LAND is OPPORTUNITY : Sustainable Harvesters
Meet Matthew Braud, Co-founder of Sustainable Harvesters which was formed out of the necessity for fresh and local produce in the Houston, Texas market.
Their mission, passion and commitment is to grow the freshest produce using the most efficient, sustainable, and safest technology available.
Sustainable Harvesters has over 12,000 square feet of environmentally controlled greenhouse that has the capacity to grow over 7,000 heads of lettuce every week utilizing growing techniques called Aquaponics.
Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (the soil-less growing of plants) that grows fish and plants together in one integrated system.
Coming this Summer - expansion of another 8,000 square feet!

The initial investment into this system is fairly large...albeit still less than traditional farming I’d imagine. I’m curious on your ROI and this being truly sustainable commercially. Which leads to my second thought of sticking with Hydroponics over Aquaponics. What financially advantages do you feel you’ve obtain though adding the protein? Is it less expensive overall than adding nutrients as is done in Hydroponics?

Compost gets to very high temps even in the winter. You mentioned you have a large amount of composting material. During cold months could you run your return line like a car’s radiator through or just below the compost bin to collect heat for your fish. Having the fish and the compost high and the return line lower and a smaller diameter it should circulate on its own. Just an idea. Great video.

I have been using rock wool as a substrate in my home system, but see the peat moss/1% elastic polymer as a huge enhancement. Since watching your video, I have not been able to access a source for the material. Is this proprietary? If not, would you be able to share information on the material used? Really appreciate your time in responding. Cheers, John.

Just looking at this myself, a quick search comes up with "Q-Plugs" as a term for the coconut seed growing media. Maybe you'll have better luck looking for that. I went back through the video at all the parts where we see the trays, I can see the beginning of a website (www.), but it looks like they were careful to not disclose the name of the company they source from.
EDIT: A little more digging around and it appears that "the AquaPonics Source" website has nearly identical materials as what Sustainable Harvesters are using.

The peat moss/polymer seeding "cube", has it been shown to not "leak" any contaminants into the water or the plant itself? "Polymer " just screams "plastic" to me anf hopefully im wrong and worried for nought..

    Solids filtration isnt a biofilter.
Treating media beds as a solids filter is silly. Wigglers have to poop too and they'll create anaerobic zones in the media within a few weeks.
Stinky and bad for nitrification. Cleaning it is very labor intensive and can be prevented with a settler filter after your fish tanks.
