Pet Shop Boys were massive in late 80s early 90s, even though they are not as commercial now, they are still very prominent on the music scene, and still produce excellent music. I love them.
Not so commercial now ? Just llok at their actual concerts and last album.. Just saying....
Ehh, not quite,,,,
@@cappaculla They haven't written a consistently good album since Fundamental in 2006, and that was their first good album since Nightlife in 1999. They became too experimental after Very, and they quality of their output dropped. They still write the odd good pop song, but those are few and far between.
@@jivebunny3765 I have to disagree... their last 3 albums and b-sides are some of their best work in 20 years.
This song basically sets up Madonna's "Like a Prayer," released two years later. Tensions with religious strictures were reaching a breaking point as the gay movement and AIDS epidemic gained international attention. Pet Shop Boys are known for their lush productions during this period. Their next album "Introspective" is gorgeous - I remember being blown away the first time I heard it - so dramatic, such interesting combinations of musical instruments and dramatic buildup and flourishes on every song. But the flair for drama is definitely there in their first two albums, including this song. I think you can correctly use the term "epic" to describe their sound at this point in their long (and continuing) career. The Pet Shop Boys note that this song, and not "West End Girls" (a number one hit around the world), has become the fan favorite over the years. But they have so many great songs. I love the camp aspect of this video - everything seems stately, decorous, processional, restrained, but then a tongue sneaks out lasciviously, a stare turns leering, a riding crop becomes a fetish. They show that there's this eroticism beneath the monastic robes peaking through at all times, which is quite humorous. Today, we talk about "shaming" all the time, as a bad thing. There's slut shaming, weight shaming, etc., but this song is about an original shame orchestrated and endorsed by the Catholic Church: gay shaming.
For me this song was always about growing up as a gay man in 70s and the 80, when society still viewed it as a sin. And eventually gays themselves thought it must be sin..
Religious propaganda and misrepresentation influencing society prejudice and bias judgements
I was going to say the same thing. When I see the video I realize he is covering the 7 sins, but to me it was about being gay
I've always been a right of centre conservative, however I never understood why people thought what consenting adults were doing was any of their fucking business. Why even have an opinion on it.
@@oli19 Exactly! Like, i'm gay and I've always been so confused as to why people are so concerned about who we like and what we do. It's nobody's business whether you're gay, bi, or straight
@@martycullison4095 always has been to me too. I always thought that was the intention of the lyrics.
Neil Tennant has said in interviews that this song is to do with him coming to terms with his homosexuality.
The extra figures appearing (green woman, gold man etc.) are representations of the Seven Deadly Sins - Greed, Gluttony, Pride. Anger, Lust, etc.
I always thought this song was about religious frustration...probably because that is what I've experienced all my life and how I connect with this song. I've felt like this most of my life.
This went to number one in the UK on the day I was born.
You're lucky.. No1 in the UK charts when I was born was Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep.... 🙄😂
That makes me feel so old
Omg same here!
This went to number one the day I started my first divorce
Sep 1987
For me, this was always about being shamed for being gay. The Pet Shop Boys had a couple other songs that reflected the themes of the song. One, "This Must Be The Place I Waited Years To Leave", again deals with religious tyranny and persecution, and has one of my favorite lines: "I'm listening to the words I thought I'd never hear again
, a litany of saints and other ordinary men." Then there's "To Speak Is A Sin", which adresses the gay bar scene, especially for older men, where you're never "supposed" to just start a conversation with someone else, you first have to glance, stare, then possibly smile as an invite, LOL. The Pet Shop Boys has one of the best libraries of songs of any Eighties artists, and as others have mentioned, they still make great music.
In my opinion, this is the best Pet Shop Boys' song! Thanks for reacting to It's A Sin, Derek. You are great!
Pet Shop Boys was my favorite pop dance group in the 80s. I can suggest Domino Dancing, Always on my mind, Suburbia, I'm not scared and what have I done to deserve this
The song is his reaction to his Catholic upbringing in England. As a “reformed” Catholic myself I definitely SO relate to the song and when it came out I was blown away!
My favorite band since 1986😃
A couple of years ago I seen them live at the NEC in Birmingham, England, the sold out audience went nuts after they performed its a sin, was awesome
Everything Pet Shop Boys released from 85-90 in their imperial phase was masterpiece. That’s why they still have such a big fan base and they are still critically acclaimed.Pet shop boys are legends up there with other great artists like DM,U2,a-ha etc
More Pet Shop Boys please. Such a band!
What a great reaction...again! The Pet Shop Boys are one of my all time favorites. And this song was one that hit hard for me. I understood exactly what he was talking about. And then he confirmed it so it was an intense mirror for me. It was my "theme" song for a very long time. Great job again. 👍🏼😊
You should react to Pet Shop Boys - Always on my mind
Ben Walker so glad someone else suggested this!!
The music from The 80's and 90's is The Best!!! Greetings from Argentina!!
Midge Ure “If I Was” and Kim Wilde “You Came” - Two of the best songs of the 80’s...
Check out, Being Boring, by the Pet Shop Boys. Great song and video! Cheers!
One of the greatest songs ever. Deathless music. I'd throw King's Cross in the same category.
Their best song. I love it.
As nearly always with the best PSB tracks, you need the extended version with the huge layered, gradually building intro.
@@jivebunny3765, the 12" version of Being Boring might be TOO MUCH. It might be like if you've been starved of nutrition for a long time and then have a large doner kebab for your first meal. Your system can't handle it. Let him start with the 7"/album version.
@@thisworldofwater8017 True. See where you're coming from.
Pet shop boys had a song called "Heart" that they wrote for Madonna, but it was never offered to her because they didn't think it was good enough, so they release it themselves , please check It out 😃
Yasssss :D
@@crushedguy A badass piece of pop music.
And great video with Mr. Gandalf as a vampire :)
I’m pretty sure in interviews the PSBs have said they had Hazell Dean in mind for Heart.
@@Neonstrobelight100 This was written by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe during sessions for their first album, Please, in 1986. The duo was going to offer it to Madonna or Hi-NRG singer Hazell Dean, but they eventually decided to record it themselves. It was originally called "Heartbeat," but the title was altered because Culture Club's Jon Moss had just started a band called Heartbeat UK. Chris Lowe was unenthuastic about the song's potential, so Neil Tennant reworked the chord structure with producer Andy Richards and it landed on Pet Shop Boys' second album, Actually.
Still got this on original 7" vinyl from the 80s. One of their very best tracks.
OMG I love that you’re reacting to PSB.
For me this group made such great songs that have lasted the test of time. This album; 'Actually' & 'Very', are my favorite.
Actually what you are trying to say is that you love the melody, performed by the synths.
Songs back then had melodies.
Dereck, thank you for reacting to one of my all time favorite songs from the incredible Pet Shop Boys. Try listening to It Couldn’t Happen Here a haunting response to the AIDS epidemic. The Pet Shop Boys always offer incredible lyrics with incredible music.
Mega band and still going strong & touring next year and can’t wait !!! As for songs to react to they have soooo many ! From West End Girl, Rent, Suburbia, Domino Dancing & Opportunities to more recent songs like Se A Vida E, New York City Boy, The Sodom & Gomorrah Show, The Way It Used To Be, Dreamland & Monkey Business from the latest release (last 2 tracks) amazing live band too, listen and watch to the Concrete show & the Live in Rio show where they play to over 100,000 fans !!!! Stunning shows !
Love love love PSB !!!
Left to my own devices from the album introspective, that song had a massive production (trevor horn), it took months to finish; and was a hell to produce. you have vocals, orchestra, synths and drum machines.
Certainly one of the greatest singles of the 80's. And there were many more to come after this; What have I done to deserve this?, Rent, Always on my mind, Heart (wich was at one stage planned to be given to Madonna!), Domino dancing, Left to my own devices, It's alright, So hard, Being boring ...
Pet Shop Boys were almost always a great musical sound. Even in covering Elvis Presely in "Always On My Mind", they weremore music production than Elvis could ever dream of. That's why their version was so suv\ccessful on its own merit.
one of my favs songs of pet shop boys, great video
Escuchando a los PSB desde el 86'.💪🏻💪🏻👏🏻👏🏻, Maestros de Maestros.
This is my childhood! There is a video for this song from their movie "It couldn't happen here", it also features many of their hits from that time. Also their live perfomances 😍 i suggest you live in rio 1994 and songs like Paninaro, What have i done to deserve this and Rent
Such a great Pet Shop Boys song! The video is just as powerful. ~Chris
The extended 12" of this is amazing. I highly recommend any of Pet Shop Boys extend versions. More of an experience.
Can I request you react to Annie Lennox "Why"
Thanks for your continued reactions.
Yes, 💯 percent!
This is my favourite PSB song and my favourite song of all time. ❤
If you like this try Bring Boring, Rent, Jealousy, Left to my Own Devices, Suburbia, Can You Forgive Her? Pet Shoo Boys are still going strong with a new album released earlier this year.
What a terrific singer.
I love the 80s. Give me ALL of the big synths
Speaking of big synths, I nominate Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart'
This is the single that got me into collecting music on a hardcore level....
this song is the best LGBT anthem!!! Neil rocks!
Odd as its meant as a Catholic anthem..
@@cappaculla Neil actually said that this song was about him coming to terms with his homosexuality
He is shocked how much better music was back then..
Listen to the lyrics all through this song. It's heavy and so good.
Yay!! Another one I have been waiting for thanks🤗❤
I have watched a few of these "Reaction" videos from a few different young RUclipsrs such as yourself. I am in my late 40s and the ONLY reason why I have watched some of these videos that's popped up in my recommendations is because I'm literally looking for insults and disrespectful comments about the best era in music in my lifetime. I literally come here hoping for a chance to start an argument and to defend my childhood... lol... But, what I've gotten so far from what few of these "reaction" videos I've watched from your generation is heartwarming and makes me proud! You're keeping the greats alive and that deserves respect in itself. And the fact that you do your homework and history on these artists for these videos deserves major respect.
But, I am curious.... Why do you do these Reaction Videos? Was it because of how amazingly well you were apparently raised or is it something else? Personally, I think it's because your generation has been cheated out of experiencing your own generation of talent in the music industry... I'm old enough to see that the music industry alone has deteriorated at a rapid rate over the past 20 years... I have two sons your age and I raised them up on 60s, 70s, and mainly 80s and early 90s music. In return, they have introduced me to some of the what I would consider talented artists today... 21 Pilots, Charlie Puth, Sam Smith, and a few others.. Your generation does have a few, but not even close to the music industry we had and could brag about 25 plus years ago. Hence, your "Reaction Videos."
Just a little tip if I may.. Sometimes while listening to 80s music, you just need to close your eyes and listen.. Although I am also a huge fan of the very creative music videos, sometimes I also got more out of music just by closing my eyes and listening. The music video can consume your attention away from the meaning of the song.
I think I speak for all of the TRUE 80s kids nowadays when I can respectfully say, Thank you! Keep up this great work you're doing.
"For the 80s this is not bad"?
The 80s was THE decade of music videos. ;-)
You should definitely check out (and react to) the likes of A-ha "Take On Me" and Peter Gabriel "Sledgehammer". Both are mind blowing milestones. And amazing songs, too.
Awesome but been reacted to by every man and his dog already.
Also dire straits " money for nothing " first ever music video on MTV' Europe
Thank you beautiful Dereck, for reacting to IT'S A SIN of Pet Shop Boys, my favorite band. I am moved to tears that the new generation also likes these unforgettable songs. You must see the live concert held in Rio de Janeiro Brazil. I leave you the link ruclips.net/video/7A76yhEn6xI/видео.html
I love this song & The Pet Shop Boys. Song reminds me of my childhood. Born in 1982 baby 39 yrs old now.
The darkness in "It's A Sin" always reminded me of the similar atmosphere in their 2nd U.S. single (my favorite), "Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money)" which reached #10 in the U.S./#11 in the UK. And listening along with Dereck and his commentary today, I realized that the dark atmosphere and orchestra also are reminiscent of A-ha's "The Sun Always Shines On TV." I'd love for Dereck to react to both "Opportunities" and "The Sun Always Shines On TV."
brenspin the sun alway shines on tv. YES!!!!
Il a fait pas mal de titres de A-Ha
Love your reaction. I am a big Psb fan.
You first words when reacting to this song were "Holy Crap!" Yes, exactly and literally.
I just knew you'd love this.
Try "Heart" next and "It's Alright". And then for some Latin flavor "Domino Dancing".
My favourite out of many is “left to my own devices”
@@bobtrouper The remixes from the Pandemonium and Super tours are excellent!
This is one of the coolest, most interesting songs I've ever heard. I see you like good synth, so do I. You should hear C.C Catch "Are You Serious" (1988) and "Backseat of Your Cadillac" (1987), she has others, too. A female voice with beautiful synth is exquisite. I highly recommend you explore C.C. Catch. From 1986 to 1989, she had like 25, 30 great songs. A was a conspiracy why she was kept away from the U.S. airwaves and MTV.
This song is on my top-10 best songs ever made
Hay dude!.. I was 13 when I heard this song. Many decades ago..Lol
It still feels fresh when I heard it back then.
The pet shop boys created the best eighties song ever!!
The best!!
Happy you reacted to it!!
Been listening to all these new reaction videos of the millennials first time listening for about 30 to 37 years. Where have you all been. Lol I guess not born yet. I was 13 in 1984 and you wouldn't or could not imagine how fun it was growing up to all this, and millions of other songs and bands.
And the video was by Derek Jarman - fantastic gay director
A synthpop classic🇬🇧🔥🔥
I love 80s and I love you 💋🥰😍
Je viens d'écouter ta réaction à Domino Dancing. Merci c'était super j'ai adoré ce titre. Et celui ci aussi évidemment. Souvenirs 😢😢😢❤❤❤
Excelente reacción,me gusta mucho esta canción,saludos galán.
I love those lyrics
I never heard this version. I only heard this song when Ghost covered it. Both versions are great.
I still have the 7" single of this and it still sounds great when it's cranked up loud. Swedish band Ghost did a cover of It's a sin a few years ago and it is great. The beat actually feels a little more dancey. They use a church pipe organ in the intro! And don't forget the electric guitars! Check it out. Love your reactions.
Inquisición, Torquemada.... It's a sin. Cuántos "Torquemadas" quedan hoy día? Cuántos sistemas inquisitoriales hay?. La lista es larguiiiisssimaa.. La lucha sigue tan vigente casi como en la época del "torque'.
Please take consideration on react to the remake of Always On My Mind by Pet Shop Boys. You will surely be amazed by the layering of the instrument and music
The Always on Mind/In My House remix is the best.
Amazing song, always loved the PSBs. Always On My Mind is my gave song of there's, even more amazing considering its a cover of an Elvis Presley song
You do it again Derek I love the let shop boys as well as Madonna I love your reviews I hope you do more
Your amazing and very good looking stunner
Thank you
We need you to react to the legends that are Duran Duran 🙂
Stephen Duke YES DURAN DURAN.
Hey dereck your a great guy great job handsome cute too love your vids keep on doing them 😁 x
Just wait till you see HBO's Its A Sin! #itsasin - Feburary 18th - 5 part series
An outstanding song more so for the lyrics but the music is great too.really great video dereck. Would love to hear you're reaction to soft cell say hello wave goodbye.
As a kid of the 80ties I love the Pet Shop Boys. Did you ever review Let's make lots of money?
A good friend of mine went out with Neil Tennant for a while. I met him a few times. Lovely bloke, very friendly and chatty.
Nice review!
I was 10 when this came out,it is epic then and it is epic now! Cheers from Croatia!
Check out the pet shop boys video for "Heart". You'll love it.
It's basically to do with his Catholic upbringing. No matter what he's done in the past, now and in the future it's a sin.
Can you please do a reaction to "I don't want a lover" by Texas. It's an amazing song from roughly the same time as this video.
Wooo!!!! Mi favorita😍 enormes !!!!!!
This video was the first collaboration with the film maker Derek Jarman.
The theme reminded me of Madonna's "Like a Prayer".
I love the Pet Shop Boys. They never got much play on the radio or at straight clubs. The gay bars always have the best dance music.
Dereck you are absolutely gorgeous. Beautiful man. I am so happy that you like this song. One of my most very favourites,
PSB are awesome!!
You should check out their 1988 video of the single "Heart".
That epic video was shot in former Yugoslavia (now Slovenia). Hilarious masterpiece. It was filmed at Mokrice castle; Sir Ian McKellen "Gandalf" - played the "Vampire". Great fun!! That song was a huge hit in the UK, in Germany, etc.!
The lyrics are to be listened in combination with the superbe synth vibes!
If you like synths check out Yazoo's "DON'T GO".
Great video, reaction to inxs are very good band 👋🏻❤️
And now "It's a Sin" is an awesome TV Mini Series. Please watch.
what a great reaction to a great Song. You are the first REACTOR who speak about the dramatic of the Song ..sorry, but i have to suscribe...
PSB have so many amazing songs, but I’m willing to bet It’s A Sin is at the very top of any PSB fan’s favorite song list.
Weeelll, not everyone's, but I do see why people love it. I rate Being Boring, King's Cross, Love Comes Quickly, This Must Be The Place I Waited Years To Leave, My October Symphony, Rent, Domino Dancing, I Made My Excuses And Left, Twentieth Century, I'm Not Scared and Vocal, among others, way above It's A Sin.
Pet Shop Boys always rocks 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Please, react to A-ha. They’re not a one-hit-wonder band. They are amazing! (Songs: Take on Me, Scoundrel Days Live, Velvet, The Sun Always Shines on Tv, Summer Moved On, Minor Earth Major Sky).
I’ve Been Losing You
Lifelines is one of my favourites..
Andi MusicJunkie mine too, all the album, mainly White Canvas
For me, Take On Me is nowhere near their best. Hunting High And Low (the single version!), Manhattan Skyline, I've Been Losing You, Stay On These Roads, Summer Moved On. Majestic music.
@@thisworldofwater8017 Oh yes, Manhattan Skyline is great but you have to hear it loud...
Heart, I want to wake up, So hard. To name a few.I can go on and on. Pet shop boys were never really promoted much here in the U.S. on the radio.Dance clubs, alternative music clubs and of course gay clubs had everyone dancing. Did you hear me coming? Is another masterpiece. Just my 2 cents. Good day.
I recommend you the ‘live in Rio’ version
I'm not gay but as a Catholic this song hit me as I love PSB and I thought the song at the time was incredibly brave but so sad as a kid when it was released. I learned very early on to judge people by their deeds.
A lot of symbolism on the viedo:
- The idea of the video comes from the Spanish Inquisition with its leader Torquemada
- It reflects the Seven Deadly Sins: gluttony, lust, greed, pride, wrath, envy and sloth
- The final part of the song Neils is reciting a part of the Confiteor in Latin and you can listen a choir in the background. Some sounds were recorded at locations such as Westminster Cathedral
PSB has many hits, I hope you give a chance to more PSB songs, they are great.
I recommend to you this:

Yes, it's true. But the Spanish is more popular.

Sorrow is not a deadly sin. The one you missed was avarice.
You would love Domino Dancing from them. My favorite PSB song
I'm Swiss. A fellow Swiss, artist Annakin, made a fantastic (string) cover of this.

Hey, Derek! If you can listen to It's A Sin live (from the Concrete album with orchestra) I am sure you will love it.
You will love the Pet shop boys "2009 BRIT Awards performance" Lady Gaga appears in the end. 💕
I’m half in love with you:) only because you enjoy great music of course....try Teri desario, ain’t nothing gonna keep me ...my favorite 80s song
It's not only gay issue. Heterosexual like me also struggle with this.
I knew you would like this.
