The Future of Herding Sheep - New Zealand Drone Mustering

For hundreds of years, farmers have used dogs to help herd (or muster) their sheep from place to place. With the increased availability of drones, we have started to use a DJI Mavic Air2 on our farm to help with mustering.

This is a great boon to farming and is oh so much cheaper too. I feel sorry for all my former work colleagues who died while mustering. (I'm a former fixed wing mustering pilot, working on cattle stations in the Aussie Outback, and I also have a very little used commercial helicopter pilot licence and fly a DJI Mavic 2 Pro recreationally).
My only advice? I used to be able to tell whether a paddock had been mustered by chopper or plane as I flew along the fence line. If they'd been mustered by chopper, they'd run, cos the chopper pilots would often jam them up too closely. But I used to stay far enough away (in the plane) from the cattle to just keep them at walking pace, so that they wouldn't be as stressed when they got to the stockyards. Less stress = good, right?! Lesson: just keep your livestock moving at walking pace, no need to make them run. Easier muster, too.

Very true. I often use the drone on one side while my dogs are working the other side.
