At 55:32 - They gave Mark the jester hat because... towards the beginning of their stay in Harga, the kids were dancing to "Skin the Fool." A lot of people don't understand why Dani gave in. It's as Pele said- the cult is a family and they share everything: pain, happiness, death, pleasure.. everything. That's why they vocalize Dani's cries with her, and the family members burning to death. To them, they literally feel each other's emotions as though they were all one. That level of intimacy and support is odd to see, it's extreme. But when you realize that it is the opposite of being alone, you can understand why is it better.

At 58:02 - "It's weird how it wasn't explained..." Upon many watches, the audience can observe that Terri hooked herself and her parents up to the car exhaust to die of carbon monoxide poisoning in a murder/suicide of herself and her parents. She was on a supreme downswing of her bipolar situation, where she was "going to the darkness and taking their parents with her."
It's a moment you skipped over towards the beginning - it's one of the reasons that Dani was trying so hard to get in contact with her sister and parents. Terri's email terrified Dani. Dani (while in her apartment in college) tried to warn her parents that something was off about Terri's email, and she was scared. When she couldn't get in contact, she called Christian, who dismissed Dani's concern as "Terri is just acting out in a bid for attention."
The scene with Terri and her parents is dark and hard to see, but it is a recurring vision that Dani keeps having in her bad, traumatic drug trips: her sister with a hose taped to her mouth.

Crazy what different experiences people can have watching the same movie. I hated Mark so much he couldn't die soon enough. I seriously hated the main crew of guys waaaay more than the cult.
I lost my family not too long before I saw this so I was in Dani's head through the whole movie. Christian's cowardice was so much more evil than the cult.
When you are as traumatized as Dani is, every little thing he does/doesn't do is like another trauma on top of the other. I was so shell shocked by everything she was experiencing along with her that by the end I felt the same surreal feelings of intense relief at the end along with her.
Starting with when they were screaming in unison with her to surround her with sympathy&empathy. Even though everything they did was to manipulate her, I didn't care. It was so much safer with the cult than the people she came with at that point.
Also, did you notice the "horror movie formula"? The sacrifices according to the formula must be "The fool" (Mark) "the scholar" (Josh) "the harlot" (Connie. Because Pelle's brother was jealous that she started dating Simon instead of him, if you'll remember) and the alpha (Christian or Simon depending on how you look at it). The virgin (Dani) doesn't have to be sacrificed as long as she suffers.

Yup. No narcissist leader, just s culture that’s *very* different than ours. There’s actually a lot of beautiful things about it too, the main one being how much of a collective unit it is. Yeah it’s kinda weird, but they experience Dani’s pain with her. Dani has been isolated like crazy in her life, and here’s the community that accepts her as she is and is willing to go through her emotions with her.

Although, if you read swedish (i dont but some people who do have pointed this out) the books in front of pele actually have some nazi rhetoric on it and the big banner over the road on the way to the harga says to vote against immigration and to keep sweden white or something like that, so thats a BIIIG downside to the harga lol

There’s this cult documentary that analyzes cult scenes and they used some clips including the congregation crying with Dany and the women, it almost removes her autonomy and her pain, and it makes it seem like they share it with her, but it’s to deceive and to make her feel as if she’s a part of them to ease the transition. Like when ppl all sing together at a concert, when it’s over you feel like you were part of something greater. Also the way they are crying starts to sound like a chant, it can become rhythmic and even induce a trance. 👀

I think it was easy for Pelle to see that Dani was in a mental state to be seduced into the cult. She had just suffered a massive trauma by losing her parents and her sister. She didn’t appear to have any other family or good friends. Her boyfriend wasn’t into her any more. She didn’t seem excited about school or a career.
So I think at the end, Dani did want to stay with the cult. They showed her empathy and seemed happy to have her there. She also had nothing to go home to. So, since she made the decision to stay, she chose Christian to be sacrificed. She didn’t want to anger the cult members by choosing one of them to die, plus it was a way to burn away all of her old life.
And that final act, pushed her into insanity.
The last lines of the screenplay read (regarding Dani).
“A smile finally breaks onto Dani’s face. She has surrendered to a joy known only by the insane. She has lost herself completely and she is finally free. It is horrible and it is beautiful.”

The freakiest and coolest thing about this movie is how nobody lies about their culture. The entire time Pele tells half truths, but none of them ever lies when asked outright, only when covering up the murders. It truly shows that they see nothing wrong with their ways of thinking. That, and how it is never complete night time. Having the sun constantly shining with brightness and tranquility amongst a cult is so aesthetically different to the entire horror genre, I think it's part of what really made this movie stand out.

See thats what i like most about this movie. They didnt use a cult, that would give you a big bad to hate. This is just their culture, they have lived like this for centuries. It makes it harder to pick someone to hate on.

At 55:06 - "I bet no one else has ever died like that." Actually, that was another Viking ritual torture, to be burned alive in a bear. The bear skin constricts as it burns, squishing the person inside, as they are being cooked. So which aspect kills him? The burning? The asphyxiation because of smoke inhalation? The crushing of his organs? It's hard to say which comes first, but I am sure that all of it is painful.

The screaming in unison was to show empathy (something Dani never got from Christian). So she really did feel a since of family and support.

No, it was to fake empathy. It’s a classic cult tactic.

@@katwebbxo i have a theory about that. What if they only meant the feast happens every 90 years, but they do the murders every year? Because there has to be an annual may queen based on the photos we are shown. And we dont see any of the other may queens in the entire movie. It doesnt make sense that it would only happen once every 90 years if they have dozens of actual photographs and not jusr drawings of may queens? And the attestupe has to happen almost annually if not annually, people get killed at 72

    • @katwebbxo
      @katwebbxo 2 года назад +3

@@adamsmasher9769 That's definitely possible. I've wondered about it too. Idk how many people live there but there's has to be somebody reaching that age more often than 90 years.

Enjoyed the reaction- have to saying it's easier to notice things you brush past on the first watch. I'm not sure if you noticed, but around the few scenes after Connie isn't seen- you can hear a womans screams- about three times spread out. It's also hinted that she was trying to get away when Mark says "I saw Connie trying out for the sprinting Olympics earlier." Meaning she was seriously running- Pelle interrupts to keep them from asking more questions.
They also treat Dani different from the others- they welcome everyone, but tell Dani "Welcome Home". They try to introduce Dani the most to their customs, like the meat pie making, dancing, and the way they dress.
I have heard some say there's a theory that Pelle was the one who killed her family making it look like suicide, taking the parents with the sister. Since Dani says the message was very strange- and not like her. It would make her more likely to be vulnerable to join the cult, and make sure Christian couldn't break up with her before the trip. Pelle seems very fixated and happy about her coming- like it was part of his plan all along, even before she's invited.
At the same time it still could be her sister doing it. Her message to Dani I think was during it happening, everything is black- meaning the exhaust fumes were filling up the room and house. It likely was the last message she sent before dying right there.
I do think even if Dani didn't go, the events that happened would have still gone the way they did. Dani was very isolated and left alone a lot. Christian still would have 'mated' with the young girl, it just would have been more open from his end. Simon and Connie would have still freaked out, and made the village upset- resulting in their deaths. Josh still would have tried to get pictures- and have been killed. Mark still would have done something 'foolish' or disrespectful to their culture- and have been killed.
And Christian likely would have been chosen by one of the May Queens if it wasn't Dani. From their perspective he would have been a stranger, and easier to pick over the rest of the village members.

(spoilers) i think the part where they were singing their moans and crying with Dani was to illustrate the lack of individuality inside the cult. they share even feelings. ofc that Dani, that lost her family and is estranged from her awful bf is more susceptible to the cult in her vulnerability. not having to feel all of that alone anymore in exchange for her free will. it's what cults do.

I found you yesterday (since it's after midnight now) through Parasite and clicked on this because I've seen it already XD Absolutely love your channel and I can't wait for you to watch Hereditary now. Hereditary is by Ari Aster the same director as this film and Hereditary was his directorial debut and is phenomenal. Midsommar came out the year afterward and Ari Aster called this the ultimate breakup movie. I will not say anything about Hereditary because it's best to go into it not knowing anything about it but it is one of my absolute favorite movies hands down. Hereditary and All About Evil with Natasha Lyonne are my recommendations for sure!

I think her sister bringing her parents with her was alot of people who do comit murder suicides do it because they dont want their parents to be the one who find them. They dont want their parents to suffer after they are gone. It doesnt make it right AT all but the thinking behind it kinda makes sense in a way.
