    I can't understand the hype thrown at the likes of Rolex, AP, Richard Mille when there are pieces like this on the market.
    This is ultimate watch making artistry at it's very finest.

    • @fabrom4428
      @fabrom4428 2 года назад +10

      It's because the hype has little to do with actual watchmaking and more with projected image and investment value. Let's at least rejoice at the fact that these dynamics keep JLC pieces (relatively) more affordable for us in the know.

      Deep in their hearts, nobody actually likes modern Rolex anymore. They're boring and lifeless. Well built, yes, but lifeless nonetheless. What people like is having other people notice their Rolex, because if everyone is being honest, Rolex hasn't had a single charming watch since the Explorer 1655.

    JLC are as good as anyone when it comes to complications and different looks in their really expensive watches. As has been said, their more regular watches suffer a bit in the popular appeal, design-wise. But, they are, mostly, dress watches, they are beautifully thought out and finished (though the prices are creeping up a bit too much). Basically, you buy a JLC to please yourself, not impress random others. When it comes to rarified levels of watchmaking, JLC should be in the "holy trinity" with AP making way for them.

    • @simonrano8072
      @simonrano8072 2 года назад +1

      Amen, AP is living solely on variations of the RO that is much more a price tag on the wrist. They are well made and all but either they are conservative, lasy or trapped by their own customers but they are definitely stranded at the same place.

    My brother was a very high precision engineer and for a while he worked for a genius clockmaker that invented one-off seemingly "perpetual motion" clocks that were very accurate and ran on original power sources. One used evaporation of water. Another used a ball bearing that ran on a track.

      @@eh86055 At the time I was ignorant of the significance and did not ask my now deceased brother the name of the clockmaker. If he could afford my brother as a high end precision machinist as a full time employee he must have been charging quite a price for each clock. At the end of his career my brother would write computer programs to make the machines that made the machines to either do or check precision manufacturing, including for the semi-conductor industry. He said it was very boring and hands off. In retirement he did deliveries for a high end boat company. One day he was at their facility and they could not figure out how to straighten a 40' drive shaft that had got bent. He said I can do that, and straightened it by hand and eye. He also built parts for the first NASA moon landing at one point. Now I really wish I knew the name of that clockmaker.

    I bought an Atmos in non-operating condition about 20 years ago and had it repaired/rebuilt soon after. It has been running fine since then and keeps incredibly accurate time. Off by a couple minutes every six months when changing to/from daylight saving time. My only complaint is that it is hard to read the time from a distance because there is not enough contrast between the hands and the dial.

    • @thomashrubecky1663
      @thomashrubecky1663 2 года назад

      If only you could add a photo to your comment. I’d love to (a) see the clock in it’s current condition and (b) observe the [apparent lack of] contrast between the dial & hands. Do you have a model number you’d be willing to share with us so we could look it up?

    • @carlam6669
      @carlam6669 2 года назад

      The hands are gold plated. The center of the dial is a cutout circle with a diameter of 7cm revealing gold plated gears and plates. The hands disappear against this background. A white enamel band of 11cm outer diameter surrounds this hole with gold numbers at 3, 6, o & 12 positions and gold tick marks at other positions. I couldn’t find a model number. I recall being told when I bought it that it was manufactured in the mid 1950’s. Must be real gold plating because the whole clock still looks like new. I have a KitKat clock (with wagging tail) hanging on the wall not far from it. It is much easier to read the time on the KitKat clock with white hands against a black body/dial. The KitKat clock has a battery powered quartz movement and also keeps good time.

      Winders are completely unnecessary for the vast majority of modern mechanical watches. The parts and lubrication technology have come leaps and bounds in the past several decades. Even when a modern mechanical watch completely unwinds, it's fine. Most pieces would be completely okay just being wound once every couple of months.

The lack of direction from the brand is hurting it badly as evident from the decreasing market share for the last few years. I'm a die hard JLC fan and I long for the years when JLC released daring designs like the master Compressor and Amvox series, rather than me-too products.

    I'm wondering what it is that you guys are smoking, as it's having a serious effect on your brains...The Atmos clock describes itself...it is powered by the differences in atmospheric pressure and has a reversing mechanism fitted hopefully, which harnesses power both on the rise and fall of pressure, delivered by the anaeroid bellows at it's heart. If there is a bimetallic strip here it is used to measure temperature difference in the bellows. However the quantity of energy delivered by the atmospheric bellows is vast in comparison with that off the BM strip. I would think that fitting the strip is superfluous to the energy needs of the mechanism and is likely to have been included by the marketing division rather than than the engineers, in the ever increasing need to increase complications count, rather than be driven by the necessity of this device.

    It really seems that JLC are untouchable in terms of watchmaking at any sort of scale. There are makers that only make a handful of watches per year that can do it, but the only bigger companies that can even get close are Lange and PP. And for all of them, you'd have to add a zero to the JLC price. Incredible stuff.

    Atmos clocks are horilogical wonders. The pendulum on these things are sensitive, and I really mean sensitive. If you don't mount this thing to a block of granite, just walking through your house disturbs the pendulum (which rotates on a extremely thin wire). These clocks do not like to be jostled in the least. If you ever handle one, there is a locking mechanism at the bottom of the clock that freezes the pendulum in place. Otherwise, you risk damaging the pendulum if you handle this clock without locking it first. Not fun to learn that one the hard way!
