Harry Rainer talked Waddell Wilson into switching to a Ford in 1985 and even though Cale won two races the rest of them was disastrous. Ford claimed they wanted Waddell to develop the Windsor engine to make it as good as the Cleveland which was ridiculous. Waddell wanted to stick with the Chevrolet because of the success they’d had with it. People were talking about the chopped rear window of the GM cars but Waddell knew it was the air going up under the car that mattered. Smokey Yunick once said everybody talks about how much Waddell knows about engines and he does but it’s amazing how much that man knows about aerodynamics. Junior Johnson went to Ford in 1989 he said “after all I done for them people (Chevrolet) and they do me like that giving all their attention to Rick Hendrick because he had a lot of money. Junior was the one responsible for getting Chevrolet back in racing in the early seventies. Now I’m a Chevrolet guy all the way and no I didn’t like Dale Earnhardt at all but I’m just talking about what I’ve read.
At the 1hr and 13min Mark a man slinks under Niel Bonnets car to try and fix a gear linkage. No jack stand, and did it while the Jackman was still pumping. Insane.
Thinking about what Dale Jr. said about bringing back the clash to Daytona. Nobody will ever probably win the triple again cause the clash is not on the same week as the twin races and the 500. I wish nascar pay attention to their history cause they seem to forget it.
I think one of these days they will bring it back. Just like the brought Darlington back. There just has to be a purpose for doing so. Don't give up hope, once NASCAR gets hit in the wallet, where it hurts they will move it back to Daytona after they have ended these silly experiments.
Bodine was always my guy. He was a great driver who had a hard time winning. I’m pretty sure he won this race though - can’t wait to see (refuse to fast forward or check Wikipedia). Nobody went harder than Dale though!!
Ford never dominated in the 80s. The best they ever did in the 1980's was EQUAL the Chevrolet's in wins in 1985. Chevrolet won the manufacturers championship, the Winston Cup championship and the lions share of the races for the entire decade.
At 57:03 the Petty crash.. slow down the incar replay and look at how much movement there was inside…. It didn’t look that bad on the track but inside the car it put Petty in the passenger seat.
The sloped back window wasn't available on the 86 Monte Carlo. GM went crying to Bill France because the GM teams were getting their ass kicked so NAACAR allowed them to run the sloped rear window.
The 1986 Aerocoupe was absolutely available to buy to the public. They are rare, but they made 200 of them. And yes, that sloped glass monte kicked the tbirds ass and STILL making ford fans cry 40 years later.
@@shawdowsanddust5301I never get how Ford guys like to talk about how great the Elliotts were, but they could overcome those "bandaid rear window GM cars". I guess Dan and Ernie weren't as good as the ford guys said they were
First year of that areo coupe which was nuthing more than a aerodynamic bandaid to cover up a piss pour design by gm an make them competive.that car should never been allowed in a cup race
Funny, all Ford could muster against that "piss poor" design was equaling Chevys win total in 1985. Chevy did their homework and developed the Aerocoupe and smoked Ford's ass. Oh well, get faster or cry about it. (Ford cries about it)
Caribbean queen as the back ground music for the starting lineup is a great vibe for the race.

6 time Winston cup champion still pretty good career
@@toddbob55 dry your tears, little buddy!
nothing better than watching the worlds greatest driver blow up and come up short on another Daytona 500.

Lap 2 going into lap 3 was the end of Bill Elliott's and Ford's dominance of Grand National racing in the '80's...
LMMFAO.... no it wasn't.
😂he won his 2nd Daytona 500 a year later
Your full of shit

Not a good Daytona 500 for the Pettys; Kyle or Richard, either one.

This was NASCAR ! ... not sure what they call it today...maybe...Techcar ? ... Prettycar ?..
Hendrick Motorsports Wins At Daytona 500 1986
Why did they have to change Daytona? Why couldn’t they just leave it like this They don’t even pack the stands no more at Daytona
Anything Nascar does decently they are hell bent on destroying it.
