I use plastic poster board - about $2 for a 22" x 28" sheet at Michaels. I cut it down into 12" widths and then cut it on "Stencil Film - 0.4 mm" (pressure 341). It's nice and sturdy. I don't use spray adhesive: either I hold the stencil down by hand or I use a low-tack tape like painter's tape. For a stencil you'll want to tile (say you're looking to create an overall effect on a wall), remember to add a couple of tiny circles in the corners to use as registration marks so everything lines up correctly.
I read somewhere that I could use my laminator to make craft plastic! Just tried it and it worked PERFECT and didn’t need to do more than one pass with my normal blade! I just passed a clear laminate sheet through the laminator to seal it and cut it as normal on the card stock setting. Such a great trick!!!!!

Great Tutorial... I used the same plastic stencil sheets (0.007) and used the same settings. however it did not cut all the way through for me. I had to force my Maker to cut twice. I initially just edited the 'transparency' material and later I ended up creating my custom material which I named Stencil 0.007 and used the same pressure as the Transparency but activated the multiple cuts option. I tried 4 times first (overkill) then down to 3 and 2 was good. Just throwing this out there in case anyone has the same issue as I did.

Thank you SO MUCH for this video! I loved watching it, you keep it light fun and SIMPLE. I made a couple of stencils today and they came out great. THANKS!
GREAT tutorial! Just a couple of questions. Can you confirm that the reposition spray needs to be added to the stencil with each application? If not, and remains sticky after one use, what do you suggest using to cover the back -- acetate sheets? Lastly, any recommended distance for spraying the reposition adhesive?
Hello!! Only add more spray if it seems like it's not as sticky. Also, laying a piece of clear wrap/cling film is a good way. 8" away is preferred! Thank you for your great questions!
Rachel.. you’re so easy to follow.. thank you. Does the Cricut Maker automatically know the deep cut blade is in there? Next to the Transparency material, it has fine point blade listed. . I doesn’t give option to change it.
Since the black housing for the deep cut is the same as the fine point you don't need to worry about it. Cricut assumes it's the fine point even though it's the deep cut.
@@MakersGonnaLearn but can you cut a stencil out on a sheet and then go back and cut another stencil out on the same sheet another time to make it more cost effective?
Hi, great video.. is there a way to where we don't have to make the square around the stencil so that I can binder organize them using the binder holes.? Hopefully i make sense .. thanks!
Love your tutorial, Rachel. Life saver. My only problem is my Cricut Maker (just got it a year ago) doesn't let me use the deep cut blade (only lets me use the fine point once I select the transparency material). Any idea on how I can override it? Soooo hope you have an answer. Thanks again for the great video!!
Thank you, you're so sweet!! Just put the blade in, Cricut cannot sense the difference between the Fine Point, Deep Cut, or Fabric Bonded blades, so just place it in the clamp :)
@@MakersGonnaLearn it won't let me cut it without replacing the deep cut blade. It does sense that the fine point isnt there. Ive tried multiply times.
@annetteanderson3375 try setting up a custom setting that will use the deep cut blade. However just wondering if you may have the knife blade confused with the deep cut blade? Deep cut has a black housing but is the same shape, with no gear at the top, as the fine blade housing.
HELP!This tutorial was amazing! I am using the Cricut Joy and I don't want it to cut out the square around the stencil. The mat for the joy is exactly the width I need for my cookie stencils. If I make the square the same size of the mat at 4.5 inches, it automatically says I am not useing a mat and won't let me change it. I don't want it to cut the square, only the image. Any suggestions?
Hey there! I'm trying to make a stencil. I'd like to see how the C & r turned out once you painted it. When you put the line on each, will the C & r be whole? I'm doing BAKERY OVEN. The lines in the B, A, R stay on the mat. I tried using the line. I've had such a mess with this. I've nice lady told me to 'bridge' these letters. Also, I need to look for the stencil font. Had it once. Can't find it. So, do I bridge or find the stencil font? Thank you bunches!!🎉
Thank you so for getting me through making a stencil. It makes big projects easier. I have one question though. When there letters with a centerpiece, i.e., O D A, how do you keep the inside within the stencil. I'm holding down the center of O, making a mess. The middle of the A is so small and the D is almost as difficult. Really appreciate your help. Genevieve
Hello! So, this can be a tricky process! The best thing to do in our opinion is just to hold it down with the back of a paintbrush or something while you're stenciling.
Stencil fonts usually have breaks in the cross bar of the A, or part of the O, D, P, R, Q, B to prevent "the inside" from slipping or falling out. There are two ways to fill in these breaks: one, to manually add them in once you've lifted the stenci; two, to make two almost-identical stencils with letter the breaks in different places. Use the first stencil to paint, marker, color, etc. your substrate. Lift the stencil and let everything dry. Then place the second stencil over the now-dry project, exposing the breaks in those letters, and color everything in (essentially, adding a second coat to most of the letters).
I use plastic poster board - about $2 for a 22" x 28" sheet at Michaels. I cut it down into 12" widths and then cut it on "Stencil Film - 0.4 mm" (pressure 341). It's nice and sturdy. I used report covers and it cut beautifully with 1 pass. Beginners luck!
Wow! Good for you! So glad it worked out :)
I was wondering if those would work
Wonderful video. I have a thicker plastic 7ml. What setting should I use? Tia
You cannot cut anything thicker very well. .007 mm is definitely what you need
Great video! Thank you!
You are welcome!
Thank you for a great video. Can the crafting plastic be used again once you have already cut out a stencil on it?
you can use the stencil multiple times :)
@@MakersGonnaLearn but can you cut a stencil out on a sheet and then go back and cut another stencil out on the same sheet another time to make it more cost effective?
@annawatson758 Yes, you can. Just make sure you put it on the right spot on your mat too.
Good video. I’m a newbie to Cricut. Tfs. 👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you for sharing! How do you store the stencil since the backside is tacky?
best way is to lay it on plastic wrap :)
Very informative video. I purchased the supplies using your links. Thank you.
There was no listing for the acetate you used. Great tutorial!
Thank you for watching! 😊
Hi, great video.. is there a way to where we don't have to make the square around the stencil so that I can binder organize them using the binder holes.? Hopefully i make sense .. thanks!
You might want to use a different less thick material if that's what you want to do with it.
Great Video!!!!!!!!
Thanks!! We're so glad you enjoyed it!
Sooo helpful!!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching and commenting!
Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching! :D
Thank u! That was a great lesson and to the point! Luv it
You are so welcome!
