This is definitely the most amazing piece of animation I’ve seen to date, but I personally wouldn’t say the uncanny valley has been fully crossed yet. The eyes, mouth and general body movements are still not quite there. The eyes still look ever so slightly dead, like the guy is not fully “awake”, and the mouth is a bit stiff. It boils down to being able to simulate the subtle micro movements and expressions on people’s faces when they talk due to the intricate system of muscles in the human face.
@Heffalumpz Uncanny Valley threshold is different to anyone, and also you can feel it for even just a moment until you noticed those flaws. For me it fooled my brain for a several seconds but I still crossed it. About the eyes and expression in this example it could be just a tool because it makes sense for the mood of this scene. For me it's always lighting that reveals fakeness and most of the scene is dark anyway, don't get me wrong they actually did a ton of work to make te faces reflect light better in meta human. Hardest thing to look natural in movies and games is still realistic lighting reflections on complex tissues like skin, fur, fabrics. It takes some time to gather data with your eyes to be able to notice it, but still first glimpses at the face are what the helllllllll!?
The Chuckle Blink at 0:33 needs touch up i think , its ... jitttery. But this is amazing stuff. Hopefully, the animation cleanup was much easier because of MH Animator

I'm a professional 3D Artist and this is so extremely impressive and frightening at the same time. You struggle really hard to keep up with the speed of development. It's just crazy how good that looks in every way. Lighting, Animation, Skin slide, Hair, Sound... just everything is on another level.
Imagine how many hours of work and pain it will save us! I've been using regular Live Link and on its own it already gives some result, but this is another level...
The animation and visuals are insane, but I feel like I grew to know this character in this short time. The voice acting & music really sold everything, let's not forget about them!
I was totally blown away by the level of realism in this character's face that I didn't even care about the whole theme. That skin texture and those soulful facial expressions. This is truly Unreal!!
The technology, the execution, the quality, the performance is no Doubt amazing. But the story telling and the storyline behind this is the HEART of the Film.🙏
I am not sure if I am blown away by the top-level realism or the accuracy of the facial movements. But one thing is certain, I am definitely blown away!

Watched it upscaled to 60fps on my OLED TV, looks WAY more realistic compared to 24fps, which is a cinematic framerate, where 60fps is a realistic framerate, so please unreal engine, upscale the video to 60fps, and upload it again, so people who don't have an expensive trumotion capable TV can see the difference I'm talking about on my device.

The first time I saw a CG realistic human being with zero “uncanny valley”. All the micro expressions are there. Only the final shot with direct light kinda gives it away. But still absolutely phenomenal!
Professional 3d guy here.... just wanna say first minute I was trying to figure out if I am looking at a real person or a 3d character even though was obvious from the context it's 3d. Well done we are there. Films can be done with digital doubles. You amazing crazy bastards you did it!!!! Well done everyone involved. I must say I had tears in my eyes it touched me on a deep emotional level.
The uncanny valley is in our rear view mirror now. The only thing that still gives it away a bit are the teeth but it's rapidly getting there. Wow. Hats off.

I don't know which overwhelmed me more, watching that amazing piece of short cinema, which is truly a work of art, or that the power to create such beauty and wonder lies in our own hands. Bravo! Congratulations to all the teams on what must surely be the most EPIC of all days. Walls and barriers in creativity, inspiration, and storytelling are dissolving every day it seems. So, this is the single most realistic metahuman example I've seen. At first, I really just thought it was filmed traditionally. Most meta human examples I've seen, you can tell it's animated within a few seconds. This one, you could watch the entirety and it look photographic and realistically human throughout the video. There needs to be an instructional video explaining how this level of quality was achieved compared to most every other example I've seen. Not just in the lighting and skin, but with respect to the actual facial animation. Most examples I've seen using metahuman just aren't human like enough in their motions, but this absolutely was. I don't know how/why this one was so much better compared to all the examples I've seen where people use Livelink and show their work. What is different here than what people are doing straight out of the box?

Outstanding! In 1080p, with the RUclips compression, there are parts where I legit stopped seeing the CGI. The limitations of the CGI are more pronounced in 4K, but it still looks absolutely amazing.

Wow this is flabbergasting. This is absolutely amazing. It captures a lot of the essence of a human. The nuances in facial expression and eye movements are very real. The way the skin looks and the light is reflected from the skin and hair is how it should be.
I can still see it, very rarely in this whole showcase, I can see the cracks, but this is very rapidly approaching perfection. I know almost for sure I wouldn't notice if I weren't looking for them. My parents can't already, they are not used to seeing CGI, their eyes not accustomed to this kind of things. When I told my dad this was not a real video he straight up didn't believe me. This is both awe inspiring and absolutely terrifying. We already live in the era of post truth: what will happen to reality, to facts, when we can fabricate perfect, indistinguishable replicas of them, out of thin air with a bit of help from AI? What will truth even be worth then? Exciting and scary times we're living in ladies and gents.
For once a video without s single negative comment, just pure excitement, jaw dropping disbelief, and deep appreciation all around, would imagine the video also has 0 dislikes, if we could see that… Also, please up the video quality to 4K60fps!

My last realistic sci fi short film had Metahumans but I had to force myself to change the story because the free livelink plugin didn't do good lip sync. You'll see in the short the characters look around more than talking. Having powerful and free tools like this allows people like me to tell the story exactly how we want without any compromises!

Ridiculous! That is the best word to feat the most realistic and stunning animation ever. The face lift, the realism of lights, the movements, all on Metahuman are becoming the most important engine on 2024. To me it´s an out of stage innovation that nobody is hyping, but surprinsingly will appear to world even.

Even lighting is almost perfect. Slight shimmering at 03:08 on the brows, but that's all that I noticed for the face. Truly spectacular. Also great as a short.
Wow, we're about to witness Epic Games pushing the boundaries of the uncanny valley with this. I'm willing to bet that in another 5 or 10 years, we'll have seamless and indistinguishable meshes for real human faces. It's awesome!

Sure enough, a 4d scan of the skin was made and exported to the tool to create the pbr material. Thanks to Epic this is possible in metahuman to create custom characters.
I know Epic games get a lot of crap for their games and stuff, but they’ve always been incredible when it comes to unreal engine, always forget that they’re the ones who made it, mad respect for UE5, metahuman, and this demo, seriously.
Depends on the principle. If you're expecting to see this in games, it's a long ways away. Remember the Andy Serkis demo in UE4 using 3Lateral and Cubic Motion middleware? It's great for movies and cinematics, but doesn't translate so well to real-time runtime environments.
You have to be when your engine is also used in other industries outside of gaming like films, animation, architecture, engineering design, and so much more.

i'd love to see a behind the scenes of this one- metahuman is indeed amazing but I feel like a lot of the facial animations I've seen still look gamey with lip syncs that don't look quite right, or face morphs that don't quite match the expression of the actor. without seeing how it was made I feel like an animator must have spent days if not weeks going through and doing manual cleanup to get the performance looking correct. would love to be proven wrong if this is not the case, it would truly be revolutionary if this is a raw capture straight into UE5- but I worry this demo is an overpolished marketing piece that doesn't actually represent what we can expect during normal game development
1:54 I think there's still a bit of flickering and artifacting around the hairline with shadows being casted and highlights but apart from this, quite possibly one of the most realistic real time renderings ever created.
Very well guys. The last thing to pay attention to is "Teeth". Once that is done, we really can't tell difference. At least to my eyes. Kudos to the team.

This is both awe inspiring and absolutely terrifying. We already live in the era of post truth: what will happen to reality, to facts, when we can fabricate perfect, indistinguishable replicas of them, out of thin air with a bit of help from AI?
What will truth even be worth then?

My last realistic sci fi short film had Metahumans but I had to force myself to change the story because the free livelink plugin didn't do good lip sync. You'll see in the short the characters look around more than talking. Having powerful and free tools like this allows people like me to tell the story exactly how we want without any compromises!

Ridiculous! That is the best word to feat the most realistic and stunning animation ever. The face lift, the realism of lights, the movements, all on Metahuman are becoming the most important engine on 2024. To me it´s an out of stage innovation that nobody is hyping, but surprinsingly will appear to world even.

Even lighting is almost perfect. Slight shimmering at 03:08 on the brows, but that's all that I noticed for the face. Truly spectacular. Also great as a short.
Wow, we're about to witness Epic Games pushing the boundaries of the uncanny valley with this. I'm willing to bet that in another 5 or 10 years, we'll have seamless and indistinguishable meshes for real human faces. It's awesome!

I gotta to admit. The facial animation is very realistic and to me, it's more realistic than Avatar. I sometimes forget I'm watching a CGI rendered using a game engine. This is hyperrealistic. It's hard to spot the uncanny valley.

Sure enough, a 4d scan of the skin was made and exported to the tool to create the pbr material. Thanks to Epic this is possible in metahuman to create custom characters.
UE5 is so ahead of the competition its insane
I know Epic games get a lot of crap for their games and stuff, but they’ve always been incredible when it comes to unreal engine, always forget that they’re the ones who made it, mad respect for UE5, metahuman, and this demo, seriously.
Depends on the principle. If you're expecting to see this in games, it's a long ways away. Remember the Andy Serkis demo in UE4 using 3Lateral and Cubic Motion middleware? It's great for movies and cinematics, but doesn't translate so well to real-time runtime environments.
This is definitely path tracing. You wont see this in games for a long time
You have to be when your engine is also used in other industries outside of gaming like films, animation, architecture, engineering design, and so much more.

i'd love to see a behind the scenes of this one- metahuman is indeed amazing but I feel like a lot of the facial animations I've seen still look gamey with lip syncs that don't look quite right, or face morphs that don't quite match the expression of the actor. without seeing how it was made I feel like an animator must have spent days if not weeks going through and doing manual cleanup to get the performance looking correct. would love to be proven wrong if this is not the case, it would truly be revolutionary if this is a raw capture straight into UE5- but I worry this demo is an overpolished marketing piece that doesn't actually represent what we can expect during normal game development

1:54 I think there's still a bit of flickering and artifacting around the hairline with shadows being casted and highlights but apart from this, quite possibly one of the most realistic real time renderings ever created.
