I have the 2018 R-Dynamic Velar with heated and cooled seats. 280 turbo. Didn't do the massage seats. Paid $65k. I agree, the auto start/stop is annoying but I'm used to just turning it off everytime I start the car at this point. I'm an Android user so the Apple car thing isn't something I miss. Never had the radio issue happen but I have had some other technical glitches, all of which were remedied by updates. But, at the end of the day, it is British technology.....not necessarily the best (lol). Overall, LOVE my Velar!
People talking about the car is 70 G and you can get heated seats in a car that's 45 screw that you can get heated seats in a car that is $20, 000. And that's brand new with a backup camera and navigation system.
I work at JLR and my personal view is that the reason the option doesn’t exist to keep the stop-start off permanently is because that isn’t allowed if we are to claim the CO2 benefit of the feature. In non-US markets, people don’t mind stop-start nearly as much. This is the same for all premium car manufacturers you’ll find. If you had the option to disable stop-start permanently Land Rover would be forced to downsize the engine options etc. just to meet fuel economy regulations. Customer would prefer to touch a button each time they drive to disable the feature than be given less choice on other performance features
after seeing your video.. my 2020 RANGER rover svr in manhattan doesn't stop as you said and i have over 20,000 miles on it bro!! It works as a charm.. its all depends who is behind the wheels.. just like lewis hamilton!!! Car is still going strong!!!

The last BMW I had did that weird Radio thing! With mine, it happened if I got a call while I was playing music (or the radio) and I get a phone call. The Bluetooth would mute the music and switch to the call. If during the call I switched off the engine and removed the Key, the call would still come through the car. If I walk away from the car, the voice would still come out of the car speakers!! LOL!! OK, now, if I de-select the car (on the phone) and select the normal Earpiece, the person's voice would come out of the phone as usual. But, the music would start playing in the car again! And there's absolutely nothing you can do about it. You have to wait until you finish the call, go back to the car, unlock it, put the Key Fob in, start it up, wait for the Phone to connect, and stop the engine. Bizzare!
The auto start/stop is also one of the most annoying things on my 2017 Full size. If you click the seatbelt in and out 10x in a row you'll hear a chime which basically permanently disables the seatbelt chime, but I also discovered doing so also disables the auto start/stop. thank me later ;)
When I saw the piano black touchscreen areas, I knew the Velar was not the car for me, unfortunately. Beautiful car, but too 'delicate' for my lifestyle..which is probably why I drive a Defender.
I had the radio issue with my BMW- it ended up being an easy fix. Just hit the engine start button on the car with your foot off the pedal and it'll turn everything off. Hope that helps.
MarKicks&Whips Hey. Just an FYI, I just experienced that thing with the radio still playing when you turn the car off and close the door. It was odd and a bit frustrating. But what I did was turn the screens off in its entirety. The small middle button between the two larger turn dials is what I am referring to. I press that small middle button and the screens will turn completely off. The screens can operate separately from the car itself I guess. So just be sure to press that middle button to avoid the radio still playing

The apple carplay is annoying but it's just a firmware/software update that it needs. Just gotta be patient. The cool thing about it being a software update is that it's ACTUALLY just a software update that it needs, and not BUYING a new year model to get it.
I bought the new Discovery. And I absolutely love it!! I got the luxury HSE package... blacked out, 20 inch black gloss rims... two toned black/gray and it came with heat/cool seats front and back. My next one will be the Velar. I also HATE the auto stop/start. I turn the stupid thing off immediately after I start the car. It's a habit now. Lol

Yes, the stop-start is a pain on all automatic transmission cars, including my own Volvo. Yes, fingerprints on glass touchscreens are again a common problem. I solved it on my Volvo by using a tailored matte screen film. This might not be available for Velar or 2019 big Range Rovers yet, but I bet they soon will be. It honestly transforms the screen to eliminate all fingerprints. There is a slight loss of contrast, but after five minutes it isn’t noticeable. Bought mine from eBay. Search Ebay for Brotect matte screen protector for XC90 to see what I mean and maybe for Velar too. It has to be matte to be effective. I’ve had similar film on iPhones and it’s great for those too.
I love my new 2018 Range Rover Velar, but the technology is crazy. Plus, to renew the internet connection, it's an extra $20.00 per month once the free trial runs out. Why don't they tell you that from the start? Also, I "was told" Apple Car Play worked with the Velar. Found out too late it did not and my iPhone X is not fully compatible. Frustrating. I hope future updates have remedies.
The small tank is a deal breaker for me...but that start/stop is the second dealbreaker. Lastly, the slick door handles look great but another feature that is bound to break in the cold east coast after many winters...no thanks. The X5 or Q5 for me...
We all have to live with auto start stop on newer cars. It's the cost of car companies trying to be environmentally friendly while still giving you impressive hp & torque. What you should do to reduce that jolt is to anticipate when you want to go and give it a second or 2 between realeasing your break and stepping on it. Lead footed people will be asking "why should I have to do anything to comply?"
dafuuuq man the first thing you said is actually an option when you select eco mode!!! you can turn off the auto stop i believe you have dynamic mode when you turn it on no more stops
i have the p380 r dynamic hse model. according to my dealership ... apple car play and android play will be a software update that will come out in the future. auto start stop is good for fuel efficiency. wipe the screen and take care of it or wash hands more often. ive encountered the radio issue as well. an issue i have had regularly is playing music through bluetooth or while plugging my phone in... it usually trips out and greys out ipod and leaves bluetooth on but then clicking on bluetooth doesnt work and then i have to restart car.
The jaguar/land rover infotainment computer is really not the best. The main reason I won't get a velar is because it's more reliant on the infotainment this time with the 3rd screen.
The one thing that I agree with you as a potential buyer... That tiny ass Gas Tank! Everything else is non factor. Congrats on the new ride and the decent review.
Have you been in touch with the service department at your local Land Rover Dealership where you bought the car from about the radio playing music when you have turned the whole car off? have they told you if they can fix it or not?

I have the Auto-stop feature on the 2016 Discovery. Annoying indeed, and in this other way: when you take the seatbelt off, the car thinks: "he did a full stop and removed his seat belt = he must want to get out" so the car shuts down and goes to park. I have had this happen at a pay/toll booth, where I reached in my pocket for change (I removed the seat belt...) and the car stopped and went to park... Artificial intelligence failure.... I think if you wash your hands more frequently, then you will have fewer prints on the screen o:) Heated/Cooled seats comes at an additional 1,320 price tag. So, Aggie4life77: it sort of comes standard on a 71,320 car... o:) As you said, this is an amazing vehicle. I am buying soon, Apple car play or not, and despite auto-stop... My only dilemma: Aruba or Silicone silver?

Question. We just purchased a velar last week and it does look great but today we just seen the 2018 updated RR Sport. It has the updated dash like the velar and right now we are contemplating switching the velar out for it only because we would really prefer a bigger car. Have you seen or driven the new 2018 RR Sport? Would you consider trading for it?
Ive seen it and i really do not like the front end. Visually the velar looks better. My next range will have to be an SVR tho. But if you need a bigger car id forsure get the sport.

Sounds like the small tank and Stop/Start are getting in the way of your enjoyment. I'm afraid that may be the price you have to pay for buying European. In certain markets, official hydrocarbon emissions and fuel consumption fugures, that is, the figures manufacturers are permitted to quote, are measured over a pre-determined, often simulated driving cycle using cars fuelled to a specific percentage of their tank capacity. The larger that capacity is, the more fuel - and therefore weight - has to be carried at the start of the test. Naturally more weight negatively impacts emissions and consumption figures. This leads in some cases to cars being marketed with a standard fuel tank (i.e. a small capacity tank that offers a weight advantage in goverment tests) with an option to specify a larger tank at no extra cost. Owners of certain Porsche vehicles, for example, have even less chance than most of acheiving the already unrealistic numbers they have been quoted when you consider most will tick the 'free' option of a larger tank. In Porsche's favour, they at least give their customers the opportunity to mitigate the inconvenience of an impractical fuel capacity. A period stationary in traffic is also simulated in the test driving cycle. Obviously having the motor shut down during this time improves emissions and fuel consumption. Like the aforementioned small fuel tank, this Stop/Start functionality must be a standard feature for the manufacturer to quote test results resulting from its use. But for Stop/Start to be considered standard equipment in this context, it must be a default function. Manufacturers could easily have their Stop/Start systems default to 'off' or memorise the last position set, but the cars they submit to governmental environment agencies would then be 'driven' with the system turned off, just like you, I and most other customers would most of the time. Rest assured that before long there will be an industry in re-programming Stop/Start to suit the user rather than the marketeers, if it doesn't already exist.

The auto stop and start is called eco mode. Edit: for what i know u can turn the eco mode off if you dont want to use it. Edit: i thought that it wouldn't turn on but after u said i was like -oh..
the only reason why ur phone has less fingerprints is because the fingerprints wipes off when u put it in ur pocket or bag unlike the screen in ur car u have to wipe it off. congrats on ur new car!!!

FYI......Jaguar-Land Rover vehicles don't support Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. None of them. I guess he should've done more research beforehand. They also have a 3G WiFi hotspot in the 2016 and 2017 models, but I'm not sure about their 2018's.
MarKicks&Whips It most likely won't be a retro-fit upgrade which might involve software compatibility issues, especially if you only have 3G WiFi availability. 4G LTE is the most current platform for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. At best it'll be introduced on 2019 or 2020 models. FYI....My 2017 Volvo XC90 R-Design has mostly the same features as your Velar with better standard safety technology, and standard 4G LTE with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.....I'm just saying (lol). Heated and cooled seats also.
Very fair review I thought about buying but really I know Range Rover will have these kind of issues, so it’s hard to make up my mind. Not like a bmw, it’s always perfect when it comes out, but I had too many of them I want to try somethings good for off road
The auto stop and start thing is annoying as all hell, dose it on my new kia stinger too and also defaults to on every time you get back in the car. i have gotten used to it for the most part but its summer and the damn AC turns off at every stop light and that's bloody annoying. not sure if that also happens in the RR but apparently that's what vehicles are doing now to save a thimble full of gas...

50 bucks for 20 gallons? Amazing. It’s a British car. Over here 20 gallons would cost you $160! You can imagine the complaints every time we had to fill it up! (The petrol Velar doesn’t sell well outside the US. ) That’s why we all drive diesels. 3l V6 300 BHP and 45+ mpg. More Fun and we don’t go broke driving them.
Start stop on any car is fantastic. I've no idea how anyone can moan about it. It literally doesn't affect your driving of the car at all, but it reduces fuel usage, reduces pollution and reduces noise. Anyone who turns off the feature has a screw loose in my opinion - just get used to it, get over it.
#1 and #2 on your list are mandated by the NHTSA and EPA regulations. Auto start-stop is EPA mandated to turn back on at every ignition cycle. I hate it too, but don't blame the car. Thank our benevolent government. Don't like gas tank sizes? Same, in order to shed enough weight to make CAFE numbers, all the tanks get smaller. SO true about the screens! Should be oil-phobic screens.

Why are people complaining about no Apple or Droid? Its useless. Use your phone via bluetooth, where its most useful anyway. I have the 95K Velar, with the supercharged V6 380HP. Funny part is that I get the same MPG lol. Massage seats worth it, I hate fuel tank size.

Land Rover should offer an option to permanently switch off the stop/start function and also include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Start and stop is a way to conserve gas. That’s why it automatically turns back on when you put gas in it. Some may forget to turn it back on.
I have a GMC that does the same thing with the radio that the RR does. It's not every time but it does it a few times a month. Crazy shit!

The small tank is a deal breaker for me...but that start/stop is the second dealbreaker. Lastly, the slick door handles look great but another feature that is bound to break in the cold east coast after many winters...no thanks. The X5 or Q5 for me...
They tested them in like -40 degrees so that won't be a problem hopefully lol

We all have to live with auto start stop on newer cars. It's the cost of car companies trying to be environmentally friendly while still giving you impressive hp & torque. What you should do to reduce that jolt is to anticipate when you want to go and give it a second or 2 between realeasing your break and stepping on it. Lead footed people will be asking "why should I have to do anything to comply?"

I can roll with you on the small tank because one thing I really love about my Touareg is the 25gal tank so I get a 500mile range after a fill up.

i have the p380 r dynamic hse model. according to my dealership ... apple car play and android play will be a software update that will come out in the future. auto start stop is good for fuel efficiency. wipe the screen and take care of it or wash hands more often. ive encountered the radio issue as well. an issue i have had regularly is playing music through bluetooth or while plugging my phone in... it usually trips out and greys out ipod and leaves bluetooth on but then clicking on bluetooth doesnt work and then i have to restart car.
The jaguar/land rover infotainment computer is really not the best. The main reason I won't get a velar is because it's more reliant on the infotainment this time with the 3rd screen.

I have the Auto-stop feature on the 2016 Discovery. Annoying indeed, and in this other way: when you take the seatbelt off, the car thinks: "he did a full stop and removed his seat belt = he must want to get out" so the car shuts down and goes to park. I have had this happen at a pay/toll booth, where I reached in my pocket for change (I removed the seat belt...) and the car stopped and went to park... Artificial intelligence failure....
I think if you wash your hands more frequently, then you will have fewer prints on the screen o:)

Question. We just purchased a velar last week and it does look great but today we just seen the 2018 updated RR Sport. It has the updated dash like the velar and right now we are contemplating switching the velar out for it only because we would really prefer a bigger car. Have you seen or driven the new 2018 RR Sport? Would you consider trading for it?
Ive seen it and i really do not like the front end. Visually the velar looks better. My next range will have to be an SVR tho. But if you need a bigger car id forsure get the sport.
Get the sport for more leg room, trunk space, more power, and better offroading. If you don't need all of that then the velar is perfect for you.

Sounds like the small tank and Stop/Start are getting in the way of your enjoyment. I'm afraid that may be the price you have to pay for buying European.
In certain markets, official hydrocarbon emissions and fuel consumption fugures, that is, the figures manufacturers are permitted to quote, are measured over a pre-determined, often simulated driving cycle using cars fuelled to a specific percentage of their tank capacity. The larger that capacity is, the more fuel - and therefore weight - has to be carried at the start of the test. Naturally more weight negatively impacts emissions and consumption figures.
This leads in some cases to cars being marketed with a standard fuel tank (i.e. a small capacity tank that offers a weight advantage in goverment tests) with an option to specify a larger tank at no extra cost. Owners of certain Porsche vehicles, for example, have even less chance than most of acheiving the already unrealistic numbers they have been quoted when you consider most will tick the 'free' option of a larger tank. In Porsche's favour, they at least give their customers the opportunity to mitigate the inconvenience of an impractical fuel capacity.
A period stationary in traffic is also simulated in the test driving cycle. Obviously having the motor shut down during this time improves emissions and fuel consumption. Like the aforementioned small fuel tank, this Stop/Start functionality must be a standard feature for the manufacturer to quote test results resulting from its use. But for Stop/Start to be considered standard equipment in this context, it must be a default function. Manufacturers could easily have their Stop/Start systems default to 'off' or memorise the last position set, but the cars they submit to governmental environment agencies would then be 'driven' with the system turned off, just like you, I and most other customers would most of the time.
Rest assured that before long there will be an industry in re-programming Stop/Start to suit the user rather than the marketeers, if it doesn't already exist.

the only reason why ur phone has less fingerprints is because the fingerprints wipes off when u put it in ur pocket or bag unlike the screen in ur car u have to wipe it off. congrats on ur new car!!!

FYI......Jaguar-Land Rover vehicles don't support Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. None of them. I guess he should've done more research beforehand. They also have a 3G WiFi hotspot in the 2016 and 2017 models, but I'm not sure about their 2018's.

It most likely won't be a retro-fit upgrade which might involve software compatibility issues, especially if you only have 3G WiFi availability. 4G LTE is the most current platform for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. At best it'll be introduced on 2019 or 2020 models. FYI....My 2017 Volvo XC90 R-Design has mostly the same features as your Velar with better standard safety technology, and standard 4G LTE with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.....I'm just saying (lol). Heated and cooled seats also.

The auto stop and start thing is annoying as all hell, dose it on my new kia stinger too and also defaults to on every time you get back in the car. i have gotten used to it for the most part but its summer and the damn AC turns off at every stop light and that's bloody annoying. not sure if that also happens in the RR but apparently that's what vehicles are doing now to save a thimble full of gas...

50 bucks for 20 gallons? Amazing. It’s a British car. Over here 20 gallons would cost you $160! You can imagine the complaints every time we had to fill it up! (The petrol Velar doesn’t sell well outside the US. ) That’s why we all drive diesels. 3l V6 300 BHP and 45+ mpg. More Fun and we don’t go broke driving them.

Start stop on any car is fantastic. I've no idea how anyone can moan about it. It literally doesn't affect your driving of the car at all, but it reduces fuel usage, reduces pollution and reduces noise. Anyone who turns off the feature has a screw loose in my opinion - just get used to it, get over it.

#1 and #2 on your list are mandated by the NHTSA and EPA regulations. Auto start-stop is EPA mandated to turn back on at every ignition cycle. I hate it too, but don't blame the car. Thank our benevolent government. Don't like gas tank sizes? Same, in order to shed enough weight to make CAFE numbers, all the tanks get smaller.

Why are people complaining about no Apple or Droid? Its useless. Use your phone via bluetooth, where its most useful anyway.
