I'm almost at 1000 subscribers, thank you all so much! It may not be much but it means a lot to me. A few things about this video: I misspoke, the focus throw is 120 degrees not 270. Also please use headphones, audio quality should have a big improvement.
It's fun to see someone new pop on the scene. Nice work! I'm currently sporting the discount version of this with the 28mm FE x 55 Zeiss and I've pretty much settled on the 28x50 being the forever combo, with occasional 14 or 70-200 zooms for specialty shots. I'll be watching your work just to compare and see what you get with the combo! Nice work.
cant wait to see more footage with this lens. looks awesome!!! I defs think you can do a feature with xh2s/otus. expensive lens though!! might just have to save up xD great vid
Top notch video brother. Felt like in all the videos, the visuals and music were higher quality than the narration, now everything feels very balanced, it feels very professional. Loved it man. People say its gx aceish, but idk, you cover different aspects of the technology, and criticise it in your own way. His approach is more "futuristic" and yours is as you phrase it "modern". Some previous videos did feel a bit like you were definitely emulating him, but this one felt very organic, authentic and true to you and the evolution of this incredible channel. Happy 1000 sucribers g, appreciate the high quality content (which has gotten even higher) and I'm keen to see more of the heat the clever chilli brings out.
Hopefully each video gets better than the last, I even surprise myself how much I get by with cheap production. The thing is I wasn’t even try to emulate gxace aside from his format, which I’m beginning to think is not very good for retention according to stats. I believe it was John Mayer who said, your work is a reflection of other work you like, and the conscious differences are what you call personality. Ultimately so be it if I get the same comment every video, I don’t consider a comparison to him a bad thing, though I think our focus and tastes are different. I hope I can keep making spicy content! Barely scratching the surface…
I’d say it’s the weight and marketing. The lens is really cumbersome for photography and Zeiss markets this as a stills lens, which I don’t agree with. The lens image better suits video as it has an artistic look and less micro contrast. From the price and fact that reviews aren’t able to articulate the unique look of this lens, most people won’t know what they are buying. But my next review should change that
New subscriber here today, amazing content. How would you compare the Otus with Tokina Vista Primes? I have an 85 Otus Zf2 and deciding if I should go with finishing the Otus line up or invest in the Tokinas thanks! Edit: I am looking for a more filmic look. Not necessarily sharper or clinical but more so with character excluding all the caveats
@@lizlana4200 Zeiss Otus is very sharp, it doesn’t have character but it has personality in the sense that it’s not clinical but looks super modern. I would say if you want more aberrations and optical imperfections you can look at the DZO Arles, I made a video recently about that one, which will be similar and softer like the tokina vista primes which could balance with digital sensors to get a more filmic look. Character preference is subjective, i personally don’t think tokina vistas have a ton of character compared to some other lenses. I think Cooke would be more interesting alternative to the lenses you mentioned
Amazing video bro, really been thinking about grabbing an Otus 28mm. Any insight you could provide for using the Otus with a BMCC6kFF? It would need to be the Nikon version (for aperture) and then converted further adapted to L right? + focus ring mod for a cinema rig Keep inspiring bro. Here for the long haul!
i have a lot of videos with the otus and blackmagic ruclips.net/video/sUBsDOPLxDk/видео.html Nikon does have an aperture ring but the focus ring is reversed. I have the EF mount which has a larger flange making it more adaptable and allowing more special adapters with NDs and whatnot. However Nikon version could potentially be more convenient if Red incorporates Nikon mount for their future cinema cameras. As for focus ring mod you can check out my blog post here www.cleverghost.net/blog/zeisslensgear
@ thank you bro, the insight is extremely valuable. So whilst using the EF mount version you haven’t found the lack of aperture ring to be a hindrance?
@ The only reason it may be a hindrance is if you want to do a smooth iris pull, say you go outside to indoors and want to change aperture while recording. With electronic aperture it would have to adjust in stops. It also might be frustrating if you want to be hyper specific about your aperture like f1.9 or something, but in general i find electronic communication to actually be more convenient to quickly set aperture across cameras, pressing a button is technically easier than using an iris gear or adjusting by hand. Sometimes i question if my camera is actually precise when electronically setting aperture. If the reversed focus ring on nikon isn't a dealbreaker you may consider it because there are duclos mods to change the mount to EF, focus direction stays. I think EF is currently more universal and supported until Red/Nikon makes a move. Also you may do your own research but DXO claims that the Nikon verson captures less light than the EF version.
@@clever_ghost I understand! I don’t think I’d be in a scenario where I’d need a manual iris pull. I think the concept is just unfamiliar to me since I’ve only ever used manual aperture lenses on my BM6kFF so I’ve never actually adjusted the aperture digitally but this is reassuring to hear! I think I’d definitely take the pop and image quality of the Otus than to let the lack of manual aperture. Not to mention I may have an oppprtunity to get a used EF Otus for about $1500. So this might be an opportunity to jump on!
They’re the only lenses I use, I can’t imagine ever buying another prime lens. Theyre marketed as photography lenses but actually have rendering better for cinematography. CVP sells focus gear rings should you want to get them ready for rigs. eBay can definitely get for 1.5k or 2k USD. Even 2.5k is worth it to me, spend wisely! 💸
If you are open to nikon f mount glass you can get very simmilar results with the nikon 28 1.4, but you need an active mount to controll the aperature from the camera
The Nikon should have a physical aperture ring so you can also control it manually. I prefer EF for more versatile adaptability. I believe I made the right choice as most of the rear ND adapters like Kippertie will make them for PL and EF lenses
@@clever_ghost no this is a E lens, so you can only control aperature electronicaly. There are some adapters that allow you to do that but most easy way is to have active mount and adapter to f mount and control from camera (since no aperature lever, let alone ring)
amazing amazing videos and channel, big big fan. keep it up, a true inspiration. [excuse this pedantic correction please, I noticed you've been tagging it as 2:39, instead of 2.39 😁...]
Awesome video. I’m looking at the XH2s / metabones / Otus 28mm combo for myself. Have you tried using the 1.4x video rescaling crop on the XH2s as opposed to switching to the Fringer each time? If so, would be curious to hear your thoughts.
I haven’t, that mode crops into the sensor right? So you’d lose resolution. That’s why I prefer macro on apsc, you get more reach while maintaining the 4-6k resolution. I think you can still make macro work with the metabones though, the xh2s is plenty sharp. Putting glass in front of lens always has slight disadvantages
Honestly, if money doesn't matter, I'll buy into Leica. Weight and size matters. And modern clinical optics are their own aesthetic; no more or less, no better or worse, than vintage glass - it took me a very long time to understand that.
Agree, for my first two years I used a tiny 23mm f2 lens, most enjoyable experience. The elmarit R lenses are also beautiful lenses though I subjectively think they’re better suited for photography.
I have some old basic color grading ones but theyre for super beginners and my workflow has changed quite a bit. I’m not sure ill post an intermediate guide because those videos don’t really get a lot of engagement, now I mostly do it for clients 😕
