In my opinion, Daniel Barenboim is the absolute master of the Beethoven piano sonatas, and even the master of Beethoven overall. He captures everything great about the sonatas. What's amazing is that he learnt and mastered every Beethoven piano sonata by the time he was 17, now that's a feat

How could someone be the ‘master’ of Beethoven sonatas when he can’t get the exact interpretation? Everyone is different, therefore there cannot be a ‘master’ of Beethoven sonatas.

I DID IT! I DID IT!
Had to play this piece for my graduation and im so gald that i managed to satisfy my own expectations, because i played this at a competition before and my mind just went blank at the last part and i never finished the piece😭
I was truly so disappointed in my self and now that i managed to play it AND MOST IMPORTANTLY BETTER THAN I DID BEFORE, I’m so happy.
Huge thanks to my teachers, to everyone who gave me feedback, and most importantly Barenboim for leading me the way to master this piece and get better at piano once again!

His playing of the cycle in this period is more committed and communicative than his last cycle, which was still good in some, but less satisfying. in others. There is no doubting his exceptional abilities and these performances are testimony to that. That said, his early cycle for EMI remains also , a great document.Thank you for posting these precious videos.

I do play the piano, and have done so for over 50 years. I have also attended and now give lunchtime concerts and I attend concerts regularly. Music is one of the most important features in my life. I have listened to DB since I was a child and I know his genius. But the point I wish to make is to do with spontaneity and vitality that was once a feature of his playing that is often lacking today. In my opinion. I recall his cycle of Beethoven Sonatas in London a few years ago. Most of the performances were finely crafted, but lacked the spirit of music making he used to have in abundance. His playing, to me (and others I know)made the occasion much less memorable, with exceptions of course. I don't get this problem listening to performances he gave in earlier years. I hope that explains my feelings about his playing today. And yes I do play the G major Sonata, which he plays here very well.

Lots of very enthusiastic comments here for a fine pianist, but I really must question something about what Barenboim has done here with the very first two bars.
Barenboim’s first note - the C - is too heavy, and played like down-beat, but should in fact be an un-accented up-beat (if you look at the score you will see the point); it is the following F that should be the stressed note, the C being simply a lead-in.
Beethoven wrote the first 5 notes thus (in common cut time):
    C / *F* A flat *C* F /
(apart from the C which lacks it, the following four notes each have staccato wedges marked to stress the point).
    Barenboim plays:
    *C / F A flat C F /*
In other words, he plays it in a similar way he would play the identical opening - minus the lead-in note - of Haydn’s e minor sonata Hob. XVI:34.
I know it’s all about interpretation, but in short, Barenboim here has completely re-written and re-interpreted Beethoven’s opening motif.

Beethoven of all composers is open to the widest of interpretations but if you had to go with one of the piano sonatas Barenboim will do fine.
