CTS Turbo cold air intake install - Volkswagen Passat 1.8 TSI - LOUD NOISES Manifold error codes

- Installed the CTS turbo intake with my son and let them rev the engine. It’s insanely loud and I love it. 2016 VW Passat S 1.8T
**NOTE**There is a small rubber hose that comes off the intake manifold and connects to the underside of the new intake, via a little metal nipple. It has a RUBBER CAP on it from the factory. I missed that, and put the manifold hose on OVER the rubber cap, and caused a manifold pressure error.

On god, this video saved my life
I was just about to give up and turn in the intake until I saw the very end, that little rubber cap
My engine was idling rough and I figured it was an air leak but couldn’t find it for the life of me
Got a 2015 1.8t Passat, in 5spd
Glad to see others mod out their Passats too, thanks for the video!
Also, it’s great to see your son working with you. That builds memories, I did the same with my father, best of luck to you guys
Stupid rubber cap! Hah! Glad you got it sorted.
What exhaust you have on it! That sounds dope! I need that too for my tdi
This vid was before I did my down pipe but - in this video it was just an intake and a rear muffler delete.
I have a 16 Golf TSI I bought last year with this air intake on it and I absolutely love the way it makes the car sound 😂 I've been learning how to work on it since I bought it and recently had to replace the air filter! Hope you still love the way it makes your car sound!
Awesome! Yep I do. The car is a lot more fun with the modifications
I started helping my Dad at like 10 lol. Rotate tires and then oil change . Then we swapped rear end of a buick.Brakes changes. He rebuilt 65 mustang for my sisters 1st car. I learnd many rhings Now I am a VW owner 2017 Rline passat I had MK1 Jetta coupe with Lowering spings ,Exhaust and Tear Drop rins. Point is great to see this video teach the young man ! Plus I want to get the Intake to add I have racechip. Thx for install help. Thx for tips. The Dogs are great too. Car sounded great. My dads fav line was get outta my light!
I had this intake on my ‘16 passat, with a stage 1 APR tune. The whining you’re hearing is because the resonator is absent now and the DV is whistling like a flute while all of the fast moving air flows across it. Nothing to worry about, after the tune it got louder from more boost and made the noise sooner in the powerband. I thought it was cool like a train lol
Now how would someone get rid of that if they wanted a air intake but didn’t want the train horn sound🤣
Keep doing what you’re doing man. You’re doing great. Fuck a midlife crisis LOL. You can never get old if you have the heart of a child 😊
Thanks man I’m still like 21 on the inside my wife likes to remind me lol
so you just put a breather on the mass airflow sensor ?
How much does this cost I might do it to my gf car without her knowing😝😝😝😝
🤣🤣🤣 it was about 400 bucks
Hi :) would I be to get the dimension of the exhaust I have a welder
I think the stock exhaust is 55mm - it’s slightly smaller than 2.25 inches
I stressed for a week regarding the CEL I got after install and even reset it just for it to come back. That little rubber piece caused me so much stress, thank you! Did your CEL automatically go away or did you have to reset?
I think I went ahead and reset it myself I can’t remember honestly. It should reset in its own within a few minutes though
Where did you buy the cold air intake. Been trying to modify my moms car because its going to be handed down to me. 😅👍 EDIT: Also, did you buy your exhaust system or did you fully build it?
I bought mine from Moddedeuros.com but I also use ecs tuning for parts. All I did was cut off the rear muffler and rig a pipe and a tip that I like. Enjoy!
1.8T jetta owner, Im glad to hear the car whine under high throttle like mine does, I was worried something was up with mine.
Saw your post on VWVortex and had a ton of great info that i've been looking for. Thanks!
Also I noticed your Power Module in the engine bay, and that you mentioned running the "high" mode. Where are you located and what octane fuel did you use while in the higher mode?
Yeah that whistle/horn noise is a very common complaint on these cars. Forged dv or dv relocate may or may not fix it. Had a Neuspeed module on during this video but I now have a JB4 module with custom map and it’s way better. I’m in Texas and always use 93. Occasionally I’ll turn the jb4 off and run on low octane for a tank…..it sucks lol
Did you have to clear the check engine light? Or did it go off on its own?
I am too impatient to wait for it to clear, so I cleared it lol
Ordered this CT’s intake for my 2019 Passat I can’t wait to install mine
How did it go im thinking of getting one for my 2020 passat
@@paulyevtushenko6694 easy it will fit just make sure you keep the stock sensor tube from the stock intake
@@modelaircraft6576 ok thanks, I’m just not sure, because I have the facelift so I don’t know if anything changed in the engine bay but I’m pretty sure it’s good

Did you also have a diverter valve installed or just the intake, because the turbo was pretty loud
Nope just intake

Hey man WHAT'S UP, I was wondering what kind of exhaust you have on that thing. I have a 2019 VW PASSAT 2.0 Turbo and been thinking what exaust should I put on it. Any way I can add you on social media to take a look at what it looks like ? so far I say my car looks sick but other opinions would be nice THANKS BRO 🙌🏽
Just saw this man sorry. I have really only been posting on RUclips. My exhaust on only a rear muffler delete with pipes from autozone. I have a CTS turbo down pipe coming soon tho, that will make a nice difference in sound and power
Any luck with fixing or figuring out whistling noise after install?
If you Google k03 turbo horn noise, turbo noise etc…there’s several threads out there. It’s something with the turbo itself that the factory air box muffles, so any CAI gets installed in a VW/Audi with the small k03 turbo and you get the noise. Most people say nothing can be done, a few people said aftermarket Diverter valves work. It’s in a hard spot and I probably won’t bother
Have you thought of doing a headlight amber delete by actually removing the Amber from under the headlight so that it is clear?
I did not know this was a thing, but now I am curious!
@@DADMOBILE_Garage yea apparently you can heat the headlight in a microwave and remove the lense! So it looks so clean like a full on clear headlight!
So I’m glad somebody else has actually thought about this. The side marker within the headlight has to legally be there in certain states, But if you had the knowledge and power to take aparte and put back together head/tail lights then by all means you could spray paint it white or chrome or maybe even wash the yellow paint away to make it clear, but for the most part the best thing you could do is replace the bulb inside to an Led one and maybe even go ahead and switch the amber turn signals to Led as well like I did
Do you have a link to this intake?
This one, plus the secondary intake filter www.moddedeuros.com/products/cts-turbo-air-intake-system-mk5-mk6-tsi-motor-cts-it-200

How has your Tsi engine been running with the cold air intake installed? Make an update vid on It . I have no clue how Efficient Tsi engines are especially with an air intake added
Car is running great with the intake. I love all the noises. I have not detected a difference in idle or MPG. Seems to give a little more HP in the higher RPM than before. I have live monitored with OBDeleven multiple times for commute and some pulls. Will have to learn more about timing and knock before I understand fully but, So far no indication of any issues and seems to run smooth.
And I will def make a video at some point but I have a bunch of paint match chrome delete I’m working on this weekend/next week as well as the engine cover.
I have a 2014 Jetta 1.8T and I’ve had this exact intake for about 9 months, it’s been amazing. I love the sounds and the feel. Better throttle response, you can actually notice it. And spools up quicker, noticeable too. I’d say it’s worth the money all day for the 1.8T and the 2.0T!!
Thanks for the helpful video. I just installed the same intake today and am getting that noise as well. Did you happen to find the issue?
My understanding is it’s not a problem, it’s just how the turbo sounds. On VW vortex forum I had a guy say don’t chase this dragon. He had tried every Diverter/blowoff valve and ultimately it’s just a noise this turbo makes that we couldn’t hear before with the stock air box was removed- there a lot of plastic and baffles that remove noise in the stock system.
I have gotten used to it and even kinda like the extra sound at wide open throttle. Tho, I’m not WOT that often so it’s not a big deal. Just reminds me the turbo is going hard .
Ah that makes sense! I’m new to the turbo scene and am not much of a car guy anyways so I would have been chasing that for a while. Lol
@@thesleepypassat1218 I’m both new to the turbo scene band new to being a car guy so I get it man. This is kind of the beginning of my midlife crisis and wanting to do things I never did when I was younger 😄
Amen, bro! Haha thanks again for the info!
I had chased that Sound too on my Skoda Octavia 1.8tsi. Actually i burned a exhaust valve and did a full overhaul of the engine with new piston rings and everything…
I was a little disapointed when the Sound was still there 😅🤷♂️
Just put mine in on a 2014 Jetta 1.8. Had a check engine light. Saw ur video and went back to the car and sure enough that plastic cap was inside the hose Appreciate your video saved me a huge headache
Excellent. Love to hear I helped. ✌️
I’m having trouble setting up the box where does it go exactly
Ah man……it goes pretty much right where the old one came out. It’s been a while now I’m not sure how to describe it.
@@DADMOBILE_Garage ooh okay I seee , yea it’s giving a pain in the a**
@@thebigbosss1000 it’s annoying there are no directions. I remember it taking me a bit to figure it out and having to adjust multiple times but it was months back and couldn’t explain it well. Sorry bro
@@DADMOBILE_Garage yes I know no manual kinda sucks but I finally got it all set up and let me tell ya the turbo noise is loud as heck … but now you think I’ll be better if I stage 1 tune
@@thebigbosss1000 I love the sounds! Personally I vote for jb4 on our cars, but I like installing things myself and like that I can remove it and sell it if I want. The jb4 was by far the single most impactful mod to my car.
I did the exact same thing.
Hey what’s up Dustin was wondering what you’d recommend to help manage the whistle? The CTS blow off valve or the CTS diverter valve?
I think I might have answered in another comment but….. I would not change to blow off valve. My understanding is the dv is better/more efficient. Most people (specifically Passat) report changing to a forged DV still doesn’t stop the whine. Some people report doing a DV relocation kit does stop the noise. It’s in such a dumb spot I personally don’t care to deal with it
But again take it with a grain of salt. I haven’t tried. Just info I picked up across several forums/posts/videos
I got a check engine lightr after installing this, I was just assuming it needed tuned
No there is absolutely no need to tune to run this intake. If the code is related to the intake something may not be installed right. Do you have a code reader?
I wanted to buy one for my pc, but I have doubts about whether the kit will come complete, where did you order yours? Thank you
I ordered mine from ECS tuning. It had everything I needed, and came with parts for two different engine variations - maf sensor in middle of intake, and how mine is configured with no sensor in the intake.
@@DADMOBILE_Garage thanks I found one tmb it looks good it's k&n, tmb I'll check the page you say
What are those wheels??
Advanti svelto 18x8 et45 - no longer available. The design is really similar to many I’ve seen tho.
Also I have painted them black since this video. Same wheels still.
You should get a performance muffler it makes the fatty sound go away, gives it a much better tone.
Probably gonna pick up the magnaflow cat back soon. I’d prefer the car be quieter over all. The cold start is annoying to me half the time
@@DADMOBILE_Garage if that’s what u want them u should do it, but I have a res delete with a magna flow performance muffler and it sounds 🤌🏼🤌🏼 90% of the time, not super loud but it’ll definitely sound good haha, a shop did it for me and it only costed me like 300-320 and ur down pipe that u have should make it sound even better bc it makes thag turbo spool sound super loud!
What exhaust setup do you have?
Rear muffler delete is all.
@@DADMOBILE_Garage what inch tip?
@@ybn_trixz13-_-75 it’s 3.75 now. I am going to change it again tho, can’t seem to make up my mind. Since I blacked everything out I’m thinking about a black tip.
I was half way into the video before I realized the "doodads, and this thing" weren't leading up to swapping the turbo 😅 I was thinking "this is going to go swell" 🤣😅
😂
Why the rubber and the very end has oil , ? That oil run to the turbo ?
A small amount of oil in the return tube to the turbo is normal from the PCV system. I am actually not sure how much or little exactly is normal. My car is running good and not burning oil tho . It’s possible my pcv valve is starting to wear out
@@DADMOBILE_Garage thanks
i mean, it looks cool, but you're replacing some plastic parts with some other plastic parts that are layed out exactly the same way. with the K&N, I'm guessing he did all that for about 2hp.
i got a 2016 passat and i want to put the same the intake you feel yor car i little more faster ....
If you want a little faster just go straight to a piggy back tune like JB4 or Neuspeed power module. If you shop around and can get either for about as much as a good intake. You will get at least 25hp from either. The intake only sounds cool. I didn’t notice any more power.
@@DADMOBILE_Garage ok thanks... but with the intake you can hear the turbo better
@@jacobozanches5431 yes i really like how it sounds
I have a question when you put your intake did you disconnect any air sensor or something
@@jacobozanches5431 no on my year car there is no mass air flow sensor in the intake pipe. Some years have different setup with a MAF in the middle of the tube
People People! Air Intake needs to be getting fresh clean air from outside the car. Not under the hood where is nasty, dirty, hot, and no air circulation. Common Sense people, common sense!!!!
I have a CEL for P2004, I checked and the nipple cover isn’t there but I don’t remember removing it. Any chance it could’ve gotten sucked into that tube?😅🤔
Eek maybe. I would think you’d see a bulge or feel a stiff spot if that happened. It’s possible the cap wasn’t there or fell off.
@@DADMOBILE_Garage Yeah I felt for a bulge and came up empty. I know it’s been a while so I get if you don’t remember the specifics, but was it capped the same way the EGR part was down by the turbo? Just a little external cap? Or was it an internal plug? All of the forums/groups/articles I’ve read point to the same tube being the issue.
I accidentally deleted one of your replies but I saw that the nipple was clogged/not drilled out. Dang! Quality control issue
6:25 who tha kid screaming is he okay??? lolllll
🤣🤣🤣🤣 my kids are crazy
Did you actually get a better performance besides cool sound?
Not really. Just noises. Possible there’s 5hp in there or slightly better throttle response but I recently took it out because I’ve been tired of the horn scream at wide open throttle
@@DADMOBILE_Garage thanks!
I just did mine on my 2018 Passat r line. Where is your MAF sensor?
Hey dad mobile does this come with tools or no
No tools. No instructions either.
@@DADMOBILE_Garage damn lol, I think they have them on urotuning website though I’ll have to check, thanks for letting me know though lol
@@DADMOBILE_Garage got it installed last night and I absolutely love this thing, but since I’ve never done anything like this to my car I have car paranoia and think I hear something wrong even though it’s most likely nothing lol
@@Panegrain yeah bro I know that feel hahaha. I’m 3ish years into diy car mods and I still question every single little noise.
I still check my intake and jb4 ands exhaust pipe once a week just in case and I need to check my Downpipe again just because I paranoid
Would this cause check engine light?
No this intake doesn’t cause me any codes or check engine light
What exhaust do you run?
Just a rear muffler delete and home-rigged pipe. Since I have the 09g trip trans I’m pretty limited for power so I may not bother with Downpipe and bigger exhaust.
Whats the little air cooler you installed?
If you mean the smaller red filter- that’s the secondary air injection for less emissions- heats the cat faster during cold start . Not all these cars have them. I wish mine didn’t. It’s noisy during the cold stsrt
Does this car have power steering fluid didn't see it
Hey, I was working on installing this intake on my 2016 gli. How did you remove the pvc hose connected to the intake near the compressor inlet just after the bend? Is it just pull out or are there actual tabs to pinch to release it? Thank you!
The turbo inlet? On mine it’s a pinch clamp and I used vise grips to squeeze it
Oh that’s not what you mean.
@@DADMOBILE_Garage yeah its the pcv hose. It was the little hose that connected to the left side towards the bottom side of the metal portion of the new intake
For anyone who purchases an intake for these engines and the E888.3, thr pcv hose was removed by essentially spacing it out using picks and a flat head
I think I just wiggled and pulled until it came out
I Have a general question for this thread. There’s only about 3-5 videos of install of this product in similar models. One thing I noticed is there’s no videos or tutorials how to transfer the mass air flow sensor from off of 2020 VW Passat SE 2.0T. Where does the MAF transfer to into the new intake kit or do you reuse that piece somehow?
Any help would be great
The intake came with pieces for two different engine/install options. Mine has no maf in the Intake and so uses the longer straight 3” hose section in the middle of the intake. It also comes with two smaller sections of hose in case you have the maf in your intake. You clamp your maf and the ring it’s attached to, into the two hoses provided in the kit
They little black rubber piece where does that go?!
Do you mean the little thing that comes off the new intake . Is it like a little rubber cap the size of a pencil eraser? If so it was a cover over the metal nipple on the intake for the small manifold vaccum hose
@@DADMOBILE_Garage I was talking about the black rubber grommet thing it goes over one of the mounts for the other air box and makes the new one fit I just installed mine today!
What exhaust do you have that sounds really nice have a 2017 Volkswagen Passat tsi 1.8
Thanks! In this video it’s just a rear muffler delete. I have since done a 3” downpipe and it got a little louder with more turbo noises
Can i get a link for those please?
What exhaust are you running on this
In this video it was just a rear muffler delete. In later videos I added a 3” downpipe, then later videos I added a flow master muffler back on the car. I recently traded the car in tho.

Did you figure out what that oil was when you took off the small rubber hose on the back of the engine ?
Yep It’s the PCV return into the turbo inlet. It’s apparently normal for some oil to be there. Car is still running great.
Approximately how long does this install take from beginning to end?
Took me maybe an hour since it was the first time. I usually take my time since I’m not experienced. Can be done a lot faster.
@@DADMOBILE_Garage Bro I want to say thank you so much for all your installation videos! This one in particular today helped me get mine on my car. I can’t thank you and your son enough for your guys help.
Also, that gazoo noise does sound kinda bad in my opinion but you said it can be muffled with a blow off valve? And would you happen to know what those 2 extra clamps and couplings are for?
@@dubeast209 awesome man. Very welcome. The intake fits two different configurations of our engine. The extra stuff is for cars that have the sensor in the middle of the intake tube.
Yep the kazoo noise was annoying at first but I have got used to it. Some people say if you either upgrade the Diverter valve with CTS or GFB that it helps. Others have said they’ve tried everything and nothing changes is. The part is in a really annoying spot so I likely won’t bother.
@@DADMOBILE_Garage would you happen to know what exactly causes that kazoo noise?
@@dubeast209 I spent hours and hours reading about this before and here is a good copy paste that sums up most everything I’ve found- "The problem is the design on the small K03 turbo and running more boost and air flow. There is a small tube/pipe coming off the turbo (only on the K03, the K04 is different) and you increase air flow and boost the harmonics change and you get whistle like you are blowing on a top of a glass beer bottle. You cant really get away from it unless you change turbo's, its just the way its designed, all intakes that i know of do it with that turbo.”
Is the SAI absolutely needed after intake installation ? Is there any negative affect w just letting the hose dangle with no clip in?
In theory on cold start it would be sucking unfiltered air thru the SAI……I’m no expert. Probably some minor risk with no filter, but dangling w/filter probably fine. if you don’t want see it you can put the filter on it but tuck it under air channel.
Did you need a tune for the CAI?
Nope!
@@DADMOBILE_Garage ayeee I’m going order this for my girlfriends car, she has a 2020 Passat 1.8T and probably the exhaust you have also, any other suggestions for mods?
Depends on what matters to you, but if I was starting over I’d only do a tune, wheels/tires, and coilovers. Intake and exhaust do almost nothing but make noise. Downpipe gives a bit of horsepower but not as much as the tune.
@@DADMOBILE_Garage thanks brother, like I said it’s my gf car but she know I used to be into the car scene and she likes that stuff to just trying make hers nice and I’ll do what you said not being over dramatic with it appreciate it brotha
Did you figure out the check engine light
Ah yes the intake came with a little rubber cap over the nipple for the small vacuum hose, I didn’t see and installed my hose Over that. Once I figured that out and removed the rubber cap it’s all good.
How much cost you that.and did you notice any performance?
It’s was about 300 US dollars. As for performance it’s hard to say for sure but I think the turbo spools a little faster i I got a little more horsepower in upper rpm range. Mostly it just sounds cool. Tuning chip is the best bang for buck HP gain.
@@DADMOBILE_Garage what other high performance upgrades are you done to your car ?
@@p.g.130 honestly the burger Tuning JB4 is BY FAR the most significant mod. We are talking 40 horsepower or more for one easy mod on a turbo car. That’s big for one mod especially in a low horsepower car like this. The intake might be 10hp. If I added a downpipe I might get another 10-15. Maybe 5hp more from a cat back exhaust. I might have gained a couple HP from rear muffler delete. The tune is the most important part. If you want speed don’t Fck around and go straight for either JB4 or APR. Biggest gain you will get. The rest is small gains + aesthetics.
Is your check engine still on or did you find the reason for it ?
Nope it’s gone. I forgot to remove the little rubber cap on the nipple where the vacuum hose attaches on the underside of the intake. Once I removed it it’s been fine.

@@DADMOBILE_Garage can you pass emissions with that build?
@@bellameltzer4950 yep a muffler makes zero difference emissions just noise
Scale of 1-10 how hard was the install?
I’d say a 3 or 4. Pretty easy.
What exhaust are you running?
I cut off the rear muffler with a chain tool and usesd autozone pipes/clamps and and eBay exhaust tip lol. It’s rigged. Working for now though. Eventually I’ll do something better.
@@DADMOBILE_Garage you have a dp yet? Major difference for these tsi vws
@@Lvl2farmer not yet but I’d love to. Probably do it together with APR tune and get rid of the Neuspeed module at some point
@@DADMOBILE_Garage Oh nice, I just recently installed my cts intake and i already have a catless dp on my 1.8 b7 Passat. But I haven’t heard of Neuspeed in my car. And why would you wanna rid it?
@@Lvl2farmer I have a Neuspeed power module “tune” in my car. It’s a piggy back tune. A device plugged into sensors that make the turbo produce more boost. It’s nice but not perfect so I Want to remove and get an APR ECU tune, or I might just go with Jb4
Did you have extra hose sections left over after install?
Yep two smaller sections because of my application. I don’t have a maf in the middle of my intake so I use the one long tube instead of the two short
You gonna do a catless downpipe too?
I installed the cts turbo dp with high flow cat.
