JImmy Sommerville was also in Bronski Beat. Their big hit was "Smalltown Boy". That song would be a good one to react to.
If only I could've really taken that song to heart back in the day. I was a big-city boy, religious family, struggling with my feelings. Yup, I was gay, but oh, was I having trouble accepting myself and going forward. I had no clue who I could talk to, for sure not my parents, and yeah, I wanted to be with someone, but was so repressed, I just couldn't figure out how to make it work. I wish some friend back then had somehow gotten through to me, past all that, to tell me it was OK, I wasn't the only one, despite how other guys acted, or, somehow, to get through to me it was OK to be with someone, together. I wanted that, I just couldn't get past things enough to find someone or let them find me. -- I managed to stand up and speak up for two or three friends who were getting bullied, gossiped about, threatened with real physical harm, but I couldn't quite stand up for myself back then. The song played around when I was in college, I think it came out after I was out of high school. I remember skipping past it on cable TV (MTV or VH1), not realizing what it was, or else too skittish to let myself stop and listen. Sure would've given a lot if one or two friends I'd had crushes on growing up had liked me back. -- And I have no idea what ModernRenaissanceMan thinks about that, but it's what's true for me. -- I wish this world would quit hating, fearing, and excluding LGBT folks. I grew up with that and it has changed too little in all this time. There has been some progress, but a lot of the same old phobias are still there. -- I eventually came out after my parents were gone. I wish I'd been able to come out in high school or college, or heck, in junior high, but that would have been especially unlikely back then.

@@benw9949 Back in the "forbidden" days my best friend was actually gay, we were the most messed up duo in town. His fear was real and I was never allowed to reveal to anyone about his nature, it took him 15 years to actually come forward when "acceptance" became a thing. I was just as messed up, egocentric and a narcissist with no equal, I was so in love with myself that him being gay only added fuel to the fire as he thought I was a good looking guy, of course I liked him in a platonic way. Eventually I matured, so did he, unlike many though I do not miss those times.
....Jimmy Somerville😊
Not to mention the Donna Summer cover “I Feel Love” and I also liked “Cadillac Cars”
Have fond memories of bouncing around to this in clubs in the 80's.
Dido👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💜💜✌🏾✌🏾
The pianist later became The Reverend Richard Coles, who appears regularly on BBC.
Man, the lead singer (Jimmy Sommerville) had a really unique voice. I'm not even sure he's going falsetto there. But he had a true talent and it sounded great. Man, the 80's. -- The mixing of styles here was going on a lot with the good bands back then. I'm sure Prince, The Communards, Bronski Beat, a bunch of others, all knew about each other's music and drew inspiration from each other. Likewise other big groups back then.
The Communards, Jimmy Somerville...just timeless! Love them and him to this day.
This is a 1975 song by Harold Melvin(Teddy Pendergrast)&the Bluenotes. Thelma Houston went to #1 w/this as a Disco song in 1977& won a Grammy for Best R&B Female Vocal Performance. 🤗
Thank you!! Thelma rocked it and I still have to rollerskate to it bc I grew up with my grandma playing it. I thought she was the original, HT!
Both version…Thelma (Whitney Houston’s aunt) or Jimmy brought the dance floor alive!
i was a dj, was a heavy rotation for late night...when the crowd was fizzeling...this was a reset the floor song.
The original was by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes with Teddy Pendergrass on lead vocals 1977 and then Thelma Houston 1978
Popular in Australia's gay bars at the time.. Still has good vibes to it! 😀
Popular in every gay bar anywhere at the time.
Just loved Jimmy Sommerville!! Amazing guy. He's from Glasgow, Scotland. Born in 1961. Earns 10 million dollars I believe??
Jimmy Somerville is one of the most Under rated singers ever. He deserves better
YES!
I danced to this alot in the 80ties
Richard Coles ( the piano player in this video) is now a church minster who does religious programmes for the BBC
The drummer is June Miles-Kingston.
My brothers friends queued for 6 hours to be extras in this video. It was filmed at Royal Albert Dock in London.
Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy
Fab eighties, had a very short hair cut back then and for some unknown reason had the Union Jack spray painted on the whole of my hair at a country fayre, rebel without a clue
Anyone who has a black grandma knows that this is from Thelma Houston and she killed it! Both are good, but the cutest one is him walking up to a street busker and joining in.
Sara Miles Kingston ai the female singer. She guested on this with the Communards. Please check out Fergal Sharkey - a good heart and Tpau - China in your head. Another 2 songs that defined the 80s in Britain.
another great song/video by the Communards is "Never Can Say Goodbye'
Rev. Richard Coles (pianist) lost his long term partner last year. He is often on BBC Radio 4 and occasionally on UK TV.
the singer is from bronski beat, small town boy is their biggest song. this reaction was fun, thank you
This is a classic. Run Away by the Communards is another great requested song to listen too Tye
Whoa, I haven't heard this in so long, I'd Beverly forgotten it. And I'd never seen the video to it. -- Communards, pronounced almost like Communist or Community, Comm-yoo-nahrdz -- ah instead of uh at the end, sort of like a Jacquard sweater or tie, rhyme with hards or leotards. -- Man, the 80's, high school and college....
Jimmy Sommerville was a leading figure in British pop music of the 80's. His magical voice can be heard when he was with Bronski Beat, The Communards and his solo career. His activism against homophobia and rally cry against AIDS was groundbreaking. He is still as amazing and relative now as he was in the 80's. Did I mention that angelic voice?!
Pure celebration - always killed (kills) at clubs back in the day!!
Thelma Houston did this song in 1977 during the disco era. This was a huge hit and a great song to dance to. If you can find the long version. you'll love it .This was originally done in 1975 by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. The lead singer was Teddy Pendergrass who was fantastic and just killed it. Another song he did was 'Bad Luck" in 1975 an R&B / disco classic. If you can please react to both versions of 'Don't leave me this way" You will love them both.
This wasn't by Prince, It's a cover of an original by Thelma Houston which is a legit classic. And we all heard it first on dance floors at gay clubs. That's where we heard it.
The Communards, Jimmy Somerville...just timeless! Love them and him to this day.
Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy
Play Bronski Beat "Small-town boy"
It's Com-U-Nards. As a kid I thought it was hilarious that she had a deeper voice than Jimmy. Jimmy Somerville had 2 bands, The Communards and Bronski Beat, I think he had a solo career as well. This is a cover of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes original in 1975
Wow! Haven't heard this song in years - WTG👍🏿 thanks Ty - enjoyed seeing and hearing it again 😍🇦🇺
Can you please, please, please react to some level 42,lessons in love or something about you, they where quite a big 80s band in the 80s in the UK.
the REAL Communards were a radical political French group in the late 1800s, that took control over a large Paris neighborhood. and turned it communist. it lasted about 2 months. (the band was named after the French communists) thanks for the review.
No one talk about the fact that Jimmy was a gay Icone but really respected for what he was 1st : a great singer.
all over the radio back then. I'm a big fan of JS (/BB/TC). I love his voice, his dancing and all the songs, from slow and sorrowful to high enery disco. not to forget the Czárdás in between.
Iconic 80s song in the UK, Jimmy Sommerville left Bronski Beat and formed The Comm-u-nards with Richard Coles (pianist) and were part of an activist organisation called Red Wedge. It was never a long term project the band split after two albums.
You will probably enjoy Erasure if you like this. They did a number of great songs, "Stop", 'Love to hate you", "A Little Respect", "Chains of Love', all really high energy tracks.
Instead of CommunIST, it's CommunARDS. The lead singer, Jimmy Somerville, is a distant cousin. A true taste of the 80s LOL
Not supposed to be like original but this was popular in UK when it came out in the 80s ..in fact this was the biggest-selling single of 1986 in the UK . I was 21 back then and for me even though I love the original by Thelma H this brings back only good memories for me and I was just starting out in life living with my ex hubby in our first home together 🙂👍
Thelma Houston was a disco cover of Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes' original. Its here on RUclips check it out.
I was a child born in 82 so when this was released not sure what was happening in the world but i grew listening to music like this but in our house we had queen elvis culture club erasure i got one for you. Love to hate you by erasure.
Never heard this version. I like it!
You're talking about The Time with Prince and this song was Originally done by Thelma Houston. This version by The Communards was in the UK chart in 86 at the same time I met a beautiful girl who is now my wife. Great memories
No, it wasn't. Thelma Houston's single was a disco cover of Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes' original track from the 1960's.
Yes I had just turned 20 when this song came out. Love the beat to this especially the drums and piano.
The keyboard player is now an Anglican Vicar.
Originally sung by Thelma Houston, then Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes among others. They are both great versions of this old soul classic
I remember when this came out early 1980s love it 💕🇬🇧
This song by Thelma Houston
The best one
song still packs a punch no matter wh sings it...but this one can drive a dancefloor crazy to this day
Wow, this takes me back 😁
This always gets me on the dance floor.
Great song, and I think it was my suggestion too? Or maybe this is one of those songs that have been requested multiple times? Keep up the good work my good man! :)
thelma houston's version in the 70's was awesome....but this version gets you on your feet!
Both did.
Modern Renaissance Man - The Communiards were made up of Jimmy Sommerville - with vocals; a gay Scotsman (formerly of Bronski Beat) and Englishman Richard Coles - a classically trained musician - who is now an Anglican priest!
Prefer the versions by Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes and Thelma Houston...but this is also a great version. Good party record that is sure to get folks up and dancing.
June Miles Kingston on drummers is one hell of a tub thumper
ty , MRD. great song great flashback remake.
Sarah Jane Morris' deep contralto v Jimmy's falsetto was a playful counterpoint in this anthem.
The original verison of this song is better ! &..... Morris day & The Time is "the Prince friend" you are talking about ! The song... "Jungle Love"
oh-ee-oh-ee-oh -- hah-hah! -- I was amazed and perplexed by Prince's movie, Purple Rain, and the songs, but really liked his stuff back then. Morris Day and the Time, I thought they were more just for pure fun, kinda goofy, but maybe I don't know what else they ddi besides the couple of songs that made the mainstream pop rock radio stations back then. -- I'm still impressed by Prince's music. He was unique, kind of a hot mess, brilliant, but hey, everybody's gotta be a little different, and some folks just march to the beat of a different guitarist, you know? ;) Too bad he's gone; he should've been making lots more hits.
,did you ever hear teddy pendagrass dont leave me this way just listen to it
The guest vocalist was the female jazz singer Sarah Jane Morris, whom I love, but this song is still one of the best, but several others also covered it, but this my fav version
An energetic classic with that true eighties vibe to it. You're not the only one who thought of Prince, this isn't as funky but there are certainly some similarities. Another song this instantly reminded me of is "Feargal Sharkey - A Good Heart". It would be great if you could react to that one sometime.
Who are the Communards? Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way" is a masterpiece and this doesn't compare. Please react to Thelma Houston's version. Please, Please, Please!
Great reaction buddy, would you react to PENTATONIX and their DAFT PUNK medley plz. If you haven't seen it your in for an incredible treat. A Capella at its best👍🍀😁
Loved the communards great Scottish80s band
If you are in the mood for a touching tune, try Chris Stapelton " Daddy Doesn't Pray Anymore " I think you will love it!
did it already
ruclips.net/video/FO_nH1-JY94/видео.html
I'm not sure if you have already could you please react to Brian Justin Crum - Creep (Radiohead) performed as a contestant on America's Got Talent. I think you'll appreciate how talented this guy is vocally plus his back story is just heartbreaking.
Zbrilliant loved this song then and still love it now
REO Speedwagon - "Say You Love Me Or Say Goodnight
Please check out Tantric-"Mourning"
Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra feat. Nino Mochella - Kiss the Sky
I like the Disco version better 1976 by Thelma Houston It was 9:06 long.
Use to dance at the Old Plantation to this song.
Miss those great Disco days.
When songs were 10 - 20 minutes long.
I'm 62 still play my 12" extended records.
Originally sung by Thelma Houston, then Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes. Both great versions. Yes I know other people will have recorded this great soul classic too
Other way round.
I am sorry, I like Thelma Huston singing this song. It was OK. I am just not used to cover songs, I never knew what they were until I started watching your channel.
This pre-dated Prince.
This one is okay, but prefer Thelma Houston 😊 if you have not reacted to her version I hope you do 🙏😊
Me, too. Her version is one of my favorite songs.
@@jojoleenhouts1105 👍👍👍👍👍
Something a little different but familiar!! the Tokens live-lion sleeps tonite!!
Com/mu/nards MRM 👍
@@xoxxobob61 bless him it's easily done I guess when you've never heard of them before but American and English pronounce a lot of words different sounding I find 🙂👍
@@xoxxobob61 I didn't think you was Bob that's why i liked your comment
MRM please listen to the original.
The original is so much better ! ✌😎
Play Bronski Beat "Small-town boy"
He reminds me a little of vince clark and andy bell.
You should react to "The Joke" - Brandi Carlile
what about Thelma Houston's rendition--she has this great gospel voice.(even though the song is disco)
Never heard this version, not a fan at all..too pop for me, but hey it was the 80s..LOL..my favorite version will always be the 70s version by Thelma Houston, I can remember dancing to her version in the clubs
Not the original by Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes? Tsk-tsk
It's hi energy music, from the gay clubs.
Definately not just the gay clubs, heard this from the dance floor many times back in the day.
You should react to "The Joke" - Brandi Carlile
Popular in Australia's gay bars at the time.. Still has good vibes to it! 😀
Hello Ty! Blues Traveler-Hook-. Any live version. X
3 songs I would like to see what you think ....1.Ministry-Jesus Built my hotrod..2. Def Leppard-no no no...and Slayer-Bloodline....thanks...love this channel
the Def Leppard song has some of the most complex guitar playing in the back ground I ever heard. this is before they sold out...lol
Hi-NRG
Woohoo👍
Please react to Whitney Houston and Mary J Blige singing Ain’t No Way!!!
Eminence Front by the Who
@ modern renaissance man, would like to hear the song time by the chamber brothers..
This version is just okay, I personally like Thelma Houston's version better.
Mike Adams This version is fantastic and IMO far supersedes the original but each to their own
@@stevetici2668 could be just the nostalgia, because I grew up listening to the original, and it's the version sets best with my ears. :-)
The girl on the drums was a boy.
Nope ..Thelma Houston's original is way better
Thelma Houston is not the original; it's a disco cover of Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes' original track. Lol
ok ..this isn't the original
not as good as the original
Is that an issue?
@@JD-gh4tr yes....it is ...my opinion matters
@@JD-gh4tr you are a year behind
Sup bro can you do a reaction to one of my videos?
Not a fan of covers, but Thelma Houston killed this over the Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, sadly this version needed Sarah Jean's strength as the lead, not as an appearance; his voice is too thin.
Great rendition. Listen to the original from the 70s with Yvonne elleman
Oh sorry, Thelma Houston. Love it
Thelma Houston's single was a disco cover of Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes Original Track from the 1960s.
Love the original song and artist. Not this one...sorry!
