Today we are going to Washington to visit Matt who built a very cute small scale aquaponics system. The system is composed of 3 parts:
A fish tank covered by a very aesthetic wooden frame. The fish tank volume seem limited to few dizaines of litres.
A swirl filter placed in height that will filter the water and allow to extract all heavy particles away from the system. If you want more information about the swirl filter see the video Here: and the free training to build your own system.
A Nutrient Film technique composed of PVC pipes in order to grow leafy plants on a limited surface. The NFT pipes are fixed on a wooden structure directly on top of the fish tank which allows to protect the fish tank from direct sunlight when the plants are grown.
Overall the setup is nice and ornamental. Matt applied smart aquaponics principles aligned with a very aesthetic touch. However the small scale NFT system will probably not be able to hold a significant quantity of bacteria living on the plants roots. This means that this type of systems are difficult to cycle and can’t hold a large fish biomass. I would recommend to add a flood and drain growbed to the system. It will allow a large quantity of bacteria to grow on the media surface and allow to transform the ammonia into nitrite and then in nitrate.
Congratulations Matt, you are on the good path to aquaponics success, few modifications will make your system efficient and productive 

Great Video! Sorry for butting in, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you ever tried - Patlarny Gardening Expert Principle (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a good exclusive product for learning how to expand your produce with the clever art of aquaponics without the normal expense. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my best friend Jordan at last got astronomical results with it.

I have built a similar system, using hole saw and a socket set with smooth sides, a heat gun can flare and make depressions for a good bond for the drop downs. They can stack/ lean and be separated when you use a pool noodle that fits the drop down tube, I used a heated bean tin to make the noodle match the grow tube diameter for a neat fit.

I cycle my tanks with algea out of my pond and goldfish from the pet store. Also adding a pleco for eating the algea near the top is great. I love your setup dude!!

isn't pvc pipe toxic for aquaponics? I'm doing some reserch to build a similar system, very nice job by the way! Im just thinking in using upvc gutter pipes( a square ish shape one wiht a half rounded on as a cover and to make the holes. I'm not 100% sure of the safty of upvc but looks much safer than common pvc. please what are your views about this? thank you very much

    Hi Jonathan,
I'm also Melbourne-based and my dad and I are interested in starting an Aquaponics system in our backyard. I wanted to know whether a Greenhouse would be ideal considering our crazy weather here. I can see you're doing well without it, so I wanted to know your opinion on it.
Love your content--super educational and informative!
    Cheers

Hello Kara, Yes a greenhouse will significantly improve the productivity of the aquaponics system if you can afford. however even a small scale NFT system as in this video will produce :)
My best advice would be to start small and go bigger once you build strong knowledge.
Have you got any experience with keeping fish?
      Thanks
      Jonathan

@@AquaponicsRevolution Yes! ☺ We have kept fish in the past but I've been studying up on Aquaponics these past few months too because I really want our family to transition into a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.
My dad has a friend that's done Aquaponics (IBC chop & flip style). Would you recommend this for beginners like us?
Just personally though as someone who wants an aesthetically pleasing backyard, I'm more interested in how you've built yours because it's gorgeous. Might be too ambitious for first-timers though haha.
      Thanks for the reply!

I saw a guy scuff up the pvc piping with coarse sand paper lenghtwise along the pipe to simulate wood grain, and then color it with wood stain. It wasn't perfect, but it looked pretty legit.

Hi Jonathan, I am building a small system for an RV application. I would like to develop it to the point of mass producing the systems in order to modify RV's to grow food for their residents. Of the millions of unused RV's, they could be modified to provide food and shelter for very low cost for so many homeless. Have you seen anything similar?

Hi Bryan, Aquaponics involve water and heavy loads. I haven't researched much on the RV topic but it's better to position the system on a strong ground. Can you tell us more about your project?
      Thanks

This sounds very interesting- such a small scale! Does it work? I am working with indoor/home aquaponics as well and I'd be super intrigued to see your setup!
