Bert Cooper nearly had his Buster Douglas moment. The difference, something so many people still failed to understand, is that what made Evander Holyfield so great was his ability to win not only when not at his best, but when facing adversity. That is why I always would've picked him over Tyson. In a battle of wills, Tyson could never beat Holyfield.
What a battle, Cooper had some great toughness. And Holyfield lived up to his name as The Real Deal. He’s one of my favorite boxers of all time, he always showed trendemous heart & had that never give up attitude in his fights. He was a true warrior in that ring.
Great fight. I forgot that Holyfield ripped his glove on Cooper's head. Cooper was a tough guy. I shake my head in amazement when I watched the number of punches that snapped Cooper's head back and he didn't quit or get KO'ed.
The people who lived in my childhood house before us had spliced into my rich neighbors HBO, SHOWTIME, CINEMAX & PPV feed somehow so I got everything for free until I moved out lol. Saw every boxing match for 10+ years, plus WWF, early UFC, & porno... which was awesome in the teen years.
Not one comment complimenting Lewis on his KO victory. (Sigh.) What else is new? This was Lewis at age 26, 17-0 record, in just his third year as a professional boxer, ranked #3 in the world, and he destroys Tyrell Biggs.
I believe he would have beaten Holyfield on this night and been undisputed champ much earlier in his career if he had replaced Damiani instead of Cooper.
Just typical of the biased crap Lewis had to put up with from the US media. Unfortunately many were influenced by this as is usually the case most fans know very little about boxing and see what they are being told. Lewis was head and shoulders above his generation for some time before he finally got some respect. The combination of being avoided by the likes of Bowe and others and constant slagging from know nothing journalists like Wallace Mathews(some of those articles were beyond disrespectful and so petty and stupid, bearing no relationship to reality and not worthy of a Bowe fan boy comment let alone a senior boxing journalist)this garbage convinced a large section of the fans that Lewis was indeed nothing special. Even to this day some people think Bowe was the better fighter, yes the guy Lewis took out in the Olympics in 2 rounds who then scandalously broke a promotional agreement and mandatory defence by running from Lewis, dumping the WBC title before he was about to be stripped of it again causing the undisputed title to get split up. Eddie Futch was also very clear that he didn't want Bowe anywhere near Lewis. Even after the guy who battered Bowe into retirement was taken out in a minute and a half in his next fight by Lewis the same people rated Bowe higher and most were making Holyfield a strong favourite over him The number of comments we now see of people who look back on Lewis's fights and make the same comments along the lines of "I never liked Lewis much back then but having recently seen his fights, he was a beast" tell this shameful tale of what Lewis had to overcome and how easily people are influenced.
You ought to check out his fight with Ray Mercer. When Cooper was motivated, he would walk through machine gun fire. Other times, he just didn't seem interested in taking punishment.
Lewis almost unrecognisable as the colossus he was to become. You can see the raw strength, athleticism and ambition. Every fight gave him something to move on to the next level.
He was a great ! fighter . But not a true heavyweight , as he was pumped up on weights to make the division . And still was under 215 most of his early career . Tyson weighed over 200 at 17 years old .
This was the time period where Lewis was just entering the scene as a legit TOP 10 heavyweight. Tyson had lost to Buster Douglas, and Holyfield was established as the undisputed champion. This was where the "torch" got passed from Tyson to Holyfield. Tyson's era of dominance had ended, Holyfield's was beginning, and Lewis was essentially "on deck" waiting for his turn to bat. It took a LONG time for these two guys to finally meet, but Lewis did everything he could to put himself in the #1 contender position and get there. It's too bad boxing politics had to delay it for so long.
Yeah but remember holyfield had 3 wars with bowe then 2 fights with tyson he also lost to moorer and lewis became the wbc champion in 1993 holyfield also didnt fight for 1 year
Agree ! Holyfields strength was his toughness and will . He was not a hard puncher as he hit Cooper with over a dozen clean shots , and Cooper didn't fall . Compared to Foreman who hit Cooper with a body shot , and he didn't come back out the round after to finish the fight . Holyfield was all will
@@SJ-ty5rw Holyfield could definelty hut hard, I would say p4p yiu could say he was one of the headrest punchers ever, because he managed to go all the way from LHW to HW doing serious damage at LHW and CW and still being able to hurt and stop guys at HW. Cooper tough man rugged fighter. Holyfield a true Champion. The only Fighter of his time that fought all the top Contenders and Champions of his. He is the Real Deal.
Real deal of steroids of dodgy wins. Cooper has smashing him all over the place so they gave holyfield 2 minutes to get his head together claiming "the gloves ripped" just another fake American heavyweight from the 90's an 80's,like tyson he was rubbish. Lennox lewis exposed the Americans so has tyson furyv
Imagine putting tyson fury in the same sentence as Holyfield. 2 years ago fury had zero title defenses. He has what 2 now? Never undisputed. Only fought wilder and old klitschko and old washed up britts
Cooper came in as the replacement for the replacement and was given no chance. In retrospect people shouldn't of been shocked that this was such a great fight as in reality it was between 2 fantastic cruiserweights.
You don't stand there and bang with a guy like Bert Cooper. Especially when he's coming in on short notice. Out box him, wait till he gets tired, and land the big overhand right.
The Ref done a great job..who wants to see someone brains beat out..George 💓 Forman was wrong about the storage..Burt had taken enough, and he is a tough boxer. 😳
Holyfield fights a bit too relaxed. If it has been Tyson in front of him , he would have been KO. Bert was one punch away, sorry he never gained a title.
Tyson shouldn't have pulled out of this fight. After watching the foreman fight I think Tyson's style would have been a mismatch for holyfield. He needed Rooney for the confidence and to stay in check with training. But holyfield style wasnt as primative as Tyson. Tyson would have slipped punches foreman hit holyfield with.
These full broadcasts are just the best.

It says something about Foreman's punching power making Cooper quit after 2 rounds.
Wow round 3! What a round! Holyfied had some super recovery powers.
Two warriors that will be remembered for there all action packed fighting spirit.

Tickets just 25 bucks. wow.
If Bert Cooper had liked to do roadwork he could have been the greatest Cruiserweight ever.
It also seems like he had some defensive liability's .
You want to see a great fight... Holyfield and Cooper at 195 in about 1988.
Thank you for the upload.. Great enjoyment re-watching this
Cooper took more flush blows here in one fight than most take in a hard career.what a tough, courageous guy.
