it
Get a replacement tube, shouldnt be too hard to replace
Did this about a month ago and it fixed our problem! My 2013 patriot did just throw 2 codes yesterday however and curious what you suggest. P0777 and P0730
Any update? I have P0730 and am about to do the two filter change method.
Same here p0730 184,000 mes replacing fluids and filters soon
Have you ever has one of these CVTs take more than 6L of fluid?
Hey how can i tell if my 2015 has a CVT ot six spees transmission??
Might have to run your VIN, or see if there are any numbers on the transmission to reference.
Good video my brother now my question did your vehicle through any codes
No
@@JohnVHLife
So I barely bought the vehicle today I was freaking out cause it was making the same noise as yours but it threw this code p0746 p0777 Jeep Patriot something about the solenoid so if it helps out anybody my problem was fixed no check engine light now run smooth :) thank you 🙏
@@christoledo5217 changing the fluid and filters got rid of the light and codes? Good to know.
I have a 2015 patriot latitude 2.0
I have my transmissions slipping and making same noise. How am I able to tell if it's a CVT transmission or something else?
Google
any update?
I just got the trans fluid changed but didn’t replace the cooler filter. Am I going to have to replenish the trans fluid if I want to change this filter?
No, itll be fine, but definitely change the little filter!
I think running a trans with no oil would be worse than leaving a little in the converter.
It makes me wonder if they bother to replace either when doing a transmission service?)
What's one supposed to do here? Buy a whole new Cooler Bypass Value, just to get a new O-ring (2010-2017 Mopar - 4872709ab)? When I first checked with Mopar yesterday, the part was listed at $270. Now, it has suddenly increased to $499 for some reason! (2015 Jeep Patriot)
I didn’t. Mine seemed fine.
@@jeffskone Clearly this is a job security thing for them all, pretty crappy of them to scam people like this.
Buy the aftermarket dip stick. It's worth it
Thanks for the video , do you know the small filter plate torque spec ? Or do you just tighten it by feel , I ordered the filter just never done one before, I had the dealer do my service before, but on the invoice they never changed that small filter, thanks
Im not sure, I just tighten it by feel, they are small bolts, so dont overtighten them, make them snug. Shame on them for doing the complete job.
@@JohnVHLife I can confirm. Had this problem a year ago and the dealer changed the big filter but not the small.
@@strra No wonder these have a bad rap, they aren't servicing them properly! Scam by jeep to make money off new trans perhaps?
Have you made any vids on changing the trans filler tube on 2012 jeep patroit? Mine broke off at the bracket. Known issue with jeep that they wont do a recall on. They want you to have them fix so they can take your money. You do a great job on your video’s, keep up the good work.
Not specifically on that, but my other patriot videos where I pulled the transmission out and fixed it and put it back in, part 3 at 8min mark I explain putting the tube back in. See if that helps.

Question for you
I have a 2010 Jeep Patriot and transmission is slipping
Do you think I should change the transmission oil and filter and hope that would help also
Do you have any idea of how expensive it could be to rebuild or replace the car transmission ??? Thanks
You could try. But when they slip that’s usually very bad. It’s rare to find a place that’ll rebuild them. Everyone replaces them.
Thanks! Its worth trying, but it sounds like you may have a different issue, but you never know. Yes, refill into the dipstick tube
Those temp numbers are the fluid temp not outside air temp. Supposed to read trans temp with a scanner
Good point, I would assume when its cold it should be close to what the outside air temp would be
@@JohnVHLife right but once it's running it's going to warm up fast. Plus your supposed to go from drive to reverse a few times then check temp and level in neutral
I have p0730 code and when I doing 45 I hear noise like the gear is on L
Question: Is the whinny noise youre talking about sound like someone revs up a race car when you accelerate??
Screeching from the trans, should hear it in the video.
Is there any special tools ill need for this job by the way?
Nope! Just the dip stick you have to buy
It’s worth a try. I wish people would report back as to what worked and what didn’t.
@@JohnVHLife I'll get the work done and definitely let everyone know in case someone has the same issue and start searching for answers.
Had the transmission fluid and filters changed in mine. I didn't buy the Chrysler brand fluid that it calls for, but I bought Valvoline transmission fluid for the CVT type. It fixed my problem with the shuddering during shifting. Just to update anyone who was curious or searches for answers later as I did
Try changing your spark plugs instead.... It helped me!?
@@edithchevrier5658 that is next on the list
Did you put the fluid in before turning on the vehicle on Neutral? Oh and did you leave it on the 40mark?
Yes, never run an automatic without fluid! I think I left it there.
Maybe the gasket?
Check the fill tube for cracks, etc. It is not supported very well.
Hello. My Girlfriends Patriot is making this noise as well as bucking and jerking. Was this transmission doing that as well?
Mine was not. But it’s worth a try.
So did it work?
Yes
Your the best
My issue is driving up hills going 70 or in a hot day
@@TheWonderfulWonders add an oil cooler. If you changed the filters already
Id have to double check, but typically auto trans you check running in neutral
Great video...well done and explained 👏. Just wished how and quantity of transmission fluid and testing processes. It's the little details that get me. thanks 😁
Thank you so much. I appreciate it!
How is it doing now?
Ive since sold it, but it worked great!
