  • Archery changes in dominions 6.
Piercing damage is 5% LESS effective
Bow archers get +1/2 strength instead of +1/3 strength to damage
Crossbowmen get a total of 65% armor reduction, bringing a sweet 24 protection down to a measly 8.4 effective protection
MOST IMPORTANTLY: Protection is hugely nerfed, which seems to open a window for archery to remain strong. Let's test this out.

Archers actually have a better/more important place in Dominions 6 it seems! Let me know how archery is going for you guys in your games, or if people still aren't adjusting to the new info!

The comments about archers "winning in melee" seems to miss that a lot of the archers are still shooting and are now at perfect accuracy range.
This is especially true if with crossbows that are tough enough to survive for a few rounds, and don't have melee weapons that can punch through.
Another bit is that archers scale up in efficiency better. 600 archers will all be hitting, while 600 infantry will not all be hitting. And against 600 infantry the archers that deviate off target will still hit something compared to hitting 100.

      EXTREMELY good insight! Very true!
Archers, in mass especially, are dangerous because they are able to leverage their entire force at once! I can't really even add anything to what you said, other than the fact that you're completely correct!
Thank you so much for the comment and feedback!

It looks like in all of these situations, they are winning more in melee than they are with their arrows. It looks like the melee is taking very little damage on the approach, but then get swarmed and surrounded by a ton of guys with daggers or whatever and just lose due to sheer numbers.
I'm wondering how this might look against tough units without shields blocking a lot of the arrows. Or maybe against heavy cav, especially with xbows. With enough of them, would they just shoot the horses out from under the cav even if the horses are well barded?

You know what? I'll go throw together a few tests for you, and I'll put a quick little video for you up in a day or so. Thanks for the feedback!

wouldnt showing/comparing the battle results be the most important part of this test? why didnt you do it that way?

    • @AOReaper
      @AOReaper  Месяц назад +1

Well, since we were just testing the effects that archery had directly on armor, I didn't want to set up battles with a more realistic scenario (i.e. wall of soldiers in front of archers with shields vs unshielded opponents). I wanted to isolate the variables as much as possible, and then since the melee troops eventually reach the archers, the battle recap doesn't tell much of the story (since the melee fight at the end will muddy the results).
Just my thoughts on it! Thank you so much for the feedback and comment!

@@AOReaper yea the archers melee at the end does skew it, but that would happen in each archer only fight and gives a decent look into just how much difference there would be, exactly, between the 6 archer/xbow only tests. no worries tho, i just couldnt help but think this the whole time watching

When the archers win in melee I don't think you're establishing anything about the archery.
Definitely demonstrated that unbuffed archery isn't much good against armour though. It works against unprotected troops or with magic support. That's not entirely realistic but it seems fine for gameplay

Well, I think something we've definitely established here is that archery has a FAR higher role late game than it did in Dom 5. Those archers had no melee line in front of them, but now (in Dom 6) they clearly tear up even the most heavily armored Ulm troops WITH buffs on them over time.
Archery will never be AS great as, say, evocations for killing large buffed and massed troops (thunderstrike anyone?) but archers very clearly do a LOT more to buffed infantry protections (lower in Dom 6 - with higher archery base damages) than they did in Dom 5.
Late game, mages will always play a role, but the video demonstrated that even in the worst case scenario, archers still contribute quite heavily against even buffed Ulmish troops. I think perhaps it'd be more cost efficient against those particular troops WITH buffs to do air evocations, but it does show how valuable they've been shifted to.
Thanks for the commentary, its always appreciated!
