The brother was in complete shock. Like I don't think there is a right way to react to seeing your sister's head come right off. He's just a kid. He didn't even want to look in the back seat, he knew what was back there, and knowing her headless body was there as he drove, must have been a living nightmare. Enough to churn your stomach. Both Alex Wolff (Peter) and Toni Collette (Annie) gave incredible performances! I think they were both the all-stars of this film. It's difficult to effectively portray things like grief and mental illness so that it actually moves the audience and haunts them afterwards. Like Toni's shrieks or Alex's broken, glossy stare in the car that night.

To explain Peter's behavior after Charlie's accident, he would have probably been in a state of extreme shock after such a traumatic event. That's why he couldn't even bring himself to do anything but go home and say nothing. Plus, like you said he was stoned so the anxiety/panic/shock would have been even more profound and overwhelming. I speak from experience unfortunately. Because of my job, I've unfortunately had the displeasure of witnessing people in extreme shock where they couldn't even speak, sometimes for days or even weeks. It's a terrible thing to experience.

This is honestly one of my favorite movies, no matter how many times you watch it you notice new details every single time; so incredibly crafted! And a recommendation for a good comedy cleanse unless you've seen them already but Pineapple Express, Bubble Boy with Jake Gyllenhaal, or Superbad XD
SPOILER for those who have not seen this movie fully:
The body in the attic was Annie's mom; earlier in the movie, the Funeral place called to say that someone "desecrated the body," meaning they dug it up. It was then placed in their attic as a part of the ritual after they removed her from the cemetery. On the ground were the mom and grandma at the end; Charlie's head was the one on the statue that they were bowing to. The grandmother was basically the leader of their cult, to summarize. Paimon was accidentally born in Charlie's body which is why earlier in the film, Charlie said to the mom, "Grandma wished I was a boy." All the events that unfolded were orchestrated through the cult manipulating the family because to transfer Paimon, he needed to go into a weak male host. Each event was to break down Peter to make him a suitable new host for Paimon. Also, Annie stated at her grief meeting that her older brother "had schizophrenia," and "he blamed her (their mother), accusing her of putting people inside him.'' She also stated that her father starved himself to death, showing that they had been trying for generations to weaken the males in their family to help Paimon go into their bodies. But it wasn't until Annie's mom "sunk her hooks into Charlie," as she stated, that the ritual started to be successful with Annie's family. So much foreshadowing and symbolism; this movie is a gift to film nerds like me XD It's insane to know that this is the director Ari Aster's first feature film, and he came out with the also amazing Midsommar the following year. I want to intern for Ari Aster and Gus Van Sant so bad, I would do it for free XD

To be fair very few of us know how we’d react in the situation with his sisters death, especially since how your body reacts to shock can make you act very differently than you normally would. I.e. it’s pretty much out of your control when your body decides it needs to take over/deal with shock.
The actor does a really good job at showing how his character just shut down rather than comprehending something so traumatic.

It wasn’t even his fault. It was all the cult. They planned this. The girls making the cake were prob in on it, the sign on the telephone poll, the cult put the deer in the road so that Peter would swerve the car, and the body Paimon was in needed to be decapitated in order for him to leave and transfer into Peter. (He got into Annie first) Charlie was never Charlie. It was Paimon the entire time. We never see the real Charlie.

MIDSOMMAR next!! Stay with Ari Aster.
Also, I just wanted to say something in Peter's defense, specifically regarding his reaction to the accident with Charlie. Severe trauma affects people in different ways and to different degrees. It might've looked like apathy or coldness, but that was a portrayal of someone who was so completely traumatized that they just shut down. He was on autopilot, he'd dissociated. I speak from personal experience that you can perform all kinds of activities, even your day-to-day schedule, in this state, especially if no one ever prompts you to speak or asks you about what happened. PTSD is a strange beast.

he could not face what he had done to Charlie
he couldn't look back to verify what had happened
and he couldn't just stay there.
    his mind broke right there
he went home on 'automatic pilot' and then went in and went to lay down to try and sleep. Which would be an impossibility
Toni Collette, who plays the mom Annie, deserved an Oscar for that performance after discovering Charlie's headless corpse in the car... that gut-wrenching shriek of despair...shit tears me up every time.

A great reaction to what I think is one of the best horror movies in years.
Now a few bits of medieval lore to help settle your minds.
The lore in that book you read about King Paimon is 100% accurate. It is actually the translated text from medieval Demonology. & if you read the text it states he can bend & break reality as he is the King of mischief. So floating Mom's & bodies... EASY for him. Same for making his followers rich & powerful. King Paimon could turn paper, or anything really, into gold.
But there are a couple of details not mentioned in the book that were changed for the movie.
    1. King Paimon is actually 1 of 9 Kings of Hell. Not 8. It was changed to 8 for ritualistic effect. So by real lore you wouldn't face Northeast to summon him.
    2. The whole beheading thing is also merely for movie & ritualistic effect. That is no part of any ritual of his summoning. The reason that it was used is from the VERY few bits of artwork we have. & you see them in the movie. 1 picture has 3 heads hanging from Paimon's belt.
I hope that helps everyone sleep a little better.
Hope everyone is having a brilliant week & much love to all from here in the UK

This movie fucked me up! And I've loved horror movies since I was young. This is the most realistic portrait of grief I've ever seen. The demonic element is horrifying enough but to add deaths of family and real emotions. Omg. One of the best movies. Toni Collette was fkn robbed of an oscar

The cult killed Charlie. Not Peter. The cult set everything up. The cake, the symbol on the telephone poll, the deer in the road, and the body Paimon was in needed to be decapitated for him to leave it. Charlie was Paimon the entire time.

Peter never had a chance once his mom reunited with Grandma. Peter was always the goal.
From what I understand, Grandma was the leader of a cult that worshipped a demon. Grandma wanted to use her grandson as a vessel for the demon to be here on Earth. Daughter left with her infant son Peter and went no contact with Grandma for a long while. Then they later reconciled and Grandma secretly used Charlie as the vessel instead, even though the demon prefers a young male vessel. When Charlie died, the demon spirit hovered around the family/cult until it was able to inhabit the mom when mom was freaking out & overwhelmed & was vulnerable to be possessed. The possessed mom and the cult members in the house went after Peter to try and transfer the demon to him and when he jumped from the attic and was unconscious, he became possessed. So the cult wins in the end and gets the vessel the demon wanted.

The more u watch this, the better it gets! You’ll notice the naked cult people outside their home in a number of scenes night and day, look in every dark corner of the screen, listen for thumps in silence jsut before scenes start, look at the group members and you’ll see the same people thst end up naked cult members, pause the scenes showing the pages about Paimon , the demon, if you read those it explains a ton of the questions you’ll have thru the movie. The tick is what middle easterners do to make camels move when riding them and the picture of Paimon he’s said to ride a camel in hell carrying the 3 heads of females sacrificed carrying them by their hair. (3 heads 😉) there’s endless amounts of Easter eggs and it doesn’t loose intrest if you watch “everything you missed Easter eggs of hereditary” videos on RUclips and then watch again. It also IS liked to “Midsommar” tho some say it’s not, pay attention. Polar opposites of evil buyer both pagan cults.
One of my favorite horror movies and I’ve seen it a number of times cause it freaks me out. haha,

Perhaps the demon was released when Charlie’s head popped off and it somehow found its way to Peter to incubate for the night or something, and that’s why Peter didn’t react like perhaps he normally would.
The cult probably also laced his weed somehow now that I think about it. Maybe we can see a cult member with a couple of his friends or something in the background somewhere..

    • @a.j.1819
      @a.j.1819 Год назад

What do you mean „like he normally would“ ? Shock is a completely normal response to something as traumatising as that. I don’t understand how so many people are surprised when a 17 year old, stoned boy reacts to his sister being decapitated with utter shock and an inability to process what just happened. Do you have any knowledge on the human psyche ?
The demon enters Peter at the end of the movie when the grandma literally screams at him (Peter) to „get out“. That’s literally the whole point of the celebration scene at the very end. Don’t know why this even has to be explained, it’s obvious .
