Many fans today who weren't around back then don't realize what a big deal it was when Elliott won the Winston Million. I mean it was a national news story of him chasing that Million. It made the national news and all of the national newspapers. I would assume it went worldwide. It was just unheard of for any athlete to win that much money for one event. Even the Indy 500 didn't pay that much to win in '85. R.J. Reynolds hit a home run with that promotion in '85.

This is the NASCAR i fell in love with. I don't think there is a driver under the age of 25 in this field lol

Kyle Petty debuted at age 18 (and turned 25 shortly before this race), Michael Waltrip at age 21...
The thing is that back then you had to be an adult to just get in a fullsize car, organizations didn't want dead kids. Unless you went from midgets and such straight to NASCAR Cup cars, you had to be 23-25 during your rookie season.

Great effort by Cale. After taking the next four weeks off, he would return to win his final race of his career (The Miller High Life 500 at Charlotte). Get well, Cale. ❤
