Jimmy Sommerville is one of the purest and bravest soul in music
I agree
Absolute TUNE. Total floor filler in the 80s. Props to Jimmy too, he never pretended to be anything but who he was unapologetically out and proud.
He did more for the gay community that he will ever know, trailblazer
It's because of people like Jimmy that the UK gave up on hating on homosexuality way before the US could even entertain the idea.
@@jonnylumberjack6223 I think 'became more accepting' is more positive and accurate than 'gave up on hating' !!!
@Ann Other same thing really
@Ann Other are you a woman so you don't understand women never do
Richard Cole (on piano) went on to become my local vicar. No joke, he's now a vicar.
i like his sense or humor
Just retired.
Jimmy is an iconic singer. He has three iterations in his career. Bronski Beat, The Communards, and his solo career. My favorite is his solo work. He is amazing.
If this song doesn't get you on the dance floor everytime, then you need to be hugged more! So many memories!
I’m having so much fun with you on this trip ! For you own education - you have to do some Alison Moyet / Yazoo . This 80s era of Pet Shop boys , erasure , Bronski Beat , DEPECHE MODE -and New Order hell throw in some Rick Astley and Kylie form that era is the stuff I grew up with. !
me too
Yazoo - Don't Go! amazing song.
alison moyet / yazoo sooo good
Alison Moyet post Yaz is awesome.
Saw Alison Moyet and Tears For Fears live last year, both were outstanding👌🏻
Grace Jones
Slave to the rythem
Oh absolutely. This!!!!!
Oh. Yes. Miss. Grace. Jones. Slave. To the rhythm. Two giants: Grace + Trevor Horn.
Oh yes he needs to hear and react to Grace & that's the perfect song.
horribile
Love the Communards, with their female backing band and Sarah Jane Morris on guest vocals. Also features the most famous female drummer of the 80's in England June Miles Kingston. Famously it was No1 for weeks here in the UK and when the band went onto Top of the Pops Jimmy and Sarah mimed each others parts rather than their own. I'd recommend For a friend which Jimmy wrote about his friend Mark Ashton who died of Aids in the 80's. His story was featured in the movie Pride.
For A Friend makes me weep buckets.
When Bronski Beat released their first single in 1983, they came out as gay immediately. They did it so that the homophobic press wouldn't find out and make up nasty, innuendo laden stories about them. By coming out, they retained a certain level of control. This was a brave thing to do; the AIDS crisis had begun and the homophobic press were all calling it the 'gay plague'. But Bronski Beat and later The Communards held their heads high and made great dance music that often had a subtle political message. And the fact that Don't Leave Me This Way was number one in the UK charts for so long is testament to their broad appeal; they were loved by millions of people who weren't LGBT+. But they meant a lot to LGBT+ people at the time because they were the first to openly make pop music about the gay experience, and it was the soundtrack to a lot of gay people's lives and told their stories. Jimmy is still singing, and Richard Coles is now the Reverend Richard Coles, an Anglican vicar and radio presenter, still openly gay, and a wonderfully warm, funny and down to earth human being.
Jimmy Somerville's successful late-'80s cover of Sylvester's classic disco track "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" is worth a listen (and look).
Geat tune too 👍🎧🎶
Just to let you know that Richard Coles is now a Church of England Priest!!
Love him on QI
He’s left the church now but a better person for it.
@@allthesevens7033 I agree
Man, it's a pleasure to watch someone enjoy this song as much as I did when I when it came out.
Ahhhhhhhhhhh baby!!!!!! Wee Jimmy Summerville brilliant... He is from Scotland UK.
Re leaving my eighties youth.. thanks dude.. That's what you call music..Lol
A well done interpretation of "Don't Leave Me This Way" done in a Synth-pop style. It differs from Thelma's American Disco version from 1977 and Jeanie Tracy's Hi-NRG version from 1985 version. To be fair, I do enjoy all three versions because all three versions are different takes on the same great song. All three versions became successful amongst various areas in the LGBT communities.
And Melvin and the Bluenotes original (75)
Jimmy is such a down to earth dude. His brother lives around the corner from me. Super humble folk. Scotland is mighty proud of his achievements.
Find the 12" remix version of this song if you really want your mind blown. I can get so lost in that version.
Challenge accepted.
Jimmy has made some cracking songs over the years. To Love Somebody and Hurts So Good are brilliant.
The female vocalist is Sarah Jane Morris.
thank you- I was looking through comments to see if anyone knew.
Did he even mention her vocals?
twin vocl range voice of Alison Moyet
I've watched this vid twice and danced on my balcony! Ha ha.... Greetings from Germany.
I'm glad you're doing this. I legit feel like we're all clubbing together all week long. Keep 'em coming!
The video doesn't show enough of the drummer June Miles-Kingston .... She is amazing ❤️
THANK YOU SO FUCKING MUCH!!! I've searched for her name so long!
She was in Fun Boy Three too. Amazing musician
@@liquidninja6654 she is in Feargal Sharkey's "You little thief" too
Absolutely!!
@@Spinni my pleasure
Am addicted to your channel !!
The keyboard player is now a Church of England vicar
You simply must listen to "You are my world" by The Communards. The intro is literally everything!!!
Agreed, but it's a shame the chorus is so poor.
The strings! Richard Coles' piano! Utterly gorgeous
@@vermilliongecko Coles is becomed a Reverend
Reading the comments I'd like to also put a word in for Grace Jones,( Pull Up To The Bumper, Private Life, Warm Leatherette maybe) and Alison Moyet, ( All Cried Out, Is This Love, Whispering Your Name maybe). Great reactions.
YES! I have been trying to get reactors to check this one out for quite a while now!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I was dancing to this every time it was played back in the 80’s - and was fortunate enough to see them live too, such amazing performers
All I have to say, besides that your analyzes are accurate because you're very professional ... is that I love your reactions !
Your expressions, your gestures, your emotions .... wow, I love them!
What about you, boy ... that you have a 80's soul !
😉
the biggest selling song in the uk in 1986,i was 16 lol, u should look at marc almond and gene pitney, somethings got a hold of my heart,or marc almond and bronski beat , i feel love. its apt for pride month
Hi Dereck, I'm fathoming that the strange guys at the end represented the anti-gay attitudes that were around from the mid-80s through the very early-90s, where mainstream-media was often anti-gay, and just focussed on stereotypes and negatives view about anyone in th e LGBTIQA+ community back then, as gay men were also being scapegoated for HIV/AIDS, even though all walks of life could spread it it they're not safe (but minorities are always the one who are there to blame for the world's woes).
Those guys could also have been a metaphor for the censorship of even simple non-heteronormative things of the time and/or the could have represented the extremely conservative Margaret Thatcher government in the UK at the time (which was in cahoots with the Regan government), and they brought 'Clause 28' aka 'Section 28' into the UKwhere anything homosexual couldn't be 'promoted' (similar to what Russia has in law for these days). Here's a Wikipedia account of that old homophobic and destructive British legislation: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_28
I knew someone would say it, in more detail than I would, I would have just simply mentioned that it was the censorship of the time. Mary f***ing Whitehouse and company.
Absolutely react to Grace Jones 'Slave To The Rhythm'. Preferably the 12 inch extended version. It's a work of art.
True 100 and 1%.!!!
I remember dancing to this way back then. I relived it with your own enthusiasm. I love 80s music. Great reaction and thank you.
Hi Dereck . Thank you for bringing back so many memories . Being in my late 60s this song is one of many I used to go out and dance to in the night clubs around Manchester here in the UK.
#1 in the UK singles chart for 6 weeks I think. Yes, it's a cover version, but they absolutely nailed this and turned a disco classic in to a pop extravaganza.
Glad you enjoy my suggestion 😎
Thelma Houston originally released this in 1977, if I recall. I used to have the 45.
Originaly a hit for harold malvin and the blue notes in '76, a soul classic!
The excitement on your face is amazing. Love it !!!!!
Wonderful song. So positive.
The guy playing the piano (Richard Coles) is now a Vicar/Priest
I was about to say, when he mentioned Richard: "I think you mean The Reverend Richard Coles."
I spent my youth dancing 💃 to this music , great 👍 to hear it again. Bringing working class and sexuality to the forefront. Artists rather than celebrities! Joan from Edinburgh
Try fine young cannibals-suspicious minds. Jimmy Somerville sings in this braw song👍
I think this released in 86 and it was an anthem thevfloor was packed and everybody was hopping to this.
Great reaction thank you again! The guys in the glasses are a nod to George Orwell's 1984. Check out "Sex Crime" by Eurythmics which was from the soundtrack! x
so appropriate now with the covid lockdowns- in NYC dancing is prohibited.
Reminds me so much of the warehouse Parties a.k.a. raves from back in the 80s, Some would be shut down council because they were illegal..
Dereck, the joy on your face from this video just makes my heart smile! :)
Love, love, love this! ♥️♥️♥️
The keyboard player is now probably the most famous vicar in Britain
Had many a dance to this way back in the 80s(great reaction 👏💯 spot on about your explanation about the song and Jimmy)
One of most favourite music videos of all time! Brilliant!
I am in love with Sarah Jane Morris all
Over again!!! That husky voice. So cute and such talent. Now I gotta google her and see what she’s up to. Thanks for doing this video Derek.
The Communards had some great songs. Richard Coles is now a Church of England vicar.
For Pride week, listen to Bronski Beat and Small Town Boy. More Jimmy.
Richard Coles (on piano) is now a Church of England vicar.
I've got small town boy already please see the end of the video for the link!
@@DereckReacts I just spotted that (slinks away red faced)
My favourite song of all time ♥️♥️♥️
Lol - I love your reaction here. You were so totally blown away I couldn't stop laughing.
This song takes me back to my high school days.
check out There's More to Love than Boy Meets Girl by same band
great song
My fav song too
Glad you liked this. Like your reactions. Keep it up young man.
This was the coolest song back in the day!
🔥🔥🔥. Great reaction bruv 👌
Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round, pleaseeeeeee 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Now you need to check out the original version of this song by Thelma Houston.
Exactly! The #11 Best selling single worldwide for the year of 1977. The Communards version from 1986 failed to Chart as World Wide Year End best selling singles. Yet this version did got to #04 on European Hot 100 (and #01 in UK) but stopped at #40 in US Billboard Hot 100 while Thelma Houston was #01 back in 1977. In Europe Thelma Houston song version did good too. The original version it's not from Thelma Houston, she also did a cover. The original version was released in 1975 by Harold Melvin & Bluenotes and was fast R&B/Blues not disco.
As far as club hit... both Thelma Houston and The Communards version were big club hits though Thelma Houston version was and still is a bigger club Anthem.
seriously!! This version was utter garbage. But Thelma's original reigns supreme!
@@herobreaker9011 In USA maybe. In the UK the Communards was a much bigger hit and a big number 1. As a UK teenager growing up in the 80s this was massive and an anthem of the times. The Thelma Houston track is indeed great, but of a different era - her singing is epic, but the soundtrack is average 70s stuff.
I thought the original version was Harold Melvin & the blue notes
Hers was was a cover too. Teddy Pendergast when he was in Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes was before Thelma Houston.
It gave me Dead or Alive vibes... Do you know Dead or Alive? You must react to Come home with me baby in this pride week.... or You spin me round... amazing band!!!
If I'm correct in thinking. This song was originally done by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. Not Thelma Houston.
Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes is by far the definitive version. Please give it a listen.
I love this so much. On an 80s kick
TUNE! (Sigh. Memories, memories, memories)
Dance floor in the 80's....was filled with this tune.....so glad I was in my teens in the 80's...really sorry you kids of today haven't experienced ...such super tunes as this!!!
Bronski Beat was One of the first out Gay groups, their first album was nothing but extreme RISE UP and joyful Gay anthems, Smalltown Boy and Why. Bronski and Jimmy on their own and solo continued with songs like this and I feel Love and Hit That Perfect Beat. They were such a blessing to the Gay community in the 80's and 90's. Out loud and proud and with no apologies Bronski, Jimmy, Communards, Alphaville, New Order and Depeche Mode saved a lot of young Gay and Lesbian lives with their unapologetic and pride inducing music. They were a SUPER positive influence on me and my emotional well being. They were, and still are, Pure Joy.
Lovely song, thank you Dereck very much.
It is a complete orchestra yeah.
Ostras!!!(se puede decir,no?). Cuantas horas no me habré tirado bailando ..... buenos recuerdos. Genial Dereck
He's now the Reverend Richard Coles
The book at the beginning and the guy who shut them down they are the Ministry it's of Culture.
We danced a million steps to this at the after hours clubs! Absolute great tune!
This is a cover of the version by Thelma Houston who made the most popular version of the song. She was also the aunt of Whitney Houston. It was Thelma's only top 40 hit but it went to the top of both the Pop and Disco charts, making it Thelma's biggest hit record. It was also one of the most memorable songs of the Disco Era of the 70's.
Gloria Gaynor's answer to this song is called I Will Survive and the two songs should be heard together as a pair, starting with Don't leave Me This Way first.
Thelma Houston is NOT related to Whitney Houston.
Love it!! ❤️❤️
There was so many and great british pop groups in the 80s, you can do reactions with them for years!
Listening to you/ jimmy again !! Fabulous !!
Derek this is an absolaue 80's iconic track, but the book and the page being stamped with the word "Banning" is a reference to Section 28 an anti gay law that came into effect in the 80's in the UK arounf the Aids crisis. Jimmy was also a brillaint political activist and worked with groups like Act Up. But despite the climate at the time this song was so uplifting and it still is today.Jimmy was always and still is out and proud in a most unapologetic way.I still love this song today.(matt)P.S back in the day I had such a man crush on Richard Coles!! who is now Reverand Ricahard Coles.
Hi from a new sub. This song is just fantastically fandabeedozee. I love it. Great vid.
No any words about great back vocals (and voice) from Sarah Jane Morris. Unbelieved!
I think he thought Sarah was Richard Coles! 😂 (Well, anything was possible in the 80s!)
Absolute fun to dance to on the dance floor. And we would all shout out the AWWWWWW part and chorus! Great times!
The piano player is the Reverend Richard Coles of Finedon in Northamptonshire
G'day it's Steven from down
I have lots of memories attached to this song when it was first released, my first girl friend and dancing to this in Sydney dance clubs, this is better than the original.
Thanks Steve
This song is an absolute banger, love it.
Thanks for your reaction. I LOVE Jimmy Sommerville 🤩 Greetings from Norway 🇳🇴
Happy pride month xxx
Jimmy was smart about using his high notes. He would leave you hoping for more. Then he delivered live, and if he wasn’t able to go supremely high in concert you could never say he bailed on trying to hit that perfect note.
J'adore tellement cette musique 🎶
This was actually recorded by Thelma Houston when she recorded for Motown in the 1970's. Her backing Vocals also sang Backup for Rick James You & I. The biggest irony was that it was Written by Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff who helped epitomize The Philly Soul Sound that really took off in 1975. Kenny & Leon were already Songwriter and Producers in the 1960's and Kenny worked with Daryl Hall when he was in a Group called The Temptones. Jimmy was also in The Bronski Beat as you know who had the Hit Small Town Boy. Also keep in mind that in The UK The Music Of Motown & Philly is just as strong as ever. Many of their songs are heard on Soap Operas, TV Series and alot of Boy Band/Girl Group Icons do "Covers" either on Pop Idol or other Shows. It's a Blessing because if The US Songwriter still "Owns" The Rights to the Song, they get "Paid".
She was second - recorded it in '76. But it was first recorded in '75 by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes - worth checking out for yet another different take on the song. :-)
Never Can Say Goodbye - The Communards has a similar vibe
Sarah Jane Morris sung with the Communards in 'Don't leave me this way' - fabulous!!
This song was so modern that the Philips Company used it for the famous "brand new" Compact Disc TV ad.
If you like the musical arrangements, I recommend The Communards You Are My World, with strings.
Everytime i hear this music on my playlist i just stay and sing it haha, old but gold, old music will always be the best, wish we can go back in time where music was good.
Love me some Jimmy!
Never get any better than this not possible
Dereck, if you love this, you are likely to love Dan Hartman. Relight My Fire and/or Instant Replay. Disco with tunes and high energy. Also looking forward to seeing more Sylvester reactions.
Utterly awesome music and video!
Merci Dereck pour vos vidéos, vous illuminez mes journées. Les Communard était un groupe fantastique et Jimmy Summerville a une voix imcomparable... thank you very much.
It was the 80s. The video has a communists feel which was very strong in the 80's. Communards also did a cover of the Jackson 5, Never Can Say Goodbye. Give it a listen. Another great rendition.
