I currently own the 2017 model 12.9 inch iPad Pro and I was kind of hoping the 2020 iPad Pro would come with an A14x 5nm processor but it didn't. Do you think an A14x 5nm processor iPad Pro will be possible fall of 2020 or next year 2021.

I ended up getting a MacBook Air so I can have a computer on the go. Then I was using my MacBook Air more than my iPad Pro, so I gave my iPad Pro to my niece and upgraded my Air to 16 Pro.

Even before watching I’ll come straight out and say iPad Pro all the way!!!! The Magic Keyboard has completely transformed the way I use my iPad in every way! I only have 3 gripes, which I hope they can fix. 1. External display support needs to get better. 2. I want to be able to use Google Hangout or Zoom fully featured ie. share my screen and be able to multitask while having video on and 3 give the option to have the arrow as the cursor like on the Mac for some apps. The best example of this is Keynote where sometimes I have to draw fine lines and neither my finger or the circle can pick precisely choose the line when I want.

Unfortunately this is how business works, apple want you to buy both. Why would they make full featured apps etc on iPadOS, their macbook revenue will seriously suffer. I have an imac for my desk and 13” macbook for portability without app/software limitations. More expensive this way but having no limits you have to pay top dollar for. I also find the iPad pro with smart folio keyboard top heavy and uncomfortable to work on the couch.

      The good:
-The instruction set is far better than x86 (three-operand with far more versatility than x86). It's far more complex than x86, but in a very good way. The more research you do, the more you'll find this is true. I could list five dozen things about the instruction set here, but I won't--it's more fun to go through the list and keep telling yourself "wait, it can do this?" A preview though: every single instruction is conditional and comes with a free shift.
-The chips are phenomenally low-size and low-power, so they're cheap and you can get a lot of them easily. They require much less overhead hardware than x86.
      -NEON is awesome! See 1).
-Every instruction is 4 bytes, making instruction decoding never a bottleneck. See 1).
      The bad:
-They're only just now getting modern features like out of order execution. The Cortex A9 is roughly the same speed per clock on scalar code as a Pentium 4. This is pretty pathetic. It's impressive when you think of the size of the chip, but it is really sad IMO that they haven't released a larger version of their chip that isn't ALU-bottlenecked, for netbooks and such.
-The clock speeds are rising, but are still pretty low. Multicore chips aren't out yet.
-Compilers for ARM seem to suck, especially GCC, which is orders of magnitude more braindead on ARM than on x86. I don't doubt there could be performance improvements of 20%+ just by making GCC stop emitting redundant loads, stores, and moves (the last of which should almost never be needed on a three-operand architecture). And by fixing its loop unrolling heuristic on ARM, which is incredibly braindead (it never considers partial unrolling and is far too aggressive). GCC is also completely incapable of correct stack alignment on ARM, forcing you to either use unaligned accesses for all NEON loads off stack objects, or force every single temporary data hunk into the heap.
-NEON instructions, while powerful, are nowhere near as fast as you'd be used to if you wrote x86 SIMD. Often you need fewer instructions (things like vtrn make life incredibly easy), but overall don't expect too much.
-Cortex A9, in order to fit in all the new features and not increase die size too much, dumped dual-issue for NEON. Idiots.
-There are no instructions in NEON that Do Tons of Stuff Really Fast, like psadbw and pmaddubsw on x86.
-While NEON in general has equal to or better SIMD than x86 in terms of the versatility of its instructions, a few critical x86 SIMD instructions are missing, like pmovmskb, which cannot be easily emulated.
-The interaction between NEON and ARM is a bizarre FIFO system with latencies as high as 20+ clocks between the two. It's painful. Mans Rullgard, ffmpeg ARM guru) has some blogs on the topic. Cortex A9 fixes a lot of this.
-Linux kernel support is fucking awful; you need half a dozen patches just to make things usable (NEON register support, unaligned access support, gdb support for NEON registers, making useful instructions not privileged, etc).
-People keep calling it RISC. It's not RISC, folks. It's far more complicated than x86 in every sense of the term; it has single instructions that will load up to 16 values from memory or push/pop multiple registers off the stack, for example. Complex instructions are a good thing when implemented intelligently. Also, being load/store does not make something automatically RISC. Don't abuse the word.
-Every instruction is 4 bytes. This means you can't have large constant memory offsets (which, given gcc's incredible inability to add constants to pointers to reduce struct offset sizes, drastically reduces efficiency of memory access to large structs). This 4 byte requirement also means ARM binaries are often larger than x86 binaries; not a good thing on CPUs with so little instruction cache. Thumb-2 resolves most of this, but GCC still sucks at it.

As I am an on the go type of guy I only find decent Wi-Fi about 30% of the time and you include the time I spend in a car but more than that you have a much higher level of security using cellular data than companies that offer free Wi-Fi as anybody can hack those networks relatively easy. I’m deciding between the iPad Pro 11 or 12.9. Upgrading from a 10.5 I love the portability but I feel like the 12.9 will help with productivity and trying new creative apps but the size makes me look at the pro 11. Then again .5 inches is not a much of a difference but the 12.9 just seems to big but I like it. Just wish they made a 12” one to settle my 🧠.

Agree with your analysis. It really isn’t a question of either or, but how they complement each other. I have the 16” as my main computer mostly stationed at home with a large external monitor and keyboard, and then my 11” iPad Pro for maximum portability. Best of both worlds used interchangeably and complementary depending on situation...

I produce lots of PPs, and regularly using multiple browsers and tabs at the same time, do lots of typing producing documents... For me the iPad Pro with the new keyboard does everything I need to do and then some, and the benefit of an always there LTE connection to serve as a backup for when my lousy home internet goes wacky on me or for when on the go is essential. If I were to get a traditional computer, it would be just for the sake of having it, and I’d probably be better off with an iMac rather than a MacBook, since I watch a lot of media and would prefer the larger screen.

For what it’s worth, I ordered the 10th Gen 13 MacBook Pro, and plan on selling my 2018 iPad Pro to partly fund the cost. I am a teacher and the iPad Pro worked great as my primary device when I was in the classroom full-time. Teachers walk around a lot in their day, and the iPad was really portable, and comfortable using while standing. Now that we’re all doing online learning, the software deficiencies of the iPad’s ecosystem have become too much of a weight on productivity while sitting at a desk. Which is better? As always: depends on your circumstances. But now many of our circumstances don’t leverage the extra portability of the iPad any longer.

The one thing I’m not thrilled about is the feeling that’s it’s fast paced talking. It feels like you are rushing through it. Maybe because you are trying to fit in as much info as you can in a period of time, IDK. There should be pauses inserted in order for the viewers to be able digest the info. A good example would to watch major network anchors presenting the news. Apart from that I love it. Good luck

Honestly if you don’t have any specific apps you need on MacOS, you would absolutely be better off with an iPad. It’s just so much more fun to use abs every bit as capable at the typical laptop stuff like browsing the web, listening to music, playing videos and much better at games (well... depends). So I would suggest people get the iPad as default and only get a MacBook if they really need it. I have the iPad Pro 11 for my college and I don’t even need the magic keyboard because as it is it’s super capable!

Macs still have more traditional, powerful NLEs like Premiere, Resolve, and Final Cut, plus more RAM and SSD space, which is why I stick with a Mac for editing. I know a lot of people like editing on the iPad though, so a lot will depend on how you feel and what capacity you need.

I have a 2017 iPad Pro that I have been dying to find an excuse to replace with the newest iPad Pro and a magic keyboard. Instead I just received my MacBook Pro 13" (2020) to replace my wonderful, yet aging, 2014 MacBook Pro. I was hanging on to it until Apple resolved the keyboard issue.
I have so many times gone on trips only with the iPad, in the hopes of being able to get the things I need to do done efficiently. Not possible. Every single time I have had to borrow someone else's MacOS or Windows machine to get my email newsletter out or complete some other task that is either impossible on iOS or intensely frustrating. It is such a joy to sit here and work on the MacBook and then later go consume media and read email on the iPad. As much as I would love to have that new iPad in my hands, I can't justify it. This MacBook Pro is a joy.

But if you have extra money to spend an iPad Air will do the job for those things mentioned.

This is exactly why Apple is smart in distinguishing features between the MacBook and iPad Pro models, so buying both will get you all the features you want.
My list of important (to me) features are:
    Exclusive to iPad
    • High quality camera systems
    • Apple Pencil support
    • Detachable keyboard
    • Face ID for Unlock/Apple Pay
    Exclusive to MacBook
    • Full-function keyboard with function key control in a Touch Bar
    • Final Cut Pro/Logic X with all features
    • Larger (16”) display option
    • Support for more than two windows of the same program/app (you can have as many Pages documents open at the same time)
At the same time, I’m waiting for the iPad Pro to get updated to the A14 chip (not because the current A12Z is slow, but for future proofing sake) and waiting for Wi-Fi 6 and the latest gen chips on the MacBook Pro 16” so I can’t buy either device right now. The first-world-struggle is real!

  • @s3cr3tpassword

Just think of all the software you will need to use. If there is one that can’t run on the iPad you’ll need a laptop. The chip architecture is different enough that some devs can’t port over laptop apps to the iPad. I’m a scientist and would to fully transition to the iPad but unfortunately there are a lot of graph fitting and plotting softwares that only comes on the laptop.
When it comes to teaching I can set everything up using only my iPad. It even lets me draw the diagrams I need! Love it.
I can tell from other videos that devs has started development on video and photo editing. So I’m certain those professionals can substitute their work using the iPad.
As you said in your video, It ultimately comes down to developers to make the apps needed to cover all kinds of apps for all kinds of work.

I'm not sure how relevant this is in your comparison, but in one sense the iPad is more modular. There is therefore an element of extensibility to the iPad that is not possible with the MacBook. I am thinking specifically of the keyboard dock and the smart connector. If for example you should spill coffee on your keyboard it would be game over on the MacBook. However this would be less of a problem on the iPad. It would still suck, but at least you would not have to replace the whole system.
