    Kids are very interesting and smart in their own way. I'm not a parent but I wouldn't force a kid to understand something their not ready for. If my kid ever asked me "where do babies come from?" I would explain it scientific way without going into deep with the process of the hanky panky. Like kids don't need to know what you do they just need to know how the baby is formed.

She also taught me a lot about periods, which I was very grateful for when I got my first one at ten years old.

    My experience with "the birds and the bees" discussion was when my dad forgot I was watching "The Matrix 3" with him and he forgot to block my eyes during a certain scene. He was so distracted that when I asked, "What's that?", he answered, "Sex.". Then something in his brain clicked on.
    Dad: O.O
    Me: O.O
    Next day, he called for me in order to have "the discussion". He got a dusty book from the closet (because apparently he had been prepared for this for years) and read me a story about another pair of kids getting "the talk" and then sex-ed at school. Apparently the boy in the story had homework assignment where he had to draw sperm as part of a diagram, except he drew them into a recreation of a Star Wars space battle. And that's how I learned about human reproduction... and Star Wars.

    I agree with Felix, it’s definitely a subject that should be taught in school. Sex education is crucial and not all parents are qualified to teach it to their children.
    An alarming amount of adults in the USA (and I consider any an alarming amount) think women pee out of their vaginas. And many others are incredibly misinformed about other aspects of sex ed because of their own lacklustre education on the subject.
    I firmly believe that all children entering puberty should know how their reproductive systems work and what changes to expect. Girls can have periods as young as 8 years old. I couldn’t imagine the fear of having a first period before my parent decided I was old enough to learn about them.
    For the record, I grew up in Canada and we have sex education every year starting in grade 5/6 through grade 9 (aka freshman year of high school) with more age-appropriate information learned each year. And sex education doesn’t stop parents from having “the talk” (as we called it) with their kids, they know when we are going to start the health class unit on sex ed and many parents choose to have a discussion with their kids before hand like mine did.

    When I was a kid, I had books that would talk about any kinds of stuff. Like how society works and how everyone has a role( nurse, police officer, blah blah ), space and most importantly biology. The biology book was really helpful because there was a section about humans and it would speak about ovulation and how a woman can get pregnant, how my body looks and the names of my parts ( also the boy parts). It was so helpful because the way it was explained was so simple yet it covered things really well. There was literally a section that explained how to say no when you don’t want any form of physical touch( hugs,kisses,) and how sexual harassment looks like and how to say no too. Wished I remembered the names of the books.

    Asking the kid what they know is actually a good way of checking what level of understanding they have so you can think what kind of explanation you can give without making them uncomfortable or traumatized :)

    • @kunilsen2519
      @kunilsen2519 2 года назад +19

      Of course, but it depends on how you are asking, as well as the situation. It's easy to make kids feel stupid/silly/less by asking or talking about things in a way that is (currently) above their knowledge. Sometimes it can be hard to find the right tone that may/will comfortably educate them instead of making it seem like you are talking down on them or putting them on the spot.
      From what I saw (not knowing this girl personally), the situation and how it was asked was not ideal, though it is good to let children share their knowledge first and help and/or direct it as nessecery.

    I also just got a book that told me about how babies were made, I never had one single conversation with my parents about it, tho at a older age I didn't know what periods was, and that was one year before I started having them. But I learned everything from school so my parents didn't really have to worry about it.
