    △About Off-Track Family:
    We are a family of 4 with 2 children. We are overlanding for years now on wild tracks in our Land Rover Defender 110.
    Our expedition vehicle is a Land Rover Defender camper conversion. Some people say it’s more like a bug out vehicle but for us it’s the perfect 4wd off-road tourer with best 4x4 camping set-up.
    We bought this 4wd rig brand-new in 2009 and the engine is the 2.4 tdci Puma version. We transformed it time after time in a real overland 4x4 touring camper and it’s now a perfect off-grid truck for wild camping, bivouac, or simply as an overlanding Defender.
    We love enjoying time in nature and exploring the world as a family.

    I’m ex army and I think you need to spend more time prepping your vehicle before you go .
    I’ve done 18 overland trips and I’ve never taken that amount of stuff
    I’ve driven the whole length of Africa and didn’t even pop a headlight bulb oh and our vehicle was 10 years old with 230,000 km on the clock…if you are taking things like shock bushes just change them before you go and you will definitely make your journey
    The problem with spares is that you end up carrying another vehicle inside.
    I tend to decide if the part that breaks will stop me or just be noisy….
    Definitely thin down the amount of stuff you take
    Also when on a trip drive incredibly slowly and carefully and you will likely not have any problems
    Good luck with your adventures but definitely reduce weight, I’ve seen chassis snap being overloaded

    I have a lot of spare parts and tools with me as well. Repairing or temporarily fixing something is a (FUN) part of Overlanding. Also, if duct-tape doesn't do the trick... Use more ;)

      Thanks a lot for your message! Yes it's part of the 4x4 overlanding game ;) and absolutely correct for duct tape :)

    Don't forget fencing wire or bailing wire. Nice to see a layout of typical LR defender parts, I have and carry the same.

    When I first started out I carried a lot of tools and spares like you. 30 years later my Range Rover classic never seems to need anything so I only carry a drawstring bag with a few basic tools.

      Thanks for sharing! Sure this can change over time and it's good to adapt. Until now we very often used spares and tools during our road trips (also for helping others) so we feel it's necessary to have them to keep our independance. :)

    Tools and spares are the best way to travel to keep your self running. short trips i always have hand tools long trips or areas I know I won't get assistance the all the spares to avoid days of not running. Yes it causes weight in your rover but if it fits and you do not have a place to store is daily why bother with the hassle of loading and unloading and forgetting to put it back. You have a good selection of items to keep your self and other on the trail or route. Thank you once again for presenting you experiences and knowledge.

    Where do you put it all 🤣. I like having spares and tools, especially in remote areas of Southern Africa, no roads, no garages, sometimes no people!so working slowly towards your idea of independence is a safer choice.

    • @offtrackfamily

      Haha loads of space in that Defender ;) Of course, as you say: depending on where you are it's a necessity to have spares, tools, & skills to fix things.

    I too have a Defender (18 years old) and carry much the same as you, but I would include wire, wheel bearings, brake fluid (Got me out of trouble when my clutch master cylinder leaked, i was able to top it up to keep going even though it still leaked a bit.) EP90, ATF, 5W40 WD40, Grease, liquid gasket, track rod end and a few other things. Fortunately, I have a trailer, so carrying spares is not too much of a problem. My trailer has 240v so I have a grinder, which I have used more than once and I could weld off the batteries if i had to, but I do carry a rivet gun, a box of bolts, split pins, o rings, etc etc (I have had to use the grinder) and lent my rivet gun to a French couple for their 4x4 Patrol.
    Happy travelling.

      Hi Philip, thanks a lot for your message and sharing what you take with you while on the road. We do also have every type of fluids & oils in case we have to top up to keep it going until a repair, just as you say. You have a good list of spares & tools you take with you and I feel it's well thought with experience behind :)

    a small tip for you is to bring a 500ml hydraulic fluid bottle.Eventually the power steering pump will leak from the bottom where all the seals are.Adding a cup of hydraulic fluid in the power steering reservoir will swell up the seals and keep you going for a good while.What i have also noticed is that you don t seem to have spare wheel bearings and the appropriate large socket for the nut.(torque wrench setting @ 170 NM).So carry the correct torque wrench as well.From my experience here in Ireland ,the heavy off roading and long trips have made me think to carry a spare sett as well.

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  3 года назад

      Thanks for this tip! Yes we have 2 spare wheel bearings but unfortunately no large socket for this nut. I think it's 52mm right? For the torque wrench we have two:-D

    For my Unimog 404 full toolbox + air wrench gun for on the compressor and full tire kit to swap my huge unimog tires with handtools.

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  4 года назад

      Some say it adds too much weight but we think a full toolbox is never too much. Got us out of several small breakdowns, seems to be the same for you! :)

    • @victorbart
      @victorbart 4 года назад

      The maximum total weight of the unimog is 4.75T . So a toolbox and some parts is not an issue to bring. The camper box will be simple and light weight intrior. So if I have a bed fridge water system and a basic kitchen I will be fine. Just add my camera equipment laptop and fishing rod and im ready to go exploring. So enough capacity for tools. And I did total rebuild so I know exactly which tools I need and I touched every single bolt and part.

      Hi Alexandre, thanks for your message. Most tools & spares are stored inside of the Defender and the less heavy items go in our box on the roof rack.

  • @hartmannmark
    @hartmannmark 3 года назад +1

    My god, how much weight is all this? Don't you think that heavy load can not just help you in a break down but also cause it?

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  3 года назад +1

      As we are aware of all the weight added to our Defender and because of how we use it, we chose tougher parts when necessary. Not all breakdowns are due to heavy load :)

    • @philipneville4207
      @philipneville4207 3 года назад

      Hi Mark, having spent over 25 years in the British Army, I used to carry a lot more weight than this during the Cold War in Germany, as well as pulling a fully loaded trailer. Also, the up-armoured versions in the Middle East. These parts and spares will not cause a break down, but are a great collection if you do. I now have a 2007 2.2l Puma SWB County. Best vehicles in the world.😀. Great videos by the way.

    • @MrFrankieb1
      @MrFrankieb1 3 года назад

      For those comments about weight... You guys have a very good supply of tools and equipment. I had a canterlever toolbox awhile ago but because it was so heavy when full of tools I swapped it out for two tool bags, theres also a company call “Atlas 47” that do a great tool roll.
