  • Today we examine the history of race in the western world and how it has effected the worlds understanding of Identity and Color. The question of why Arabs are considered white is a complex subject that I was surprised to discover wasn't as easy as I originally thought.

im REALLY surprised you didnt bring up the story of George Shishim. He is THE REASON arabs are now considered white in the US. He was a arab american police officer who arrested a prominent lawyers son and then faced a legal battle over his citizenship/racial status. They argued that being Lebanese he was a mongolian asian. Shishim argued he was white and ended up winning, changing the classification of arabs in a direct legal sense. He famously argued in court "If I am mongolian then so is jesus, as we come from the same land"

I think only white people see other races and ethnicities based on skin color, which oversimplifies people's ethnicities and heritages. My example of Thai people is about facial features. Skin color comes second. East Asians are one group because they tend to have small eyes and fair complexion. Malays and Indonesians and people in Brunei are another group. Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis are in the same group. Middle Easterners and North Africans are another group. The world certainly is not just based on skin color.

In ancient Ceylon, people were curious about outsiders. They traded with outsiders and even allowed them to settle. It has changed after Portugese took advantage of their hospitality. Even after that, the worst case for a foreigner would be to be suspected as a spy. In that case you would be detained in some fertile valley for about one year to be observed, and well fed. They are allowed to work, learn, trade and even teach their religion, and write books. There are many books written by several foreigners from different countries who were detained in open space for observation. If nothing against them were reported, they are allowed to go back with royal protection.

There’s two definitions of “white” I hear people use most frequently:
White as an arbitrary classification related purely to appearance, most notably skin colour, but also facial features and other things. This definition is arbitrary, mostly defined by peoples perceptions, and relates to what most academics call “race”.
White as a classification related more to ethnicity, which takes into account culture, history, language, etc. This definition is used much more frequently in the USA by progressives (despite their census saying otherwise) and often relates to oversimplified historical power imbalances in the country.
These are both pretty stupid and borderline useless ways of classifying people imo.

That was like 20 years ago. I have blond hair, green blue eyes and light skin, but evey time I tell someone that I am Arab not " white" the look on their face is telling how the idea of " color" is embedded in many people's minds, more than often I have to explain that Arabs are the historical continuation of so many different groups that historically lived in vast parts of the ancient world, basically The ME and NA, and as such will reflect this continuity in culture, physical appearance etc, I try to explain to them that the idea of race among Arabs was rejected by most, in fact when some Arab authors tried to define Arabs as a race, like the medieval Al Jahiz, they were challenged and basically had to retract such ideas. In fact the idea of being " Arab" was supposed to be " open " and the funny part nowadays is that the proponents of " Arab purity " are sometimes " nonArabs " in terms of origin like Saudi Mansour Al Balushi, whose last name indicates he is a Baluch from today's Pakistan, yet people like him call Arabs like Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians " remnants of Romans and Greeks , very strange when actually the archaelogical records shows that the 1st mention of " Arabs " was in Southern Syria in 853 BCE by the the Assyrians fighting a coalition of Levantine kings in the battle of Qarqar

Is it your claim you don't have a race, and simply an ethnicity? I'd be fine with that, but I wouldn't want you to cut against normal identity for white Christians, which is so often the aim of people when they deny being Caucasian, which "white" is shorthand for. White Americans use white to have some group identity, which is much more cohesive than religion most of the time because white encapsulates a lot of cultural norms mainly stemming from the UK but also broadly from Western Europe.

I'm a European American Christian, also known as a white American. We exist as a separate ethnicity regardless of whether it's blurry on the edges of the definition like it is with all ethnicities and cultures. The broad point is because you don't have a shared culture and history with me, you can't be part of my group, but my group still exists because there are tens of millions that identify with it, even if you are living among us. Here in Denmark (and most of Western Europe) if we were to refer to someone by race we would use the correct word for that person’s ethnicity or nationality, and if we are not sure about either we would probably refer to them by the area they are most likely from. Without understanding of human migrations, language and genetics you're are just doing guess work, for example Amazigh, Somali, Arabic and Ancient Egyptian all fall under the same family group of languages which are the Afroasiatic languages they tend break down into their own language groups, Tamazight, Cushitic, Semetic and Egyptian (wasn't really classified into it's own group since it shared a lot with the other three mentioned).
These groups especially the Amazigh and Horn African do share a similar genetic component which was dubbed Maghreb and Ethio - Somali component, which looks to have arrived from the Levant around 10,000 - 12,000 years ago, and mixed in the local HG groups that lived in the vicinity, you can follow Haplogroup E1B1B which seems to be the most common y-dna haplogroup amongst North and Horn African, followed by Haplogroup T which looks to have originated in Zagros mountain range and is associated with the pre pottery neolithic B located in the fertile crescent, primarily found in Southern Egypt, Eriteria and North Somalia.

American census categories are weird. White isn't a purely racial category but also linked to ethnocultural aspects. The biological race is called caucasoid or europoid and you can guess where the latter term is more common. We actually had two lessons about race at school in year 6 and later also a bit in year ten at my German school. It was very factual and about which races exist, where they migrated and where different races mixed and what the term for those mixed race populations are. We were shown pictures and there was a map in the general school atlas book we all had for geography. Political correctness idiocy changed that later. Anyways, the caucasoid race reaches from Europe to India. The vast majority of Indians are caucasoid, just of a darker skin as skin tone is actually something that can change relatively quick from an evolutionary perspective. Siberia/Central Asia has been an area where this race mixed with the mongoloid one (Native Americans also seem to have a small but significant percentage of caucasoid ancestry but mainly mongoloid) while the Horn of Africa is a mix with congoid/negroid race. There is also the australoid one mainly in Melanesia but with population elsewhere and traces of ancestry in Southeast Asia. Last but not least there is the tiny capoid one comprising the Khoisan in Southern Africa.
It's just that. It has nothing to do with any normative claims. No need for racial conflict. We are races of the same species.

Humans were nomads since the beginning of time, some will settle and start civilizations. East Africans are partially west Eurasian and partially indigenous East African which is the closest ancient African population to all none Africans since all Eurasian people crossed from east Africa to Eurasia. With that being said I don’t think Arabs should be considered white because this makes Arabs a minority without protections.
