Aquaponics Simplified: A Guide to Integrating Fish and Plant Farming

  • A beginner's journey into small-scale aquaponics showcases the symbiotic relationship between fish and plants, emphasizing the system's ability to mimic natural ecosystems for year-round produce. The farmer shares insights on the technology, the learning curve with fish care, and the vision of reducing food miles through local, sustainable food production hubs.
    It's obvious Ann Forsthoefel of "Aqua Annie" is excited by aquaponics, the growing of plants fed by nutrients from fish, which in turn provide a source of food when they reach maturity. "There are so few inputs compared to growing crops in the soil," she said. With her gardens, she's constantly building up the soil that is depleted at the end of each growing season. The beauty of aquaponics, she said, is that there isn't that constant work because the fish are giving nutrients to the plants. Read the full post on Cooking Up a Story: cookingupastor...

    Thank you so much and yes the tank was overstocked. We had them in a much larger tank 2 times the size outside but when October came we realized that they would not survive the winter. So we had to move them into my basement into a smaller unit. Everything with aquaponics is a learning experience.

    I have been doing aquaponic now for over 10 years I just love everything about it and you grow your own veg's fruit and of course fish. To have fish that were 30 grams when bought and growing them out to be a kilo fish at harvest is so satisfying to me

    Thanks for your response, Annie. Depending on how warm your climate is, if a 'tank' is placed in to a hole dug out in the ground, the fish may be able to survive as the ground moderates the temperature. I read about someone in N. California doing this for a small bucket-type tank used to house excess aquatic plant trimmings. They put a few minnows in just to eat the bugs and the fish/tank life were able to survive cold winter weather (for that area, at least).

      do not like this unless a necessity to grow during the winter months, it defeats the purpose and benefits of farming or agriculture, unless u have a solar powered pump this is growing off electricity anf that means some where fossil fuel needs to be burned to produce electricity kinda backwards thinking if you ask me!!!! we are supposed to be going green not fuking black!!! the key to this is the water pump circulating the water, let the sun and soil do the work is less harmful to the planet!!!!! the be a power plant maby unseen but still needed to produce these ppls electricity for their pump , were the growers are will be green but some where else someone or environment suffers the pollution!! not sart and quite selfish at the same time, its like being vegan supposedly saving animals ,,,,,,, just imagine if every human becomes vegan, just to grow enough calories for 7 billion ppl we would need to anaialate every natural habitate to grow thus wiping out all the animals!!!! what first appears a good idea might not be!!!! when are we going to actually learn from mother nature!!!

      thats why folks use them because they can tolerate high density population as long as the water is cycled/aired. if its bad for a fish they will die, its not like a quality of life thing for mammals or reptiles. look up snakehead/mud catfish from asia; they use them in essentially mud fields to help fertilize their plots and as a food source.

    Very cool concept. Not sure if those are tilapia or not, but when you're talking about tilapia, that 'tank' seems over stocked, even with the plants filtering the water heavily. I know you acknowledged you're still learning the fish aspect. The goldfish/red minnow tank at the end could be easily increased two-fold in terms of what you've got swimming, though, so I doubt you're shoving stuff in there with a disregard for the fish. Just a thought to consider.

    I think it depends on how much she is feeding them. Fish can survive on very little food if their water is slightly below their preference, I'm sure you know this. I have some experiences with over stocked tanks and I can attest that if you reduce their food they drastically output much less ammonia. In between plant changes I would have to basically feed only once every few days until the plant base was built up again. The fish drastically slow down in growth but that's nature for ya.

    Any plant will grow with any light that is strong enough to trigger a "photo period" (a noticeable difference between day and night that the plant can notice). However in most cases, the more light you have the better the plant will produce both in yield and nutrition. So either you will need to source local veggies that can grow with your limited amount of light or introduce supplemental artificial light, such as fluorescent tubes (like in the video) and many other sources of light. Cheers

    There's video (named Kev & Erve's Castle) on my channel & the pond is in the few minutes of the video. It runs back under the structure (Nipa Hut) because if you have to much daylight on ponds can cause algae to take over. Some of these Tilapia are a bit over a couple of pounds & good eating. We lined the pond with limestone to seal it better and so they wouldn't taste like mud. The locals are always trying to buy them, but we just give a few away now and then for the most part and eat the rest.

    Out of curiosity, what's the advantage of feeding fish to provide the nutrients for the system versus throwing nutrients into a hydroponics system? I can't imagine that the chemicals excreted by the fish for the plants can't be made commercially with more efficiency

    • @foodfarmerearth
      @foodfarmerearth  7 лет назад +1

      The benefit if done right is in the form of better cost efficiencies. Those inputs that you mention can certainly be bought but then you are incurring an extra expense. An analogy: think of thermal windows holding inside temperatures more even. Sure, with drafty windows you can always use more inside heat or air conditioning to stay comfortable but it will cost you more money over the long haul. Same idea with trying to maintain a closed loop system in aquaponics.

    She uses a airblock for the fish... how nice! apart from the air block does not oxygenate water, only the bubbles as they disturb the water surface which is fairly minimal. Save the electric and use the water in-take to cause disruption on the surface of the water, not only will you save money but you will get better quality water.

      Appreciate video content! Sorry for chiming in, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Patlarny Gardening Expert Principle (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is a smashing exclusive guide for learning how to expand your produce with the clever art of aquaponics without the normal expense. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my cooworker after a lifetime of fighting got cool success with it.
